I purchased this book in 1978. I have made several of the pieces described in the book by using the measured drawings. I made the "hutch-table chair out of Butternut and several other pieces out of Cherry. I cannot tell you how valuable the book is to a cabinet maker. It shows a picture of the piece and then the blueprints. It also describes the old fashioned joinery used. I have personally kiln dried 200 million feet of hardwoods by conventional forced hot air and also ran a "Vacu-Therm" dry kiln system. I also supervised a planning mill with planers, rip saws. band rip saws, straight-line rip saws, moulders, table saws, and end-trimmers. In my 30 years of hardwood background I have never seen a more useful book than this one.

I don't know why I like this book so much, but I do.

It's a photo gallery of beautiful tables, with reasonably detailed instructions on how to make each of them. Some are very simple, others too complex for this weekend warrior, but all are fun to view and the different styles used in their construction.

Buy the book, it's worth it if for no other reason than sheer inspiration.

Beginner Woodworkers take note!

Country wood furniture is for this writer the epitome of form following function. This formula is presented by Mr. Buchannan in a beautiful and straight forward mannner. As a beginner in wood furniture construction, plans and techniques that can be understood and immediately applied are enabling and appreciated. Even the seemingly grand projects such as the Kneehole Desk are largely simple cuts for the structural pieces and a repeated simple creation for the drawers combined in a most elegant design. The photograhy by Mr Buchanan, Tony Boase and Jennie Brech present the pieces as well as leaving one feeling as if the portal into the centering world of country living has been opened.
The average do it yourself reader of this book will likely use power tools more than Mr. Buchanan has in his projects but as the plans are simple and well illustrated this difference will be easily handled and leave one feeling that a piece of truely unique furniture has been wrought from the earth.

This book had very creative and unique ideas. It's just what I was looking for! The pictures were a great help and gave a good visual aid on how to use the projects. The instructions were very clear and having the per centages on how to enlarge patterns was great.

I can't say enough good things about this book. Howes, the author, has written an easy to understand and easy to follow book that includes all types of decorative screens.

First, Howes describes the basic instructions for each type of screen. Howes shows how to create frame screens and solid panel screens. Then, she gives instructions and materials for particular projects, as well as how long it should typically take to finish each project. Howes includes various design styles for each type of screen. Plus, you can easily make your own projects using the author's basic instructions. She also includes patterns you can blow up to create the unique shape of each screen.

Some sample projects are a country style frame screen made with gingham and chicken wire, an upholstered solid panel screen, a music score solid panel screen, which has the shape of an old music stand and is painted and decoupaged.

I have been looking for a while for a book like this one on making decorative screens. Let me save you the trouble. Buy this book!
