I got this book when it was published in 1995, and have used it at least twice a year just using NiCd batteries. There are many times I read something on the Internet that is simply wrong according to this book. I have used NiCd batteries that I would have otherwise thrown away because the information in this book told me that they were not irreparably damaged.

As a battery engineer, I've found this handbook the single most useful technical reference in battery design, application, and troubleshooting.

The chapters are divided by battery chemistry, and each is written by an expert in the field. Most chapters include detailed technical descriptions of chemistry, electrical characteristics, construction details, applications, and pros/cons charts.

The 3rd edition features significant changes, including updates to older sections as well as new sections on progress in advanced battery systems, and an immense new section on lithium-ion batteries.

My only complaint is the lack of uniformity across chapters in terms of informational content and format. This can make comparison of battery technologies difficult. Some chapters go into too much technical detail, while some others leave out critical considerations.

These are relatively minor quibbles, however, and do not make the Handbook any less valuable to anyone dealing with batteries or other energy storage systems.

I bought this book because I had an assignment at work that required me to learn every possible thing about lithium ion batteries. I consulted general interest encyclopedias, battery experts at universities, and various online sources, but none of the above provided the comprehensive, unbiased information that Handbook of Batteries promised. It includes useful comparison charts and historical information about the development of single-use and secondary batteries, from the clunky short-lived lead-acid battery of the 1800s to the fuel cells of today. The language is surprisingly easy to understand for the lay person.

The downsides are that it weighs a ton and that the pages are so dense that you might as well be reading a dictionary cover to cover--a dictionary that's all about batteries.

This book is a terrific reference. It presents copious examples along with very thorough identification for sources. It allows me to quickly pick a style that fits the need and also provides enough information to allow me to dig a little deeper and investigate a particular style through other reference material. Just perfect for what I need and wonderful for my uses.

Originally published in 1888, this book is the real deal. Honestly, this book renders so many others I have on the shelf useless. It goes through EVERYTHING ornamental from furniture, to alphabets, to architecture, to tracery, plain design, cutlery, and everything else you can think of. At first, I scoffed when I got this book because it covered such a wide range of ornamentation. I mean, what book have you ever seen that does a GOOD job covering a range? Then, when I got into it, I realized that it DOES go into detail in each section. Having 3000 images makes this possible, but what I like too, is there is a substantial amount of text explainig where the design comes from.

I think its nearly impossible to find a book this rich in resources for less than $20 USD.

This is an indispensable resource for the novice or serious designer/painter. Some designs are very small, and others are so ornate that they would be difficult to reproduce without spending considerable time and effort. However, I found most to be easy to scan, print on a transparency, and enlarge with an overhead projector. The section called "bands" has beautiful designs that could be handpainted or made into border stencils. Chapters include geometric designs, natural forms such as foliage, fruit and flowers, mythical creatures, individual ornaments, capitals and bases for columns, decorative panels, vases, several lettering styles, and much more.

Not only does this book contain a huge assortment of extremely clean and scannable examples of ornamental designs from different periods and cultures, but also provides diagrams and information you can use to create your own original designs in a given style. This may be the last book I buy (except newer copies of THIS book!) on ornamental design.

This book has been in print since 1888! Yes, it's that good! It's a bound version of an earlier work that was a folio. Forty years ago, my art teacher showed me his copy. I went out and got one. It's still on the shelves, but price has risen. It a collection of drawings from many sources: Cathedrals, Estates, Chateau, public buildings, museums and their contents! All collected before the Franco-Prussian war. Many things that no longer exist in this world. If you wish to depict life in the dark ages, the renaissance, Atlantis, Troy, the enlightenment, Hyboria, Byzantium, Rome, Carthage, etc., YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!

I found this in the Rizzoli bookstore and had to slit the shrinkwrap to see what the book was like. Then sat down in a soft chair to browse through it but after a half hour decided it made more sense to just buy it and read it at home. Not disappointed. The book covers everything in great detail - lots of text - with pictures of hotels from the Chilean Andes to London and Paris and New York. A "must have" for people interested in travel and hotels and architecture.

I was assigned to teach at the Master Degree class on "Facility Management" subject focusing on Hotel Facility. I have gone through several books regarding hotel design. I think this book is the best of all. Any designer who reads this book back to back will certainly understand the whole concept. It is not only about how to design the hotel as an architecture piece, but the reader will also understand the hospitality business. This book also covers the design and management issues of related topics such as "Restaurant", "Entertainment Venue" in the hotel. It is the 'must have' for all architects who want to design a hotel efficiently. It can also be a good book for anyone who is in the hospitality business and currently in charge of renovating or upgrading the hotel space; or the hotel's representative who need to communicate with architects or interior designer. This book can be the great tool to evaluate the result of the hotel construction project or even to 'correct' it. The tables and formulas for space calculation in this book are easy enough for anyone to understand. This book can be of great use to all building design professionals. It can also be a valuable one for any people who is interested in hotel business.

The work of hotel design and planning is different from other architectural works; it requires an indepth understanding of hotel business. Therefore, the hotel architecture became one of the toughest job for architects. (Another job is the hospital architecture.)

However, this book proposed design guidelines for a hotel fit to the business pattern. First, it explains various types of hotel properties. Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.

Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.

I am an Interior Design student and found this book very helpful in completing a hospitality design. It provides a breakdown of the areas of the hotel, the different types of hotels, and the type of customers that use them. It really helped me in laying out the floor plan. There are also some awesome color pictures of fabulous hotels in the world. I highly recommend for anyone interested in hospitality design.

This a book that be should always be close to you if you work in the hotel development industry.

How was the pyramids built? Humanity tends to easily forget how great achievements are made, at least close to their actually performance. However, over time the question "how" is often subject to more debate and interest than the question "why" and "who". This book really fills the gap and explains in great detail the different technical aspects of Apollo's fligths to the moon. It's also written in such way that you really don't have to be a nobel prize winner to understand it or appreciate it. If you haven't read any books on this subject before, I strongly recommend you to begin with this!

I think this is a great book. I'm an Engineer and am therefore quite interested in the technical aspects of the Apollo program. I found this book covered enough of the technical aspects to satisfy my curiosity, but not too much to bore me with details. It is very well written and an easy read. I'd recommend it for anyone who is interested in descriptions of the hardware as well as how and why the missions were run in the way that they were.

This is a wonderful book! As an aviation Journalist I write about these topics myself - but David Woods helped me a lot with filling the gaps in my knowledge about Apollo. Of all the (about 50) books I have about the Lunar Landings, this is among the best four! (The other two are "Last Man on the Moon by Gene Cernan", Scott Sullivan's two books "Virtual LM" and "Virtual Apollo" and "Stages to Saturn". Many of the other books really only copy the official historical documents - but David Woods explains the stuff nobody else bothered to explain. Best example: the trajectories of Apollo took to the Moon. This is the book that explains the physics in a way a non-rocket scientist will understand it intuitively!

This is an outstanding work and a great compliment to the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal. I received it today and didn't put it down till I scanned the whole thing. I can't wait to give it a detailed read. It explains how the whole project was possible and should answer any 'naysayers' with scientific explanations of the successes and the problems that had to be dealt with.

Praxis, the company that also printed "The Manned
Spaceflight Log: 1961-2006", a compendium of every manned mission
from Gagarin to Spaceshift One.

In the author's preface he makes a point that I had been craving
for years:

"A particularly popular sub-niche is the astronaut bgraphy, a
somewhat variable collection of tomes that do much to relate the
story of humanity's only fora away from the grip of planet Earth.
Other volumes relate, in varying levels of detail, what the
intrepid explores actually did during their far too brief spells
on the surface of another world.

"Remarkably few books discuss the practical aspects of how
the voyage form the Earth to the Moon was achieved. The genre
seldom describes the equipment that was used; nor does it relate
the procedures and techniques that allowe the Apollo crews
to accomplish their audacious task: in general, historians
are not concerned with how a feat was achieved technically.
Instead, the dominant form of written history on Apollo studies
the experiences and interrelationships of the pople involved,
the political and social millieu in which they operated or it is
the polemic and ranting of those who are doing the commentating.
[...] The details of how something was achieved are considered to
be the realm of the 'geek' or 'nerd', and should not be presented
to the general public."

I've recently finished "In the Shadow of the Moon" and enjoyed
the stories of all of the astronaunts (and cosmonauts) who made it
into space, and how they were selected by the beocratic system to
be so honored. In case you were wondering, Alfred Worden was the first
divorced astronaut (an entire chapter!) and Boris Volynov was overlooked
for years due to his Jewish mother (being another chapter!).
Likewise, "The Right Stuff" is full of fighter-pilot bravado,
womanizing and alcool.

These are fascinating stories, but the are woefully lacking in the
technical details! Where is the red meat for the (geeky) base?
I want to know who designed the F-1 rocket motor and how the LOX
inlet combines the hypergolic fluid with the output of the turbo pump.
I want to read about the six dozen different abort modes that were
considered and the detailed arguments about earth orbit rendezvous,
lunar orbit rendezvous, direct TLI and why we selected LOR.
I want to know the Max-Q for the Saturn V as compared to the
Delta IV Heavy and the SSME. And I want details on the solid
waste system!

"How Apollo Flew to the Moon" delivers. I've been reading it all
evening and feel that it was written for me. Why aren't there more
historical books like this?

This book focuses on image acquisition and signal processing in digital still cameras (DSC's). From the perspective of the flow of image information, a DSC consists of imaging optics, an image sensor, and a signal processing block that receives a signal from the image sensor and generates digital data that is eventually compressed andstored on a memory device in the DSC.

Chapters one and two are at a rather high level and introductory. However, in chapter 3 the book gets much more specific. Chapter 3 discusses the functions and performance parameters common to CCD and CMOS image sensors. Chapter 4 describes in detail the CCD image sensors widely used in imaging applications. The chapter ranges from a discussion of basic CCD operating principles to descriptions of CCDimage sensors specifically designed for DSC applications. Chapter 5 discusses CMOS image sensor technology. Chapter 6, the final chapter focusing on sensors, describes methods for evaluating image sensor performances relative to DSC requirements.

Chapter 7 shifts gears and begins the discussing of image processing algorithms. The discussion begins with color theory and its application to DSCs. Chapter 8 presents the algorithms utilized by DSC's in both hardware and software. Basic image processing and camera control algorithms are shown along with some image processing examples. Chapter 9 discusses the performance parameters for DSCs and digital video cameras followed by descriptions of the architectures of signal processing engines. Examples of the analog front-end and the digital back-end designs are introduced. Chapter 10 shows how each component previously described affects image quality. The final chapter discusses future DSC image sensors and explores a new paradigm for image sensors.

The reader should have an electrical engineering background since there are quite a few circuit diagrams shown involving transistors, and it is hard to follow the discussion if you are not already aware of their theory of operation. It is a very good book for its target audience, but students with pure computer science backgrounds who are coming to this looking for just the mathematics or algorithms of image processing may found themselves lost in the discussions involving pn junctions, which are numerous.

I have reviewed quite a few books on cameras and image sensors. Being in the business, I have quite a large library of books related to this field. However, Nakamura nailed it all with this book. A very well written - almost in layman's terms - that addresses all the technical components that make up a camera. If you are looking to understand the principles of a digital camera, this book is for you.

I read many parts of this book and I think that
it was well written for a wide range of users from optics to image quality metrics.

I strongly recommend it to all graduate students/engineers in CMOS imaging.

I wish I got it during my grad studies....but it is never late to learn and enjoy!!! :-)

The optics chapter (2) is pretty lousy. The part for sensors are just excellent. I found it systematically reviewed I've been reading fragmently from here and there for the past few months. My life would have been much better if I got this book earlier!!

This is an excellent book. It covers a wide range of topics in a very detailed manner, suitable for university level students and professionals.

So far I have found only one error in the book. There is something terribly wrong in paragraph 2.2.2, page 32. It is stated that "Depth of the field - ... - is proportional to the square of the focal length of the imaging optics." In fact, the depth of field is inversely proportional to the focal length. Then Eq. 2.11 on page 33 is described once as giving a hyperfocal distance (above the equation) and below the equation is described as giving the depth of the field. I think this part seems to be missing some lines.

Overall, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something at a technically advanced level.

When I first read this book, I didn't have much experience in life and had a very short memory. As I grew in experience I realized that many of the positive changes in my thinking were seeded by ideas I gained reading this when I was relatively barren emotionally and intellectually. The person I was when I first read this book is now but a memory. But the amount and the kind of guidance I got along the way or continue to get from various sources is regulated by my own readiness to understand and eventually accept. I credit this work for giving me a place to start.

I read this book back when I was 18 and besides all its other values, I was completely cured of procrastination after reading it!

Read this book as it has the ability to allow you to transform your life.

I first read M. Scott Peck's 'The Road Less Travelled' over 20 years ago, but it is a text to which I return again and again, as Peck's insights and observations remain a constant source of inspiration and guidance in my life. It still finds a ready home in the hands of therapists, counselors, ministers, teachers, career planners, and others as part of their resources, and is not out of place in the home of anyone who cares about the directions of her or his life.

Peck was a clinical psychiatrist - the material for this book came largely from his experiences with clients and others, seeing what worked and what didn't, what was missing and what was mis-understood. Often cases involved psychotherapy (talk therapy), but the processes here are not confined to therapists' offices. The same kinds of problem solving, processing and relationship building that takes place in psychotherapy can be used as life-long tools.

Peck resists labels such as Freudian and Jungian; he doesn't look for, nor does he offer, quick fixes or the psychotherapeutic variety of the get-rich-quick schemes. This book is not a therapy manual, but rather a guide to spiritual growth that incorporates therapeutic and psychological principles. Peck echoes the sentiments of many spiritual directors and leaders through the millennia that spiritual and personal growth are long journeys, not short leaps. It involves dedication and intention, and a willingness to accept risk and change.

Perhaps it is ironic that, given this, the first topic Peck focuses upon is Discipline. However, without discipline, change can go unchecked and uncharted, growth can become problematic, and the human soul becomes susceptible to a host of difficulties. Dedication and application to problem-solving and long-term building (whether it be of retirement funds or of one's own spirit) requires a disciplined approach that recognises that life is difficulty (the first of Buddha's Four Noble Truths, cited by Peck), gratification sometimes needs to be delayed for greater goods, and reality needs to be approached and dealt with responsibly.

Peck calls here for a life to be totally dedicated to the truth. This is hard, because we as human beings are so accustomed to rationalisation and reinterpretation. This kind of dedication also requires a balance in life, and an ability to be flexible as the truths of our lives change - few of us are in possession of timeless and eternal truths governing every aspect of our lives, and often those who feel they are end up disappointed in the end. The continuing creativity of God in our lives requires flexibility, but this is best achieved in a disciplined and balanced context.

Peck then turns to love, a mysterious thing even in the best of times. He identifies some of the myths of `falling in love' and romantic love that our culture through various means idealises, leading to great dissatisfaction when we do not achieve the desired feelings or situations. Peck makes the assertion that love is not really a feeling, but rather an action or activity, that involves a lot of risk-taking (Peck talks about risks of independence, of commitment, of confrontation, and of loss). True love requires discipline and recognition of the needs of the self and others.

The final two sections of the text deal with aspects of religion on the spiritual and psychological development of persons. The first section looks at religion and growth processes. He does a short survey of some attitudes toward religions and denominations, as well as a look at how the modern scientific mindset colours the worldview of modern people, particularly with ideas of verification and skepticism. Some psychologists and theorists have wondered if religion were mass delusions, mass psychosis, or some other kind of sickness. Peck uses interesting extended case studies here to examine the role of various aspects of religion in the developmental lives of several people. Peck asks the question, `Is belief in God a psychopathology?' In some aspects, and for some people, the way they approach and `use' religion, the answer may well be yes. However, Peck also takes the psychotherapeutic community to task for often being too narrow or too dismissive of the value of religious sentiment and institutions in the lives of their charges.

The final section looks at the role of grace in the spiritual growth process. Grace is another mysterious force, like love, that is difficult to pin down and explain. It is also something uncontrollable. Why do some with artistic talent end up being successful and celebrated, and others not? Why do some use their talent, when others don't? In cases of ultimate despair, Peck makes the observation that while it is often clear why some people commit suicide, it is not often clear why others in the same situations don't. Some of this has to do with the unconscious mind that guides us, and some of it has to do with the miracle of serendipity, as Peck describes it.

Peck describes in some detail his concept of what grace is and how it works, in very general terms that relate to no denomination or religion in particular, but has wide applicability. He talks both about resistance to grace and the welcoming of grace. Grace is not easy, and often comes with responsibilities (Bonhoeffer talks about cheap grace; the requirements of grace are noted through scriptures of many religions). Welcoming grace welcomes often more than we bargained for, but also often more than we hoped.

In his afterword, Peck discusses the difficulties of writing in an organised and linear fashion about something so fundamentally disorganised as spiritual growth and therapeutic processes. He also talks about the need for finding competent help when required - ability is not measured by degrees, he states (something true in many professions). This is useful for those seeking a first therapeutic relationship, or needing a change.

We are going through a major re-organization from push system manufacturing to pull manufacturing in our facility and throughout the company. This book fits in quite nicely with this endeavor. The book does a nice job of explaining concepts and implementation of the principles. It is easy to read. Additionally, it has forms for suggested use in organizing information, AND it explains the forms and how to use them. I am purchasing multiple copies for distribution to all of my Manufacturing Engineers. Too I am recommeding it for use throughout the company.

Though the title implies implementation, I see this more as an educational resource used to train both shop floor workers and management alike. Under this context, this book is outstanding.
Excellent diagrams, charts, and photos make understanding 5S, manufacturing cells, kanbans, and techniques for setup reduction easy.
In fact, the basic concepts behind lean manufacturing are simple. The problem with most lean manufacturing books is that the authors often complicate the subject to make themselves seem as though they are smarter and have something unique to add (when they really don't). This book keeps lean simple.
Great book.

For those who are serious about World Class Manufacturing activities on the shop floor, this book is a must-read. The authors have created a detailed, step-by-step guide filled with useful examples, forms, quotes, and stories.

This is a book that small and medium-sized manufacturers can use to develop in-house training materials for educating their workforce on the how-to's of WCM. The explanations are succint with simple and well-written examples, backed by the rich experience of the authors. Supplementary materials available from the authors would allow any Plant Manager to develop customized training materials specific to his/her shopfloor. A particular merit of this book is the that it recommends the sequence in which the various elements of a WCM manufacturing program ought to be taught/implemented for best results. I plan to recommend this book as a reference to undergraduates who co-op or intern at companies as part of their educational experience.

Unlike other books on "world class manufacturing" which are intended more for business school students and management theorists, this book really is a Shop Floor Manual as the title suggests. Each subject and technique is explained, application considerations are given, and real life "how-to" instructions are provided so that all concerned, from production worker to group leader and production manager, can easily understand and implement the technique in their company. Implementation of just one of the hundreds of world class manufacturing techniques covered will return the price of the book manyfold.

This is the best combination of practical and theoretical electrical engineering ever published - period. It covers both IEC and ANSI requirements in depth. It is now my working bible! You have to buy it to understand!

The material is cleverly keyed in to the recommendations of international standards organisations like ISO, IEEE, ANSI, BSI, DIN, IEC, etc.

One detailed flip-through leaves you convinced of the publisher's claim that "never before has so much ground been covered in a single volume reference source". Apart from doing yeomen's service to practising engineers, the author has done a great favour to teachers at technical institutes who have limited access to information from the Industry. Students will now not be deprived of this kind of information since teachers can always refer this excellent handbook to reply to questions raised in the classroom.

The production values of the book are excellent. Each page is lavishly illustrated with high quality drawings, graphs and photographs. The overall structuring of the book is excellent.

There is no capsule biography of the author anywhere in the book. For most readers Agrawal will remain only a name.

At the end of it all, the book emerges as a landmark achievement in its field. When you put it down, you cannot help wishing there were separate handbooks of identical character in the areas of transmission, distribution and utilization too.

An excellent book for combinatorial optimization. This book provides with the basis of the integer programming problems and theories behind it.

A great book, with whatever information you need regarding integer programming and Combinatorial Optimisation. A bit out of date perhaps!

I first used this book as a text for a graduate course in Integer Programming. At first it seemed to be a very poorly organized book, but as I read it and grew familiar with the subject, I realized that this is a hybrid textbook-handbook. Though the title says "Integer and Combinatorial", the authors go a step ahead and present topics in advanced linear programming, computational complexity, polyhedral theory in a fashion appropriate to the learning of this subject. The exercises are challenging and it has a very good list of references (only up to 1988). Our professor had to supplement the text with recent papers to cover the latest advances. My only complaint is that model formulation could have been dealt with in more detail. You might want to use HP Williams' "Model Building in Mathematical Programming" to look up good Math Prog models.
Though this is an excellent book in all respects, I would recommend Papadimitriou's older book on combinatorial optimization for a good discussion of P, NP problems and decision / optimization problems.

Nemhauser is a great professor and this book is text book for IP. But this book requires that you are familiar with Linear programming. So read this book only after you had LP. Bertsimas book is really good for Lp. Or even Bazaara's book is a goo start.

This book starts with the mathematical basics behind linear programming and develops on these introducing new techniques like Bender's decomposition, various cuts, etc. The way the mathematics is dealt is flawless but I thought the methods required more examples for better understanding. But ofcourse the book had to be concise....

I have no opinion on the combinatorial optimisation part.

Don't let the title fools you. This book goes beyond Integer and Combintarial optimization. While there are many books talk about NP and proof, this book makes you "understand" it! Still, I agree with others that this book is a reference tool for Integer and Combinatorial optimization. I'm so glad this book published in paperback so it will be more affordable for others.... still expensive though :(

In this distinctive text, author Ever Barbero focuses on the introduction to composite materials design and its fundamental concepts. The logical order of topic presentation on composites is a major strength of the text. The text is so well written that any engineering student can easy understand the fundamentals of composites without having prior knowledge of composites. Design content is distributed throughout the book in a form that attracts the reader into the design rather than the mathematical complexity that usually exists in mechanics of composites. This book would be my first choice to adopt to teach the fundamentals of composites to a class of mainly undergraduate students.

The author has achieved an excellent balance of depth and clarity in this relatively easy to follow book. The fundamental concepts of mechanics and elasticity, that are necessary for the explanation of the mechanics of fibrous composites, are presented in a very concise and clear manner so that students with standard background in mechanics can easily extend their knowledge from basic mechanics to the mechanics of composites. Yet, the book provides enough description and contents to help the student deal with practical problems in design.

Barbero's book is an excellent text of composite materials design and analysis for early graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

After using this text for 2 years, my students and I continue to be impressed with the book's organization, clear writing, good examples, and useful software.

This text provides a practical framework that can be applied equally well toward developing a thorough understanding of lamination theory or the fairly rapid application of this theory to advanced problems in composite materials design.

Introduction to composite materials design, by E. Barbero, is an
excellent first book on composites. After describing composites
and its fabrication it gives notions and up to date expressions
for micromechanics and describes lamination theory; The book has
information for the design of structural parts using composites
and a software for practical calculations.
I have used the book with several groups of students at the
master level with very good results.

This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer and the instructor. It is full of thoughtful and useful insights that I have not found in other texts.

The availability of free downloadable micromechanics and structural analysis software makes it unique.

I am impressed with the scope, which covers materials, manufacturing processes, micromechanics and behavior of plates and shells. There is a considerable amount of useful detail, such as types of stiffeners. In addition, it touches on important practical issues such as corrosion and flammability.

Each chapter has exercises and a significant list of references, making it a useful classroom text.

I highly recommend it....
