I am using your textbook for a class I teach for the Oklahoma City/County Health Department. I Love It! The class I teach is the Food Service Operator's Certification Course that is required by all food service operators in this county. I am a Registered Dietitian who is contracted by Oklahoma State University-OKC and Francis Tuttle to teach the class for the health department. It is kind of a community service offered by the two schools. I have only been teaching the class for three years now, and by far your book is the best.

Your book has made my job so easy and so much fun! Some of my students are returning to do the re-certification class and bringing managers in who have not taken the class in 20 years. In the past, they have just challenged the test every three years, because they thought the class was too boring. (and they knew it all).
I would highly recommend this book to educators in the nutrition field. I think all nutrition majors need to know this important information. I also recommend it for a reference for my food service managers in my nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

As an instructor who teaches Food Safety classes to front-line employees, I find this text an excellent resource. It is comprehensive yet still easy-to-understand, a difficult combination to achieve for some of the technical aspects of foodborne illness, pathogens, etc. The cartoon-style drawings add to the enjoyment. I have had many trainees who share these positive comments. Only negative comment would be to include color photos instead of the old, grainy B&W.

Also recommended for the Food Safety Trainer: "Keyword Index: 1999 FDA Model Food Code"

Essentials of Food Safety & Sanitation is a comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide to help food workers produce safe food. In my job as editor of a food safety-oriented newsletter, I review and have access to a lot of training materials, but "Essentials" is the one I refer to the most for current, reliable information.

I wanted to make your users aware of the fact that a Study Guide has been developed to accompany Essentials of Food Safety and Sanitation. There are a growing number of states in America that require retail food managers in their state to be certified in food safety. In many instances, certification is based on the ability to pass a nationally recognized food protection manager certification examination. Many people who are seeking certification desire to have some training in food safety before sitting for the certification exam. However, these people do not always live in areas where such training is readily available. This is why the authors of Essentials of Food Safety and Sanitation developed the Study Guide to accompany the book. The Study Guide is published by Prentice Hall, and its ISBN is 0-13-532144-1.

Great examples of real applications. His method of transference is one of ease, if you pay attention! Before finishing it, I was using several tidbits that had been doging me at work...

My boss sent me home early on a Friday with the instructions to take the wife out to dinner on him! Is this book worth it? What do you think?

An excellent, practical book

I recommend this book highly.

The Excel spreadsheet software includes many capabilities most people do not think about when they use Excel for general business purposes. In this useful book, the author presents 16 complete examples from day-to-day electronics. Those examples include a voltage-to-current converter, a mean-time-between-failures (MTBF) calculator, a resistor color-code decoder using voice input, a voltage-regulator circuit calculator, and others. Instead of simply presenting and describing the examples, the author steps readers through the creation of the needed spreadsheets, formulas, graphs, formats, and other portions of the project.

The examples are not static. In the MTBF example, you will have an opportunity to create "scenarios" that let you try combinations of variables to determine what happens under "what if" conditions. The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains all the examples as well as an eBook version of the book. As you learn by doing, you'll gain experience using Excel so you can better apply it to your own engineering problems.

(Disclosure: I write for several magazines owned by Reed Elsevier, the parent company of the Newnes series of books. I do not work with the book-publishing group, however.)

This is a book you keep around because you forget all the tricks you pick up. I have a copy of the book and have used it a few times. Very handy in those situations where you need to use excel because everyone else is - its good that its for electrical engineers. Its good that it has those things that no one will teach you how to use.

This is book provide practical examples which are useful and helpful to me in my analogue design work, e.g. the variation of anlaogue reference voltages. Besides, this book also covers some digital applications. The book is easy to read and the spreadsheets are available in the enclosed CD ROM and we can use it as a reference, this saves me much time to regenerate the spreadsheet.

I appreciate a good horse as much as the next guy. Looking at horses through Keith's eyes makes me love them. I'm not going to run out and buy tight pants and a helmet because of this book, but you get the idea. The images are well made and seen. Not all of the pictures have the tilt-shift look which has been overdone so that's good. The layout is great. A square book for a square image. Keith's little ditty about Ezekiel's Horse is a warm piece of writing. If you're a Keith Carter fan, buy the book. If you like horses, buy the book. If your interested in photography, buy the book. If your name is Mr. Ed, look for your portrait on page 29, then call your lawyer.

But still, it is very good and there isn't one week that goes by that I don't reference it for one reason or another. I especially like that it offers origins of some textile words which is always interesting and helpful to know.

"From Concept to Consumer" is the first book I recommend to people who are truly interested in the business of fashion. Even though the book is a textbook it is an easy and fast read. One of the best features of this book is the sequential order format. The author takes you step by step through the development of the fashion process BEFORE a single garment is made by briefly describing fashion forcasting, research, color, fabric and trend analysis. The next process explains how raw materials for fabrics are chosen, processed and produced into textiles. Learn about the marketing of these textiles on the international market and to major apparel manufacturers. All of this takes place before the designer even starts to design a collection! Take a look inside the channels of garment distribution and on to us the consumer. This book provides a realistic insiders view in to the industry which is often glamorized by high profile designers and media spokespeople. Folks the business of fashion is a solid industry just like any other and in my opinion even more interesting than all the fluff and the sizzle.

The RCA CED VideoDisc system is barely mentioned in this book, but it does provide a comprehensive history of video tape formats, with an emphasis on how RCA and other American manufacturers let VCR production slip through their fingers. Besides covering the Betamax and VHS tape formats, the book also deals with other obscure tape formats like CV-2000, U-matic, EVR, InstaVision, Cartrivision, AutoVision, V-Cord, HoloTape, and MagTape. The last several chapters of the book deal extensively with the landmark Universal vs. Sony lawsuit.

This is a great book for those who think that Japanese firms somehow misbehaved in overtaking the U.S. electronics industry. It is also one book that the founders of Apple should have read. By keeping it for itelf, Sony seems to have insured the demise of the superior beta format!

This book is so relevant to the time we live in now its silly. All the IP issues that are argued ad nauseum about ... and its ilk have all been hashed out 20 years ago. Even some of the players were the same, such as our old friend Jack Valenti and Sony (who were on the other side at the time!) The IP parts are great, but the history of the BETA vs VHS battles are also very illuminating and the stories about the Sony engineers and early failed attempts at VCRs are fascinating.

It happens all the time. Here we go again. Pick a winner and win a prize. Here is a wonderful history book about new media, and the string of failures including CBS's EVR, RCA's Holotape and MagTape, Sony's U-Matic (it was intended to be a consumer device, but was an accidental hit in the professional market, not unlike IBM's PC) and Betamax, Discovision, Cartrivision, V-Cord, and the ultimate winner, JVC's Video Home System. It explains why the Japanese decided to fight it out in the marketplace with competing 1/2" tape systems, and has lots of coverage of the Betamax Case, which has important implications not only in Freedom of Speech and Copyright Law, but in the politics of Muchomedia. Many of the questions we struggle with in Modern Muchomedia tripped up these guys a decade earlier.

The Truth About Che's Last Struggle
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-09
In this firsthand account, Bolivian tin miner and revolutionary militant Rodolfo Saldan~a explains how the
guerilla lead by Che Guevara - which Saldan~a helped lead the support network for --was rooted in the
revolutionary upsurge of workers' , students' and farmers' struggles in the mid-late '60s in Bolivia and the
mass movements against dictatorship and Yanqui Imperial domination in the neighboring countries of Peru
and Argentina . As he explains from first-hand experience, Che's efforts were not isolated, driven by
desire for martyrdom, or sabotaged by Fidel Castro, as so many of Che's ' biographers' have claimed.
Excellent preface and introduction by Cuban General Harry Villegas and Pathfinder Press' Mary-Alice
Waters place the lessons of Che's final efforts in the context of the struggles of workers, farmers and youth
of today against capitalism and the Yanqui Empire.

Did the capture and execution of Che Guevarra prove that the military actions he led in Bolivia in 1966-67 were doomed to failure?

This interview with Bolivian participant Rodolfo Saldaña reveals the opposite. His captivating description of how fertile the ground was in Bolivia and throughout South America for revolution includes the mass support and financial aid given to the guerrillas by tin miners, peasants, and students. He explains how the U.S. backed the military junta, and the real reasons for the defeat.

Saldana's fits Che Guevara guerrilla struggle in Bolivia oin 1966 and 1967 into the context of workers struggles that had been shaking that country since the 1940s. He shows how Bolivian revolutionists, workers, students, and peasants welcomed Che's struggle and how the class struggle in that country advanced by Che's struggle. At the country's biggest tin mines, entire unions pledged one day's salary to support Che. Saldana, a founder and leader of the Bolivian Communist Party until he broke with them to work with Che's guerrilla, shows how the Bolivian CP sabotaged Che's struggle. With economic and social conditions in Bolivia and other parts of Latin America much worse than they were in the 1960s, this book should be read as a manual for future upsurges of struggle by workers and peasants in Bolivia and throughout the Americas.

Kudos to the Pathfinder editors for finding Saldaña and recording his story before he died. Saldaña describes the day-to-day life of revolutionary organizers among workers and peasants in Bolivia in the early 1960s. The book gave me a deeper appreciation for the revolutionary possibilities that existed in Bolivia, which in turn led to Che opening the guerrilla front there in 1966.

The book is very well done with lots of pictures and information. A true tribute to our unsung Giants of the Past. Most stand in fields or yards, unnoticed, broken down and/or grown over...showing both signs of age and of neglect. Yet, with a little TLC they could once again be productive... capable of producing a mesmerizing effect on the soul or energy if needed. They actually serve a multitude of purposes if only people would take the time to care for them, they would give plenty back in return. They are our only remaining Giants of the Past and they deserve our respect and acknowledgement. This book does just that and, hopefully, it will make its readers take notice of these great Giants and their needs and many uses. They were meant to serve us and would once again if only we'd let them.

Baker has painstakingly researched the histories of dozens of American windmill manufacturers, photographed surviving examples of each, and finally provided a silhouette drawing of each model to aid the 'windmill spotter' in identifying them. This book is a must for anyone interested in American history, rural heritage, or who just likes windmills.

Every Color User's Essential Book!

Review Date: 2007-03-01
In the age of digital cameras, printouts and projectors, almost everyone needs some introduction to color and color reproduction.

If you are a professional working in color reproduction, there are plenty of books on color engineering and computational color science - those by Phil Green et al, Stephen Westland, William Hunt are all good examples. But Maureen Stone's book has filled a long felt gap at a different level, where you need to understand the fundamentals thoroughly to get the best out of your everyday color reproduction equiptment - your computer monitor, color printer, your digital camera - what have you.

Three features of the book make it stand out: first, the selection of topics within its twelve chapters, second, the accuracy of the technical inforamation, and third the writing style. In fact, I am not sure if there is another book in the market on digital color at this level!

Ms Stone has selected just the right topics for providing a grounding in the issues of color reproduction. Her treatment of the Color Management Systems is probably one of the best at this level that I am familiar with. Color theory is complex. It is a hard-core science from one angle, an art from another angle, and an engineering discipline from yet another. The book has done a good job of summarizing the results precisely and explaining them accurately in a manner that almost anyone with interest in colors can understand.

The free-flowing writing style makes it easy to read - I finished reading through the book in about a week! And, now I keep going back to it off and on, just to confrim (or re-learn) my fundamentals.

The references and annotations to references are very useful.

This is the first book on colors for every computer user, digital camera user, color printer user and for graphics engineers.

"A Field Guide to Digital Color" is an excellent introduction and reference for those who need to know more about color that "it exists" but who do not live and breathe GretagMacbeth color charts.

This book is wonderful for photographers of all levels who own Photoshop or a similar image editing program and are serious about editing their photos and getting things "just right". For amateurs, it serves as an excellent guide for gaining understanding of the key concepts related to how the eye sees color, color mixing systems (additive and subtractive), color matching, perceptive effects that humans eyes have when colors are placed near each other, scanning images, color spaces, printing images, matching color spaces.

Although the book is by no means the answer to specific questions you might have about your situation, it provides references for all of the materials used and you can research a particular subject you need to gain further knowledge of quite easily. It will also help you to develop the terminology necessary to ask the right questions of an expert.

I am an advanced photographer and work with computer graphics (OpenGL) and found this book to be very useful for providing an overview of the entire chain of color from seeing it with our eyes, capturing images, manipulating them on a computer, and then outputting them for our eyes again with a printer, monitor, or other output device.
