No need to buy a ticket to France.....this book takes you there in ways only MFK Fisher and possibly Richard Olney managed. I loved it and continue to mine its rich vein of recipes. It seems extraordinary that an American could so truly and sensitively capture the culture of France.

At Home in the Hudson Valley is a beautiful book packed with brilliant photographs. The houses in the book are distinctive and original, the pictures capture the spaces as well as the ideas and personalities of the people who made them. Allison Serrell and the photographer Meredith Heuer pull the vitality and creativity of the Hudson Valley through the pages of the book.

Value for money! I highly recommend it to any one interested in C16 italian life styles. Loads of photos of extant pieces. There is one photo of an islamic incesence ball. I had read/heard/seen one of these some time ago but didn't have any more than a memory of it. Fan-tas-tic!

Cross cultural influnces are also discussed in this book to give a broarder view of Italian society.

A Great Idea Book
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-07
The trend in interior design in recent years has been to have uniform color on walls, bland floor coverings, and even smooth covered furniture. In this new book from Sally Conran and Katherine Sorrell present a refreshing and entertaining look at how patterns can be used to dramatically alter the appearance of a room or a house.

Patterns have also changed in this more recent cycle. Here are patterns that a lot more delicate, a lot more in tune with todays time of environmental concern, a lot more muted, a lot more earth tones, a lot less aggressive. At the same time, you can still get bold and bright colors if you wish (The book has a section called 'bold and brave.'). This is often shown in this book as pillows on a couch, or wall paper on a rather small area. That is, enough to become a focal point for your eyes, but not so strong as to be demanding.

This is a great idea book showing some interesting new concepts in interior design.

Why Athena?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-01
This book developed out of a conference on Athena held at Oxford in April 1998. It seeks to bring together a range of contributions which present the latest research in a number of disciplines, and aims to shed light on the goddess from a variety of angles. By drawing on current research in ancient religion, literature, art and archaeology, the contributions cover a wide and exciting area, not only in terms of geographical and chronological scope, but also in the range of topics. It would be hard to read this book without feeling enriched and moved to investigate the subject further. Among ancient Greek deities, none has enjoyed as rich a life in modern times as Athena, as this book shows. Its detailed introduction by the editors would, on its own, serve as a valuable reference work on Athena in her many guises.

This book looks at Athena's cult, myth and iconography. It also examines political, social, and gendered concerns, and art historical and etymological developments.

Common and recurrent themes are explored, as are the many dividing lines, evolutionary processes, and even contradictory elements which characterise representations of the goddess.

The volume has enhanced my understanding of Athena, and will be a source of inspiration for new ideas and interpretations.

They were not kidding when they titled this book "Attention to Detail."

This is one of the most informative non-textbook on interior design I have ever read. The author goes into great detail on the items she chose and why she chose them-hence the name. "Attention to Detail" is split into three major sections with several chapters in each section. The sections are Casebook, Functional Detail, and Decorative Detail.

The chapters in the Casebook section represent each area in a house. There are several cases described in each chapter. For each case the author describes what the client's desires were, each item in the room, and how it incoporates the clients desires. There is a floor plan of each room. She also describes a concept and how the case illustrates that concept. For example, the first chapter is about living rooms. Case Study 1 is about Ralph and Ann Pucci's living room. They like their environment to be "neat, but easy." The concept this case illustrates is comfort. The author describes how the color, style, and placement of furniture, art, windows, books, etc. was done just so to evoke the feeling of neat and easy comfort.

The second section Funtional Detail contains the chapters surfaces, walls, floors, structure, services, water, heat, light, and storage. In these chapters the author describes different types of items and concepts in each category. For example in the wall category she describes inserting walls, bare walls, cladding, tile, color, and pattern. This section does not give you step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the effects-there are other books for that-it describes some examples in each category and why you might want to incorporate them into a room.

The third section Decorative Detail has chapters on accessories, such as furniture, soft furnishings, and art and ornament. There is also a list of resources for the book.

I like "Attention to Detail" because it not only shows great pictures, but unlike most interior design/decoration books, gives you the decorator's "assignment" and how she accomplished it. The interior design style is modern, but the information can be applied to any style. I think this is a great edition to anyone's interior decoration/design library

The book provides a new perspective on the meaning and structure of Augustine's often misunderstood masterpiece. It illuminates the degree to which the communicative purpose of the work is to convert its readers, i.e. a protreptic purpose.
