Washington Univ. Prof. Jane Wolff's "Delta Primer" explores the California Delta, both a natural and man-made phenomenon just east of the Bay Area which today is being used or fought over by a diverse constituency, including developers intent on paving it over. Her wonderful, beautifully illustrated book addresses these different dimensions, making the point that the Delta's future has become like a game of chance in which all of us hold the cards. You can see recent reviews of the book by landscape architect Barbara Stauffacher Solomon in the Winter 04 issue of _line (www.linemag.org) and by SF Chronicle urban design writer John King (www.sfgate.com). It's also available in paperback, published by San Francisco's William Stout. A work of art and dedicated scholarship, it's highly recommended. And after you read it, get to work saving the Delta! - John Parman

I was reading part of Kevin Starr's preface to Delta Primer aloud to one of my kids tonight, and thought I'd check in on Jane Wolff--didn't know she taught at Washington University. Clicked through to here and couldn't believe there was only one review. I just bought a second copy (used, for $15? on Amazon) as my first copy has become part of the lending library of life. I know it was loved by two architects and a carpooling advocate here in the Bay Area. . . .
I've only been here for 10 years, and certainly didn't GET the delta until reading this book. But you don't really read it. You immerse yourself in it, you get absorbed by it. You wallow around in it. You let it bang around in your head--in my case for a couple of years, in great detail.
The multi-layered sophistication of the graphics is amazing. The way Wolff conveys fundamental concepts is wonderful. If he doesn't already, Edward Tufte should raise the book up in his hands every time he conducts a high priced workshop.

This was also added to my design collection of southwest decorating at its best. This is a very enjoyable book I always look at this for more items for another project. Or just to enjoy what someone else has done to make their living environment lovely.

I enjoyed the pictures in this book, they're like looking at physical replicas of a dream world.. the use of color and depth in the room, and the variety of houses shown were awesome. From open naturally lit and colored spaces to lofts adorned with bright Mexican artwork each is different and inspiring. The lighting in some of them is really unusual. I recommend this book. I felt it was a spiritual experience looking at the pictures!

In Designing With Spirituality: The Creative Touch, Carol King surveys more than thirty residences, showing how each reflects the individual designer's spiritual viewpoint through design and how each one has reinforced and elevated its owner's spiritual perspective. King also reevaluates good interior design in terms of its profound connection to the human spirit. Designing With Spirituality is a welcome and greatly appreciated contribution to personal, professional, and community library interior design reference collections.

Enjoyed reading the history of diners and viewing the wonderful color pictures. Only thing that stumped me was there was no listing for the diner on the cover. Found out later that it was called the "66 Diner" in New Mexico. Other than that it is a very good book.
Any coffee table in america would be thrilled with "Diners"

This book presents a charming look at some important historical dollhouses in the Rockefeller Folk Art Center. Good pictures and texts. Not useful if you are looking for realistic projects for your own dollhouse crafting hobby, but for the historian, this is a wonderful look at historical dolls, dollhouses, and furnishings that were used over generations as toys and learning devices for girls. For extravagant historical dollhouse rooms created by and for an adult collector (that you would perhaps want to emulate in your own hobby), see another book, Miniature Rooms, about the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago.

I consider this book to be one of the best dollhouse references out there. Every page has color photos. Many of the furniture pieces are photographed individually. Each photograph is clear and detailed. The author is careful to note when a piece is original, antique, or modern. Everything in this book is well-researched and documented. You could carve replica furniture pieces from the photographs in here, they are that good!
Needless to say, the houses featured in here are gorgeous in their own right. My favorite part of this book are the great photos of the Grodnertal peg-wooden dolls. This book contains some of the best Grodnertal photos I've ever seen!

Quite simply, I love you. Your art books beguile me out of whole paychecks. Just the sight of a Taschen flexicover fills me with wonder and delight. Awestruck, I turn your books over in my hands. I even smell the pages while gleefully noting the paperstock. You're a real pro, Benedikt. From comic book publisher to art world King. Your quality is deliciously heartbreaking. My friends and I have spent many an eve discussing your work with envious gleaming eyes and admiring sighs over glasses of wine. Domus beckons from your website; from bookshelves; and from museum bookstores everywhere. "Own me," it says. "Six hundred smackers," I reason. Instead, I buy "Collecting Contemporary, ($30)," a sophisticated "How To" book for the budding afficionado. It tides me over and yet... Domus.

Beautiful Homes, Spectacular Settings

With a plethora of building sites offering truly spectacular settings, as well as a busy metropolitian area, relatively low building costs, and resort areas to attract the rich and famous, Colorado offers a collection of 'Dream Homes' unlikely to be found anywhere else in the world. In putting this book the authors could choose from the best of the best and they did. Both the houses and the background settings are spectacular. There's something about a huge mansion, sitting by a lake, with snow capped mountains in the background that creates a picture worth remembering.
Of course the houses are outstanding in their own right. Most of the houses, especially those remote from the city of Denver, carry a western motif, there's something about being in the west that calls for big wooden beams, log cabin construction, and wrought iron inside. Still, as you would expect, there is room for other architectural style, whatever the customer wants: tudor, French, modern - anything goes. The one common characteristic is that these homes all fill every aspect of being a dream home.
