North meets South....and survives to tell about it!!

As a Yankee who married a southern boy and spent a good deal of time in the South, this story resonated with me. Ms. Johnson is laugh-out-loud funny as she documents the plight of Priscilla from New Jersey, married to Bob and transplanted to Florida.

Priscilla is Italian who does a grand job of cooking sauce and other Italian delights. Unfortunately, Bob's digestion can't tolerate Italian spices. He's accustomed to grease and plenty of it -- fried meat, fried okra, and his beloved grits eaten with gravy. The hapless Italian from New Jersey learns to cook the southern delicacies her husband loves despite many culinary misadventures.

Cooking southern food is not the only adjustment Priscilla has to make. Her thick Yankee blood boils in the new, steamy environment. Instead of chilly nor'easters, she faces tornadoes and hurricanes. The moss draped graciously from trees in grand southern gothic style houses biting red bugs too small for the eye to see. And then there's the wild boar meat, the bear meat.

But I like Grits is quintessential Shirley Johnson. If you like humor, irony, and a darn good belly laugh, this is a short you have to read.

This author is so funny!!!! I look for her books/shorts or whatever she writes, because she takes everyday life experiences and turns them into things we can laugh about. How true this story is - how many embarrassing things have happened in our lives? I can't get over how very down to earth she is, being a Pastor and not being stern or stuffing in her writing. She relates God and life experiences in a manner I've never read before. How refreshing she is!!! I really loved this, so keep them coming!

A GREAT SHORT STORY OF GRIT & GRITS !

Why do people assume that everybody should know all the abbreviations in the world ? It took me longer searching for the meaning of "Military MOS" than reading Shirley's touching bio but, from MOS to moss this was a most pleasant reading. And I am a mossback kind of a guy !
Are you really from New Jersey Shirley ? I hope you drive with your seat belts on and....DON'T LET THE RED BUGS BITE!

This one had me laughing out loud

Being from the South and also a connoisseur of grits, I couldn't resist reading Shirley Priscilla Johnson's "But I like Grits."

In this Amazon Short the author shows herself to be a great storyteller. She drew me into her world and I found myself enjoying each page more than the one before. In the beginning, Priscilla tells of making adjustments by moving from New Jersey to Florida - interesting stuff to which anyone can relate if they have ever moved from one section of the country to another.

Things got funnier and I was smiling when Priscilla learned to cook and eat grits. When she shared her first experience of eating okra, my smile turned to a chuckle. It got even better when she tried cooking bacon from a wild pig - by which time I was laughing out loud. And the climax was absolutely hilarious. Priscilla's story about the bear had me holding my sides and almost rolling in the floor. You've got to read it for yourself!

This is a delightful tale, well told, that anyone should enjoy.

Unless one has tons of experience in photography, this book is a MUST HAVE. We converted from a point-and-shoot to the Rebel XTi just over 4 months ago and have been crippled by not having a source of reference. In my opinion, Canon should consider having this book as their user manual instead of the pocket-sized next to nothing that comes with the camera upon purchase.

I am enjoying this book and glad I purchased it. One it's much easier on the old tired eyes to read than the small little thing that came with the camera, and colored pictures and all. Glad I made the purchase and this one seems to be the best one for the money from my checking out the others.

This book by BUSCH is better than the one by LOWRIE because it contains pictures of the actual camera and controls, which serve to make it easier to use. It is logical and almost step by step in it's instruction. It covers much of what the camera can do, even the custom functions in detail.

It is very straightforward and extremely helpful for anyone who has this complex camera, which can do a lot.

I recommend it to the novice or amateur photographer.

Busch's Guide vs. Lowrie's guide for the XTi/400D

I purchased both Busch's guide and Lowrie's guide to acquaint myself with the XTi.

I appreciated Lowrie's thorough explanations of the "bare facts" presented in the XTi's users manual. Unfortunately, I found Lowrie's guide to have a few errors (e.g.; the diagram of the "9-point AF" actually showed only 7-points). Obviously this was missed when Lowe's material was updated for the XTi.

Busch's information I found to be very accurate. Moreover, Busch goes into a fair amount of photography theory and shows how the XTi can be used to address some of the basic issues of technique. Describing the XTi's use in this context I found to be very engaging and informative.

If you want very good explanations of all the information in Canon's XTi user manual, the Lowrie book may be for you. But if you want to know all the Lowrie information AND and how it relates to the greater context of photographic theory, go for Busch's book.

Truly Comprehensive. I have been working with Data Center related designs for more than six years and have never seen Content Switching covered as good as it is covered in this book. This book is for all expertise levels. I particularly like the Case Studies existent in almost every chapter. I highly recommend that you give this book a read before you tackle you next Integrated Service DC design or configuration.

Server Load Balancing a la Cisco
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-30
Content Switching is the placing of a smart switch between the communications channel and the processing systems. The biggest application is Server Load Balancing. This is used when the activity on a web site becomes more than one server can handle.

The idea is that you put in the switch where the high speed line comes in. Then you plug in multiple servers on the other side. The switch looks at the content of the incomming messages and sends the consecutive http requests to different servers. There are, of course, other types of content that needs switching, but web load balancing is the big application.

The current Cisco switches are quite complex systems that monitor what each server is doing (i.e. response time) and then sends the http request to the fastest responding server which is usually the server with the lowest load. They can also monitor when a server goes down and stop sending requests to that server.

This book is published by Cisco Press, as you might guess, it is heavily oriented to Cisco equipment. This is not a serious problem as Cisco is probably the biggest supplier, and the philosophy described in the book is fairly common over the other brands of equipment.

The book is clearly written and at the right level for a person suddenly faced with a workload problem on a web server.

This writer used to wonder where some of the best album art she's ever seen came from.

And then she clicked on a link on the official Colide page to Chad's page, and she found out.

The whole them of the artwork of Black Rust is of a world where nothing, and this writer means nothing, is impossible: cybernetic arms, out-there piercings, tattoos, and so on. In fact, according to the artist in the forward, the title of the book comes from a Japanese word reffering to the future.

One warning: this is not for those who are embarassed by the sight of bare breasts, for many of the female models are nude or half-nude

This book is totally awesome. Don't judge this one by the work on the cover. Inside it's much darker, more violent, and erotic. Many artists share a similar vision but few can back it with the techniqe and skill of Chad Michael Ward. This book is definitly the best of it's kind.

Great Dusty Richards character, Hamp Burns, a young Texas Ranger forced to take command of a group of Rangers in Comanche territory. Hamp vows to help a young girl--orphaned when marauding Comanches kill her parents--find her baby sister who goes missing in the raid.

Hamp reminds me of a young Captain Woodrow Call and his face-down with a sleazy buffalo hunter is a great scene.

Dusty's dialogue is second-to-none and his characters memorable.

Every good idea in a book deserves a wipe of a highlighter pen. My copy of this book ended up with over half of the page real estate in fluorescent yellow.

Why? It's full of excellent tips, encouragement and dry humour for anyone who communicates in print - and that's most of us. And for once, the testimonials are accurate; his ex-employer, David Ogilvy (of Ogilvy & Mather fame) says "Drayton Bird knows more about direct marketing than anyone else in the world. His book about it is pure gold".

His only deviates from his own advice once - there is no address to reply to him. Apart from that, I recommend this to all my friends - and hide it from my enemies!

Possibly a great book for those that know something alreadytoo, just look at the endorsements. Not a step by step book - no hardand fast rules to DM - goes to the principals derives guidelines and provides examples. A good approach that suited me - I always want to know why something should be done a certain way not just follow a prescription.

This book contains all of the information you need to know about direct marketing. It puts aside the myth regarding the 1-2% return on mailings. I had no idea that a 50% return was possible! The book is full of proven advice and tips; planning, list selection, the offer, pricing...it goes on and on. Reading it from cover to cover gave me the information necessary to execute my own mailing which cost me less than $200 but reaped close to $100,000. Read it!

Like most dummy books, this one takes you through the very very basic terminology and moves forward from there. I found it useful in introducing one concept at a time. The author makes clear that this is not a book for people who are aiming to open their own studio but rather for musicians who want to record themselves and maybe their bands. I have Cubase LE (the most basic version) which is packaged with the interface hardware I bought. Does the job OK.

This is a very good guide to getting started with Cubase. I bought an Alesis USB 8 came with a copy of Cubase LE but no hard copy manual, just a 587 page PDF document. The PDF manual is good for looking up specifics but not well suited to getttng a quick overview.

The Idiot's Guide is based on the full blown versions of Cubase so a few things are different in LE but it gives me a good idea on where to look in the PDF manual.

This isn't for the 'power user' but covers most everything needed for basic home recording.

excellent book for hobbyists.

I've recorded on 4 track cassette to hard disc recorders and was intimidated to jump into PC recording. This book is excellent. Cubase (even LE like I own) is so feature rich that one could spend a day just scrolling through the in program user manual (576 pages). This book cuts to the chase telling you about mic and room selection all the way to a final mastered project. If you are new to Cubase, do not hesitate to buy this book.

I've begun to notice how frequently the phrase "winning hearts and minds" appears in the business literature but how infrequently business executives know anything of a practical nature as to how to do either. This beautifully written and mercifully short piece spells out the vast differences between the two and tells executives how to do both. I've worked extensively with top executives for 30 years and have been looking for this article the whole time. Thanks, Dick, for writing it!

If you fancy yourself a leader, you'd better read this article. Let's be honest: most of us in positions of leadership fail to fully deliver, and we fail because we put too much faith in knowledge, intellect, and logic. Dick Richards sets us straight: if we leaders expect commitment, then winning peoples' minds is not enough; we must win their hearts as well. That takes a different, additional set of skills. Dick's article packs dynamite in a few pages!

It's especially important for those in the organizational world, who traditionally use just the "left brain", to think about the other side, the heart. The essay is an excellent and provocative argument for combining the mind and the heart.
