A godsend to inexperienced woodworkers!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-13
This book is a collection of 13 projects (small cupboard, blanket chest, box planter, country bookcase, storage step stool, window box, small sideboard, Adirondack chair, Adirondack table, Adirondack ottoman, picket planter, plate rack, and message center); complete with plans, supply list, and step-by-step instructions with color(!) photographs. Also included are chapters on choosing lumber, choosing tools, construction techniques, and finishing ideas.

This wonderful book is a godsend to inexperienced woodworkers! The basic idea behind this book is projects that can be made with a minimum of skills and power tools - which includes using lumber that does not need to be resized for the project. This is a great book.

Riddled with many errors

I bought the book for the Adirondack set plans (Chair, ottoman, and table) and while the finish product is very nice and I am very pleased with it, the plans are full of errors. Cut lengths are not listed right for legs, the plans call for 1X6 stock when it should have been 1X4, etc.

Plans and instructions for making 14 furniture projects
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-13
Fourteen plans for large furniture projects with full diagrams, step-by-step instructions, cutting lists and bills of materials.

This book covers storage items, tables, chairs, desks and outdoor furniture. Skill levels range from experienced beginner to intermediate woodworker.

If you like to build furniture, get this book. The book price is less than most plans for one piece of furniture, let alone fourteen.

High quality but very dated

I am a longtime subscriber to BH&G Wood magazine, so its no surprise that I appreciate the high quality plans contained in this book. The 14 projects are broken into three sections: Storage Units; Tables, Chairs, and Desks; and Outdoor Furniture.

Everything you need to know to build these projects is clearly explained and well illustrated. The only drawback for me as a woodworker is that most of these projects have a distictly dated feel to them, with most of the pieces looking like contemporary furniture from the late 1970s and early 1980s. The exception would be that the outdoor furniture projects are of more classic designs and thus will not go out of style.

Overall this is a high quality book that suffers only this one flaw.

A little dated...

The project instructions were clear and easy; tells you exactly what you need to make project. And what sizes to have the wood cut. But the projects were a little dated and plain even though this wasn't published that long ago. All in the same wood color, very basic styles. I'll make the bookscases, but would like to have seen them with trim on the front and maybe some moulding on the top and painted in a nice color or black. I think this just needs an update to current styles. Kitchen Island quite boxy, etc.

Better than Ikea!

This, along with three other books I have, give you everything you need to really furnish your house. I love this stuff. Can't wait to make that buffet, china hutch, and a handful of other things. I've always wanted to do this kind of thing, after watching my Dad do it for many years, and now I can.

Inspirational and Educational Woodworker's Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This is the best woodworker's book I have ever read. Moser steps back and provides the best combination of a practical, historical, analytical, and philosophical reflection of woodworking and architectural styles. I had never realized the influences of furniture sytles throughout history and around the globe. Moser explains the relationship of the styles of Frank Lloyd Wright, Japanese styles, Greene & Greene, Arts and Crafts, Nakashima, Bauhaus, Wegner, et al. He very nicely explains the differences between the practical and theortical aspects of creating the idea and then delivering the final product. I personally liked Moser's sharing of his personal experiences and his transition from student, educator, craftsman and businessman. Moser is obviously very intelligent and can then synthesize all that I have mentioned above. Further, the book has some of the best photography I have ever seen in a woodworker's book. Thank you Thomas Moser for taking the time to write and produce this book.

Short on advice - long on gorgeous pictures

I've followed Moser's name as a woodworker since way back in the early days of a black-and-white Fine Woodworking magazine. At the time I was a struggling woodworker who was a bit amazed (and a bit jealous) at how Moser was able to build such a successful business. This book documents that rise and examines how the company functions today with Moser in a more administrative role. It's a book as much about a company as it is about a person.

Frankly I don't think there's much of a mass appeal to the story of the rise of T. Moser Cabinetmakers but I will say that the book is filled front to back with photos of some of the most beautiful furniture there is. This will make a great addition to any woodworker's library or to any coffee table. It's certainly a book that you want to thumb through. It's kind of a book for the choir and if you're in the choir you'll likely love it.

This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.

This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

John Brown happened upon The Welsh Stick Chair by chance; perhaps divine chance. The book is a true inspiration. General dimensions are given in the text but more detailed info can be gotten by using Drew Langsner's " The Chairmaker's Workshop". This book should be looked at as importantly as detailed plans but enjoyed from a romantic view point. I recommend this book to all woodworkers.

John Brown gives an excellent introduction on the history of Welsh stick chairs. He also expounds at length on the merits of handcrafed versus machine made products, and gives credit to past practioners in the art of making stick chairs. The book falls short on detailed explanations of making a stick chair. For that one should read Drew Langsner's The Chairmaker's Workshop. The two complement one another. Ernie Kleinman. This book in not as easy to use as I would like. In some cases the information is embedded in personal stories and doesn't get to the point fast enough. There s/b more illustrations and step-by-step procedures. On the positive side, he offers many possibilities for solving your finishing problems.

Great book.

This book has a few new ideas but mostly is a rehash of standard storage solutions. I consider it just adequate though it might be more useful for someone who has never read anything about storage solutions.

Introduces process and principles into the art of design
Helpful Votes: 68 out of 71 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-02
An excellent book which has earned a spot over my drawing table. Superbly covers form/function, visualization, standardized (ergo) vs. personalized design, and construction principles. Covers drawing, drafting and CAD well. Includes a brief history of furniture.

The math is suited for the drawing table rather than the shop, as you should expect for a design book. The hows and whys of design principles are explored, some not as conclusively as I'd like.

The book is well illustrated with many relavent line drawings, charts, and graphs. It is nicely laid out, easy to read, and pleasing to look at.

Nice job, Mr. Graves!

This is an excellent book for the history of style, proportions, and ergonomics. It is especially useful for the cabinetmaker who is custom designing furniture. The golden section (golden rectangle) is covered in the most precise detail I have ever seen. The tables and charts are extremely helpful in the design stage of any project. If you design furniture, you'll definitely want this book in your library.
