Uncut page edges. B&W plates on quality cream stock paper with great contrast and clarity; 6.5" x 9.75" x 1.75`, xxi, 237 pp + index. With a multitude of plates in B&W - single & double-sided incl. frontis. 117 plates.

A rare book with photographs that are even more rare, all having been taken prior to the printing of this book in 1924, some of furniture from centuries ago. These homes and furnishings were already antiques at the time this book was published in 1912! A wealth of information, gloriously illustrated, by a great historian & noted expert on Early American glass. The photos are awesome & Mary Northend's knowledge of old homes & their furnishings is indispensable. You won't see these photos of early homes & their furniture anywhere else.

Since the 1876 Centennial, furniture companies, decorators, and home builders have incorporated early American designs into their products. This book recounts the history of this Colonial style, including the New York Dutch.

Mary Northend and other female domestic advisors used Colonial furniture to express their patriotic commitment. As Northend wrote in 1909, "Homes constructed by the early settlers in this country ... possessed, almost without exception, one feature of comfort and cheeriness which is sadly lacking in modern homes. ... The enormous open fireplace with its huge logs and high-backed wooden settles around which the family life of the sturdy pioneers centered." Northend connected the fireplaces and the settles (Colonial benches), which she photographed again and again, with family life and sturdiness. In her photographs, she manipulated furniture because she wanted to find a way for middle-class American families to re-create the ideal of family life that she held so dear and that she associated with the Colonial era.

This is the only book in the 'Amos' series I didn't previously own. After finding it in zShops, I snatched it up immediately. What a find! If you like the 3 other 'Amos' books, you have to have this one, too. It's one of the best. Amos goes camping in the woods with his family (of course they strap his couch to the top of the car) and has quite an adventure. I am a real dog lover, and enjoy ALL the 'Amos' stories. I wish Susan would write another! She writes with the ability to appeal to children - while amusing us adults.

About the Book :
This book is an outcome of a comprehensive study of the kaleidoscopic variety of furniture articles prevailing during the period second century BC to sixth-seventh centuries AD. The book is divided into various chapters highlighting the enormous details of each item of the furniture articles like thrones, chairs, wheeled furniture, seats, wicker stands, tables, bedsteads, etc. The indigenous traits and the foreign impacts on the Indian furniture are brilliantly highlighted. To achieve this end, the sculptures of Barhut, Sanchi, Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Mathura, Gandhara and the murals of Ajanta, supplemented by the literary data have been brought within the compass of the study.

Angels in my garden

Angels, flowers and animals galore!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-15
What can you do with wood, metal, paint, terra cotta and floor cloths? You can make every project in the book ANGELS IN MY GARDEN. This 50 page book has preparation facts, project ideas with complete instructions, all the templates you need and full color photos of the completed projects. There is even a page of painting terms included just so you don't get confused with the "technical stuff"!

Each project has an angel with flowers in it, thus the title of the book! She is a sweet curly haired nymph that has a winning smile and makes you want to hug her. She sometimes has dogs, cats or bunnies by her or maybe a friendly bee, bird, lad bug or butterfly. She can be found in a water can, hiding among a bunch of flowers or listening to a bird sitting on his bird house singing a tune.

The projects range from a bucket, door hanger, flower pot, clock, candle, pitcher, floor cloth, garden rack or a table. There are also wind chime plant stakes, photo albums or just a pretty picture. All in all, there are 23 projects that you can create.

While this is a painting book, as a quilt teacher too, I can see the possibilities of using some of the templates as appliqué designs for my quilt squares. While most are too intricate for quilting as they are intended to be painted, there are some that are simple enough such as the daisies, a tulip, the dog, a bird, the bunny, the lady bug, a butterfly, the birdhouse, the watering can, and one of the angels. WOW! Don't you just love multi-purpose books? It's the teacher in me showing. Maybe Ms. Wood would even consider creating a book of her wonderful angels just especially for appliqué! If she ever did, I would be sure to buy it. Her angels are just the thing to put on a project, whether that project is painted or quilted, for the little angel in your life.

Any book with a dedication that begins, "For everyone who loves antiques..." deserves a read by people in our circle. It's a great bunch of stories. I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm wondering if young people would enjoy this book as much as the older folks. Any thoughts on this?

Even tough the focus is a lot on European, English and American furniture, which were and are trendsetters, the book is very informative and the explanations are done by qualified experts(s) in the subject.

I have it on my shelve and I can constantly consult it for several styles and history of furniture, as well as for general knowledge to apply when purchasing or discussing about furniture.

The layout and index of names, styles, objects etc are easy to comprehend and are well illustrated. Moro color photo's in the next edition please!

A definite recommendation for those that want to become an expert, for the aficionado and the professional.

At long last, an authoritative book on garden ornament in America! Barbara Israel delivers a beautiful tome with scholarly punch in her Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste. Many books exist on gardens and landscape history, but none addresses the issue of the statues, fountains, and furniture used within them with such depth and clarity as Ms. Israel. In addition to the chapters themselves, the catalogue of objects in the back of the book and the list of makers provide a greatly needed reference for this growing field. I highly recommend this book.

A Worthy Addition to Your Library.

A wonderful book that is replete with detail, this edition is indispensable for those who frequent auctions and antique shops. The examples given in the book run the gamut from utilitarian/functional to elaborate/ornate. The book is weighted towards the low-medium market, and examples of antiques that are reachable only to those with a prodigious income are few and far between; no Boulle, Belter, or Marot to be seen here. As such, this volume is infinitely usable, and somewhat of a welcome change from the reams of books focused on antiques only seen at Sotheby's or museums. This volume makes a wonderful companion to Miller's Price Guide.
