In "Making Heirloom Boxes" Lloyd focuses in on several of his characteristic works and takes a deep dive in the making of each one. While I don't always 'like' what Lloyd does, his integrity of design and approach are admirable. As you dig into his processes you get glimpses of the mind behind than. In the end you get both a set of advanced lessons in box making, and a good study of what it means to be an artist and craftsman.
Despite Lloyd's comfortable writing style, I found myself in difficulties a few times due to subtle differences in language use. Occasionally you will find yourself staring at a sentence or the title of a photograph with no immediate clue of what is going on. It takes a bit of study and contemplation before all becomes clear. There is an accidental benefit to this, because the reader is forced to think out the work, which is something we do all to rarely.
This is also an excellent study of one man's workshop, one that came into being slowly and makes use of 'found' or made tools, rather than the more common habit of equipping a workshop with a lot of expensive gear. On several occasions Lloyd will be describing how he sets up to do one thing or another and you will find yourself amazed at the lengths Lloyd will actually go to not have a $1500 router table. I can't say that I blame him in the least - I'll be paying for my workshop all the way into my next life.
Taken in all this is an excellent look at the philosophy, style, and processes of one of box making's shining stars. Something of a practical autobiography. I didn't any brilliant design ideas from it simply because Lloyd's style is very individual. But I picked up a lot of little clues that will help me work out my own style.

A nice variety of information about the English styleReview Date: 2000-02-21
Very TRADITIONAL English decorating bookReview Date: 2007-08-06
I own two other books by this outstanding author (Cheryl MacLachlan) and she always does such a nice job at taking readers into the world of European decorating, by showing a variety of homes in the various styles... as stated in the book's title.
If you own any of the Henrietta Churchill's books (ie: her books on decorating a 'la "English classical style") then you are probably familiar with Classical/Traditional English decorating. If not, browse through this book and/or Henrietta's many decorating books, and you will understand the English "classical" style a bit better.
One difference: The homes in this MacLachlan book are homes that are probably owned by middle-class English families, and are NOT owned by upper-class English families , --- such as all of Henrietta's books show. Therefore, if you want to decorate your home in English style, then this MacLachlan book is more doable & relavent to you. Personally, I like both author's books (MacLachlan's and Churchill's books) because together they show all the possibilities when incorporating Classical English decorating in your current home(s).

My bedtime ritual now includes sitting down with a steaming cup of tea while browsing through every page of this book. After collecting and borrowing dozens of books on this topic, I find this one to be the most comprehensive and inspiring resource for the lover of anything English.
"Like a house, Bringing It Home - England is divided into rooms"...The book's chapters cover the following topics:
(1) The Substance of the English Style: common threads that unite all English homes, walls, motifs, graphics and everything out of the ordinary
(2) The Living Room: how to arrange furniture, select fabrics, and my favorite topic: how to create the look of a traditional English drawing room
(3) The Bedroom: creating a "cozy sanctuary", creating the romantic look (I can attest to the fact that her advice in this section works beautifully!), how to create the English look in your bath, and there is even a section on creating the look in a nursery!
(4) The Dining Room: special emphasis on creating a "tailored, handsome" look. Includes information on English china, porcelain and crystal. There is even a guide to selecting tables and chairs.
(5) The Garden: No book about English style would be complete without information on creating a traditional English garden. Includes a primer on the art of flower arrangement.
)6) The Kitchen: The floors, cabines, furnishings and "cooker" are all covered in this section as well as my very favorite subject on the pleasure of "taking tea". Oh, life is grand!!!!
(7) A Resource section which includes information on all the "English-style" essentials and where to find them. Includes a reading list and travel ideas.
The information is practical and inspiring, as are the beautiful photographs. I feel this is the best book on this topic anywhere.
5 Stars. Enjoy.

I wouldn't clasify this book as a beginer book, nor would I say it's an advanced book. However it does have something for everybody, and it's very easy to follow.
Personally I think that every beginer wanting to do more than plywood boxes should pick up a copy. It starts you out with basics of a router (good to read before you buy one, though not diffinitive in that area).
This book really shines with all the stuff that a beginer doesn't know to worry about - how different boards are sawn from the log, and how that effects the way that they shrink/expand. How to plan your project so that the changing seasons do not cause it to self destruct. While this sounds out of the scope for a beginer - it is very easy to understand and will help anybody (short of a seasoned pro) get the most out of their work. And this is all before the basics of joining wood.
When it comes to the different joints the book is layed out from easiest to most complex. You can work to the back of the book as your skill and knowledge improve.
Everybody should have it, and beginers should not feel intimidated by it!

On a personal note I had a lady call me years ago to fix up `some old furniture' she and her husband had bought years ago (in the `50's I believe.) Seems when they were young college professors they found this young oriental guy down the road who made furniture in his garage. When I looked at the furniture I told her that her young oriental friend had become quite famous and showed her this book. She was flabbergasted. What she wanted me to do was to nail up some chairs that had worked loose over time. I refused, of course, and explained to her that these were valuable pieces that should be cared for properly. I also encouraged her to contact Nakashima's Conoid Studio (if it still existed) to let them catalogue the pieces. Even after years of use by a family with kids living in the sticks the pieces were obviously crafted with meticulous care and held up surprisingly well. It was a real joy to bring them back to daily use.

The boxes range from a tea box recovered from the harbor at the Boston Tea Party to HO Studley's over-the-top tool chest to a standard GI foot locker.
The book is well-organized. There is little wood working technique described so if you are looking for a how-to book, this ain't the book for you. However, the author briefly describes uncommon techniques such as lapstrake construction (common in shipbuilding but almost unheard of in furniture making).

The instruction and detail of the book were very good but I found many of them just plain odd looking.
Might just be my idea of what a Heirloom box should look like.
