On first flick I thought Yeah Great! the stuff in this book really nice and I'd love to have most of it somewhere in my house...where can I buy them!! On second read I soon started to relise that producing great finishes on furniture, lamp shades, curtains, floors and walls is not as hard as it looks and even someone like ME can achieve it. This book is fantastically laid out with big colourful, basic pictures which take you through the procedures step by step from start to finished product. It's an excellent book if you want some great, and visually stunning effects around the house without needing a degree in interior or graphic design. There are even templates in the back if you want to use the patterns straight from the book. There are also many different colour samples if you're not to sure of what colours go well together. It's also great for making gifts too! If you like to dabble in a little bit of art and craft then this book should definately make it to your bookshelf.

American bathrooms range from the utilitarian to the decadent. In 'Grand Master Baths", Janice Anne Costa draws upon her experience and expertise as the editor of 'Kitchen & Bath Design News' to present a visually enhanced series of bathroom designs that reflect the very cutting edge of what can be accomplished in homes today. From the bathroom as a private sanctuary with all manner of indulgences, styles of furniture, tiles, metal work, lighting, high-tech flourishes, and accessorizing finishing touches, "Grand Master Baths" offers a cornucopia of ideas and images that are as diverse as they are impressive. Of special note is the section dedicated to presenting the bathroom as a part of a Bath Suite, and would incorporate a Sitting Room, a Walk-In Closet, a Dressing Room, a Breakfast Bar, and/or an Exercise Area. Enhanced with a four page Resource Guide, an extensive Glossary of specialized terms, and an Index, "Grand Master Baths" is an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Interior Design reference collections.

This wonderful design book has some great ideas for the master bath, with so many gorgeous photos, you'll be hard pressed not to immediately start planning your own dream bath. These baths are wonderful, complete with fireplaces, skylights, whirlpool tubs for two and even private dressing areas. But even if you don't have a huge bath, this book has good ideas for making the most of what you have, with great storage solutions, lighting ideas and luxury extras like heated towel warmers, mirrors that turn into TVs at the push of a button and heated toilet seats. If you want to be inspired with your master bath, this is definitely a great book. You'll get lots of great ideas, plus you'll get to see some of the most gorgeous baths imaginable. Each chapter even has a section with tips from a master bath designer. I highly recommend this book!

Don't be fooled by the misleading title. This is a collection of hundreds of the best books ever written, condensed into two page summaries. Very very handy, entertaining, and just fun to read. Browse from topics such as literary classics to health and fitness, it includes everything from "Hamlet" to "The Stand" to trivia and quotes and anecdotes. Sports, business and leadership, self-help, little-known facts and fictions, perfect for any occasion.

Great Houses of Ireland is a wonderful book for the Irish, architecture, or home design enthusiast. It is filled with lots of great pictures of some of Ireland's most extravagant castles and houses, both inside and out. The book also includes history and interesting facts about these monumental abodes. If you enjoy European architecture, lavishly decorated homes, and lots of beautiful photography, this would be an excellent book to own. It would also make a great coffee table book with it's hard covers and large size.

This is a wonderful book on interior decoration, covering many different periods of the Western World. It has 40 plates in full color and about 200 illustrations in black and white. It is divided into chapters based on the period (see photo of table of contents). It covers everything from ceiling decor to floors, to furniture and art. Although some of the photos are in black and white, it allows you to see the shapes and contrasts better than if all were in color. I haven't read the entire book, and mostly bought it for the art and decorative ideas. From what I have read in this book, there is a lot of history about the development of each period, which seems quite fascinating, and I plan to sit down with this book for a lengthy read.

Flood's book is THE standard book on this, one of the only remaining examples of Ummayid religious architecture and practically the only intact mosque from the formative years of Islam. The only way it could be improved would be to have a large portfolio of color illustrations of the mosaic decoration, the work of Byzantine artists brought directly form Constantinople.

This book is a collection of Emanuel Tov's essays on the Septuagint. The collection displays remarkable breadth, as well as methodological rigour, making the end product an indespensible tool for anyone wishing to seriously study the Septuagint.

The Uncanny

Review Date: 2005-12-31
Gregor Schneider is one the most important artists working in the sculptural field today. This book details his work for the Venice Biennial but is not exclusive to it. We recieve little insight to the personal impetus Schneider has in creating his environments. But I don't think that would be helpful considering the types of works that he creates. I'm just obsessed with artists personal lives. Indeed, Schneider creates rooms within rooms, doors over doors, houses within houses within galleries, recreations of industrial buildings inside normal buildings, ambiguous plastic bags in corners, mannequins or people lying in the middle of galleries, replica houses, replica families. He does all of this, but with a sinister air of the uncanny. His replication differs from that of Warhols or Koons, his suggestive replications are actually a deeper search into something so ambiguously evil and psychological that it's massiveness can only be represented by the simplicity and blank slate of his work. Things fall apart. There's a terrific essay in this book comparing Freud's idea of the uncanny with Schneiders work, it does much to explain the atmosphere that Schneiders installations create. The photos in the book are small, black & white, and grainy and very suitable for the documentative aesthetic he has created for himself. It's a very small book, probably because at the time of it's publication Gregor Schneider wasn't as internationally known as he is today. But I can't wait for larger publications dealing with this thought provoking and eerie creator. Enjoy.
