Great Intro to Lumped Parameter Modeling

I picked this book up a few years ago to model some dynamic systems. I liked the book so much; I bought a copy for my team of Mechanical Engineers. This book really breaks down lumped parameter modeling and provides a great refresher to solutions to linear differential equations (both exact and numerical solutions).

In addition to traditional computer numerical algorithms, Mr. Lewis provides examples of doing finite difference modeling using spreadsheets: Very useful! I have used spreadsheet modeling to simulate electrical, fluid, thermal and dc servo systems. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to get started on dynamic system modeling.

Mr Lewis makes understanding modelling easy. Explains with amazing clarity similarity between seemingly different fields of engineering. Though you may have encountered all the material before his method of presenting gives you a better understanding of the subject.

The simplicity, the clarity and the deep understanding of the subject are the main description for this book. Thank you Mr. Lewis for this great book and I hope you write more books in applied engineering.

Excellent approach from a general engineering point of view.

Given that I designed an undergraduate course about engineering modelling for the students in a program on Engineering Systems and Informatics, I looked around and around for a book that spoke about the subject from a general point of view, and not from the particular of any of the specialities.

I have found that Jack Lewis's book is exactly what I was looking for. It is written in a plain language; mathematics are accessible for first semester engineering undergraduate students; it is complete; and it is up to date in this age of informatics. For this reason I have adopted it as the text book for the course that I offer.

What Lewis has done is to approach the engineering modelling problem from a systemic point of view.

As already mentioned above....do not question the price! It is really worth every single cent! I am not a LRE-designer nor do I work in any similar branche...you'll need to work yourself through the subject and especially through the mathematics, but you will be able to design your own rocket motor. It really goes into detail.
This is not only one of the best books I own...it is THE BEST!

i have most of the books on rocket engines that are sold today.
i must say that this is the best book about DESIGN of LIQUID ROCKET ENGINES: if you want to design a LRE, this book gives to you a chance. it's QUITE easy to read, taking in consideration that the topic is very complicate. consider that i'm a computer science university student, and i have no problem in understanding it. this book is about DESIGN, LIQUID ROCKET and ENGINES: so if you are interested in general infos about rockets, missile guidance, solid rocket, apollo on moon, illustrated books about missiles and rockets, cold war secrets etc., you are out of the way.i reported this obvious consideration because sometimes "an AMAZONer" buy some engineering book for his 5 years child and, being the son less than a genius, give to the book 1 star because he lost his money OR, since he doesn't read entirely the title of the book, he thinks that the book is something of *erotic*.

this book is an improvement of the huzel's "st-125" NASA's book, one of the first book used to introduce rocket design elements to nasa's workers when no textbooks on this topic were available. if you already have the st-125, probably you'll find "some" informations redundant. i have also the st-125. i know that
you can find this book for less, but i suggest you to buy "modern engineering.." because st-125 is a '71 pubblication,
and its perspective on liquid rockets engines is 35 years old, and 21 years older; in addition, it is a perspective that not consider the progresses of the nineties: after the end of the cold war, american engineers could collect benefits by the disclosing of russian tecnologies, and this changed some trends in aerospace.
remember that if you know little about rockets but you have a scientific background, there are better books for you. try first the sutton's "rocket propulsion elements" or "Rocket and Spacecraft Propulsion : Principles, Practice and New Developments" by Martin (but i think the first of the two is better worth the price).

i think that the only things that can be improved is the exposition of detailed infos about high pressure rocket engines,
that is to say staged combustion cycle rockets. the most powerful (thrust/weight ratio speaking) engines were all closed cycle engines(including space shuttle's SSME,russian moon rocket's nk-33,atlas' rd-180).

i'm waiting (if possible) for a newer edition of this book. i'd buy it for sure.

OK as far as it goes, but my goodness...

I got this for one of my kids, who was young, and wanted to know why it was difficult to make rockets.

For this purpose, the book is great. It shows you several aspects of the design problems. You can see this from the table of contents - it tries very hard to cover as much ground as is sensible.

The diffculty for European readers is that the units are all imperial, that is, Gallons, Pounds, feet, inches, and so forth. This makes the numerical details - a sense of scale for what is being discussed - quite inaccesible for most of us over here. It's worth noting that also lead to the downfall of at least one recent space mision to Mars.

Remarks like "its not rocket science" can certainly be shown as having a truthful sort of origin by looking at this. To "do" anything with this book, you would absolutely have to develop further and deeply in the following disciplines;

1. Chemistry
2. Metallurgy
3. Thermodynamics
4. Mechanics
5. Experience with CAD, esp. simulation with solid and liquid state systems.
6. Maths
7. Electronics,
8. Reliability...
9. ???

I wonder if any single mind could get round all of these, possibly, but you would be pretty lucky to get the chance nowadays. Education isn't cheap.

I don't think, though that there is any harm in wanting to get as close to this as you like. The book is truly wonderful, almost a work of art, and even if jobs in this area are scarce, this has got to be worthwhile. Read this, do the background study, get a degree or two, and you may eventually get into industrial plant design, maybe even medical electronics, aerospace, or something. Why not? The world would be a better place if more people would dream a bit and aspire to do the hard stuff. I am full of admiration for people who did better than I did and are working in these kinds of fields.

I'm going to get a few more books in this series, though I have to say, I'm a bit nervous about ordering books with titles including the words "missile propulsion". We live in troubled times.

Excellent Book in Power Electronics and Motor Drives, May 4, 2002
Reviewer: Prof. Cong Wang from China Univ. of Mining and Tech., Beijing, China
Prof. Bose, author of the book, is well-known in the world in the field of power electronics, and it is an honor to review his book. The book is a masterpiece contribution in power electronics and drives area. I was teaching his previous book "Power Electronics and AC Drives" (1986) for more than 10 years in my undergraduate and graduate classes. In 1999 our University published the Chinese Version of his another book "Power Electronics and Variable frequency Drives"(1996), I was one of the translators. I was delighted to see this updated, expanded and technologically enhanced book. It will now easily replace his previous book. It is difficult to imagine that anybody else other than Prof. Bose can write such an authoritative book. The writing style is superb, and difficult things have been expressed in clear language.

The book covers almost everything in power electronics and motor drives. It starts with power semiconductor devices, and then covers different classes of converters. The induction and synchronous motor drives (with control and estimation) have been discussed in detail. Finally, the special feature of the book is coverage on artificial intelligence applications in power electronics which have not been treated in any other book on power electronics. There is a separate Problems Manual of the book. I should recommend the book in undergraduate (Senior) and graduate courses in all universities.

Review Date: 2003-08-15
The book attracted my interest for its unique assortment of contents in power electronics, and modern concepts of motor start and speed controls. It covers various principles and applications of AC-DC-AC conversion and AC-AC conversion possible to use for the motor controls with adequate mathematical, graphical and text contents, e.g. rarely seen families of curves/characteristics pertaining to motors. The AC-AC conversion is evolving and has a good chance for the wider application in the future since its hardware is lighter with potentially fewer overall switching devices; therefore, it is attractive to ship, aircraft, etc. applications. This Author's vision certainly deserves the highest rating for his creation.
The areas that might have been included are, for example: Harmonic filters and their principles and applications in the energy conversion. For example, the hybrid filters, and various topologies of passive, active and hybrid filters as applied to energy converters or motor drives. These are presently heavily focused on by the Power Quality specialists."

Power electronics evolved, taking root and growing into a blossomed tree, inch by inch, from thyristors to transistors to DC drives to microprocessors to advanced converters to AC drives to sensorless control and estimation to AI (artificial intelligence) based control with much more to still come.
Power electronics and variable frequency drives are multidisciplinary fields in electrical engineering. Therefore, a book that encompasses such comprehensive knowledge has to be written by an author who has a visionary engineering knowledge. Prof. Bose is a celebrity, he has been investigating and contributing for this field for more than 40 years and have been contributing widely with more than 150 papers, 21 U.S. patents, 6 books, tutorials and keynote addresses throughout the world. His comprehensive understanding of such field is unique; this book is really recommended if you want to learn what is modern power electronics and ac drives!

For Student or Working Engineer

Review Date: 2002-07-17
The reader need only be well grounded in the theory and practice of DC-DC converter design. If so, this grand survey course opens the way to the much larger world of AC power conversion. The impressive breadth of scope is attained within a reasonably modest length (<700 pages) due to the use of telling figures and diagrams, and the author's gift for getting right to the point: what does it do; how does it do it; and what are the advantages/disadvantages versus competing topologies. The presentation seems to include just sufficient detail to enable rapid evaluation of each approach for a given purpose, but never so much detail as to bog down the pace.

Unlike many academics, the author appreciates both elegance of approach and practicality of implementation given available technology and devices. Thus, some topologies are included "for completeness", some are described as "widely used" in large-power industrial applications, and yet another might be described as having "an extensive literature" but few or no commercial products, etc. This will be a valuable up-to-the-minute reference for working power electronic engineers as well as students.

Mike Bohn has succeeded in opening to the reader a portion of the White House that few understand - let alone acknowledge its existence or function. The Situation Room truly is the "Nerve Center" for the country - both in times of crisis and in peace time. It is a central briefing room for the President, and a contact center for countries around the globe. Before reading this wonderful book, I hadn't thought about how calls to heads-of-state were made on behalf of the President, but now I can see why they would all go through the Situation Room.

If you are a fan of political movies, and want to know the truth behind the Hollywood fiction, or are just a political junkie, then this truly is the one book you want on your shelf!

One day a new waitress arrived at the Tropicana, she was quiet, kept to herself, but in Vegas, you don't ask questions; sometimes you don't want to know, other times you just aren't meant to know.
I had no idea this quiet one was an author! The poor girl fell victim to the cattiness of the other waitresses. I want to apologize for what she went through. I was fresh off the farm when I moved to Vegas and spent many a night walking home, crying.I know what you went through. (The town WILL toughen you up in time.)
When the local newspaper printed a short blurb about an author writing a tell-all book I had to get a copy!! Wow, WHAT A BOOK!-PLEASE write another!
And I'm sorry some of the girls were catty, you were sweet despite everything.

I'm also disappointed that this book is out of print. I think every kid should read this book since it will tell them a lot more about the world of work than the usual "Occupational Outlook Handbook" assignment given out by schools. The long hours and hard work of the roadie, the jerkish customers and low tips of the Vegas cocktail waitress are just a few things in this book that the kids might find enlightening.

This is one of my favorite books to have around and let people read. Lynn Snowden is a most entertaining writer and I really enjoyed the brief peek into so many worlds. Her tour with Skid Row was my favorite since it's so foreign to me. It did crack me up how she had to learn certain basics about office work, such as how you are always supposed to look busy, and the low, low temperatures to keep you from falling asleep.

I agree with the previous reviewer: Lynn Snowden, it's time for you to write something else!

This book is a delight--it's a pop version of Studs Terkel's WORKING, only author Lynn Snowden goes Studs one better: Instead of just talking with people about what their jobs are like, she actually works the jobs! From the horrors of being a housewife (the scariest chapter in the book) to her in-your-face observations of males and their pseudo-sexual behavior (the time she danced as a stripper), Snowden seldom lets the reader down. She is enormously aware of the unimportance of her ego in each job, and she never patronizes those with whom she works. She really gets in there and does the job--with hilarious and sometimes angry abandon. This book is about the nine jobs you don't want your son or daughter to have, but, disturbingly, it's also a book about all jobs and the politics of the workplace. Let me out of here!

Ms. Snowden's accounts of her adventures in nine different jobs demonstrate a brilliant understanding of the workplace and its effects on one's identity, while at the same time explaining this connection with a wonderfully witty and dry sense of humor. Addditionally, Snowden's ability to poke fun at herself and her assumptions about various jobs prior to doing them offer an excellent insight into and challenge our own preconceived ideas about upper, middle, and lower class occupations. It's quite obvious the author has a love for language (english, that is) and is thankfully influenced by writers such as Tom Wolfe and Martin Amis. I'm sorry to see her book is no longer in print as I believe it an enjoyable experience for anyone who's ever worked, or dreamed about working, anywhere. I do hope Lynn Snowden writes a second book, and on what, quite frankly, I don't care, due to the fact she could probably make boiling water interesting.

A great book, although technically out of my league. I did enjoy the philosophical approach to the establishment of current global military and indistrial conditions, as well as the fictional introduction of the non-lethal weapons into the battlefield. It was a difficult subject, but the author did a great job of writing it so that all of us could follow the logic and the dream. If you want the world to change its waring ways then this book is a grand start.

I recently listened to the author lecture at a Carmel, California bookstore and was facinated by his intellect and wisdom which seemed to be without limits. To be perfectly honest, he didn't recommend this book himself. He jokingly referred to it as a "technological sleeper" wroght with historical analysis and theory. He even balked at the price. However, I was so intrigued by his manner that I couldn't help myself, I ordered it. It is highly philosophical, theoretical and analytical all in one work. I have no technical background, I'm an artist and school teacher, but I found the book easy to read. It is an inspiring work, especially since it was written by a man who once spent his life as a soldier. Buy this book and catch a hopefull glimpse into the future of conflict resolution, and then do what you can to help make what he says a reality.

As a new manager working with Nortel products, I have found this book quite useful. It is not necessary for me to be able to configure a router. I do need to have a general understanding of the technology and the products. This book has accomplished both of these requirements for me. I would recommend this book to any person looking to gain a clearer understanding of networking in general. Although it does cover Nortel products, it covers the technology in general, so this book would be valuable regardless of whose product is being used.

This is an extremely clear introduction to Boolean Algebra. It is very well written and edited. Plenty of exercises will answers to cement the concepts in your brain.

The book covers number systems, logic gates, and some elementary set theory. They are all covered well. There is no coverage of flip-flops which I would have liked to have seen.

I should note this is not an electronics book. There are no real circuits but there are plenty of logic diagrams. Read this book to understand the concepts then go on to an electronic book if you actually wanted to build any of this stuff.

Incredible book for understanding boolean algebra. What I like about the book is the simple and clear language that the author uses and a lot of very helpful examples throughout the book to help understand the concept.

I learned Optimal Control before 30 years and I forgot everything . I tried learn again with my old notebook and lot of files found on the web, but I have got broken knowledge. Now with this book I know Optimal Control even better from the past.

Very good book.

A complete introduction to optimal control theory, both from the point of view of dynamic programming and the Pontryagin's maximum principle. Ideal for starters like myself!

It is an excellent "first book" which is very easy to read and covers broad range of topics: Dynamic Programming leading to Hamilton-Jacobi using Bellman's principle, Calculus of Variations, Hamiltonian Equations, Pontryagin's principle and finally numerical solutions (two point boundary value problems based and using direct methods from operations research methods).

Classic that never goes out of style

My professor chosed this book to use in an Optimal Control class partly because it is very affordable. On top of that, its contents are superb, giving very clear explanations of the fundamental principles underlying Optimal Control for nonlinear/linear systems.

Despite its long history, I would think that all material are still relevant, although there are available more "modern" numerical techniques (it's still always good to know how things were done "back in those days"). I would grade this as a must-have for the beginning student in Optimal Control. I have always been a fan of Dover books, publishing quality books at rock bottom prices. This one has just reinforced my liking of Dover Publishing.

THE Space Suit Book

This book covers a lot of territory and is essential to learning the fundamentals of space suit engineering. Not only does Mr. Harris trace the history of the space suit, he also discusses practical engineering matters. This book contains rare photographs in addition to drawings by the author that illustrate the space suit components, assemblies, and concepts. I have read most other popular books on space suits, but this one packs the most information by far. This book is logically segmented and can be used as an excellent reference. For a true appreciation for the challenges of space suit engineering, this is the book to get.

If you want to REALLY learn a lot about the development of suits, the technical tradeoffs and see how the bidding process and internal conflicts helped and hindered the US suit evolution, BUY THIS BOOK.

Hardcover is the choice, as you'll read this over and over. There's a lot here, you'll want to read it in installments. Rockets are flashy, but spacesuits protect the men that went into space.

I work for Caterpillar and we deal with these: the advantage (and trade-offs) of choosing a set technical path / solution and how this impacts the later generations of any product. It applies to everything we use and buy, but it's REALLY intersting to see for a spacesuit.

An Excellent Book on EVA Suits

Mr. Harris has written an excellent book on the history of the EVA suit. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the design of EVA suits and how they got to where they are today. Mr. Harris goes into enough detail to allow you to understand how the various suits work (both pros and cons) but not so much as to bore the reader. For those who want more detail, there is an extensive list of resources in the book. In short, if you want to learn about EVA suits, buy this book and read it.

The author also outlines the intricate procedure followed by NASA in contracting a space suit. NASA doesn't select a space suit; it selects a conractor. It involves a whole range of considerations such as cost, integration of the PLSS and suit, who were the contractor's key personnel, design and test philosophy of the contractor, certfication method, prior experience, who the subcontractors were, scheduling and delivery, and how compatible the suit system is with the spacecraft. In addition, blatant national political factors more than likely affected contractor selection; how much money was NASA already spending in the respective states of the suit competitors, who were the states' representatives and did NASA owe the representative any potical favors?

This volume is Bible of the space suits, covered in over 500 pages in fine print. It addresses almost all issues relating to the EVA suit in one volume. It is perhaps the only source book of space suits. It is rare occassion that an entire volume of the AAS History Series is devoted to a single topiuc, which indeed is an honor to the author. In Indian context, may be the ISRO has no plans to design a space suit, since there are no plans of any manned space mission as of today, but eventually it will have. This book will serve as a reference in design specification and technical details of the various types of EVA suits and their suitability for a particular mission.

Bound in blue hard cover as usual, the book has a illustration of the Litton RX-5A hard suit being demonstrated on a simulated lunar surface.

Gary Harris wrote the most precise and complete space suits book ever. I thought I knew some about space suits design, but after reading "The Origins and Technology of the Advanced Extra-Vehicular Space Suit" I learned a lot more. This book is so interesting and passionate about the history and development of advanced EVA suits. Full of good photos and explanatory drawings it is a MUST for any serious reader interested in space suits. The book also cover technical issues, so it is useful for the engineer, scientist and student.
I predict this book will become a classic for life support systems and EVA engineers in the years to come.
