Ideas presented in this book, "The Art of Scientific Innovation: Cases of Classic Creativity", and taught by the author Professor Syed Ahamed in class are proven fruitful for many of his students including myself. The book actually leads "from realization of a concept to the development of a device intended to serve a commercial or social need". It helped a great deal to successfully finish my research on a subject (financial networks), defend my dissertation, implement my ideas in industry and keep working on a patent.
The broad audience of researchers will greatly benefit from this book.

Book Fills in the Gaps Left by Arbitrator Trainings
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-18
I first purchased and read Judge Goodman's Basic Skills For the New Arbitrator in 1994 when I began arbitrating. Having just finished reading the most recent edition, I am struck by the continuing usefulness of the detailed and practical advice contained in this book. While I have participated in arbitrator trainings over the years, they usually do not cover the nitty gritty "how to" issues this work addresses. These issues are easy to find as the Table of Contents is organized into sections devoted to each stage of an arbitration with an enumeration, under each heading, of all the questions addressed. Judge Goodman's style is clear and concise which makes the book a quick and easy read. It seems directed primarily at non-lawyers, but many lawyers, such as myself, will find in it their money's worth of advice. Personally, as much of my practice is devoted to mediation, I find reviewing the book helpful when I need to switch hats and assume a judicial (as opposed to a mediator's) demeanor. His advice in this regard, touching on body language, facial expression, and utterances, is invaluable in cultivating the proper persona of the neutral arbitrator. I highly recommend this thoughful, easy-to-read book to anyone who is starting to engage in arbitration and for those for whom it is not a weekly endeavor.

Exquisitely Cogent Primer

Mr. Goodman's book is the finest quick primer for a new arbitrator I have ever read. For virtually anyone familiar with any type of legal procedure or mediation, the book lays out the differences specific to Arbitration. Mr. Goodman has arranged the book, so that he presents the answers to the 100 most commonly asked questions about Arbitration.

The layout that he uses is in order of the Arbitration process, and thus, the questions and answers are in "as needed" sequence. This makes the book a very useful quick reference tool on all the major topics of the process of Arbitration.

The book is very highly recommended to attorneys, mediators and other legal professionals as a very compact and explicit guide and quick reference book about the procedures of Arbitration.

Two Thumbs Up For Judge Goodman's Book for New Arbitrators!

As a new volunteer arbitrator for my local bar association, I found Judge Goodman's book to be indispensable in acquiring the skills and expertise for this new task. His experience in this field are excellent and he uses this experience in a question and answer format which lends itself to an easy, but extremely effective format, for new, as well as experienced, arbitrators. His hints and tips give new arbitrators the guidance and confidence necessary to lead an effective, but expedient, arbitration. This is the number one book for those new to arbitration, or those needing a review of arbitration methods and techniques.

Good Information for Experienced Arbitrators, Too

As an experienced arbitrator, I am always looking for good information from those who actually are arbitrators. There are alot of books written by academics filled with theory and psychology, but this is a book by someone who obviously arbitrates for a living. As an arbitrator who is not an attorney, I found the information about dealing with attorneys, documents, objections and evidence quite helpful, as one can easily be intimidated by attorneys if they are involved in the process. The section on "Getting Paid" hit home. I too have had the experience of not getting paid by a party after the arbitration. The author's suggestion to hold the award until payment is received may sound harsh, but it certainly is sound business advice. The arrangement of the book as questions and answers, with the questions listed in the table of contents, makes this book easy to use as a quick reference. Definitely worth the price.

Basic Skills For The New Arbitrator

While this book provides some very good basic information, especially for a new arbitrator, some of Mr. Goodman's ideas are radically different from the practice of most main stream arbitrators. Certainly the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and the American Arbitration Association would disagree with Mr. Goodman's statement that "No reasons are given for the award" when a decision is rendered. I personally do not know any arbitrator who does not clearly state the basis for a decision/award. Also, it is not common practice, and certainly not good advice for a novice, to hold the rendered decision hostage until payment for the arbitration service is received. The author is addressing "basic skills" for new arbitrators and could mislead them in these and other opinions stated in this book which, incidentally, I believe is over-priced for its size and paper bound format.

The way this book is put togther is what leaves me feeling a bit ripped off. I feel the author and/or publisher owe me some money! At least one third of the book was copied over from manufacturer's free publications. If you want to read a list of available programming instructions contained within the language written about in the book just vist the mfg web site and save your money. And, Hex listings in the book! Give me a break! You can read what this book has to offer in under an hour! This book stinks...

Karl does a good job of leading you through the basic concepts of humaniod robotics in this well written, well annotated and very descriptive text on the subject. His detailed plans are easy to follow and his programs are well written and well explained throughout. He provides specific recommendations for parts as well as vendors and spends time explaining his choices. If you're interested in learning not only how to write useful PIC applications for robotics but also how to build robotics that implement those applications, then this is the book for you. This is a must have for your library of robotics books!

An amazing book for robotic beginners.

The most interesting part of this book is on its pratical topics. A lots of briliant ideas can be learned from this book, especially for those who would like to build up their first robotic project from scratch.

Things that need to be improved are on the materials used for the projects in this book. Less heavy duty tools required would be nice. The discussions should be more focussing on robotic sensors and control parts.

Great Collection!!!

First off I'd like to say that this is a great book if you want to learn how to build a robot from start to finish. I personally waited till I was done building the robotic arm to write this review. The book was easy to read, and understand, and took me through the process with ease. It lists everything you need, and even tells you where some parts can be ordered, although I wish it could of listed more specs, and suppliers. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to the clueless begginer because there were a couple of technical erros I found, but worked through. One of the errors was in the PCB artwork which caused an LED not to light in the test program. The book also says you can build it for under $300. I think I spent about $500. That's not including the pic programmer, software, Visual Basic, and tools. Which even though most of that isn't needed, you wouldn't really be learning much if you didn't have it. If you at least have the tools, I would say that with the software, and everything else that you should have for the project, it would cost in the neighborhood of $1,300. On the plus side you'll be able to build your next project for under $300 once you have the proper materials. Nobody said it would be cheap, so make sure you're serious. I'm already designing my own project with the knowledge I gained from building the arm.

Top Marks for this highly readable and clear intro to Voice over IP. The subject matter is dealt with in reasonable detail and the author achieves great clarity in explaining difficult technical concepts. He also delves a bit into the history and background which also helps to put the subject matter in context. He even adds a small example of how to go about dimensioning a VOIP network at the end of the book.

Aimed specifically at designers of public telecommunications networks, this easy to read book provides practical and useful hands-on information. Where necessary, topics are covered in great detail. For example, 120 pages are dedicated to H.323. Softswitch architecture and programming are covered, and 55 pages are devoted to discussing Quality of Service issues.

We believe this book to be an essential read, and recommend it highly.

Great book on VoIP, still emerging technology. It did a great job in explaining concepts related to QoS such as RSVP, DiffServ and MPLS. Right from basics such as IP, UDP, TCP and various coding techniques you will find great explanation to each and every item. If you are interested in knowing about VoIP or you if u wanna work on VoIP this is the ONLY book you need. There is very detailed and neat explanation related to MGCP, MEGACO, SS7 and SIP too. The only thing that i felt lacking is testing of voice quality both subjective and objective and how they could be done. No doubt in giving 5 *s to it, great job!

This book does a very good job of giving an introduction to the VoIP world. As a professional in the telecom domain, I found this book very useful. Application of VoIP to telco domain as in the case of softswitch architecture for backhaul and the QoS issues that carriers have to deal with is also well covered at a good amount of detail. The book also provides detailed discussion on the protocols. However, I skipped passed these sections and unable to comment if such material was covered well.

Overall - a very good book. Highly recommend it.

I serious think that I should not write this review since I do not understand half of this book, but then again, I have read this and also Cisco Intergrated Voice Data and can in some way be a poor/insufficient abeit enthusastic tour guide. I have noticed other reviewers describing this book as great - but I do not think this book is comparable to monumental classic like Jeff Doyle or Kennedy Clarks books on Routing and Switching - where they display in-depth knowledge on the topic plus an ability to explain thing in the clearest possible way. I rate this book 5 stars for the sole reason that the author do appear to have an overwhelming knowledge of computer telephony - although I cannot quite judge whether they are technically accurate or error free - and has taken his valueable time off to write them down and share with us. While the author definitely has the kindest intention of making it "understanable" to even the not-so-technically-advance group of reader - as is evidenced in the way he start off this book by explaining why bother with IP telephony, and why TCP/IP is inherently unsuitable for IP telephony - I suspect that when it come to harder topics like H.323, SIP etc - there is simply no way or no time to find a more reader friendly way to present it. In the end it is a tough read - so tough that I will have to put it aside for a while as you need to be in the highest state or mental agility and strength to make hard yakka through the book. Nevertheless, this book is a useful reference - and for topics that this author decide not to include - check out Cisco's Integrated Voice and Data.

This book was not intended as a communication theory text, but it does a great job of providing the basic results in an organized fashion. It serves as a good reference for me for CDMA related issues, or channel models and fading/diversity analysis.

Definitely recommend the book if you can find one at a decent price. Five stars is granted for the reference use of this book, this should not be a first timers' textbook.

Artech House books are usually packed with errors, since there is no serious review process. But refreshingly this book does not come with a big pack of errata despite the large content. Congradulations to the authors...

This book is a very complete explanation of spread spectrum technics. The book is centered in IS-95 standard, but the detail in every subject makes it useful for other standards, like WCDMA and CDMA2000. After reading this book i feel that i can handle any spreading and codification technic. To get 3G to the real world, we need to handle the most inner principles of technology. With this book we have and excelent presentation of this principles, for the present and the future.

This book not only clearly presents the CDMA/spread spectrum theories, but also structurally analyzes the reasons behind IS-95 standard from the system design perspective. As pointed by the other readers, this book is self-contained. However, if you already had a decent communications engineering background, you might find some parts of book are redundant.

HIGHLY recommended!! A perfect CDMA book for both newbie and guru.

Susan Sully's book revived many delightful memories of my recent visit to Charleston. Her evocative prose paired with the beautiful photographs made as much of an impression on me as seeing Charleston's gracious architecture in person. It's not often that such a pretty book is also so well written, but Sully' elegant, beautifully crafted sentences do justice to the photos and the grand old homes themselves. Praised in House Beautiful (May '99) for author Susan Sully's "evocative text [that] lifts this book a notch above many similar style books," Charleston Style was listed by The State newspaper from Columbia, SC as one of the top ten books by or about South Carolinians published in 1999. The State's reviewer, William Starr praises the book's "uncommonly attractive" appearance and notes that "the author combines valuable information with an artistic sensibility.... Among the book's virtues is Sully's willingness to look beyond the obvious into homes which give us some very different views of this most traditional of historic cities."

Despite author Susan Sully's grammatical errors, misspellings ("sheathes of wheat" instead of sheaves of wheat -- why, oh, why don't editors catch those anymore?), labored metaphors, and use of cliche' ("dripping with spanish moss"), I loved this book. Josephine Humphreys writes a beautiful and moving foreward. The photos (by John Blais) are literally breath-taking (to borrow another cliche'). Imperative reading for the student of architecture or design, or for those simply enamored of regional style.

As a Charlestonian, I was introduced to places I never knew existed. The detailed photographs, artistic and architectural, complement the text. I bought numerous copies to give to friends who have visited Charleston in reality or in their dreams.

In my opinion, this is the best book I have read in all my engineering life. The beauty of this book is in the author's ability to exactly understand what the students difficulties could possibly be and also help in removing the difficulties. NOBODY must read any other cryptic CFD book before he ventures into this superlative text. While reading this book I had a feeling of some professor standing in front of me, teaching with love in a simple and clear language. Believe me, you can finish the entire book in one sitting if you have some background in Fluid dynamics since it is downright clear, conveying and interesting.

I personally have not found a teacher better than this book.

I am presently in my 4th year of a PhD in Astrophysics. While my background in the analytic portion of Fluid Dynamics is strong my understanding of how one discretizes and solves these equations numerically is somewhat lacking.

I picked this book up as a starting point to more complicated methods and found it to be, hands down, one of the best texts I have ever read. It presents the material in a concise, clear, and physically motivated fashion which makes learning the topic incredibly straightforward.

While this book is only a 'kicking off' point for more advanced techniques I think it is a must read for beginners and intermediate users. For the first timer to CFD the book will get you started down the right path armed with all the preliminary tools. For the more advanced user it will put aspects of the topic into an easier to understand light and perhaps shed more light on fundamentals that were presented poorly elsewhere.

I'd give it ten stars, it's allowed me to crack into the code I'm using and really understand why it works as well as having set me down the path to a more advanced level of understanding of CFD.

Politicizing design

Papanek, like his mentor Fuller, took on a guru like status where rhetoric became more important than the reality. He bends facts and contradicts himself several places in this book.

Here are a few that jumped out at me

Misrepresentation of the facts -

Page 89 - The Hyatt collapse wasn't bad design rather the builder changed the construction and inspectors weren't doing their job.

281 - He talks about farm implement companies' negative reaction to his walking tractor proposal. Troy-Bilt Rototiller has around since 1937, was and is building a 10 HP tiller very similar to the one pictured.

Contradicts himself -

Page 6 he says, "Design must be meaningful. And meaningful replaces such semantically loaded expressions as ... "ugly"... "cute"...

Page 93 - he describes gum as "tawdry

Page 246 - He asserts that humidifiers are bad because they are "costly, ugly, and ... wasteful of water"

Granted there are a lot of dangerous, overpriced, impractical, and generally unnecessary products on the market, but except for ranting about what he considers to be wrong, he doesn't offer much in terms of direction to others who want to be socially responsible.

An inspiring book on environmental design

Review Date: 2004-02-22
I first heard a lecture by Victor Papanek about 20 years ago, shortly before this revised edition was released. He was a very impressive speaker, drawing from a seemingly bottomless well of ecological design ideas. His work has taken him far and wide and in the process allowed him to revamp many of his views on environmental design. This book is an extensively updated version of his seminal book on the subject. It has become a bit dated in the 20 years since its release, especially in regard to computer software design. But, most of the material he covers is still relavent to the present, as we have only begun to scratch the surface of sound ecological ideas.

Having read the more recent books on ecological design by Sim Van Der Ryn and William McDonough, I was surprised to see that neither mentioned Papanek, who prefigured many of the ideas they present in their current books. Papanek long ago advocated the lease/use principle, which makes much more sense in a rapidly changing technological world than does the buy/own principle that continues to dominate our social thinking. Papanek notes the many cultural and psychological blocks we have created for ourselves when it comes to ecological design, but also illustrates how we can overcome these blocks with methods such as bisociation, first proposed by Arthur Koestler. But, what really makes this book stand out are the great number of illustrations that Papanek uses to demonstrate his ideas. This is one of the most practical books written on environmental design.

While Papanek was an industrial designer, his ideas are equally germaine to the field of architecture and biology. He advocated a multi-disciplinary approach, feeling that our universities had become too compartimentalized and were stifling creativity, which needs cross-pollination in order to thrive. The book is as inpiring as his lectures. Papanek challenges the reader to explore new avenues, not continue to follow the status quo, which only results in creative dead-ends.

I first spotted this book while studying in Denmark last year, where my host parents had studied under Victor Papanek. I would have studied under him at the University of Kansas, if not for his untimely and unfortunate passing. This book is one of the best books on the principles and ethics of design. It illustrates both the designer's responsibility and the potential to affect real change in the world through design. This most renowned of works by Papanek focuses on industrial design in two parts: How It Is, and How It Could Be. Papanek encourages radical thinking in design, and most of the topics in the book are easily translated to architecture. To my knowledge, reading this book has never been a required part of the core curriculum at the School of Architecture and Urban Design here at KU, but in my opinion, it should be.

It has been many years since I read this important book. I hope this book will be made a compulsory read for all design students. If only more designers would adopt Mr Papanek's approach to socially-responsible design, the world will be a much better place to live in.

What a great book! The presentation of multiple styles definitely caught my eye as I fanned through the book the first time; I was hooked! The introduction is very well written, and each page thereafter imparts a wealth of information that is simply a joy to read.

I love "power" words - single words that encompass my thoughts and feelings - and kanji characters are a beautiful way to express them. I found 'Designing with Kanji' in my effort to design my next tattoo. When I did not find exactly what I was looking for in the book, I contacted Leza and she promptly responded with the characters I needed. Great book - great woman!

I have been an admirer for Oriental Culture, and willing to understand Chinesse and Japanese writing. This book is an excellent source which explains a lot of Kanji symbols, and has several notes about interesting facts about it. I recommend it to all people looking to introduce themselves into this enigmatic and wonderful language.

Easy to read, follow, and use right away. Shows formal, modern, flowing, and stylish character sets. Describes the root, meaning, and nature of common Japanese words and phrases. The calligraphy is excellent. I only wish it was longer and more encompassing. Among other things I use this book as a supplement to Write Your Name in Kanji text by Nobuo Sato to write the characters more elegantly.

We had recently seen "The Last Samuri" so I was in the frame of mind to learn more about Japanese history and culture. I found this book on the Breakfast table one recent morning. The introduction and explanation of Kanji was clear and concise. This book provided a great beginning to the subject of how a culture influenced a language and how a language influenced a culture. I couldn't put it down for an hour or so. I'll refer to it often.

Another great tactical manual

I think that John Poole set a good example for us all to follow.
If we all were as productive and current in our analysis, and furthermore managed to put out tactical and technical advice to our troops in the field, the current conflicts would end sooner with much less casualties.

But wait, we don't need to do that. Because John Poole does this for us. We only need to pick up his latest book and start to apply the tactics that he describes.

I think that John Poole's later books are improving in readability but they still keep that cutting edge of current and life saving advice.

I urge you all to pick up this book and learn.

Another hit for military reading lists

We need to submit this brilliant book to the Army Chief of Staff's and Marine Corps Commandant's reading lists! John Poole has marked himself as an authority on 4GW, but more specifically and importantly, how to prepare our leaders and units for unconventional tactics which is subset, yet important one, of 4GW. In my day job as a consultant to the U.S. Army on leader development, I get to stay in touch with "the field," leaders that are engaged in this 4th GW struggle, and the ones that have discovered John's Dragon Days (as well as the other titles) have nothing but praise for how it assisted them and their units. I wish we could find a way for the next President to have a session with John Poole on warfare.

Author, John Poole contacted me about his book Dragon Days which rekindled my interest in reviewing. In the past I reviewed one of John Poole's books previously and found his research is very in depth and to the point. Dragon Days is divided into two main sections; the first is about the Chinese and their activities and connections with multiple terrorist groups. The second part discusses in depth the tactics needed to defeat the terrorist groups.
The Chinese have made a mark in this country. One need only pick up an item and it will probably say, "Made in China." What do China and a variety of terrorist groups have connecting them? The answer is China's need for oil and raw materials to maintain their economy and routes to get the supplies shipped to mainland China. China's deals to support the terrorist groups are absolutely amazing. I do not have the space to list all the terrorist groups here; Dragon Days does a great job. The reader will have his eyes opened when you see all the pieces of this Chinese puzzle come together. If one thinks China is not a threat to the United States look at oil prices which are driven up in part by China buying more oil.
The second chapter I found the most interesting is how to fight the terrorist. The United States military has been designed to fight the next global war. The current war in Iraq and future wars will not be big battles but small unit actions. John Poole points out the military have to get out of their vehicles and secure each town one at a time. The author uses illustrations and describes at length how to take control of an area. Urban warfare has many components. The enemy can hide underground in the sewers, on the street level or go fight from top of the buildings. Remember, when Saddam's army melted away from the United States Army and Marines. They accomplished this by throwing away their uniforms and blending back into the city. Urban warfare is the most dangerous and difficult to train for and conduct. Fortunately, Dragon Days points out how to operate in an urban warfare.
Fighting the terrorist in Iraq, Poole points out is more like police work than a military operation. I was somewhat surprised at that until I read further. Poole explains it by talking about interrogation of the suspects, examining a crime scene for evidence, and getting to know the local population. The key is to maintain a presence in the town to build on and with that comes trust and peace.
The United States is always in hurry to get a military action completed, unlike the Chinese and most of the world. Time is on the side of our enemy and they are aware of it. The enemy knows that the longer war drags on in Iraq the sooner people in the United States will want it over with. The author shows how to take the fight to the enemy and use our strengths. John Poole stresses the United States military has to be more unconvential in its tactics.
Dragon Days is an eye opener and it takes a while to sink for the information presented but when it does the reader won't look at Made in China the same. I highly recommend the book.

I am an infantry officer currently serving on my second tour in Iraq. Dragon Days provides a lot of new and useful information to American Soldiers and decision makers. Using his proven, effective formula, Mr. Poole beings his analysis at the strategic level and works his way down to tactical details. At the strategic level, his estimates and conclusions about the sources of contemporary conflict are disturbing, especially because they are well supported by research and fact. His tactical lessons provide a practical solution to many of the strategic problems he identifies. First, he focuses on developing a new, westernized version of sapper reconnaissance, and then goes into great detail about escape and evasion techniques for both rural and urban environments. Such techniques could prove very valuable to infantry units in the future. Dragon days is already having a positive effect on the soldiers in my unit.

You Need To Think Asymmetric If You Are Going To Fight Asymmetric

"Dragon Days" presents readers an alternative perspective regarding the war on terrorism, it's actors and supporting agents.

Most important, the author offers readers preparing to deploy to Afghanistan, or other theaters where these threats may exist, interesting geo-political perspectives that cannot be presented by intelligence or diplomatic communities due to the potential impact on organizational and national politics. This is not to say that our government is not telling U.S. citizens the truth, or that it is wrong, but the author is able to present his findings w/out the concern of organizational or political blow-back.

Of greatest value are Poole's tactical insights. Poole has presented tactical insights in his past books, such as "The Tiger's Way" (2003, the year the fight in Iraq kicked off) regarding the importance of light infantry tactics in Iraq in lieu of heavy handed artillery barrages, often falling on deaf ears while simultaneously isolating the Coalition from the local population...it is the local population who is truly responsible for turning the tide against the terrorists in Iraq despite what the media and government sources convey.

So, be open-minded and look beyond what the news, media or what confusing watered-down national level reporting says and go outside the box. Staying inside the box keeps one symmetric; this is what our enemies want. Thinking Poole's way takes the reader into the blurry ever-changing world of asymmetry.
