I look at this book a lot just to drool over the architecture and the mid-century modern decor. I live in the land of mass produced housing and I long for a home with unusual design and originality and this book takes me to my happy place periodically.

Current but timeless
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-03
The main problem with a book such as this is that it can become outdated so quickly (if you have ever seen a used book from 20 or 30 years ago that was current and hip and modern to that time and horrible outdated now, you know what I mean). Sarah Lynch is concious of that potential problem and presents the material in such a fashion as to avoid being outdated, gives wonderful examples, explains colour principles, displays good photographs, and warns that there are rules for current fashion/interior decoration trends, but you can go ahead and break them if you want to, with guidance on what to watch for by the way of results. Also helpful is the last few chapters on how to correct mistakes if you don't like the results after all. If you have an inkling that you want to go bold but are hesitant, or looking for helpful direction, this is a good book.

This is a very useful study of the history of the book (defined rather broadly) in Japan. It is well written and makes interesting even topics that at first glance seem inherently dull--the chapter on bibliographies and catalogs, for example. Kornicki combines extensive old-fashioned archival scholarship with a good sense for recent theory on such topics as the death of the author, media technologies, and the shifting history of reading practices.

Overall this book was really wonderful.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-05
This book was easy to read with wonderful pictures that really helped you understand what the finished candle would look like. The author used simple easy to follow language and gave you a list of all the tools needed for each project. She also gave you wonderful ideas to follow or use as a jumping off point for your own creations. The tools she suggests are things every one has or can find fairly easy, so there is no need to go to a specialty store or search forever, you can find pretty much everything you need at a Micheal's or craft store near you. So for anyone looking to begin making candles or just looking for creative new ways to make them I highly recomend this book to everyone.

Building Jewish In The Roman East is a scholarly study of ancient Jewish archaeology in the Mediterranean, particularly in small rural villages in Galileein the early Roman period, the development of synagogues as "Jewish associations", and the rush of construction under Herod the Great in the first century BCE. Extensively researched chapters scrutinize tombs, the historical significancd of Biblical events such as Jesus' protest in the Temple Precincts, architectural transitions from synagogues and house churches to purpose-built churches, and much more. An inset selection of color plates rounds out this fascinating, unique, and in-depth examination of historic Jewish architectural designs and motives.

Superb addition to New Age collections & reading lists.
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 27 total.

A companion volume to Tom Bender's superb Silence, Song & Shadows, his Building With The Breath Of Life focuses on providing the reader with a detailed historical, conceptual, and "how to" approach to working with chi energy in the architecture of our offices, homes, and other buildings. Bender writes knowledgeably about theoretical concepts, energetic design tools, exercises for learning to work with chi, analysis of buildings and communities from an energetic perspective, and more. Numerous examples are employed offering the reader an applied clarity to the concepts and issues discussed. Building With The Breath Of Life will prove of immense and practical interest to students of alternative medicine, metaphysical spirituality, feng-shui, architecture, and a New Age approach to body, mind and spirit.
