A complex but invaluable study of l8thC furniture manufactur
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-13
Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice furniture historian, nor to a novice collector, for the more experienced student of l8thC furniture history this book is an invaluable source of information seldom, if ever, published in one volume before. The format of the book allows research by subject alone (e.g. material and techniques) if, like me, you find the text rather too dry and heavy going to be a steady read. I would suggest that no serious library of furniture history will be complete without this volume.

Elie Nadelman: A Great American Artist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-06
This book which was originally the accompanying catalogue to Elie Nadelman's 2003 retrospective exhibition at The Whitney Museum is a treasure trove of new and revelatory imformation on a great American artist. Forgotten? No. Under-rated or not well known enough? Yes! This is the first really comprehensive study of the amazingly varied artwork and life of Elie Nadelman since the well written but slightly over-stuffed bio on the artist written by his original biographer/historian, the always quirky and self-absorbed Lincoln Kirstein.

In this thankfully easier to read book on Nadelman by Whitney curator Barbara Haskell we get a much more intimate idea as to the life and working influences of Nadelman. Unlike Kirstein's book, there is a consise way to Haskell's writing which invites the reader into the artist's life and puts you right where the action is, which is exactly where Elie Nadelman was as an artist in the early decades of the 20th Century. Not as popular a figure as he should be in the art-world this tome to a great American artist fulfills what even the artist himself never did. It solidifies Elie Nadelman as one of the greats !

This book motivated me to get out my paint and brushes and try some of the ideas on a few of the drab pieces of furniture I had planned to yard sale. They now are focal points in my home. The ideas in this book are well presented in pictures and how-to discriptions. I highly recommend this book if you are needing a jumpstart for your imagination.

Well, here is another great book by Emyl Jenkins! She covers in detail the history of American reproduction furniture from the 1850s through the 1920s. The chapters give detail descriptions of the various periods of furniture design and instruct the reader in how to determine good and bad design. A great book that is well worth buying.

A Real Update Using Extensive Research
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-06
This book is for those who are really into this era of high style early English furniture. The scholarship and reseach of many sources not extensivly used before has updated the chronology of this era. This research and the resulting book has laid to rest many earlier misconceptions used to date this furniture. A book that really adds to the knowledge base.

Some may be a bit nervous with this updating but it is based on real reseach and therefore is a good read for those who really love these styles of English furniture.

I needed a thorough reference to complete an appraisal on 2 19th century Perry & Co. chandeliers. The pictures were gorgeous. The history is very thorough and the chapters on Types of Lighting and Restoration were very helpful. I think I know why chandelier designers and restoration specialists call this the "Bible".

The authoritative guide to english regional chairmaking.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-20
This superb reference volume examines the English regional chair (particularly windsor and ladderback types) as a vernacular tradition of craft and design. It is more comprehensive than any other book ever written on antique furniture. A work of the very highest calibre by a most respected, insightful and dedicated scholar. Study in this field, often inspired by this extraordinary work, is still continued with great enthusiasm. It simply cannot be bettered!
