The chapters are divided by battery chemistry, and each is written by an expert in the field. Most chapters include detailed technical descriptions of chemistry, electrical characteristics, construction details, applications, and pros/cons charts.
The 3rd edition features significant changes, including updates to older sections as well as new sections on progress in advanced battery systems, and an immense new section on lithium-ion batteries.
My only complaint is the lack of uniformity across chapters in terms of informational content and format. This can make comparison of battery technologies difficult. Some chapters go into too much technical detail, while some others leave out critical considerations.
These are relatively minor quibbles, however, and do not make the Handbook any less valuable to anyone dealing with batteries or other energy storage systems.

The downsides are that it weighs a ton and that the pages are so dense that you might as well be reading a dictionary cover to cover--a dictionary that's all about batteries.

Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.
Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.

Spaceflight Log: 1961-2006", a compendium of every manned mission
from Gagarin to Spaceshift One.
In the author's preface he makes a point that I had been craving
for years:
"A particularly popular sub-niche is the astronaut bgraphy, a
somewhat variable collection of tomes that do much to relate the
story of humanity's only fora away from the grip of planet Earth.
Other volumes relate, in varying levels of detail, what the
intrepid explores actually did during their far too brief spells
on the surface of another world.
"Remarkably few books discuss the practical aspects of how
the voyage form the Earth to the Moon was achieved. The genre
seldom describes the equipment that was used; nor does it relate
the procedures and techniques that allowe the Apollo crews
to accomplish their audacious task: in general, historians
are not concerned with how a feat was achieved technically.
Instead, the dominant form of written history on Apollo studies
the experiences and interrelationships of the pople involved,
the political and social millieu in which they operated or it is
the polemic and ranting of those who are doing the commentating.
[...] The details of how something was achieved are considered to
be the realm of the 'geek' or 'nerd', and should not be presented
to the general public."
I've recently finished "In the Shadow of the Moon" and enjoyed
the stories of all of the astronaunts (and cosmonauts) who made it
into space, and how they were selected by the beocratic system to
be so honored. In case you were wondering, Alfred Worden was the first
divorced astronaut (an entire chapter!) and Boris Volynov was overlooked
for years due to his Jewish mother (being another chapter!).
Likewise, "The Right Stuff" is full of fighter-pilot bravado,
womanizing and alcool.
These are fascinating stories, but the are woefully lacking in the
technical details! Where is the red meat for the (geeky) base?
I want to know who designed the F-1 rocket motor and how the LOX
inlet combines the hypergolic fluid with the output of the turbo pump.
I want to read about the six dozen different abort modes that were
considered and the detailed arguments about earth orbit rendezvous,
lunar orbit rendezvous, direct TLI and why we selected LOR.
I want to know the Max-Q for the Saturn V as compared to the
Delta IV Heavy and the SSME. And I want details on the solid
waste system!
"How Apollo Flew to the Moon" delivers. I've been reading it all
evening and feel that it was written for me. Why aren't there more
historical books like this?

Chapters one and two are at a rather high level and introductory. However, in chapter 3 the book gets much more specific. Chapter 3 discusses the functions and performance parameters common to CCD and CMOS image sensors. Chapter 4 describes in detail the CCD image sensors widely used in imaging applications. The chapter ranges from a discussion of basic CCD operating principles to descriptions of CCDimage sensors specifically designed for DSC applications. Chapter 5 discusses CMOS image sensor technology. Chapter 6, the final chapter focusing on sensors, describes methods for evaluating image sensor performances relative to DSC requirements.
Chapter 7 shifts gears and begins the discussing of image processing algorithms. The discussion begins with color theory and its application to DSCs. Chapter 8 presents the algorithms utilized by DSC's in both hardware and software. Basic image processing and camera control algorithms are shown along with some image processing examples. Chapter 9 discusses the performance parameters for DSCs and digital video cameras followed by descriptions of the architectures of signal processing engines. Examples of the analog front-end and the digital back-end designs are introduced. Chapter 10 shows how each component previously described affects image quality. The final chapter discusses future DSC image sensors and explores a new paradigm for image sensors.
The reader should have an electrical engineering background since there are quite a few circuit diagrams shown involving transistors, and it is hard to follow the discussion if you are not already aware of their theory of operation. It is a very good book for its target audience, but students with pure computer science backgrounds who are coming to this looking for just the mathematics or algorithms of image processing may found themselves lost in the discussions involving pn junctions, which are numerous.

I strongly recommend it to all graduate students/engineers in CMOS imaging.
I wish I got it during my grad studies....but it is never late to learn and enjoy!!! :-)

So far I have found only one error in the book. There is something terribly wrong in paragraph 2.2.2, page 32. It is stated that "Depth of the field - ... - is proportional to the square of the focal length of the imaging optics." In fact, the depth of field is inversely proportional to the focal length. Then Eq. 2.11 on page 33 is described once as giving a hyperfocal distance (above the equation) and below the equation is described as giving the depth of the field. I think this part seems to be missing some lines.
Overall, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something at a technically advanced level.

Peck was a clinical psychiatrist - the material for this book came largely from his experiences with clients and others, seeing what worked and what didn't, what was missing and what was mis-understood. Often cases involved psychotherapy (talk therapy), but the processes here are not confined to therapists' offices. The same kinds of problem solving, processing and relationship building that takes place in psychotherapy can be used as life-long tools.
Peck resists labels such as Freudian and Jungian; he doesn't look for, nor does he offer, quick fixes or the psychotherapeutic variety of the get-rich-quick schemes. This book is not a therapy manual, but rather a guide to spiritual growth that incorporates therapeutic and psychological principles. Peck echoes the sentiments of many spiritual directors and leaders through the millennia that spiritual and personal growth are long journeys, not short leaps. It involves dedication and intention, and a willingness to accept risk and change.
Perhaps it is ironic that, given this, the first topic Peck focuses upon is Discipline. However, without discipline, change can go unchecked and uncharted, growth can become problematic, and the human soul becomes susceptible to a host of difficulties. Dedication and application to problem-solving and long-term building (whether it be of retirement funds or of one's own spirit) requires a disciplined approach that recognises that life is difficulty (the first of Buddha's Four Noble Truths, cited by Peck), gratification sometimes needs to be delayed for greater goods, and reality needs to be approached and dealt with responsibly.
Peck calls here for a life to be totally dedicated to the truth. This is hard, because we as human beings are so accustomed to rationalisation and reinterpretation. This kind of dedication also requires a balance in life, and an ability to be flexible as the truths of our lives change - few of us are in possession of timeless and eternal truths governing every aspect of our lives, and often those who feel they are end up disappointed in the end. The continuing creativity of God in our lives requires flexibility, but this is best achieved in a disciplined and balanced context.
Peck then turns to love, a mysterious thing even in the best of times. He identifies some of the myths of `falling in love' and romantic love that our culture through various means idealises, leading to great dissatisfaction when we do not achieve the desired feelings or situations. Peck makes the assertion that love is not really a feeling, but rather an action or activity, that involves a lot of risk-taking (Peck talks about risks of independence, of commitment, of confrontation, and of loss). True love requires discipline and recognition of the needs of the self and others.
The final two sections of the text deal with aspects of religion on the spiritual and psychological development of persons. The first section looks at religion and growth processes. He does a short survey of some attitudes toward religions and denominations, as well as a look at how the modern scientific mindset colours the worldview of modern people, particularly with ideas of verification and skepticism. Some psychologists and theorists have wondered if religion were mass delusions, mass psychosis, or some other kind of sickness. Peck uses interesting extended case studies here to examine the role of various aspects of religion in the developmental lives of several people. Peck asks the question, `Is belief in God a psychopathology?' In some aspects, and for some people, the way they approach and `use' religion, the answer may well be yes. However, Peck also takes the psychotherapeutic community to task for often being too narrow or too dismissive of the value of religious sentiment and institutions in the lives of their charges.
The final section looks at the role of grace in the spiritual growth process. Grace is another mysterious force, like love, that is difficult to pin down and explain. It is also something uncontrollable. Why do some with artistic talent end up being successful and celebrated, and others not? Why do some use their talent, when others don't? In cases of ultimate despair, Peck makes the observation that while it is often clear why some people commit suicide, it is not often clear why others in the same situations don't. Some of this has to do with the unconscious mind that guides us, and some of it has to do with the miracle of serendipity, as Peck describes it.
Peck describes in some detail his concept of what grace is and how it works, in very general terms that relate to no denomination or religion in particular, but has wide applicability. He talks both about resistance to grace and the welcoming of grace. Grace is not easy, and often comes with responsibilities (Bonhoeffer talks about cheap grace; the requirements of grace are noted through scriptures of many religions). Welcoming grace welcomes often more than we bargained for, but also often more than we hoped.
In his afterword, Peck discusses the difficulties of writing in an organised and linear fashion about something so fundamentally disorganised as spiritual growth and therapeutic processes. He also talks about the need for finding competent help when required - ability is not measured by degrees, he states (something true in many professions). This is useful for those seeking a first therapeutic relationship, or needing a change.

In fact, the basic concepts behind lean manufacturing are simple. The problem with most lean manufacturing books is that the authors often complicate the subject to make themselves seem as though they are smarter and have something unique to add (when they really don't). This book keeps lean simple.

The title under review has come as a surprise, not only because it far exceeds the standard usually set for handbooks but also because it has achieved the unique distinction of being a reference work equally useful and valuable for industry professionals, practising engineers, consultants, technicians, students, teachers, research scholars and all others professionally interested in industrial power systems.
By virtue of their diversity, complexity and size, industrial power systems throw a formidable challenge to the electrical engineer. Standard electrical engineer's handbooks do not address the requirements of this special field completely. For the large number of day-to-day problems faced by production, operation and maintenance engineers working in industries there are few dedicated reference books to fall back upon for guidance. The ones that are available also do not cover the ground adequately. The present work is perhaps the most complete industrial power systems handbook currently available.

One detailed flip-through leaves you convinced of the publisher's claim that "never before has so much ground been covered in a single volume reference source". Apart from doing yeomen's service to practising engineers, the author has done a great favour to teachers at technical institutes who have limited access to information from the Industry. Students will now not be deprived of this kind of information since teachers can always refer this excellent handbook to reply to questions raised in the classroom.
The production values of the book are excellent. Each page is lavishly illustrated with high quality drawings, graphs and photographs. The overall structuring of the book is excellent.
There is no capsule biography of the author anywhere in the book. For most readers Agrawal will remain only a name.
At the end of it all, the book emerges as a landmark achievement in its field. When you put it down, you cannot help wishing there were separate handbooks of identical character in the areas of transmission, distribution and utilization too.

This book starts with the mathematical basics behind linear programming and develops on these introducing new techniques like Bender's decomposition, various cuts, etc. The way the mathematics is dealt is flawless but I thought the methods required more examples for better understanding. But ofcourse the book had to be concise....
I have no opinion on the combinatorial optimisation part.

The availability of free downloadable micromechanics and structural analysis software makes it unique.
I am impressed with the scope, which covers materials, manufacturing processes, micromechanics and behavior of plates and shells. There is a considerable amount of useful detail, such as types of stiffeners. In addition, it touches on important practical issues such as corrosion and flammability.
Each chapter has exercises and a significant list of references, making it a useful classroom text.
I highly recommend it....
