Movies to Manage By uses film in the right way. Clemens and Wolff are wonderful writers, and their approach to film and leadership is insightful, meaningful, and entertaining. I have a small business and so am dealing with a lot of the dilemmas that the authors raise, and their observations are right on key. The subject matter seemed kind of light when I first saw the book, but reading it I see that it really is a book of substance with helpful information for people like me. Thank you.

What a terrific concept! Select a number of movies and then analyze what they reveal about "lessons in leadership." Specifically, here are the themes:

"Following Your Hunch" (The Hunt for Red October)

The Importance of Improvisation (Apollo 13)

The Failed Promise of Heroic Leadership (Dead Poets Society)

Turning Around a Faltering Team (Hoosiers)

Socratic Leadership (12 Angry Men)

Turning Around a Troubled Organization (Twelve O'Clock High)

When Leadership Fails (Citizen Kane)

Morality and Leadership (Wall Street)

This is a book which I wish I had written. The authors are to be commended, first for thinking about writing such a book and then for doing it. The result is a brilliant piece of work. The writing style has snap, crackle, and pop. The insights are of great value as we are helped to correlate the circumstances in each movie with the daily circumstances in which most of us are obliged to function each day.

After you read this book, you will perhaps think of other movies which also could have been discussed by the authors. For me (what great fun!), I would nominate Paths of Glory, Zulu, Executive Suite, Command Decision, Tunes of Glory, Braveheart, Jeremiah Johnson, Pork Chop Hill, Pale Rider, and Patton.

If you are a movie buff, if you are looking for a great read, and if you agree with me that much of value can be learned about leadership from the movies, obtain a copy of this book ASAP.

Very useful and interesting

What a fun read this is! Business books tend to be so boring, so it was great to read something original and different. And the link of movies to management is not a stretch at all. Just good sensible advice presented in a really engaging writing style. I liked this very much.

A useful guide for business management courses, offering students creative insight into basic leadership principles. In "Movies to Manage By" John Clemens and Melora Wolf creatively utilize film as an instructive tool to convey leadership in a unique approach. A great book to be used in any graduate or college business program

In preparing for an annual management seminar that I was leading, someone suggested this book. It was a great help in being able to illustrate easily some useful take away management points for my group. Showing film clips as part of the day's events was a great way to break up the monotony and I found the participants sat up and listened to each segment, obviously interested. I would recommend this book for those who don't work for large companies who are always sending you outside for training. The book gives you all the items for you to do it yourself!

Good manners never go out of date and neither will this book. And looking and feeling comfortable in new situations is a skill of ongoing value. For 20 years I have given this book to my kids and hundreds of their upwardly mobile friends because it is the single best guide to "high-class" behavior and etiquette ever published.

If you know every thing in this book, it is still a good refresher. If you don't, it might well save your life! Remember, kids, the faster you are moving upward in this world, the more "pop quizzes" you will take on this material every day for the rest of your lives!

Dated, but still valuable!

I can't say I was fully suprised when my local library finally took this book from the shelf due to its age. What really suprised me was that I had to come here to actually buy it! Most etiquette books are usually the type to sit on a 'For Sale' rack until nearly eternity.

'Outclassing the Competition' is a bit dated but the advice is invaluable to anyone who would seriously wish to advance themselves socially and be seen as having more manners than most of the general public. Even a slight usage of the techniques in this book would set a reader above a great number of the general public these days. Ranging from pronunciation of words and use of terms, to cooking and entertaining this book has nearly all of what most would want to find out and apply to the 'better' situation life has dealt them.
My only wish would be for Ms. Darling to come up with an updated, revised version of this wonderful work. Simply because while 'class' never goes out-of-fashion, times do change.

Still Timely After nearly 20 Years!

I have been referring to this book for nearly 20 years ! As I have risen in the ranks of Corporate Events, I have leaned heavily on Jan Darling's knowledge to make both my client and me look good. Yes, some of the suggestions are a little dated ( Godiva chocolate is not the status purchase it once was) but knowing how to behave in unfamiliar situations, knowing what to say and displaying beautiful manners never, ever go out of style. And,no, I am not selling my copy for love nor money - would love for Ms. Darling to issue an updated edition, though!

I can't believe this book is out of print. My copy of this edition has been circulated to several executives who lacked the time or training to perform skillfully in social events such as formal dinners and parties. This is the ideal book for the folks who had to spend their energy in university learning mathematics rather than learning how to survive in formal social settings.

Are you uncomforable in certain social settings because you were not taught certain skills others take for granted? Are you surrounded by people with money that seem to know thingss they take for granted that you do not? This book helps in so many areas, that I have given it as a gift to many friends in the past. It is simply a a book which is rich in details for social survival for those of us that grew up with tv dinners and one fork..and now...for whatever reason, find ourselves in uppercrust surroundings and feel out of place. The book is getting a bit dated, but I recommend it to anyone. Some items covered are: how to pronounce wine names..basic wine knowledge..how to conduct yourself at a very formal table setting...how to be waited on...what a wine steward is...pronouncing designer names correctly...like do you really know how to correctly pronounce Givanchy? It's in the book and much, much more....If you read this book, you can pick up small things like putting your silverware on your plate in an "x" to show that you are finished with your plate. It is endless with advice for all of us that were not raised with proper social knowledge and helps you in business settings,,gives advice on gifts, tipping, clothes. My only complaint is that the book is getting outdated. Tips in the book that were very clever, like giving a box of Godiva as a thoughtful gift with class..are showing their age. I wish the demand was there for the author to update her book, which I believe handled correctly, would have been a major best seller. The book is easy to read, and divided into major areas of concern. Even though it may be difficult to buy now,,,get it! You will have no regrets.

Many candidates mistakenly think that if they only get the interview their personality and speaking skills will seal the deal. As a result, they do not practice or put their best foot forward. The book is a great tool for the experienced executive, inside candidate or new graduate - everyone benefits from evaluating their unique fit for a postion using the structure and advice set forth by Drake. There is nothing like taping yourself answering the 10 most common questions to appreciate your opportunity to clarify your value proposition.

I have used this book personally and given it to my friends and colleagues - who have used it. I know of no one who has used this book and not been offered the job.

This book is only 200 pages and can be read in a day or two. It is well organized. The first section is how to locate that perfect job and land an interview. Drake makes suggestions for networking, employment agencies, and executive search firms, with examples of contact letters and other great materials. He then takes you into the interview prep phase. He starts with helping you look right - professional, prepared, and confident. The next sections take you through the interview process, and he goes through the 10 "standard questions" asked by interviewers. "Tell me about yourself" "What are you strengths/weaknesses" and so forth. I throughly enjoyed how he assists you in forumlating the proper responses so they are professional and you feel confident. He then assists you in follow-ups, and the much desired negotiation phase. Drake helps you to be prepared from start to finish with this book. You MUST go through his skill builders as these are key to being prepared, confident, and winning that perfect job. I strongly recommend this book to all in the job market, whether it be administrative, technical, or other. I won my first interview and got the job I had dreamed of. The others did not answer as confidently as I did, nor did they state thier answers in a professional and knowledgeable manner. I owe my new job to this book. Be prepared, be professional, and be confident. Read this book, do the skill builders on paper and go over them. This is one book that will help you land that perfect career. Good luck!

This is a very interesting book on evolution (actually it is one of my favorites). In spite of the seriousness of the subject, this book also provides large quantities of amusing data which can even be used on a relaxed pub conversation. If you ever thought about the significance of sexual behavior in nature, the advantages of each type of behavior (monogamy x polygamy) and some other not-so-common issues (i.e. sperm shape and size, testicle size, ejaculatory volume etc) this is the book for you. I had a lot of fun reading it and even a few laughs.

And They're Off!

If you ever wondered about such glorious subjects as...okay, it's a book about sex, but the scholarly parts of sex normally only pondered by zoologists, not the boxing ring style blow-by-blow accounts you might read in novels. I'll tell you, my fellow Amazonians, if ever you want to feel stupid in what you thought you knew about the wonderful world of sex, read-this-book. And if ever you want to be amazed to death about the wonderful world of sex, read-this-book. And if you never EVER want to eat sushi again, read-this-book!

Did you know there are many species out there that have multiple schmeckles? No, it's true! A schmeckle here, a schmeckle there, a schmeckle everywhere! And did you know that some species die during copulation? And here I always thought nuns were just trying to scare us about that! Or that threesomes, foursome, heck hundredsomes are perfectly natural among many members of the phylum Chordata? Of which we and 97% of all life-forms are a part, folks! And how about the fact that in nature when studied in its entirety it is more common for males to raise the offspring than it is females? Okay, I don't think this book said that, but it's the sort of fact it would have had if it had included it. (Did you follow that?)

Seriously, ladies and non-ladies, this book is great! It studies reproduction as carried out by virtually every species known to exist. It elevates the mind to consider sex as evolution's largest tool, and it has a vigorous full tilt go at sex as a scholarly topic rather than the fodder for humor or arousal it often is. (None of you are turned on or laughing, are you? I should hope not!) Overall Promiscuity: An Evolutionary History of Sperm Competition does for biology what Schoolhouse Rock did for mathematics and other really, really dull stuff. I mean it makes an otherwise universally boring subject like sex fun!

bizzare but fascinating! :)

i hesitate to write a review of this book because it might appear 'pervy' just to comment ;) but in all fairness, this book is worth reading for anyone interested in science, biology, sex, or ourselves :) ..anyone who enjoys this book would also probably enjoy the weekly publication: NewScientist :)

Stranger-than-fiction sex book

Review Date: 2000-10-06
"Promiscuity" is about sex. Well, I suppose that much is obvious. And sex always makes for great reading. We are all obsessed and entertained by it. Still, this book took me by surprise. It is not your typical book about sex: offering cheap thrills or mundane, overdigested sociopsychological chatter. It is a unique guided tour of the bizarre world of reproduction throughout the animal kingdom. It is also a glimpse into the odd world of evolutionary biologists, in this case those who spend their lives contemplating the meaning behind all of the bizarre variations on sex in the animal world. Apparently, these highly respected academic scholars go to work each day to figure out such things as why some fruitflies make sperm that are 20 times longer than their bodies and why others produce seminal fluids that are toxic to their mates, why some marine flatworms have dozens of penises, why certain slugs have a penis that is longer than their body and that occassionally become so horrifically tangled about their mate that they must be chewed off, why dunglfies sometimes drown their mates in wet dung, why females of one species of catfish fertilize their eggs by drinking sperm, and why deep-sea anglerfish males bite their mates and never let go. The list goes on and on, preparing me with remarkable ammunition for the next dinner party.

Yet this stranger-than-fiction book is not merely a collection of Ripley's sex tales. It is a well-organized treatise of cutting edge science that masterfully instructs the reader as to the common evolutionary threads that define the underlying nature of sex. The reader is left, for example, with an abundant understanding of why sex between men and women is more about conflict than cooperation, which personally clarified much in my life. The first paragraph of the book reads in part, "Status for the Mediterranean male is all-important, and tradition dictates that a man who fails during a hunting expedition can expect his wife to be unfaithful. In parts of Italy it is widely believed that a man must shoot a honey buzzard each year if his wife is to remain faithful. So strong is this belief, and so powerful a motivating force is the idea of female fidelity, that even after they have emigrated to the United States many Italian men return home each year to shoot a honey buzzard. It is not a little ironic that in order to fulfil this ritual a man usually leaves his wife behind. Moreover, in some instances it is the wife who actually encourages him to go!" The remainder of the pages are as engaging as this first one. I recommend this book to anyone that ever has had or ever hopes to have sex.

If you want to be grossed out, amused and steeped in leading scholarship all at the same time, this may be your book. In a fun, concise and well structured book, Birkhead gives us an up-to-date account of sperm competition in animals. The examples used are wide-ranging, from bed bugs to people, and never fail to raise an eyebrow. A Doay sheep female copulated 163 times in five hours and a man eating sushi once learned that the wiggly things in his tongue owed their thanks to a squid spermatophore. Beyond these exemplars of bizarre, though, this book contains cogent arguments for the place of sperm competition. It kindly sandbags the sensational claims of Baker and Bellis (in their Human Sperm Competition), giving us a fairer treatment in its place, both with respect to humans (where sperm competition has been of relatively little recent importance, evidenced by the relatively small testes and poor sperm quality of males) and numerous other taxa. The section on female benefits to multi-male mating is also worth noting. Evidence is amassed for female benefits in obtaining sufficient sperm, resources and improving the genetic quality of their offspring (e.g. through pairing her genes with a good MHC complement). These last ideas on genetic benefits will continue to inspire new research, just as other ideas in the book should too (accessory glands such as the prostate may have originated in the evolutionary battle of the sexes). It could be stated that the book overstates the case for sexual conflict, when benign agreements have been reached; after all, it wouldn't pay over evolutionary time for the faithful California mouse or swan to employ cruel mechanisms at expense to a partner. Yet this book is worth the strange questions and looks you'll get on the bus when people see its cover and look over your should while reading it (just as happened to my yesterday).

This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews.

The information regarding how and why dogs react to emotional energy, body posture, breathing and even eye contact is fascinating, and the training techniques in part 3 are extremely useful. The underlying and best quality about this book is how the fun times and the relationship a person has with their dog is the most important part of dog ownership.

I've read many dog training books and this is by far the best. If people could just understand how well positive training works then they could understand why negative punishment isn't the best idea.
I have an BS in psychology and specialized in behaviorism. Positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement is the best way to train. I am not going to say that punishment doesn't work but I think all to often it actually harms the dog. To be the pack leader doesn't mean you beat the dog into submission. To gain respect you have to earn respect and using punishment inspires fear
not respect. Fear makes the dog obey but is that what we really want? for our dogs to fear us?!

This book is for anyone interested in dogs.

This is one incredible book. It is exactly as the title states, Companion to Competition. The book starts out with basic rules or concepts that apply universally to teaching your dog good house manner or competitive obedience. The techniques are foolproof and can be easily incorporated into every day interactions with your dog. I started reading this book when my most recent dog was 8 weeks old. This book has allowed me to achieve a bond and level of trust with my dog that I did not realize was possible. I have read many dog training books and this book is the best by far.

I loved this book. My favorite character is Ana Suarez and I thought that Ana was a real nice person. Ana did what she loved and even though Clarisse was mean to her she was still nice. For the people who have the generation dolls should know that it is kind of wierd reading the book with the generation girls in it. I just wish they were still out. I havn't read all the books though. But this was truly a good book. I loved it! I read it in a day. I got it at noon and finished at night. It's sort of like a short/long story.

Ana Saurez has been training for the triathlon for a year. She thinks everything is going pretty good until she realizes that Clarisse really doesn't like her... not at all. Then her ankle gets sprained... pure bad luck, she thinks. Until she sees Barbie's video tape of the race. Will she be able to run in the triathlon?

When Generation Girl dolls were introduced in the spring of last year, I passed them up. Then, in the fall, these books came out and I was hooked on all things Gen Girl. This is a favorite for anybody into sports or who's feeling overwhelmed and like they can't overcome something in their lives. In this story, Ana Suarez meets a guy, gets pushed by a girl, sprains her ankle, breaks up with a guy, gets back with the guy, the same girl that pushed her becomes her personal coach, and Ana still goes on to compete in three Olympic sports. Whew! This girl is busy. But never too bust for her friends, Barbie Roberts, Blaine Gordon, Chelsie Peterson, Lara Morelli-Strauss, Nichelle Williams and Tori Burns. This is a book that always keeps you guessing and has a great, though somewhat predictable ending. Even though this says it's not for ages over 12, that is sooo untrue. It's a great weekend read for older girls, too. Don't feel embarrassed or even hesitate to try this book. It's not my personal favorite in the series but well worth a good look. So? What are you waiting for?

While written for those preparing a dissertation or thesis, the book proves extremely useful for the undergraduate discovering the world of research. Unfamiliar terms are thoroughly explained along with a clear illustration of many potentially obscure methodologies. This book is a "must have" for anyone preparing for a research project.

Excellent introduction to both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Useful for beginning students and for those with more experience in research methods. Especially useful for reporting research. If I were teaching a methods class, I would use this book without hesitation.

Fascinating case studies on globalization; robust theory.

As a businessman, lawyer and former banker I was fascinated by the six case studies. My academic side was awed by the theoretical mission. The chapter on the origins of offshore finance had me emailing my banking friends to say "Did you know that..." The book really shed light on what is going on in the business-government world. Makes me wish I had pursued political science instead of business and law! Or, as Murphy points out, they should be seen as overlapping, not separate. I was less familiar with some of the concepts in the academic and theoretical chapters (1 & 8), such as transaction costs and asset specificity, but Murphy explains them well and makes me see the world differently. Anyway, a good read. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand how globalization affects so many aspects of our lives -- aspects that most people are not even aware of.

Dale Murphy's "The Structure of Regulatory Competition" should be required reading for anyone interested in corporate social responsibility, globalization, international law and regulatory structure. The book is both smart and extremely readable, dealing with complex subjects in accessible prose.

The case studies are particularly useful. Examining a diverse set of cases such as CFC production, offshore finance, infant formula, dolphin-tuna debates, etc., Murphy is able to weave an argument that predicts international political outcomes by attacking cases that vary. His revisiting of the dolphin-tuna wars is particularly well-done as it provides a new perspective on an oft-misunderstood case.

If you want to understand globalization beyond the sound bytes and headlines, definitely take a look.

There is an assumption that gets rehashed quite often that firms seek countries that have lax regulations in order to take advantage of low government involvement. The result, so the assumption goes, is a "race to the bottom" between countries seeking FDI, foreign exchange, etc. Professor Dale Murphy illustrates quite effectively that this assumption is not always the case. As expected, the reality is quite complex. The good news is that Murphy navigates the complexity with ease and relays the true story in accessible prose.

This is one of those books that specialists and non-specialists alike will find extremely valuable.

I teach a PhD seminar in International Political Economy and was delighted to discover this gem of a new book, in time to order for my syllabus next fall. Rare for political science, I enjoyed reading it and couldn't put it down. My own rave review and synopsis will follow shortly, but for now here is what Robert O. Keohane (Duke, Political Science), David Vogel (Berkeley, Political Science and Haas School of Business), and Kenneth A. Oye (MIT, Political Science) have written about this fine piece of scholarship.

Robert O. Keohane: "THE STRUCTURE OF REGULATORY COMPETITION indicates how important the strategies of large corporations are for global and national regulatory policy. Norms and ideas sometimes play a role, but to explain outcomes, Dale Murphy reminds us, we have to understand material interests."

David Vogel: "A first-rate contribution to both research and theory on how economic interests affect regulatory policy-making in a global economy. Murphy makes a persuasive case for the critical role played by industry structures in shaping patterns of both international and domestic regulation. This is an important book whose original analysis of the dynamics of both the 'Delaware' and 'California' effects deserves to be widely discussed and debated."

Kenneth A. Oye: "This book is a major contribution to debates over globalization. Some argue that integration spawns competitions in regulatory laxity. Others maintain that integration encourages upward regulatory harmonization. Murphy transcends this debate, identifying conditions that explain when regulations will drop toward a lowest common denominator, when regulations will converge upward, and when regulatory differences will persist. Murphy presents meticulously researched cases on regulations governing environmental performance, shipping registration and flags-of-convenience, labor standards, and capital adequacy standards. These case studies are theoretically insightful and empirically rich fables of globalization, complete with morals. Essential reading for an era when international trade conflicts center on domestic regulatory differences."

Built around a creative yet rigorous theoretical framework of investigation, Murphy delves into the details of international political economy. He offers a clear understanding of how globalization has changed the dymamic interaction between firms and public policies. This book is a refreshing break from much jargon-laden and self-referential academic work.

Here's what John H. Jackson, University Professor at Georgetown Law School, says about this book:

"Dale Murphy has taken the subject another big step forward, by choosing a new, effective, and highly empirical approach. ... The explanation bridges studies of law, economics, political science, and business strategy. It is a fascinating study which closely examines the real world, and is an important contribution to the literature of international economic rules.

"Professor Murphy successfully challenges several orthodoxies in international political economy and law and offers a new theoretical understanding based on firms' regulatory preferences. ... These case-studies -- some familiar, some new -- also illuminate controversies over 'globalization' and responses to them such as corporate social responsibility and public-private partnerships.

"The compelling historical narratives draw on the author's work experience in the private sector, government, and development agencies in over 30 countries, as well as his academic training. Braving provocative questions, the book shines light on the black box of policy-making and analyzes the fundamentally important role that firms play in shaping regulations.

"It makes a significant theoretical contribution to the field in the analysis and differentiation of firms' varied regulatory preferences, rather than treating these as monotonic. Not content with vague generalizations about 'market forces' or 'the private sector', the book burrows beneath superficial press releases and digs deep into firms' strategies and the political process by which regulations emerge. This painstaking research pays off both in the insights it generates and the robustness of the arguments."

The First Wives Club and Waiting to Exhale meets "Real Women Have Curves," "Stand By Me," and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." It's "Life Lessons for my Latina Girls," with life lessons for us all mixed in a curandera's brew of magic, friendship, family, and truth. Four amigas go off to see the wizard in a decidedly non-"Thelma and Louise" spree that includes saving a pregnant girl from abuse, stopping a robbery), confronting bears and a daughter's lesbian love, and rediscovering love. When they get to the Wizard--a legendary curandera--will she give them a heart, the nerve, the brains, and the freedom to get home to Kansas? Don't settle for any novel but Unsettling. You'll cheer for the laughing, catfighting, healing, and love these four sisters-by-friendship experience.

I loved this book. The characters were very real and so much like women I know. Strong, intelligent, warm and funny, the characters leapt off the page and into my heart. I really liked these women. I wanted them as my friends. The problems they had and they ways in which they dealt with or avoided them were touching and real.

This book made me laugh and cry. It was wonderful storytelling with well developed and believable characters. I will keep this book on the shelf I reserve for favorite, read again books.

I picked this book up after reading the flap and the description, and decided to go ahead and buy it. I'm REALLY glad I did!! The characters are fun and REAL--they speak the way my friends and I speak. It's laugh-out-loud funny, and I kept reading passages aloud to my husband because I enjoyed it so much. I've already passed the book on to a friend, and she loves it, too. Definitely a five star read!

I just finished reading the book. The characters were so real and deep. I really got to know and love them. They felt like real women with real strengths and real problems and the real power to change their lives for the better. This book will encourage you to un-settle and go for what you really want in life. Every 30 or 40-something woman should read this and feel the power for herself.
