Fairly comprehensive. I felt that more information regarding the current value of some of these sleds would have been helpful, though.

It sounds like a great resource for collectors. And I miss my Flexible Flyer (40+ yrs). If they're so great (and they were), why wouldn't they (the new owners) continue making them? They are is still demand. They were and are tremendously superior to the cheap (and expensive) plastic garbage (i.e. sleds) that are now available. The plastic "sleds" slide all over the place and offer little or no control (steering) on hard pack surfaces. Are these in the book? I hope not.

I don't suppose this is the correct site to be in, but I don't know where else to go. I have a 41-42 (year) sled (60") and I refinished it recently. I do not have the logo any longer, and was wondering how I could go about finding one so I could put it on the sled.

Very comprehensive and informative, as well as fun to read

Joan certainly knows her stuff when it comes to sleds and 'sledorabilia'. As a collector, I find it an invaluable resource for dating items and the values she has established are a good 'ballpark' for bargaining over prices. Best source I've encountered for Flexible Flyer information.

An unequalled compilation of sleds and their history.

As a kid, I loved to slide down the hills on my sled. At that time, my trusty, steerable sled provided the biggest thrills of my life. Now everyone can evoke those nostalgic moments by reading this exceptionally well researched and documented book on sleds in general, and Flexible Flyers in particular. The photographs are clear and colorful, and the stories relating the rise and fall of the sled manufacturers are quite interesting. It makes a useful reference book for collectors and I think it would make a fine addition to their library.

I bought this book about a week ago and I'm very excited of having it, but it's hard for me to read this book at my current level. After briefly going through the pages, I think this book will be very helpfull to me in a year, or so.. If you're an undegraduate student and taking your 1st or 2nd course in "Fluid Dynamics", a better choice for you would be "Fundamentals of AERODYNAMICS" by Anderson - it will help you to start in "Fluids" easier than with this text, and it's more "student-oriented". However, if you're a graduate student (and by "graduate" I mean "just about to graduate" - don't wait - it seems to be a very serious text.

The books infuence and interminate info is one thing to aspire, but the person himself is one of unique interest. His very knowledge will keep you jumping out of your seat in full attentiveness of his every word uttered. He also is not limited to only one field but has aquired knowledge and skills of a variety of interests. As a person he is a very loving, caring, and humble indivisual who thinks of everyone but himself. With all of these qualities, creates an inspirational writer, whose work is revered by many. This book is a very comprehensive one. It treats Incompressible flows, laminar and turbulent ones. It will guide you through the derivation of NS equation, boundary layer equation, and it will give you an introduction to turbulence. The book is complete in the sense that it deeply describes every aspect of the subject, but it does it ONLY from the MATHEMATHICAL point of view. No physics, no pictures (almost). It isn't ABSOLUTELY an introductory book: the level of mathematics is pretty high.

One of the best on the market

This is a fantastic fluid dynamics book! It is clearly written and easy to follow. The chapter exercises are very useful. Chapters include kinematics of fluid motion, conservation laws and kinematics of flows, Navier-Stokes equations, inviscid flows, laminar viscous flow, and turbulent flow. (The chapter on turbulent flow is excellent, balancing the right amount of theory and modeling.)

The book also includes chapters on important mathematical concepts such as base vectors and representations, Gauss, Green, and Stokes theorems, geometry of space and plane curves, coordinate transformations, potential theory, singularities of the first order ODEs, geometry of surfaces, finite difference applied to PDSs, and frame invariancy.

This is an excellent book that would be an excellent choice for advanced-undergraduate and graduate study.

Completed by Curtis Peebles after the death of Milt Thompson the story of Flying without Wings is told by a pilots pilot. Milt has the uncanny ability to mix the technical engineering side of experimental aviation and then put the reader in the pilots seat for a hair-raising ride from 40,000ft down to the ground.

A well written book by a great pilot.

Milt thompson has written a great book on the hardships of the early attempts at flying with out wings. He describes in detail how the M2F1 was designed and tested and how the program eneded with the futuristic X-24B. A great book and a must read for aviation buffs of all ages.

Enjoyable, hands-on overview of high risk testing.

Review Date: 1999-08-04
Lifting body research may be an esoteric subject, but is fascinating for anyone interested in aeronautics; Thompson was in the cockpit during most of the testing of the early forms, and draws an exciting picture of the high risk drama of these pioneering flights. The final chapters link the early research in the 60s with the later design and construction of the Shuttle, and the reader will understand how these "mad monk" test pilots really made the orbiter possible, by proving the validity of the core design. Finally, one interesting note is how the early testing was done with minimal funding, and a lot of do-it-yourself common sense by the teams at Edwards. Those days are certainly gone. Highly recommended if you have an interest in the field, and at least a basic understanding of the terms, concepts, and physics of flight.

A great account of an aeronautical research effort

Review Date: 1999-08-21
The late Milt Thompson, one of the top NASA research test pilots during the glory days of flight testing at Edwards, kept an extensive diary of notes during his years of work. The book digests these notes and presents them in a very readable format that truly captures the imagination of the reader, describing a time of grassroots research and the determination of individuals at Edwards. Thompson, the pilot, and other great engineering minds, notably, Dale Reed, truly believed that there was a better way to bring spacecraft back to earth that didn't involve splashing down somewhere in a large ocean. Their efforts resulted in the construction and testing of the Lifting Bodies, giving us a body of knowledge that led to the Space Shuttle concept and will continue with NASA's newest efforts...the X-38 and Venture Star single stage to orbit concepts. The book is a must for anyone with an interest in this field of aeronautical history.

Well done survey of Gehry's work by Gehry himself, as such, the text is highly informative and the images show his work in its best light. Gehry is without question one of the most influential architects working today, and though I would not necessarily call me a worshiper of his work, im more of a richard meier, santiago calatrava kinda guy, I do respect his awesome talent and his contributions to the field of architecture. If you have any interest at all in Gehry or architecture in general, then I highly recommend you added this to you library.

I just want to begin this review by saying that this book is a need for any architect's library. The book Frank Gehry, Architect, provides a wealth of knowledge about the architect as well as the structures that he has created over time. Most pages in this book (and there are many) contain full color pictures, sketches, or descriptions about the structure and the architect. This book spans from Gehry's earliest projects to project underdevelopment. Projects range from structures to furniture, and even to art (sculpture like stuff). An aspect that I like most about this book is seeing Gehry develop his ideas and hone his craft. I should also add that this book also contains several models that were created for structures. I think this is essential because it allows beginning architects a chance to see effective model building techniques as well as different ways to convey a feeling which is essential for effective communication with a client. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for all architects and students.

Hundreds of pictures and three view drawings. Full color illustrations in the back. It is a bit pricey. Is it worth it? If you are a hardcore fan of French WW1 aircraft...yes.

This is truly an honest and inspiring testimony of amother's experience with prenatal diagnosis and termination. Itchallenges the notion that God would never guide a woman to choosetermination when a genetic anomaly is prenatally diagnosed. Mrs. Lyon is open about how she struggled with guilt and depression, but has now found a healthy way to cope with her pain. It should be read by any Christian person put in this position who is struggling with a life-changing decision.

This is XXL book not only in its size and weight, but mostly for the contents. I wish I had similar on other air services of Great War. No doubt is worth the money paid...because it accumulates huge amount of systematic information which helps in orientation among sometimes confusing mess of names and abbreviations of French air service. All planes (even prototypes and concepts) have at last one photograph. For example Nieuports are covered on 70 large pages, SPADs on 50 - monographs of its own. Taking in account the difficulties caused by destroying many of original sources it must take years for the team to produce it.

Bringing the Real World to the Student Artist

Review Date: 2005-03-23
People don't think alike. The person who can handle the programming complexity of doing a graphics engine is often not the person who is capable of designing the characters, scenery, and equipment needed for the rest of the game. In this area, the digital artist comes into his/her own. Note this says digital artist. This requires two separate skills, one is the ability to create vizualize what art is needed, the other is to use a computer rather than some other media to generate the desired image.

The game design business represents an opportunity for the digital artist to obtain jobs with real companies that are relatively well paying. This book gives an artist's perspective into the game industry. It talks about the industry, the work, and gives insight on how to get a job. But mostly it talks about what kind of art is needed for gaming. It shows the detail that is necessary to produce a visually pleasing game.

The CD included with the book includes numerous illustrations and files from Maya and ds max. It also includes a trial version of Rt/Shader software. The book presumes that you have a workingknowledge of at least one major 3D program (3ds max or Maya) and Photoshop.

This is a splendid book that is positioned to take an aspiring digital artist and carry him to the next level -- employment doing a job well beyond flipping burgers.

I was an art director in the video game industry for a number of years and one of the most frustrating aspects was interviewing artists that wanted to be part of the industry but did not know how to prepare themselves. This book addresses that problem in a thoughtful and comprehensive way.

For any aspiring artist that wants to be in the video game industry, this is the book. The examples and explanations are clear and easy to follow. Using this book, you would be able to prepare a very capable portfolio.

Buy it, read it, and put the knowledge to use.

Review Date: 2004-01-17
I have acquired the fifth edition of Gas Turbine Theory by Professor Saravanamuttoo to add to the previous four editions in my library. Like the previous four editions, I have found the latest edition to be the best book ever written on Gas Turbine Theory and Design.
I have noticed many improvements throughout the new edition with updated information on both Industrial and Aero Gas Turbine applications. In fact, it is the only textbook that covers both types of Gas Turbines with great clarity and depth for students ande practising engineers.
In particular, it has more illustrations with pictures and reference to actual Gas Turbine plant performance and design features as compared to the previous editions which makes it most relevant to real world applications.
As a practising engineer(O&M) in a Gas Turbine Generating Plant(630MW), I have found the inclusion of Performance Monitoring and Degradation to be most welcome given my special interest in this area.
I used the second edition as a student at University and the latest edition as my preferred and favourite textbook for the Gas Turbine part of a course that I teach in Thermal Power to final year students reading for the BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of the West Indies.
After comparing it to all other textbooks in this area, I consider it to be the most outstanding and excellent coverage of Gas Turbine Theory and Design for both students and practising engineers. It is extremely comprehensive with geat emphasis on details and contains the depth to provide the reader with a thorough knowledge of the subject matter.
It is my opinion that this book culminating in its 50th year of existence since the birth of the Gas Turbine engine would become a collectors item worth much more than was paid for it. It is real value for money and may be grossly underpriced. What a great bargain if ever there was one!
I would strongly recommend this new edition for students pursuing courses in gas Turbine Engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and practising engineers involved in all applications of the Gas Turbine.

This is one of the best books available in the market today covering both the theory and applications of gas turbines. It is unique in that the treatment contains both theoretical and practical aspects of gas turbine engineering. As an engineer who has spent over 23 years working with gas turbines I have used earlier editions of this book and it has helped me immensely in getting a clear understanding of gas turbine operations and specifically of the components and matching of turbine and compressors. It is a well-written and organized book that has clearly stood the test of time- this being the 50th year of its publication. Unlike many other traditional gas turbine textbooks, Prof. Saravanamuttoo brings his vast practical and industrial experience into the text -a feature that many operating engineers will appreciate. This edition is noteworthy as it incorporates latest technologies relating to gas turbines (advanced gas turbine, low NOx combustors, new cycles etc.) while retaining it classic lucid writing style. Every engineer who operates a gas turbine can benefit from this book as it will provide a deeper understanding of different components and their interactions. I highly recommend this book!

Generatingfunctionology is, in my opinion, one of the best mathematics books ever written. If you want to read one mathematics book that really makes a difference, this is it! I read the book twice, and I plan to read it again. I went from being rather inept at solving combinatorial problems to being a virtual "master" almost overnight! Wilf's writing style is clear, concise, and even humorous at times. Reading this book is like being blind and then having your eyes opened for the first time. Generating functions are an extremely powerful tool in number theory and combinatorics. Don't pass up this book! You may never become an Euler, but you sure can come close!

This book is freely available online, but it is so good that it is worth buying a hard-copy of, and it's reasonably priced too. I would advise potential buyers to check it out online; you'll probably find that you like it, and you'll probably buy it after you get tired of staring at your screen or making printouts.

Wilf is an outstanding writer, among the best writers in mathematics; this book is a true pleasure to read. His explanations are lucid and he has a great sense of humor. This book is not particularly advanced, although it is one of those texts that you can keep coming back to; it takes quite some time to exhaust the material in it and I have certainly not come close to doing so. It covers generating functions in the form of ordinary power series, exponential power series, and Dirichlet series, and it touches on a few other types of generating functions as well. There is a chapter on the exponential formula and a chapter which explores a more systematic approach to counting. The last chapter is on analytic methods to study asymptotic approximations to counting functions. The book is well organized; topics flow naturally, and yet it is easy to skip topics and move around freely. The exercises are immensely useful. They start simple, but there are many of them and they become progressively more difficult in a natural way.

This book would be suitable for an undergraduate course in combinatorics, and it also makes a good supplementary text for anyone studying combinatorics or possibly complex analysis at the graduate level. I find this book is excellent for self-study at any level as well. Check it out for yourself!

A wonderful book; sometimes it isn't so much formal as requested for a mathematical exposition of the subject. It does not contain so much about analytic combinatorics (study of G.F. according to complex analysis), and hypergeometric functions. But it remains a good book for everyone who never saw something about this subject. It presents to the reader a great variety of manipulating techniques for combinatorial sequences (and not only); I think it is a must-have (also must-read) for everyone who wants to start working in combinatorics; you must read it at least two times to master all the techniques.
Well, and it is written by H. Wilf...I think this can be a good motivation to read it.

This is a well-organized cookbook of generating function techniques. The emphasis is on combinatorial methods (breaking down the generating function into simpler, known functions). There is also a chapter on analytic methods (Lagrange reversion, contour integration, analysis of poles). The chapter on exponential generating functions is especially good; these are used when counting items that have "labelled components" in some sense. The book includes solutions of many difficult combinatorial problems by using generating functions.

I think generating functions are an under-appreciated technique. Studying this book is a relatively painless way to learn about generating functions and their applications.

This book is a wonderful source of inspirational quotations. Through the words of plain folks and great thinkers, you are continually reminded of the spirit of hope and the advancement of the state of working people. The first chapter, This Working Life, has quotes beginning with the Bible and continuing with voices throughout history and from all over the world. The other 16 chapters are more prominently by Americans and about the labor movement. There is a lot more here than quotations. There are short biographies of labor leaders. Photographs and cartoons illustrate issues like unemployment, global competition, and working conditions. The book is a great reminder of how far the average worker has come in the last 100 years, how the fight for a decent living never ends, and how these issues effect all of us. Union members will find the resource directories helpful in finding many more information sources. Overall, a very well thought out book that's captivating and a good resource.

This book delivers a lot more than a collection of quotations about work and the labor movement. Quotations are divided into 17 chapters that cover work issues in everything from Politics and Union Organizing to professional Sports. There's 19th century drawings, photographs and current cartoons that address the issues covered by the quotations. Visually, the book looks like a labor of love--each page is outlined with quotation graphics, and drawings and photos are handled well. To summarize, this book is a great source for quotations; they're easy to track down through 3 different indexes. But what is surprizing is all the history that's presented through the quotations, citations, author comments, and biographies of labor leaders. It's great fun and a very rewarding book. I savored it a few pages at a time.

An excellent full-spectrum labor quote reference.

This is a labor quotation sourcebook and provides an intriguing survey of issues of work and labor drawn from the experiences of the American labor movement. Writers and speakers will find this packed with quotes organized by topic, from civil rights, economics, politics and the law to the corporate world and unemployment. An excellent reference.

This book makes a wonderful gift or a reference to pour over time and time again as it is packed with information about the history of the Lodges of the National Parks, information about their architectural aspects, interviews with individuals involved in their building etc, along with wonderful photos that make you want to see them all, today! And, we understand that there is a NEW Great Lodges of the National Parks coming out in July, 08, along with an accompanying PBS series. If it is anything like this book, I won't be the least bit disappointed

Glorious Photos, Wonderful Book

We purchased this book as a thank-you gift for friends, and we were *delighted* with the quality and beauty of it. Truly glorious photos, not a ton of information but enough, and makes a spectacular gift. Highly recommended.

What a treat to find Great Lodges of the National Parks! Not only is the book full of lucious color photographs of the lodges (both inside and out and every season), but historic images and architectural drawings that make you really appreciate the simple fact that they were built in the first place. You also get the full history along with a sense of what the lodges are like today written in a very accessible style. I know people who are trying to go to all of the lodges in Christine Barnes' books. I plan on beginning this summer. (The book also includes Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood National Forest outside of Portland.)

Glorious photographs will take you there!

This is a gorgeous book.
It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).

16 lodges are featured:
1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
Alberta, Canada)

Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.
