Furniture Books

This is great book, of course I have a bias , since the author is my late father. The book was written several years ago, but the art of making miniatures by hand has not changed in the past twenty years. The skill level and tools used have not changed. Buy this one if you are a handy, crafty person. Good luck

This book, originally published in the early 1960's quickly became the "bible" to those interested in the early French furniture in colonial Canada.
It was the first book to organize and regionalize furniture based on the various motifs and carvings. Truly a magnificent volume.
Try to get the original large size book as its value to the reader is based on the photos. The later edition is half the size of the original book.
This is a "must have" for both artisans and collectors. No disappointments here.

If you are an oil lamp lover / collector, this is a must have book ! Its actually a reproduction of the catalog of the British Oil Lamp Maker of late 19th, and early 20th Century , by the name of SHERWOODS LTD, Birmingham. Their Lamps were considered to be of very high quality and very very popular. Now, these lamps are very highly sought, and are extremely rare ! Sherwood's lamps get exceptionally high value.

The Catalog has 100s of designs of their various oil lamps : table , hanging , wall etc. The Catalog even has lots of illustrations of the Lamp Parts made by Sherwoods - like various burners, shades, bases , chimneys etc.

The book, or catalog, has only sketched illustrations ( very neat and detailed ! ) of lamps and parts : there are no color or B&W photographs.

I've bought several expensive books on the subject ironically this is the only one I use. The instructions are concise and simple to follow. Very nice pieces... Buy this first and save yourself some money and aggravation!

As I sit here in my living room,I see two pieces of furniture I made from the plans in this book. These were the FIRST items I ever made from wood. They are remarkably easy to make and yet functional and very attractive.

A handsome, long-overdue monograph on an architect who, between 1948 and his untimely death in 1961, created some of America's greatest icons-including Dulles Airport in Virginia, the Gateway Arch in St Louis, and the CBS tower in New York-as well as the classic Womb and Tulip chairs. Saarinen defied categorization, employing a different style for every job, and that damned him in the eyes of many critics. Some of his buildings soar-the TWA Terminal at Kennedy, now imperiled, was once a thrilling expression of the jet age-others, like Stiles and Morse College at Yale, and the US Embassy in London fall with a thud. Roman, a Bilbao-based architect, traces the evolution of key buildings with an abundance of plans and images.

As a bibliophile, I was elated to receive this book as a present a couple of years ago. I have the hard cover edition and it is one of the finest books in my collection for both content and the actual book itself (binding, cover, quality of paper, typography, layout). I build reproductions of Egyptian furniture from the Pharaoic age and have found the illustrations and descriptions very helpful for my craft. I highly reccomend this fine book. ...B.

It started with his poetry when I was in high school. Imediately, I was spellbound. Then I found this collection of short stories. I cannot stop reading. I love every aspect of his "craft or sullen art." When I read his works, I feel a kind of longing and comfort. The stories in this collection were taken from books that were already published, and after reading these stories, I want to read everything Dylan Thomas ever wrote. When I see his picture, I sense a bond between him and I. I see the little boy, I see the young man; I know them. Dylan Thomas' type of writing is something all writers want to achieve. His words are completely private and honest. He is an imortal legacy.

This book is a must for serious collectors of period 18th century French furniture.

Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice furniture historian, nor to a novice collector, for the more experienced student of l8thC furniture history this book is an invaluable source of information seldom, if ever, published in one volume before. The format of the book allows research by subject alone (e.g. material and techniques) if, like me, you find the text rather too dry and heavy going to be a steady read. I would suggest that no serious library of furniture history will be complete without this volume.
