Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-30
This work provides the perfect lexicon for understanding the everchanging world around us. Kash and Rycroft provide for a total reconceptualization of technology, innovation, and public policy. Provided here are the keys for an adaptive, dynamic strategy for both competition and public policy.

Useful for managers in any industry (including the public sector)and especially for those in industries most rife with complexity such as information technology, engineering, electronics, farming, machine tools, robotics, computer science, etc. (although it will soon be everything).

"Divide each problem into as many parts as possible."
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-22
This Cartesian principle resonates throughout Gill's narrative about the violence in Northern Ireland, as he represents the many competing forces in the battle to control Northern Ireland. Catholic Provo extremists are bent upon assassinating Ian Paisley, a self-annointed Protestant minister and firebrand Loyalist intent upon establishing his own absolute right to rule Ulster. Paisley's security staff in Belfast, equally bloodthirsty and equally irrational, have their own plans for payback to the Catholic minority and their supporters in the south.

The official governments of the two parts of Ireland have their own interests, not always consistent with those of the extremists on both sides, and the British further complicate the issue. The police of both areas operate independently, and some high officials are actively in cahoots with leaders of various factions. Into this vividly described maelstrom, comes Supt. Peter McGarr of the Garda Siochana, as he investigates the seemingly unrelated death of a rugby star.

With the most powerful opening section Gill has ever written, this novel stands apart from the rest of the McGarr series and easily holds its own as an independent novel. Though the characters usually associated with McGarr do make some minor appearances, the narrative's strength lies not with the Garda but with the vividly portrayed characters involved in the political unrest. McGarr himself does not even appear in the novel until p. 65.

Readers unfamiliar with the complexities of the troubles in Northern Ireland may find it a bit difficult to keep track of who's who and who's on which side, and even the participants don't always know, as people frequently cross borders and change alliances. This is a stunning novel, however, with an ending as complex as the conflicts themselves. With no humor to disguise the violence and sadness afflicting the Six Counties, Gill writes this one "straight." Mary Whipple

A kaleidoscopic tour of Latin American religion in motion
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-07
This is a great collection of insightful essays, showing many dimensions of change in Latin America's churches. We have stories of husband-wife evangelical teams in the slums of Brazil, Catholic lay catechists in Peru, or activists for Mother Mary, inspired more by the ministrations of local grandmothers than church fathers.

The contributors document growing movements among both the poor and the rich. They show declining interest in contests over religious power, and a rise of more positive kinds of competition. While progressives offer their services in the impoverished barrios, conservatives offer formal education and high ritual to the affluent. As contributor Brian Froehle explains, "in the final analysis, the Venezuelan church simply goes in many directions at once, and the most compelling result of the struggles between conservatives and progressives has been that both the winners and the losers are stronger than ever today". (p.113)

I found the both book realistic and respectful in describing local people's efforts to move their communities in new directions.

An Important Little Book About an Important Subject

Although this book is only 20 pages long, it contains helpful information about the concept of fair trade. Americans have so much, and it is hard for us to imagine the degree of poverty in other third-world countries. Rose Ericson begins to introduce the subject of what fair trade means to these nations. To us it is only a $1 sometimes, but that $1 in a poor nation can supply food for a day to an entire family. In our hurry to accumulate material goods, we must be careful to not take advantage of the artisans and producers of these third-world nations. Fair trade is a concept whose time has come.

If you want to solve some extremely challenging problems in math, you should defintely own it!! The problems are like many of the hardest qualifying exam problems that you take during your 2nd year at graduate school--math major. It would be helpful to improve your problems solving skills. The problems are harder and longer than the Putnam. But if you work out a few of them, you will find it easy to do the Putnam problems. Highly recommended anyone interested in problem soloving.

Six years after publication, this is still an outstanding primer on the business of healthcare at the organizational level. I was impressed with Prof. Robinson's understanding of the industry from an economic perspective, and enjoyed his straightforward discussions of the market forces that have shaped the industry over the past twenty years. Highly recommended for those wanting to learn more about the fundamental business drivers of HMOs, IPAs, PHOs, and multispecialty medical groups.

The Average tenture for a CIO is three to five years. Why?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-18
1. The technology leader of tomorrow must be a businessperson first, with all the leadership and people skills of any other senior executive.

2. In 1991, a study by Deloitte & Touche reported the average tenure of a CIO was three years and that almost one-third of all corporate CIO unwilling depart from their posts. In 1995, Computer Science Corp reported tenure of five years.

3. A ComputerWorld survey of Fortune 1,000 CEO found that 64% doubted the value of their IT investment. Among the reasons for this negative perception was failure to understand governance, strategic misalignment, lack of proper communication, unrealistic expectations, the failure to bring new technologies into the organization in a timely fashion, lack of innovative uses of technology, and a misunderstanding of how costs and how value should be accessed.

4. Strategic Alignment Modeling starts from the premise that every change made in the business strategy affects the business structure, the IT strategy, and the IT infrastructure.

5. Many CIOs, fail to make clear the gains from using technology to automate a process.

6. CIOs face the difficulty of delivering applications on time and within budget.

7. Businesses look to technology leaders to be the prime movers in the use of technology, which is why technology leaders need to avoid personal attachment to a specific system. These leaders are determined to protect what they are familiar with and to maintain the control that a large, single system provides - that they ignore all recommendations for change.

8. Among the most frequently heard complaints about CIOs is that they promise improvements from new technologies that simply do not materialize.

9. Senior management approves cost of new technology based on gains in productivity over a five-year period and that business volume by providing customers with efficient, high quality service.

10. Divisional Information Officer establishes a structure where the CIO works closely with senior management. This is done so the units could each find the best business solution for their IT needs- developing their own systems, or contracting with either outsourcers or the corporate IS group producing coherency of vision, maximizing buying power, using best-practices, and not sacrificing long-term viability by adopting short term strategies.

11. InformationWeek suggest that IT personnel are too important to be bottled up in any single part of the company. It should be divided into four primary functions: data services, building applications, strategic planning, and enforcement of the rules through the executives of the organization.

12. The CIO may have the power to take away any business unit's IT franchise if they do not adhere to the principles established by the governing coordinating body.

13. CIO reveal in a 251 market survey that 96 percent can predict information expeditures, occupancy costs, head count capacity and price/performance for the next three years. They often are signing nine-year outsourcing contracts. CIOs have no way to measuring their needs and costs for the outsourcing project.

14. A strong, small core IT group is necessary to develop and manage the outsourcing arrangement, and to build new arrangements if those in place break down.

15. At companies such as IBM, Xerox, Kodak, and Merrill Lynch, recent CIOs have been fast-track executives with records of managing important non-technological aspects of the business.

16. The IT group must be prepared to grow, which means switching to open systems that can expand in far smaller increments

This book is a major source who studies on theories of corporatism. The book does not only present a sophisticated analysis on theories of corporatism but also give an empirical evidence for the Dutch case.
