The Best Wicker Repair Book on the Market-Ever!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-23
Thomas Duncan outdid himself when he wrote this difinitive book on wicker furniture repair several years ago! It is the only book on the market that covers in great detail, how to repair all types of wicker furniture.

With clear photographs and concise text, each and every step is covered that the wicker repair specialist might encounter. There are also many, many instances of woodworking problems with solutions that I found expecially helpful.

From simple pairing, twining and arrow weave to the more difficult serpentine arm and back weaving, Tom covers it all, even down to making the most difficult reed "curliques"! He also goes to great lengths dealing with stripping and paint and varnish finishing techniques.

Run right out and purchase this terrific book to add to your reference library, you'll be glad you did.

Build your own modern furniture...

What can I say? This pack of drawings and instructions is excellent. I'm a big Reitveld fan, and previously built a red-blue, but without a measured drawing, my proportions were a bit off. This book set me straight, saving a lot of time measuring off of pictures.

After I bought the book, I built a Zig-Zag, and I'm planning to try one of his laminated steel-tube chairs as well.

Great reference, some hard-to-find information in here too.

Want to see the original drawings for the Red-Blue Chair? Or find a little-known fact about one of designs of Gerrit Rietveld that normally would require examination of an original or a long conversation with someone from Christies? And then, maybe, actually build the piece yourself? This is the book to get. It's not enclyclopedic, though, so make sure that what you are interested in is present in the 50-or-so works here. Also has some terrific old photographs of the workshop, original installations, lines, and advertising.

I thought the book was great for decorating my kids bedrooms
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-07
It was great because the kids and i had lots of fun doing it together. Some of the things they altered from the book (i.e- colors and patterns). They enjoyed getting to chose the way they wanted there bedroom to look. My three 11 year old daughters made their rooms look dreamy with soft colors and glitters and sparkles everywhere. My two sons prefered a more personalized look. One liking sports, combined pictures paterns and colors to form a very upbeat and active setting. The other, prefered to be on the computer. He decorated his room with wall paint, and wires and lots of other high tech things. Take in mind none of this was the least bit hazardous. My house turned out to be a place where the kids liked to be and just plain comfortable, a place to relax.

Excellent guide to classical style, for the furnituremakers
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-26
If you are some experienced in furniture making and know the basics of joinery, carving and usage of woodworking tools, this book will give you lots of good ideas for your projects. It contains some plans also, but there are only the most demanding phases experienced, those things, which are typical and special for the furniture of that period.

The book contains lot's of history and information about 18th century styles and methods. The most remarkable details of the book are instructions for carving chippendale ball and claw foot, very good information about hardware and lumber, how to make ogee bracket feet and very detailed veneering art (inlays and marquetry). The great book with great photos for experienced woodworkers, who appreciate the antique and old 18th century style.

A Visit to Germany thru words
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-23
This book has taken me to germany where my ancestors came from. I myself have never been there but the author Kathleen Saal makes you feel like you have visited in the time period of our great grandparents. It is obvious that the Author has done alot of research for this book. She brought to life a time period of simpler times and showed us some fabulous German traditions. Learning about Berta Hummel's Homeland is inspiring to all who collect Hummels. The craftsmanship in Germany from the Hummels, to the Wood boxes and Wooden Creche are very refreshing in this day and age of mass production. I highly recommend this book to not only those who collect Hummels but also those who are from Germany or share roots there. I'm sure Kathleen Saal will tell even German people about traditions in Germany they didn't even know about.
