The Wisdom of the Poets

In December 1941 Abba Kovner, hiding outside Vilna, understood that the Nazis were going to murder all Jews, though the facts at his disposal did not support his certainty. This was the clairvoyance of the poet at its clearest.
This anthology is so valuable precisely because poets and writers sometimes understand things better, and the Shoah is almost inexplicable. The anthology is accompanied by a volume in which scholars who are educators ponder how to understand and use the literature. Fascinating.

A MUST for teachers of Holocaust literature

This book is truly a MUST for teachers of Holocaust literature. The 27 Holocaust narratives, which are in themed, chronological order, are a classroom treasure. This book provides the specifics to teach them thoroughly and wisely. The editors present options to introduce and personalize Holocaust history and are completely aware of what time constraints all teachers face. The stories are typically short in length but not short on substance. Details regarding methods and materials are provided in a clear manner.

For those new to teaching Holocaust literature, there are concise literary explications, readable and informative analyses and detailed personal commentaries to help even the novice teacher feel comfortable exploring this era. For those who have been teaching classic Holocaust novels and diaries, a wealth of short literature is interpreted here, affording teachers the opportunity to present an overview of the Holocaust or an in-depth study of its various aspects.

As an English teacher who teaches a unit on Holocaust lit, I can honestly say this is the best text on the market.

An invaluable print resource for teaching about the Holocaust

The Call of Memory will prove to be an invaluable resource for teaching high school and college-age students about the Holocaust through literary narratives. Short stories by Holocaust survivors and contemporary writers are included in the anthology. For each selection, an in-depth literary analysis is provided by the accompanying Teacher's Guide. An entire Holocaust Literature curriculum could be developed using The Call of Memory. The companion volumes, however, are relevant not only to the study of literature and language arts but will also offer enrichment for courses in history, social studies, humanities and religion.

These books further remind us of why print still matters in the online age. Comparable Internet-based Holocaust instructional materials would be hard to find. Teachers will appreciate the chronological/thematic organization of the volumes along with the connection to content standards. Students will benefit from the occasion to read these literary selections in which vivid imagery and intimacy of characters and events promote an understanding of the Holocaust. As Elie Wiesel spoke in his 1986 Nobel Prize lecture, "Remembering is a noble and necessary act. The call of memory, the call to memory, reaches us from the very dawn of history."

This Teacher's Guide is an excellent resource. The stellar literary selections in the complementary literary anthology provide the opportunity to delve more deeply into the work of one writer or to study various writers on the same topic. The analytic essay accompanying each narrative enriches background knowledge and stimulates critical thinking while the pedagogic essay provides clear, thoughtful suggestions and guidance. The 2-volume Call of Memory is a sensitive and valuable resource for those who choose to grapple with this daunting subject.

As an ordinary teacher with an extraordinary passion for educating people about the Holocaust, I find the Anthology and the Teacher's Guide to be unique in the world of Holocaust studies. The complimentary set is exactly what every Holocaust educator needs. Nothing is missing:The narratives are in themed, chronological order; the analyses are thorough and scholarly; and the thoughtful lesson plans are classroom-tested by experienced master teachers. The set is a priceless gift to educators and students alike.

I have never written a review for amazon before, but feel compelled to do so now because this book is so wonderful. It is the best of its genre that I have read (and I read a LOT of parenting books). There are many wonderful suggestions on how to make your children's lives more calm and peaceful. It is perfect for all ages and all religions. The author is also fantastic- I emailed her for an outline for a study group based on the book, and she responded immediately! I always get my books from the library, but I refer to this so frequently (and can see myself doing so for years to come) that I am buying it!

Bringing kindness and calmness back into or children's life's is truly needed in today's highly stressed world.

Two Thumbs Up From The Magazine To Inspire Conscious Parenting & Empowered Kids

Review Date: 2007-04-01
I picked up the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. As publisher of a magazine to inspire conscious parenting and empowered kids, this book reminded me of the importance of helping kids settle down, breath, and connect to the world (and people) around them. It's full practical steps to apply in everyday life but what keeps the pages turning are the personal stories she relates. Some ideas we've heard over and over, such as using breath, movement or touch to soothe, but they serve as great reminders to put them back into our lives. Others are innovative, fun, and simple, such as giving your toddler two nickels to hold on to (one for each hand) to distract them while making a quick stop. Without giving too much away, the book offered a reminder that the way things are isn't necesarily the way they have to be. It IS possible for four 10-year-old boys to be kind, compassionate and gentle with a 4-year-old boy who interrupts their game. Empathy is essential for two humans to connect and understand one another. Empathy is what is lacking within families and in world politics. We started our magazine because we know that it is children who determine the future of the world. With conscious parenting and the ideas presented in this book, our kids have a hope for a more peaceful personal life and world situation.

Jigsaw Jones: Case of Hermie the Missing Hamster is a detective novel featuring a wise-cracking PI who also happens to be in the second grade and have his office in a treehouse.

The most reluctant reader will become a dedicated fan of this book, turning the pages for one laugh after another until the satisfying conclusion.

This is a great book with some cute illustrations and it is most definitely not to be missed! Parents, buy this book for your child, and you will have a reader for life.

I am so excited to find this series. My first grader loves mysteries, and these are well written. They are challenging enough, not intimidating with the print size, and have great pictures. Those are things that will capture his interest in the first place. They really do sound like a kid is talking. I think the thing I like the most is the choice of words that are used to describe coversations. Most of the books written for this age are "said," "asked," and rarely, things like "replied." This author uses much more interesting, descriptive words. I know that sounds trivial, but as an avid reader who hopes my son will continue to love reading as well, it's refreshing to see someone who takes time to pay attention to the choice of words that show how someone is talking, not just what they said.

One of the best books ever!

The series includes The Case of The Runaway Dog, The Case of the Secret Valentine, The Case of The Missing Hamster, The Case of The Christmas Snowman, The Case of the Spooky Sleepover, The case of the Stolen Baseball Cards, The case of the Mummy Mystery, and coming soon, The case of the Great Sled Race. My 10 year old daughter was required to read a non-fiction book and create a project for her 5th grade English class. She is an avid reader of fiction, but was not enthusiastic about reading non-fiction. This marvelous book by Jerry Stanley has changed my daughter and her reluctance in this area. She was moved by the story of these Dust Bowl migrants who came to California to find a better life and their struggle to move forward from adversity. Mr. Stanley's book is excellent. While written for young readers, he does not write down to them. Instead he brings the young reader to his level. The photographs by noted artists bring further dimension to this stellar work. My daughter could not put it down.

this book is an excellent companion to the historical ficiton book "Bud, Not Buddy." By reading aloud sections of Children of the Dustbowl, teachers could build some of the background knowledge that would help children understand how the daily lives of the average person changed as a result of the Great Depression and the 5-year drought in the Midwest.
Given the devastation of Hurriicane Katrina, this book also offers insight on what can happen when large numbers of people must migrate because of weather-related disasters.

As I converted from Islam into Christianity, I have had my own set of issues to deal with. How easy for people to throw in Bible verses right in your face and they think they just "fixed" your pain problem. By leaving Islam, I dealt with rejection as an outcast. I have also had a lot of anger and less trust in people after being betrayed. I have talked to many people of godly counsel, but frankly nobody is like Dan Montgomery. He is not in an ivory tower but he is right down to earth and meets you where you are in a compassionate way showing you how to truly apply the Bible principles in counseling that really"works". I liked a lot what he had to say on feeling God's presence even though when we don't feel like it. I had to read this part in his book over and over again. I even plan to translate to myself in Arabic, my native tongue, and apply it to myself as well as those I evangelize in the Muslim religion. This is "The Lean-Against-the Wall Technique" on pages 115,116,117 and 118. As I have come to explore the American male psyche, this part is the best answer that I can also give in response to the question of why I don't feel like my prayer just hit the wall and I can't feel God. If you read where I have begun all along in my Christian journey and how Dan has helped me, you would really appreciate his book enormously.

This book introduces the reader to the compass model and how to use it to zero in on exactly where a counselee is having problems. The compass theory is easy to understand and to apply in its basic form. Author Dr. Dan Montgomery has developed this technique and shares it with Christian Counselors as an effective counseling tool. Dr. Montgomery is well respected among his peers and has held a license as a Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist for over twenty-five years. He has taught at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Psychology, the United States International University, and the University of New Mexico. His work and techniques are praised by the likes of the Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary.

In the book Dr. Montgomery covers the basics of the Compass system, the anatomy of a counseling session, dealing with the counselee's image of God, and using metaphors and symbolization in therapy. Appendix I provides basic commentary on twenty-five specific techniques that provide quality tools to aid the counselor. In the second appendix he even includes some short True/False self-assessment tests to help map out the counselee's position on the compass.

Written for the Christian Counselor these techniques and the compass model can be used not only by clinicians but also by pastors, chaplains, and others involved in this healing ministry. Christian Counseling that Really Works is highly recommended to everyone involved in counseling in any form.

Excellent Coverage of Cisco IOS Gateways and Gatekeepers

I picked up a copy of "Cisco Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers" to use as a study guide for the Implementing Cisco Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers (642-453 GWGK). This book was enormously helpful in successfully passing the exam. With that said, this is not an official Cisco Press exam study guide, in fact it cover much more, and was also beneficial to me in passing the CCIE Voice written.

As with most Cisco Press books, the opening chapter covers some basics, in this case the basics of Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers, as well as a high level review of gateway protocols and deployment scenarios.

The subsequent chapters jump right into the meat of the material. Each ensuing chapter covers each topic, such as H.323, SIP, MGCP, Dial Plans, and SRST with great depth and clarity. The book if full of very detailed and comprehensive sample configurations and debug outputs. Finally, the examples throughout the book are based off of the same case study network that is introduced in the opening chapter. As I consider sitting for the CCIE Voice Lab, I anticipate that I will revisit this book again and use the case study in my home lab.

I highly recommend this book to any looking to learning more about Cisco IOS Gateways and Gatekeepers, studying for the CCVP, and/or preparing for the CCIE Voice!

Excellent Reference Book on Complex VoIP Networks

Review Date: 2006-12-15
This book is intended for network engineers, IP Telephony engineers, and Telco engineers who are tasked with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of VoIP and IP Telephony networks. This is an intermediate level book and that the reader understands IP networking and at least is familiar with the Cisco courses: CVoice, CIPT, QoS, IPTT. These imply a basic understanding of VoIP and time-division multiplexing (TDM) voice fundamentals, the basic concepts and configuration of basic IP voice routers and Cisco CallManager basics.

This book is not so much an Exam Cram as a more traditional reference book. That is not to say that it doesn't cover the material that will be found on several Cisco certification tests. It gives a firm foundation in the complex VoIP networks that in which Cisco specializes. Obviously this book covers Cisco equipment, but as Cisco is the major manufacturer of such equipment as well as providing for the certification of workers in the field, that's not a bad place to start.

This book has the advantage of a very good writing style by the three authors. This is important as I don't find computer books to be nearly as much fun to read as say a good sci-fi novel.

I work for a large Cisco reseller and purchase many Cisco Press books to augment knowledge base and assist with best-practices. I have to say that this book is one of the best Cisco Press books I've ever purchased and probably the best Cisco Press AVVID book.
I've been searching for a comprehensive source for DSP information and deployment guidelines, and COR theory. This book does an excellent job on explaining both. It is a must for anyone working with or provisioning DSPs.
In other matters, it is well written and talks plainly of other gateway technologies that AVVID engineers run into day-after-day.
If your looking for VoIP books, this is a must for your library.

This is one of the most helpful texts that I have purchased in the past year. It is easy to read and gives lots of examples as well as many points to ponder. HOWEVER, (if it matters to you)- make sure that you do not get the BOOK ALONE version. There is an online component that you need an access code to, which doesn't come with the book unless you buy the other version (I believe it said "with myeducationlab" in the item description). As a matter of fact, it's cheaper that way by about $8.00 believe it or not. I had to buy access separately because I waited too long to return the one that I bought which was book alone. I guess you have to live and learn... I hope someone benefits from my mistake!

"Classroom Management..." is THE book for those who are looking for the proverbial Teacher's Manual. Apart from covering all the basics in a lot of detail, it offers checklists and (so-called) case studies. The downside of this is that the book starts out a bit dry and too straightforward, with instructions so clear-cut you would think they are for operating some sort of machinery. The "case-studies" are examples rather than studies, so the objection here lies with the misnomer. These are clearly minor drawbacks to a great book that only gets better as you read on. With a fabulous Further Reading section after every chapter, and delectable cartoons sprinkled throughout the book, it is an essential text for every teacher's personal library.

This book has achieved suprisingly long-lived popularity among my two kids, who are now ages 6 and 4. They've enjoyed this book on and off for years. While other books will get some attention and then are dropped, this is one they seem to keep coming back to.

Though it's only 10 pages, there's a lot here: shapes, colors, numbers, letter and basic nursery rhymes. The kids love the tactical fun of the lift-a-flap discoveries, and that's a good way for them to learn.

Clifford is a wonderful children's character. Before Clifford was a Big Red Dog, he was a small red puppy. This is a good book for 3-100. It is about a big red dog that went to live with a girl named Emily Elizabeth who raised him and showed Clifford how to have a big heart. I think this book is wonderful for kids while learning to read.

I loved this book when I was 3 years old and I still love it and now I am 12. I just think that it is a fun book to read because it feels like you are with Clifford when he goes on his adventures. My favorite book of the ones that Bridwell has written is definitely Clifford's Schoolhouse. I just love the pictures and the flaps to the book. It comes in hard cover and paperback.

I really hope that my book review helped. I hope that you will buy this book for your child. I promise you they will like it for years to come.

This is a book that pinpoints specific issues in Higher Education and how to handle them properly as an administrator.

Each chapter of this book discusses a particular difficult issue in higher education administration. Examples include specific "hot-shot" faculty asking for unfair favors, the handling of controversial issues between faculty members and students, negotiation for shared resources across departments, and handling adult bullies, etc. Each chapter begins with a mini-case to illustrate the difficult problem involved. Then it discusses the related issues and how to handle every detail. At the end of each chapter, it presents the solution for the mini-case.

Reading this book enhanced my understanding of academic issues from an administrator's point of view. I had always thought that managing a higher education institution was less challenging than managing a Fortune-500 company. On the surface, it seemed that everything would just go by the book. Now I know that, it is far more complex than going by the book, though knowing "the book" is crucial. Being a college administrator has its own set of challenges: managing faculty members who do not want to be managed. Due to the employment structure (with tenured faculty, faculty who can bring in a vast amount of resources: publication and research grants, etc.), it is not entirely a direct command-and-control situation. In addition, since a university environment is quite decentralized, there are a lot of complicated interpersonal power issues among faculty, graduate assistants, and students. According to the author, one leverage administrators should use is the established mission and goals of the university. If someone's behavior or performance is against these established statements, this would be a valid means for handling the issues properly.

I think that, explicitly communicating the mission, goals, policies, and expected proper professional behavior to all new employees and new students in detail and in writing ahead of time is equally important. This way, at least every party would have the proper information before problems happen. In addition, this book also implicitly tells job seekers what to look for when applying for an administrative position in Higher Education. To me, it is well-articulated mission and goals, as well as well-established policies that are fair to all parties.

Overall, this book shows that the author is knowledgeable and familiar with the subject matter. It should be very helpful to higher education administrators or administrators-to-be.

Gunsalus' work is a realistic and credible portrayal of office politics in higher education. Written primarily for the new administrator who comes out of the ranks of the faculty at a university, the guiding principles are useful for anyone in a higher education mangement role. Gunsalus focuses on topics related to interpersonal relationships, legal issues, academic freedom, and related challenges in the academic workplace. This is a useful, relevant resource for the newcomer to college and university administration.

I've attended a number of chair and dean conferences and read the literature, but this is tops for practical and political advice. It has relevant case studies (a la Harvard Business Review) that are derived from real time war stories.

If you're in a difficult situation or need an outside perspective, this book will help you sort it out, and keep you entertained as well.

Just bought several copies to distribute to my former Ph.D. students, now professor themselves, and my current grad students. Experienced administrators will ask "where was this book x years ago?" and everyone else will benefit now and in the future.

Survival Guide deals with the human relations complexities administrators like deans and department heads face in higher education, especially in big public universities like the author's own University of Illinois. Much of its advice can be summed up in (a) be aware that administration is a *role* (actually, a number of them) that must be *played* in an appropriate way, (b) when problems of certain sticky kinds come up, consult with the people at your institution who are paid specifically to worry about those kinds of problems, (c) know and observe the rules governing what you do and be careful to document your actions accordingly - "Process is your friend".

But this dry précis sells the book way short. Its notable strengths include:
* A rich lode of cases taken from the author's own experience and gleanings from years of consulting on other campuses. Anyone who has ever spent time as faculty or staff at a university will find much to interest them here.
* An analysis of the various kinds of problems likely to come up, together with clear guidelines for dealing with them, distilled from her deep experience and reflection.
* A natural and easy delivery that makes the book engaging and easy to read, and a consistently-maintained clarity that makes it easy to understand. I worry just a bit that some academic readers will conclude that any book so easy to understand must not be saying much. (Wrong!)
* A shining authenticity that has to appeal to every person of good will. The book is a potent manual of practical idealism dedicated to "leav[ing] the institution better than you found it".

Here are some extracts from the Introduction:

"One of the most puzzling aspects of higher education is that its front-line leaders are almost always selected for qualities other than an ability to run complex organizations. ...yet...universities are among the most complicated organizations around... For most academics, the people problems are the most difficult aspect of serving in an administrative position... There are conceptual tools and practical skills that can help academic administrators successfully handle personnel problems, and these skills can be both taught and learned... Most serious problems can be prevented, and should be... As teachers and parents know, helping people grow and develop new skills can be among life's most rewarding activities..." (p1-9)

I cannot imagine a better laying out of the ground.

A special strength of the book is its use of the "war story" cases. Each chapter is anchored to a realistic situational problem, and Chapter 6 in particular provides numerous experience-derived illustrations.

The author's hand on the elephant is that of an attorney, and that fact shows up in the frequent references to lawsuits and litigation. This feels oppressive, but since a lawsuit can be as bad as a fire, it is no doubt justified. The problem is not with the book but with our situation in society, and the informed cautions the book provides may be among its more valuable contributions.

In the Bullies chapter {as elsewhere) the author displays gentle persistence in bucking up the reader's resolution in the face of the challenging problems she presents. It is so tempting to "pass by on the other side" so long as one can get away with it! "If not you, who?" says it just right, reassuring the reader that administrator effectiveness is both possible and indispensable. The author's lays out in a natural but compelling way the destructive longterm effects of inaction.

A basic thing I treasure about this book is the thoroughgoing way it does NOT imply a title like, Administration - Your Gateway to Prestige and Power. Instead, it shows how there is satisfaction to be found in enabling the higher education organism to function in a healthy way, that the role is worthy of a reader's dedication to it, and that chances are s/he will be able to rise to the occasion. The view is sometimes heard in academia that administration is intrinsically despicable or at best a distraction from more important things. One of the reasons I think it would be good if this book were read by everybody in higher education is that it provides a powerful corrective to that corrosive prejudice.

Does the book have defects? Sure. I disagreed in a couple cases with the author's suggested resolution of illustrative problems situations. There is one(!) short passage that I found clumsy and obscure, one where a problem situation seemed improbable, one where I understood her advice but could not see how it would be executed. But these are all tiny warts, not consequential enough to discuss further.

A possible deficiency is the lack of examination of the question of a candidate's talent for administrative work. (The text proper begins (p11), "When you take on an administrative role...") It would be helpful if, say, an appendix could discuss the traits and predispositions that augur well or badly for a prospective administrator. This could help both selection committee and candidate, but especially a candidate. "Am I equipped to ride this horse? Do I want to?"

Facts are facts, and the author everywhere states them, whatever they are, in an almost startlingly unaffected way. "Wise as serpents, innocent as doves" is a phrase that comes to mind. She frequently references her guidelines back to the common wisdom lore of our culture. This is not the way academics, always striving to establish originality, usually behave. Her own contribution is the outstanding conception, organization, and presentation of the material. The delivery is so clear and natural that it would be easy for a reader to take much of the message for granted.

Chapter 8 is a wonderful close to a wonderful book. The discussion of the need to display a range of different personas, often to the same people over fairly short spans of time, I found especially strong and useful. These are things that a few gifted people might "know" by instinct, but that more ordinary persons might go through a whole career without entirely figuring out.

Finally, I love the concluding paragraph. It epitomizes the attitude of unaffected practical idealism that is so evident throughout the book, ending, "...step back every now and then to relish the excitement and the small victories."

Surely every newbie administrator should have this book. My own view is that it should be read by every academic, administrator or not. All would profit by an understanding of the crucial role of administration, its demands, and its rewards. If everyone involved understood how administration really *should* be done, maybe it would get done that way more than it currently does.
