This time, I bought a book about mineral nutrition of plants for one of my classes.
The book is in excellent conditions, and it arrived in time.
No regret!

Not Just for Plant Science

Excellent text for nutritionists, as well. I was looking for a text to help me better understand the nutrient mechanisms of plants. I wanted to better help my clients understand where nutrients lie within plants and what their role is in the growth and development of plant structure. Not the usual course, but the book greatly helped in this goal.

The text enabled me to bridge the gap between holistic nutrition and plant science. It provided me with another way to explain nutrient affinity in the human body by explaining plant development.

A "must have" reference text for the serious student.

This text is essential for the upcoming plant scientist and should be in the book case of every graduate student involved in the study of plant nutrition. Marshner provides the in-depth look into the mineral nutrition of plants that serious students have been looking for. Topics are supported by an endless array of citations and the book is an excellent source of information for those writing literature reviews and journal articles. Marshners depth of understanding on the subject will amaze you! Recommended for graduate level students, or serious undergraduates. The depth may prove to be frustrating for the beginner.

This is, by far, the best textbook on plant nutrition written in the past 15 years. I use it as the textbook in my graduate level course in Plant Nutrition at Utah State University. I hope we can convince the publisher to reprint it.

This book may appear somewhat dated, since with its early 90's publication it was written before personal computers had made quite the inroads into taking the pain and frustration out (a lot of it at least) of learning Morse code. It is a solid survey of the code, its origin, history, uses, and how to learn it. Cupled with a shareware CW trainer (such as Morse Academy, SuperMorse, NuMorse, for PC, or MorseTrainer for Mac) it is all you really need to get conversant in code. A good starting point, and a bargain at the price.

Vittore Cossalter has created an excellent launch platform for any detailed work in the area of motorcycle dynamics. I found this particularly useful from an engineer's perspective, however the language used is succinct enough for any attentive reader to obtain a well rounded understanding of the dynamics of the Motorcycle.

A great technical book for the engineer, student, or technically/mathematically inclined motorcycle enthusiast.
Motorcycle Dynamics offers a wealth of information compiled from the most up-to-date research into the behavior and performance of motorcycles. The structure of the book and abundant graphs assist in understanding an exceptionally complicated subject. This book offers a refreshingly analytical approach to a field that has in the past been distorted by tongue-in cheek answers and hunches of weekend warriors. Rest assured on learning something new on every read-through. Not an "easy read" due to the complex content however I consider Motorcycle Dynamics an unsurpassed source detailing a rigorous approach to the dynamic behavior of motorcycles.

I already had the first edition of the book and i wanted to have also the second one. But the book, that was already excellent in the first edition, now is even better. Translation has been improved and sections have been added to the vibration analysis and to the tyre modelling up-to-dating them. The book covers all the aspects of motorcycle dynamics. Formulas are well described even when difficult. Of course the book requires a strong knowledge of math and physic, but also "not-in-the-field" people can easily understand what is behind and applies formulas to perform hand calculation.

Great book!

It's a scientific - technical book, which covers the vehicle dynamics (and kinematics) with an impressive detail level.
I could not find any comparable. The only topic marginally treated is the influence of structural properties on the vehicle dynamics.
The book is well organized and a large number of graphs and figures make the understanding easy. However, you can not appreciate the contents without a technical background.
I strongly recommend the book to anybody involved in motorcycle design and research. For its excellent didactic quality, It can be considered a written motorcycle dynamics course.

Needs time and commitment but it is all there and readable !

I am a professional Physicist so some of my remarks may be clouded by the fact that in principle at least all the related calculations are familiar to me.

I find the book by Vittore Cossalter as the ONLY serious and complete reference for the dynamics / kinematics of Motorcycles I have come across. The exposition is very readable and well presented and it has helped me sort out a lot of related issues that I have played around with through own calculations and computer simulations.
I would not recommend the book to people that hate maths as it is full of them (it is a technical book after all as it should be to cover the subject properly) but for anyone whose interests and capabilities go into the realm of motorcycle dynamics I consider it a must have.

I was especially interested in the tyre behaviour analysis (since this was the topic I was most unfamiliar with) but I would rate the whole of the book as top notch.

In a nutshell: If you like that kind of stuff, get it.

Ruth Orenstein has made an important contribution to the practice of organizational consulting in her book, "Multidimensional Executive Coaching." MEC presents a theory-guided approach in which readers are shown clear examples as to how this technique works. Orenstein incorporates a psychodynamic perspective whereby the thoughts and feelings of a coach are considered "data" to be included in understanding a client. As readers are taken through the steps involved in coaching a client, the author addresses real-world, practical implications. Ultimately, this is a book for practitioners. One need not understand the theoretical underpinnings across varying schools of thought in order to understand and improve upon the coaching process. Orenstein has done the work for us; she is a coach for coaches. -- A. F. Simon, Ph.D., Psy.D.

Dr. Orenstein has created a uniquely "multidimensional" approach to executive coaching. While most of the literature in this field is devoid of theory, the author has raised the bar in developing not only a conceptual framework but a clear and immensely usable methodology. Her case descriptions are insightful, sensitive and at the same time instructive. This book is essential reading for anyone new to the field as well as the seasoned professional.

Dr. Orenstein's work appears to be a relevant and useful contribution to the growing literature in the field of Executive Coaching. It provides a nice balance of concepts and illustrative practice. There were times I became so immersed in the writing that I felt I was right there with her as she described a difficult situation with a coaching client.

This book does exactly what it purports to do. It provides the framework, from the initial interview through termination, for successful executive coaching. In addition, it provides clear standards for judging that success. The approach is unique in that it is individual--both to the people involved and the corporations within which they work. This approach requires substantial professional knowledge and (perhaps most importantly) intense self knowledge on the part of the coach. It is absolutely refreshing to read a very well written book on this topic which doesn't ignore the fact that real human beings with real strengths and weaknesses are those who need coaching.

This is a great book for students or engineers who are new to multigrid, not for readers who need more detailed and deep discussion of the method.

Mathematicians who write well are a rare commodity. Briggs is one of them. He has the ability to break down complex numerics with understandable prose making concepts accessible to non-specialists. He operates under the rare assumption that his readers weren't born knowing this stuff. This multigrid primer written with Henson and McCormick is no exception. Expository discussions are lucid, compact and informative; examples and plots are helpful and well selected; and pseudo code is well documented with corresponding outputs to verify understanding. If you are embarking on Multigrid from scratch this short (if somewhat pricy) primer is worth the time and money.

Anyone with some background in applied mathmatics should find this book accessible. It is well laid-out and focuses on algorithms as opposed to mathematical proofs. It is ideal for someone interested in multigrid methods but who doesn't want to get lost in lots of mathematical theory. It doesn't cover cell centered methods, which is somewhat limiting, but other than that it was useful and informative.

Among the few books on filter bank and wavelets which I read and then gave up, this is by far the best, albeit the oldest, one. It gets right into all theoretic details about filter banks in such elegant words and mathematics that often pursuade me to read further just for the fun of it. Even its chapters about quantization and compression provide deeper insights than most other books that undertake singal compression as their only task.

A wonderful book

Multirate systems and filter banks for engineers
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-17
You'll get in this book a complete treatment of the theory
of multirate systems and filter banks. The practical side
is not the focus. The large number of examples and figures
make it easy to follow (reading it from cover to cover is
not that difficult). The intuition beyond the theory is well
developed, at the expense of a light mathematical treatment.
The geometrical and algebraic view provided by Vaidyanathan
is unique and probably deserves to be taught in any DSP course
for engineers, even at the introductory level. Signal processing
people however could find its style too intuitive but engineers
should like it as a reference book in these topics.

Multirate and Filter Banks from an engineer's perspective
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-11
Vaidyanathan's book is a very concise, yet enjoyable book on multirate systems and filter banks. Multirate systems and Filter banks represent some of the state-of-the-art research even today, and I'm a strong proponent of introducing the basic concepts as early as possible, even in the first DSP course.

Vaidyanathan is an engineer first, mathematician second. Note the difference between his approach and Mallat's approach, for example. He relies more on intuition albeit sometimes lacking purpose, which makes this book more readable for the engineers but hard to read cover to cover. This makes this book a very handy reference if you need to pick certain topics up in a hurry.

He also has a very nice, but very concise, review of basic DSP concepts and introduction of basic multirate system properties. However, the speed at which he covers this can be discouraging to some.

Some people would argue that his writing can be hard to read, and this is true sometimes. But his geometric interpretation of lattices and filter banks is more than worth the price of admission.

Nonetheless, I would still recommend this book to engineers interested in either learning about multirate systems and filter banks, or for a reference book.

serious system testing has never been part of the culture here. One day the manager decided that it would be a good thing if we did proper, coordinated, effective stress and load testing. I got stuck with coming up with strategy. I started reading this book expecting a how to guide. I expected to be spoon fed all the nittt gritty details on how to do it. This is not what I got.

This book points you in the right direction, show you the tools you could use, explains what you need to think about and the questions you need to ask. The how-to and the answers to the questions are more for you to figure out yourslef.

At the end of it you come away with a better understanding of what you need to do, why you need to do, high level how you are going to do it and the value you and your company are going to gain by doing all of this.

I would strongly recommend it to anyone having to get involved in system analysis and performance. It gives you a great broader picture of the whole issue. You think you know what you have got yourself involved in. this book shows you that you appreciate only the tip of the iceberg.

The ultimate reference for performance testing (certainly testing, more so than actual tuning, though the latter is covered well in the last few chapters). The author's approach is complete in that it addresses how to test along with what, when, to what degree, and with what kind of staffing resources. I'm already thinking of ways we can improve our own change control processes, and based on tools and methods covered by the author I'm convinced I can do so cheaper and with less impact to my users than I previously thought possible. Case in point, look into the two chapters on tools for testing and monitoring: in this alone, the book will pay for itself in short order.

With technological advances being made every day, businesses are saving time and money and responding more quickly than ever to changing customer needs. But have these application breakthroughs contributed to more gratifying, harmonious workplaces? National surveys of employee satisfaction suggest otherwise, so what's a manager to do? Get naked, according to Eileen Dowse in "The Naked Manager". Dowse, a motivational speaker, mediator and educator with more than 20 years of business experience, has found in working with clients a common missing thread: authenticity and integrity. Rather than being honest with employees, sharing core values and exposing vulnerabilities, managers and companies clothe themselves in protective layers. Their workplace personas become so far removed from their true selves that workplace cohesion unravels. Being naked means being authentic and dealing with issues at the core level. Through a series of exercises and diagrams reinforced by the collective wisdom of Dowse's clients, Dowse guides the reader through the process of getting naked. Removing these layers is the key to transforming today's business environments. "The Naked Manager" is a true find for today's manager; an eminently readable, digestible book with practical and applicable insights gleaned from real life experiences. Yes, Dowse acknowledges, getting naked takes courage and isn't for the faint of heart. But for those managers and companies committed to creating the most successful and satisfying workplaces, it's essential. As Dowse explains, naked managers expose their core values and inner thinking in a way that lets others know what they stand for, believe in and give credence to. This will produce more gratifying workplaces and business relationships. She asserts that five skills--keeping an open mind, understanding another person's perspective, staying motivated, letting people know you exist, and being proud of who you are--hold the greatest value for managers in the current workplace. The book's insights are reinforced at the end of each chapter in a section featuring thoughts and solutions shared by business leaders around the world. If you are looking for a management book which has information that can help you at work and home, puts a smile on your face and makes you think, then The Naked Manager is worth your time. Like the One Minute Manager and Zap, The Naked Manager is written in an easy style and uses language that lets the reader focus on the message.

The book is written from a woman's perspective, with an Erma Bombeck like flare. The anecdotes and analogies made me laugh, think and at times, raised an eyebrow, all good things from my point of view. The Naked Manager also provided an unexpected bonus. Besides gaining insights into working more effectively with others, I also gained some new insights on a woman's view of the world.

The author deals very well with two topics that most management writers ignore - intuition and spirituality in the workplace. This was refreshing, informative and clearly added value to the book. The chapter "Big Buts" helped me understand and respect the power of that three letter word - but.

I recommend it - Jim V.
