great bookReview Date: 2003-09-27
Great book about high school football!Review Date: 2003-09-11
Each of the main characters has a secret that they're trying to hide. Steve Dentry, all-star RB with the beautiful g/f has an alcoholic dad no one knows about; two of the linemen on the team are shooting steroids and don't care about the consequences; and the new starting QB has never started a game in his life - and you wonder does he have the moxy to pull it off?
Pine shot for a "realistic" portrayal of high school football. I think the games and action sequences are amazing. I felt like I was watching the games. In fact, two of the games are announced by a couple of cable TV guys. The final game against cross-town rival Eastern High comes down to the last play (of course!). Also, these boys swear, some of them even drink beer. I mean, hey, let's not kid ourselves. Some high schoolers drink, not all, and to ignore this just makes the problem worse. I can imagine that in future books in the series there might even be sex or drugs (besides steroids) or other things Pine wants to discuss.
One of the best moments comes when Steve, the all-star running back, drives his dad to an AA meeting. It's got all the awkwardness that moment would have in real life between a father and a son, plus the hope that things could be on their way to getting better.
A couple minor criticisms though: 1. the cover looks a little too cut-and-paste with computer graphics. Plus I can't figure out, besides the two people at the bottom (Steve and Rachel), who the others are supposed to be - the black guy's probably Darnell, the sophomore phenom, but maybe the kid in the collared shirt is Ty and the other guys are Tony and Jeff (but their numbers don't match). I'm guessing Pine had no control over his cover artwork. 2. I'm from the Detroit area, where the book takes place, and Western High is supposed to be part of the OAA. This is a huge athletic conference in Oakland County, a suburb of Detroit, but none of the teams that Western plays are in the OAA. Three of the teams, Kennedy, Truman, and Eisenhower, are real Detroit area teams. Two of them are downriver and the other one is in Macomb County.
Minor sticking points, but little things. They didn't detract from the novel.
At the end of the book, Pine included a list of websites for those kids interested in learning more on how bad steroids are for them. I checked them out and learned more, especially about former NFLer Lyle Alzado. He died of cancer a few years ago. ...
All I know is that I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

11-07-07 - Miami Lakes Public Library Story Telling ExperienceReview Date: 2007-11-08
As a resident of Miami Lakes, I was taken by the enthusiasm and style of the author. Her work centers around the stories told by her Abuelita Nena [grandmother] and her discovery of these stories no longer available to the new generations.
She observed that we MUST transfer these wonderful tales to children today, that we should sometimes turn the TV off and all other communications means of today and simply talk, allowing for the imagination of child to take hold of the development to ensure citizens capable of the self assurance provided by knowing how to enjoy the simple things in life.
The author's work is published in two languages, English and Spanish, so parents are able to talk children through the work and yet maintain the heritage alive, if the customer is of Spanish background.
The illustrations are done by an artist from Puerto Rico and the creatures represent the birds native to the Caribbean, carefully detailing traditional customs.
During the presentation, the author delighted children with string stories, told in both languages, and it was remarkable to see how... young and old... were captivated by her style and passion to keep folklore alive!
Will acquire these and make wonderful Christmas presents for the children in our family to support the effort to keep our heritage... ALIVE!!!

best book of my lifeReview Date: 2007-12-06
One of the things that the author did a great job on was the suspense he added throughout the story. For examples the ghost mother got inside Sarah, how jacks asthma attacks almost killed him multiple times, how he had contact with the other side, and so many other problems. All the main parts of the story lead up to one and another. I also liked that he could add such an evil character such as the ghost mother, and still make us connect with her. I feel like i connected with all the characters, and now that it is over, i feel i want more. Overall , this book was great and i would suggest it to all age groups.
We have always lived in the CastleReview Date: 2007-03-09
It's got a Shirley Jackson feel in that you're never quite sure if certain characters are good or bad, if there will be a happy ending (and if it were happy, what "happy" would be).
The story is sophisticated and complicated but the subject matter would still be ok for those advanced readers who are still too young for Young Adult books. Very satisfying.

Brother Rabbit outwits a crocodile several timesReview Date: 2004-03-02
The story tells how one day Brother Rabbit was hopping along one morning when he spied a patch of tender rice seedlings being planted in a field across the river. The problem was how to get across the river to steal into the field for a feast and when a crocodile comes swimming along Brother Rabbit believes he can get a free ride across. However, that only proves to the first encounter between the pair and what I especially like about the story is that Brother Rabbit does not get the better of crocodile just once, but repeatedly in the telling of the tale, as well as an elephant. Many readers will obviously be reminded of Brer Rabbit from the tales of Uncle Remus. "Brother Rabbit" has illustrations by Jennifer Hewitson, which were done in watercolor paints and inks that artfully captures the culture from whence this tale sprang.
