Although Duck Calls of Illinois, 1863-1963 by Robert D. Christensen is limited to Illinois calls made prior to 1964, it encompasses all of the early documented history of the modern duck call. This is because all of the documented history happened to occur in Illinois.

This is a fascinating and very well done book that no duck call collector could possibly do without. Over 100 Illinois call makers are represented including Charlie and Haddon Perdew, Clifford, Grubbs, Martin, Trutone,Barto, Olt, Allen, Ditto, Leonard, the Glodo family, and the Roseberry family. The great photography will help in identifying many of your unknown calls.

$65 might seem like a lot of money for a book, but considering the rather limited market it is a bargain. The best $65 I I've spent since I started collecting calls.

This brick played a large part in inspiring TreeHugger.com. Full of pictures and key info about sexy, green furniture, transportation, materials, clothing, and more, it's the bible of green design. Each selection in the book has a handy legend that explains the eco-design strategy applied, the materials used, designer, etc. It's a fascinating read for both the average green-interested consumer and the hard-core green designer. Instantly up your eco-status by sliding this into your coffee-table collection.

Full of great inspiration and ideas for a professional designer and casual reader alike, this little book is a must-have addition for anyone interested in alternative design, architecture, or furniture. It is full of pictures and short descriptions of each item, making it perfect for flipping through in your spare time. It reads almost like an in-depth catalogue, but with the integrity (and lack of ads) that comes with being a book. The designs are fantastic, even if they werent eco-friendly. Great book for those who prefer reading tid-bits after seeing a picture they like rather than reading page after page. GREAT IDEAS!

I received this book yesterday and cannot put it down. The pictures, drawings and advice are fantastic. I am very interested in upholstery projects for my home and am ready to move from a "beginning Intermediate" level to "Intermediate". This book is just what I needed for more guidance. I have an extensive collection of upholstery books, and except for "Simply Upholstery" and the "Singer Upholstery Basics" books, I have been mostly disappointed with the books I have received as they were not helpful or showed unrealistic projects. This book is like being in an upholstery class with a smart, interesting teacher. I hope Dorothy Gates writes more books on this subject. I would certainly buy it!!

I took an upholstery class a few years ago and this book is by far the best in taking you through the steps of how to properly upholster furniture! If you only buy one book on upholstering, make it this one. I am now buying another copy of this book for a relative who'll be doing her own re-upholstering.

Especially recommended for college-level courses in international politics

Review Date: 2006-04-27
Plenty of international development projects are fostered in richer nations and fail in poorer ones: is it because these regions are inherently corrupt, or because developers don't really understand how these developing nations work? THE POWER OF GREED: COLLECTIVE ACTION IN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT analyzes the common problems involved in community development projects, challenging the routines and ideas of international development agencies and showing how individuals in developing nations often don't see their individual needs addressed in such projects. Chapters survey conceptual frameworks of success, strategies, and both failures and achievements in light of these ideas. Especially recommended for college-level courses in international politics

Understanding from a Real World Practitioner

The amount of treasure expended as aid to developing countries since World War II has been immense. If it had worked, there should have been no poverty left in the world, democracy should have developed everywhere, and the whole world a better place to live. Needless to say, it hasn't worked out that way. Instead we are seeing countries facing massive amounts of debt that will never be repaid.

Dr. Rosberg is a Canadian living in Belize. This book reflects what he has learned from his years of observing and working with developmental projects. He says that for a project to be successful, an individual's self-interest (which he calls greed) has to tell him that doing these things will be beneficial to him. Dr. Rosberg says that the sterile debates of morality associated with wealth generation have to be laid aside. This is a pragmatic book that looks at the world of developing companies as he finds them, not as something abstract as might be viewed from an ivory tower.

This is an interesting point of view that looks at modern problems in a way that almost relates back to the work of Adam Smith many years ago.

Fortuny

Review Date: 2007-07-08
What a beautiful book. The photos are gorgeous. I had no idea that Fortuny invented indirect lighting for the theatre, the dimmer switch, and a movable dome that could have images projected on it for the backdrop. He was truly a multitalented man. I bought the book mostly to learn more about the Delphos pleated dress. While there are many lovely photos, old and new, I wished there had been some schematics of the various versions of the dress. I wished there had been more information on how it was made, but then again, I guess that was supposed to be his big secret that died with him. As a weaver and textile artist, I still find the book inspiring, and it was worth the high price.

A Luscious Book!

If you admire the work of Fortuny or if you just love beautiful textiles, this is the book for you. The photographs of his textiles are simply gorgeous and the text is well researched.

I first came across this book many years ago when it was first published. I have used it many times. It's full of good information. If you are looking for steps 1,2,3 and specific directions, there are others out there but this is book is packed with many facts and debunks a lot of myths regarding refinishing and care of furniture. I've loaned this book out a multitude of times upon request. I didn't get it back the last time so now I've had to re-purchase a copy for my own use.
