Great Story Telling and Attention to Details Make This an Enjoyable Read

"Guilty of Dust and Sin" is an easy read with a style somewhat like Chandler or Hammett. It's set in New Orleans just after WW II. The story starts out when two boys come running into Detective Lucien Caye's office. Apparently, a dead body was discovered nearby when their errant football went over a fence. From there, Lucien follows the clues, as a good detective should do. He starts out by wondering why a woman would be wearing a flashy red and yellow dress, as if she was going out on the town, while doing gardening. The local police are a little clueless at times, but Lucien is there to help. The plot unfolds in a straightforward fashion, albeit a bit plain, I'd give that part 3 1/2 stars. However, the story telling itself and the attention to detail is excellent, I'd give that part 4 1/2 stars. On the whole, a really nice piece. Overall rating -- 4 stars.

De Noux hit the ball out of the park with this one. The characters are quickly brought to life with rich descriptions and attention to detail creating a moving visual image of tension, agony and a touch of humor. If you love mysteries, you'll love this story.

I loved this story. "Guilty of Dust and Sin" reminds me of some of the best of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain. It's a tale of a world-weary PI with a sharp mind and a strict sense of justice, one who does things his own way. O'Neil De Noux's characters are marvelous and his dialogue is snappy and real, but I think the strongest element of this story--the one I'll remember the most--is the setting. His detailed description lets readers see and feel the New Orleans of the late 40's. It makes me look forward to more of Detective Lucien Caye's adventures. An excellent, beautifully written story throughout!

This story is a beautifully written paean to a city (New Orleans) and a time (just after WWII) in which the boundaries between right and wrong were more sharply drawn and the consequences to someone who crossed them more immediate. Guilty of Dust and Sin, by one of Louisiana's best authors, is a story to be savored.

It will always be on my desk and is my reference source. Brilliantly written by one of the, if not the most, knowledgeable experts in this area. A must for everyone in our industry. The Two Volume Graduate Course "We don't even want to imagine how many reviews, rewrites, update cycles were required for this project. For a time we thought the DTP industry would settle down and become almost static and routine. But the jump start of the Web, interactive multimedia and video have again driven people back to the books. We're not certain exactly how it was accomplished, but Professor Michael Kleper has very effectively squeezed a four-year degree course into two volumes.

The Handbook of Digital Publishing is much more than a coffee table book. The two volumes will quickly become dog-eared as professionals continue to refer to them to enhance and expand their capabilities and expertise. Thank goodness there is a companion Web site to accompany The Handbook. The author's biggest challenge is that The Handbook wasn't just a research/writing job...it has now become a career.

The books are heavy to say the least...fortunately there is a lot of substance, so it lightens the load...

His insights into an industry he has watched from the beginning should be useful for everybody in this business, and his two hefty tomes are certainly the most complete collection ever compiled on the subject.

Highly recommended.

Professor Michael Kleper's two volume The Handbook of Digital Publishing is an outstanding source on the foundations of the digital age of publishing. For those of us involved in some part of Graphic Arts/Publishing/Communications, and today that is just about anyone with access to a computer, digital technology has made accessible much of what was art and technique. Congratulations to Professor Kleper who has contributed a timely, thorough, and readable work. This is not just a collection of terminology and technology but a much needed companion to understand the digital publishing "tsunami" which has exploded as fast as the computer technology which underpins it. Happily, Professor Kleper has a lot of energy for he has opened the door to volumes three and more for those technologies still being created .....

This short story was a real find for me. It introduced me to a writer I had not encountered before and into a genre with which I'm not well acquainted. Was it any wonder then that I found this story opening like a many petaled flower which color grew progressively darker even as it acquired a sort of jeweled brilliance.

I read Borderline, one of Eugen Bacon's books, and was not especially drawn to it; too many characters and the start was difficult to get into. Although I ended up enjoying the novel and the writer's unique style, I was not sure what to expect of The Hybrid. Reading it, I could not help but feel that Eugen Bacon's writing has greatly evolved to a whole new level to compete shoulder to shoulder with notable writers. The opening line is sharp and precise: "It started with a name." I couldn't read the story slowly enough for I wanted to absorb every little detail.

The Hybrid is told in the eyes of Vida, a human. Through him, the character of Myra, a hybrid of astonishing ability, is perfectly defined. Love or hate Myra - something you will feel. This is the work of a confident writer you would enjoy to read. If you have never tried Eugen Bacon's writing, I would recommend to start with this one.

I'll admit that when I saw that Ms Bacon had posted a review on one of my Redneck Riviera stories my curiosity was set into full motion. I am in awe of many of the authors in the Amazon Shorts program, and with the credentials Ms Bacon brings to the site, I wondered what could entice her to read a story that I had written. But read it she did, and I am deeply flattered with the review she posted of it. I then went in search of her Amazon stories, and to my delight found The Hybrid. I was intrigued by the title, and after downloading and reading the story, I remain intrigued by not only the story, but the vast promise that it carries. I find the idea of a hybrid human fascinating to say the least, and as I cut my teeth on such authors as Phillip Jose Farmer, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, I have a deep love of good writing and strong, slightly irregular characters. These two elements are exactly what Ms Bacon brings us in The Hybrid. Great writing and what could turn out to be some of the most exciting characters that have come along in a great while. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and plan to read the second in the series tomorrow. If I am as impressed when I finish it as I am right now, I can't see anyway for Ms Bacon to not make this a complete book, and perhaps a great series of books. I do not know Ms Bacon personally, but I can foresee a future when every science fiction fan will know her. It seems inevitable.

I was impressed by how well Amazon Shorts have presented this story. The whole layout and font is attractive to the eye. There is also very good characterisation and a storyline with a hook. A novel could easily evolve from the hybrid series. Bacon's writing has a fine finish here and I felt as if the story was a promise. This will not be my last sample of Eugen Bacon.

I enjoyed this book. It reads easily and quickly and many of the photos are stunning. It introduces and de-mystifies some of the more difficult PhotoShop functions but was not detailed enough for me in some examples, to use these functions without further instruction. I found it inspiring enough to order a more in-depth book with precise step-by-step instructions, Rob Shepperd's Outdoor Photographer Landscape and Nature Photography with Photoshop CS2, to teach myself some of the techniques in-depth. Recommended for anyone wanting an overview of CS2's possibilities and an opening to begin exploring it.

Before I give you my review of Rick Sammon's new book, Idea To Image in Photoshop CS2, let me tell you a bit about me. I am an enthusiastic advanced amateur photographer--with roughly 40 years of experience that includes published magazine and Associated Press photos and numerous awards. I gave up my wet darkroom a few years ago for digital photography, image editing in Photoshop and ink jet printing. But, enough about me; let's get on to the important stuff and why you're reading this review: my thoughts on Idea To Image in Photoshop C2. So, what kind of book is this, and who is it for?

What Kind of Book is This?
Strictly speaking, this is not a how-to-do-it book. Yes, it has many examples of how Rick created his photos and associated effects. And, looking in the Table of Contents, you'll find a goodly list of projects that offer numerous techniques, such as, A Note Paper Effect, A Quick Pencil Sketch and Speed-Aging A Photograph. But the crux of the book is an attempt (mostly successful) to teach the reader how to take a concept for a photograph and, through a combination of careful planning, good photographic techniques and post shoot Photoshop image enhancements, create professional-level images.
There are three sections to the book: Chapter 1 on how to get ideas for innovative images; Chapters 2 through 4 about actual shooting and enhancement techniques, and Chapter 5 on how Rick (and you) can envision and carry through projects, as the title of the book says, from idea to image.

Who is Idea To Image in Photoshop C2 for?
This book is definitely not for absolute beginners in either photography or Photoshop. Rick assumes some basic knowledge in both areas. And, since this is a project-oriented book, he assumes the reader wants to learn, not only how, but also why, Rick recommends each technique. Rick also goes to great lengths to explain where each concept he describes fits into the scheme of the creation of the final image.

Conclusion
The obvious question now is, will this book at least return your investment? If you're looking to up your photography/Photoshop skills beyond the basics, to what Rick refers to as photographic artistry, the answer is yes. Rick's premise is that any photographer only gets out of a photographic project what he or she puts into it, and besides reasonable skill and imagination, that also means sufficient time. If you're willing to put in that time, this book will prove an excellent guide.

More Why to than How to

Idea to Image in Photoshop CS2 - Rick Sammon's Guide to Enhancing Your Digital Photos is a different sort of Photoshop book. Most Photoshop books focus on showing you what can be done to enhance your image. Idea to Image approaches from a different perspective. Rick Sammon encourages you as the reader to focus on your final vision prior to capturing the image. Throughout the chapters he sprinkles in an assortment of suggestions and examples designed to aid with composition, and timing. Learning when to take the picture, and encouraging you to experiment and think beyond a single shot.

The book is 202 pages long, and very reader friendly. In reviewing other Photoshop books I often conclude that you can jump in anywhere that interests you and start playing. With Idea to Image I think it best to start at the beginning and read it in order at least through the first two chapters. There is a lot of good advice in the opening pages and to skip past it would be a mistake.
Once you get into the book, like most Photoshop books, the lessons are brief and well encapsulated allowing you to quickly access what you need to know to try a new technique. The book encourages you to explore and experiment, always-good advice in my mind. I always encourage my friends to push beyond the obvious application of a technique and think of unique ways to apply a new style.

Idea to Image is a great book if you are in need of a little creative boost. While some of the subject matter would be beneficial to beginner photographers, there are surely better places for a novice to look for help. The more I know about Photoshop the more I realize how much more there is to learn. Idea to Image is a great reminder to focus on the final image, not just the viewfinder, and it is a welcome shot in the arm when your creativity is waning.

To me a review is most meaningful when you know a little something about the person writing the review. I have been an avid amateur photographer since the late 1970's and have been selling my work since 2004. Photography isn't my day job, but it does provide a welcome supplement. I have been shooting with a Canon Professional Digital SLR since 2003 and perform the vast majority of my post processing work in Photoshop. I began with Photoshop 7 and currently work with CS2. I am a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and make extensive use of the abundant educational materials available on the member website. I have read well over two-dozen Photoshop training guides with one overriding goal in mind; producing the best images possible.

I've always loved Yaoi. Every chance I get, I browse any book store to find a new title or continue an old one. So naturally, when I saw this one, I jumped to it and started to read. The cover art is truly beautiful in itself, and the art inside was amazing and flowed rather well. The plot itself is a bit fast paced and I'm sure a few yaoi first-timers may be flipping back a few pages and skimming over once or twice, and the schizophrenic Riya can be a bit confusing to determine once you realize his major problem, but the drama, intensity, and character connections will indeed keep you hooked. I couldn't believe I had finished, but when I did, I immediately said, "I must buy volume 2!!!" An overall wonderful story (though hard to pronounce title), I give this book a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars! Recommended strongly for fanatics.

Also and ofcourse if you are not into guys falling in love with guys than you will probably not enjoy this. I personally don't care who falls for who as long as the characters are emotionally engrossing and the story is able to hold my attention, this will. Volume II only gets better! It's so sexy, musically, erotically and subtly.

Great book on electronics of digital still cameras
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-07
This book focuses on image acquisition and signal processing in digital still cameras (DSC's). From the perspective of the flow of image information, a DSC consists of imaging optics, an image sensor, and a signal processing block that receives a signal from the image sensor and generates digital data that is eventually compressed andstored on a memory device in the DSC.

Chapters one and two are at a rather high level and introductory. However, in chapter 3 the book gets much more specific. Chapter 3 discusses the functions and performance parameters common to CCD and CMOS image sensors. Chapter 4 describes in detail the CCD image sensors widely used in imaging applications. The chapter ranges from a discussion of basic CCD operating principles to descriptions of CCDimage sensors specifically designed for DSC applications. Chapter 5 discusses CMOS image sensor technology. Chapter 6, the final chapter focusing on sensors, describes methods for evaluating image sensor performances relative to DSC requirements.

Chapter 7 shifts gears and begins the discussing of image processing algorithms. The discussion begins with color theory and its application to DSCs. Chapter 8 presents the algorithms utilized by DSC's in both hardware and software. Basic image processing and camera control algorithms are shown along with some image processing examples. Chapter 9 discusses the performance parameters for DSCs and digital video cameras followed by descriptions of the architectures of signal processing engines. Examples of the analog front-end and the digital back-end designs are introduced. Chapter 10 shows how each component previously described affects image quality. The final chapter discusses future DSC image sensors and explores a new paradigm for image sensors.

The reader should have an electrical engineering background since there are quite a few circuit diagrams shown involving transistors, and it is hard to follow the discussion if you are not already aware of their theory of operation. It is a very good book for its target audience, but students with pure computer science backgrounds who are coming to this looking for just the mathematics or algorithms of image processing may found themselves lost in the discussions involving pn junctions, which are numerous.

I have reviewed quite a few books on cameras and image sensors. Being in the business, I have quite a large library of books related to this field. However, Nakamura nailed it all with this book. A very well written - almost in layman's terms - that addresses all the technical components that make up a camera. If you are looking to understand the principles of a digital camera, this book is for you.

I give 10 stars to this book...Good luck and hope to see more like this.

Note: I hope to see the optics chapter be re-written and posted with corrections on the Web. I believe this should be done soon and mentioned in amazon.com. Thank you.

This is an excellent book. It covers a wide range of topics in a very detailed manner, suitable for university level students and professionals.

So far I have found only one error in the book. There is something terribly wrong in paragraph 2.2.2, page 32. It is stated that "Depth of the field - ... - is proportional to the square of the focal length of the imaging optics." In fact, the depth of field is inversely proportional to the focal length. Then Eq. 2.11 on page 33 is described once as giving a hyperfocal distance (above the equation) and below the equation is described as giving the depth of the field. I think this part seems to be missing some lines.

Overall, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something at a technically advanced level.

In the Dark is a awesome short story that from the very first line had me. Normally I don't like short stories, but this one is a winner.

You put your baby down for a nap, check the monitor and proceed to the kitchen. You hear a phone ringing and can't believe someone's line is crossing with your monitor.

You listen not sure who it is or what is going on. There happens to be a lot of details that remind you of your husband. All along you think you have the perfect marriage. Do you or don't you, you ask yourself the whole time.

Will the sun continue to shine on your marriage or did it set?

This is certainly worth $0.49, and since you can't buy it anywhere else (to my knowledge), you should just go for it. It is a different style from his mystery books, but it is very funny. I do think some of the other reviewers are overestimating its honesty and underestimating its comedy. This itself is a testament to the excellent dry humor.

I just fell in love with Amazon shorts after reading A Man and His Luggage. It is a narration of how a little obsession can transoform ones life, creep into it and rule one. Here is something you want to read and reread for the humor and the wisdom. I am hooked.

Life Staged by Honey-Colored Leather

The pull was quick, into this story of the barren financial beginnings of a current superstar in the world of mystery novels. Empathy was easily engendered in the opening paragraph:

>> ...One morning there appeared in the New York Times a full-page ad for the now-departed Abercrombie & Fitch, introducing its acquisition of a line of Italian luggage called "Whip di Roma." On my lunch hour I wandered across Madison Avenue and was boggled to find a sea of gorgeous honey-colored leather stretching over half a floor, incorporating everything from a shaving kit to a steamer trunk. Alas, I was unable to afford even the shaving kit. I slunk, humbled by my penury, back to... <<

As Woods linked time flashes, tracking the "Whip" line going dry, he simultaneously linked me into this tangy tale of growing "obsession." Obsession? I see this leathery love affair as a fluky gift from the "Universe." Why condemn it into the spiritless realm of psychological stigmata?

"The next years were spent in luggage wilderness. I never passed a leather shop without entering and casting a quick eye over the stock, hoping to find that somebody else had taken on the Whip line."

Avoid boredom through a hobby which provides something you're sparked to do, even in far away lands? Is not dat guut?

"For the next sixteen years I traveled widely and my cases were welcomed everywhere. Bellmen, stroking the leather, would cry, Beeootiful loggage! (this is an average of the various accents)."

Lines like that littered this journalistic excursion with sensual syntax.

"After a sleepless night the airline phoned: the cases were safe. They arrived later that morning, a little worse for the wear."

Who had the sleepless night? If a whole airline can have one of those, there's a second reason for Woods to own a pilot license and to fly himself in nearly daily dedication to nation-wide appearances signing his novels. The first reason for Woods's pilot license can be found in this prime example of an Amazon Short, which was the perfect length for me to read online, in one sitting, finishing as refreshed as if I'd sipped an iced Coke with healthy fizz, that heavy effervescence that Coca Cola used to have in the 50's.

I believe this story is true. If I hadn't explored Stuart Wood's web site, I might not believe that. Not overdone, Woods's site is stylish, and applies succinct syntax to directly inform who he is, what he's selling, and what he stands for. (See my reviews of PRINCE OF BEVERLY HILLS and RECKLESS ABANDON.)

Another true story is coming soon to Amazon Shorts. Every word, every surprise in COAL & COCA COLA is true. Maybe the reason is the season, for believing truths which may be hard to swallow, until the spirit shines and flavor flashes through.

Coal & Coca-cola

A MAN AND HIS LUGGAGE is as endearingly entertaining as a boy and his baggage might be, trailing twilights through maturity with images of red wagons carting starlight.

If you have been putting off getting your MCSE and am anything like I was, "Next month I will start preparing for my MCSE.". However, I had no place to begin.

This is the place to begin. Buy this book, READ this book, and you WILL have a better knowledge of computer and network basics.

If you are currently working in this field, you'll even understand some of the things you've troubleshooted in the past - it all comes clear.

This book is worth at least 6 stars!

I am a programmer for a small software company. Besides programming, I also do training and I fly places and install client/server database engines (and our app) on various networks; which means that I end up troubleshooting misconfigured networks. We have tech support people who talk to IS people at different companies every day. I have recommended to my boss that he buy a copy of this book for every one of our techs. This book uses clear language and covers all the relevant subjects. It is well-organized and almost free of errors. Kudos to Lisa Donald!

This book is destined to be a classic.

I am not the most educated person in the field of computers or networking, but I am not the stupidest either. I build computers on the side and got interested in getting my MCSE. I got this and 3 other books, this book really starts with the basics. If you are getting your MCSE, you will need more than this, however this will definintly prepare you for the acronyms and vocabulary you will find in more advanced books, so that you will know what they are talking about. It is a priceless reference to me and find myself referring back to it time and time again. I have 2 books of the Sybex MCSE titles and they are both very good, I have not rated the other nor will I mention it now because I have not yet finished it. If you want to get your MCSE I recommend this book. It is fast easy reading and barring what it deals with is the most attention grabbing non-fiction book I have ever read.

This book is extremely simple, but excellent background for those who have little or no knowledge of computer networks and Windows NT. I found it very clear and the descriptions of basic Networking model is much better than any I have found in university course materials. I had never used NT so was pleased to find that this described the basic principes. If you know the basics already, skip it and go straight to the Sybex study guides.

this is a 10 star book FOR NEWBIES TO NT NETWORKING

From the moment I began to read Tory Lynn's "Message Board Romance" I knew I wouldn't be able
to put it down until I finished the entire story.
The author has a special way of getting the reader to feel each person she has created. It
gives the reader knowledge that anything is possible as long as we don't give up. Sometimes
we are dealt sad situations in our life, but if we hang in there and believe we will be given
our tomorrows in abundance. A Message Board Romance shows us that romance lives on.
A must read for everyone I know!

I was attracted to this story because it was very familar to me. I checked out Tory Lynn, and I was right. We share the same publisher so I was eager to purchase and read this story.

I was very impressed with the entire story. Ms. Lynn is a talented writer, and I can't wait to read more of her work. Finding love on a message board is interesting, and the twists and turns of this story was even better.

Excellent!

Romantic fantasy "Message Board Romance" written by Tory Lynn.

Tory....when I started your story, the very first thing came into my mind that I am so late reading your story..wow...you have a style and believe me most of the times I have enjoyed it ..It makes my mood even more lighter.while reading your story I felt, that you have a very good command over the conversation part and I am sure you must be a good orator too.

How did you do this ?where every word turned as a magic and a turning point. Many places I was thrilled reading the next plot.your dictionary of words are really powerful..You are an extremely talented author who portrays well all her character and do justice with them.

You prooved that love and attraction have no barriers ..Rose is really pretty and leaves a question still in reader's mind that How I can be attracted for someone ,I've never met before.?

Tory ,she is a real romance writer where her heart speaks continuosly..Tory..this is your pen name.....? Is Rose your Fav name..?

I am happy that I read your story ..though late....

Awaiting for Tory's next stories:

"The Road to Discovery, A Christmas Story"
"Paige Traverson's Hero in the Night"

Charming and a good read.

"Message Board Romance" by Tory Lynn
For the small amount of only forty-nine cents, I was treated to a wonderful evening of reading pleasure. This short story is written well, and has a most enjoyable plot. This new author shows extreme talent and I will definitely read her debut book now in print. " My Charming Protector" I sure hope more will be coming soon.
