This book is fascinating. It is a very complete study of the influence of europen culture, art and crafts on the Maharajas of India, encompassing all forms of consumer goods... cars, jewels, trains, etc, etc. All these works of art are the result of intense cultural and economic exchange between both worlds and the book emphasizes this very well. A scholarly publication well served by wonderful photographs.

Dr. Amin Jaffer is a curator in the Asian Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where he specializes in Indian art and culture during the era of European influence during the British Raj period (1857-1947). With "Made For Maharajas: A Design Diary Of Princely India", Dr. Amin has compiled with narrative commentary an impressive historical overview of art and luxury goods in all manner of media and associated with the aristocracy of the maharajas during these centuries. Superbly illustrated with 290 images (150 of which are in full color), the representative and custom-made artifacts range from private airplanes and luxury cars, to chandeliers, gold dinnerware, couture fashions, fine leather goods, houses, furniture, jewelry, and more. Dr. Amin drew upon the archives of firms that included Louis Vuitton, Boucheron, Chaumet, Cartier, and Hermies, he had access to palace and private collections, and employing his own extensive expertise, has written a text that is as entertaining as it is informative in revealing the extraordinarily varied works commissioned by princes whose personal wealth was exceeded only by their eccentricities. As an impeccable work of scholarship in a coffee-table art book format, "Made For Maharajas" is especially recommended for academic library collections and would make a superb choice as a community library Memorial Fund acquisition.

This was the most beautifully written and photgraphed decorating book I have seen. I own dozens of such books, and I seldom read all of the text, but I read this one from cover to cover. It made me want to lounge in the gardens and explore the house. I highly recommend this book for lovers of home decorating and gardening books. It is exquisitely warm and funny!

I bought this book to help me decorate a house I recently purchased. It has given me several ideas that I hadn't thought of. I love the way Mary Gilliatt delves into a brief history of each room before sharing her thoughts on them. It helps put her ideas into perspective. This is a very well written book with some beautiful pictures and ideas. I recommend this book for anyone interested in decorating as well as any ammateur decorators out there!

"Beyond minimalism there is a more ornamental approach to modern interiors." This statement couldn't be more true and this book is a great guide on navigating the marriage of the contrasting styles. I've often felt that contemporary design was visually a work of art that was cold, but when one chooses the perfect peices it can lead to the most accurate embodiment of personal style.

This is a beatiful addition to the library of anyone interested in art, interior design or the history of both. Together, Sarah Schleuning and Jeremy Aynsley present an interesting history of the pochoir technique - a method of creating coloured illustrations of an interior designers intent. Full of charming full colour pochoir illustrations of the work of France's finest designers, its as fascinating as it is inspirational.

This is a fabulous book not intended for the lay person. The illustrations of French deco rooms is a very welcome change from super-staged photography that's all the rage these days in interior design books and mags. This reminds me of the wonderful fashion illustrations that have bitten the dust over the years (since the 60's) to be replaced by styled-to-death prepubescents in haute couture. It's wonderful to see something so beautifully done by hand get a chance. Buy it immediately if not sooner!!

A perfect setting for the lush gardens flourishing outside. A full view of the rooms, that made Monet's house truly an artists abode with its elegant, yet simple furnishings.

Mary Whitesides draws upon her years of experience and expertise as an interior designer to showcase high-tech, cowboy, rustic country, and regional provincial oriented designs for mountain homes, that are truly spectacular -- and enhanced for the reader with spectacular full-color photography. Of special interest is a remarkable chapter devoted to the creation of truly gorgeous gardens suitable for cool climates and rock soils. There is also a complete resource guide of artisans, manufacturers, and designers which will prove invaluable for anyone seeking to create, modify, or re-design their own mountain home. Mountain Style is simply wonderful browsing.

While cabins can be a year-round fascination, I have a fondness for log cabins in the winter. There is a secret place I like to visit when I want to escape for a weekend and watch movies in a very cozy setting. To own a cabin of my own would seem a dream, but for now it is a "rare" weekend reality.
If you love log cabins, Mountain Style shows cabins with panoramic views, high ceilings and sophisticated designs. This is an eclectic mix of Modern, Arts & Crafts, rustic, country, high-tech and provincial styles.
Mary Whitesides has worked with craft groups all over the world and helps to create original interiors for the Sundance resort. Some of the most beautiful pictures in this book are the natural surroundings like the waterfall or fields of flowers, mountain scenes and newly fallen snow. It is all so romantic. There is even an indoor pool and decorating ideas galore.
After you read this book you may become very inspired and plan a weekend at a cabin. I'd love to live in a cabin, but that dream has yet to come true. Of course, somehow we'd have to figure out how to build a tower nearby. I love cabins and towers.
This is the type of book for fireside reading while snuggled up with a down comforter.

I bought this book as a resource for Theatre Design and it has proven to be a valuable asset. I can look through the photos in the book while researching and use the CD to put together presentations. The book's overall content is wide ranging and detailed, and is organized well. I would recommend this book to anyone in the arts, even if you don't use it for research, it's cool to look though.

I have just finished reading this lengthy book after a month of heated night readings.
This one is really a milestone in the research of the new age phenomenon, as it is the first (and up until now the only) book to seriously and exhaustively research the variety of new age ideas, their inter-connectedness and their origins.
Haanegraaf doesn't leave the discussion on a sociological level, as other authors on the new age have frequently done. He isn't satisifed until he enters the core of every doctrine and theory and explains it thoroughly to the reader.
Haanegraaf covers an unusal amount of material over the 525 pages long primary text of the book. He presents ideas and comments about them briefly and concisely but also profoundly and always in an interesting and intelectually stimulating way.
The different observations and structures Haanegraaf presents in this work are bound to become a basis for future research of the new age phenomenon.
This is one of the best books i've read in a while, and a must for anyone interested in New Age.
