I absolutely loved the story line in this book! A Princess is given 3 Princes to choose from to marry. She has a difficult time deciding and in the end chooses the best one. A very fun find for children, and a valuable lesson is learned as well. Definitely an enjoyable book. Great for Multicultural classrooms or integrating Arab culture into the room!

The plot will be familiar to anyone who has seen the old silent movie "Thief of Bagdad." This is a Middle Eastern tale of three princes who search the world for rare treasures in order to win the hand of a princess. Will true love triumph? Wonderful telling of a classic story.

As an ESL teacher, I'm always looking for books to share as a read aloud to honor my students' native cultures. Not only is this a noteworthy book, but the illustrations are magnificent. My students from the Middle East always enjoy the sharing of this story with their new friends. I applaud the princess in this tale for her choice of a prince. Her wisdom is extraordinary; she provides a worthwhile lesson for all students.

A picturebook adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fable

We Both Read: Thumbelina is a picturebook adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fable. Like all picturebooks in the "We Both Read" series, Thumbelina is designed to be read by parents and children together; longer, more complex passages are marked with one symbol for parents, and simple sentences are marked with a symbol for children. The colorful illustrations perfectly suit this timeless fairy tale about an extraordinarily tiny girl and the many adventures she has before finally meeting the prince of the flower kingdom. A wonderful picturebook perfect for sharing storytime with young people who are just learning to sound out words.

Great version of this fairy tale classic

A gorgeous, joyful adaptation of this Hans Christian Andersen classic. Belgian illustrator Quentin Greban (one of my faves!) crafts a beautiful, evocative vision of this magical, though slightly creepy, story -- the perfect look for a classic fairy tale... The text, by educational writer Sindy McKay, is designed to encourage children to read along with adults -- it includes prompts for both adult and child readers, but it's not necessary at all -- an older reader can still easily read the book for smaller children and it will still be very enjoyable. We've read a few different Thumbelinas, and this is by far and away out favorite. Highly recommended! (ReadThatAgain!)

An old story retold with a charming western flair. Our children are older now, but I still look for picture books to give as gifts. This is my most recent favorite. We keep a copy on the coffee table to read to young guests and have several stashed away.

Great story. Great illustrations. Great book!

A wonderful kids book. Engaging story, mine loved it. Wonderful illustrations, kids really enjoy all the visual activity. Fun to read with your kids - we all enjoyed how the story progressed from page to page and have read and re-read it. A nice picture into western, cowboy life and humour.

I love this book! It's a wonderful retelling of an old Jewish folktale placed in a Western setting. The story flows beautifully and the language is fun! Children I have read it to have loved all the western terms. There is even a glossary of some of the words and phrases to help with understanding.

The cowboy in the story is given a beautiful piece of leather which he makes into chaps for himself. As time goes by, the chaps wear out and are remade into something new. The cowboy's life also changes with time. The story is full of warmth and the beautiful illustrations fit it perfectly. They are warm and alive and full of action. A welcome change from many of the newer books today. It is a univeral story of life with a new twist.

THE book for Wallace and Ladmo fans!

This is THE book about the longest-running show in TV history (and rightfully so.) All the profits from it go to charity. I bought it a few years ago. It includes a chapter (biography and photos) on each of the show's four decades; what happened after the show ended; song lyrics ("I watched the tube today, Wall-boy/Captain Super didn't make the grade..."); fan comments; and sections on some of the show's behind-the-scenes people, other performers like Dan Horn, and regular guests like Officer Harry, celebrity guests; and more.

The best thing about this book is all the photos. I loved the photos from the early years. I didn't start watching until the '70s, so those '50s and '60s photos are fascinating to me. I also liked the photos of their live shows (remember Legend City and the state fair?) and the photos of the set. Too many of them look a bit grainy or out-of-focus. It would've been nice to have more photos of Pat McMahon's hundreds of different characters. (That could've been a book in itself!) But since more/better photos probably don't exist, I can't fault the book for not including them. This book is as good as it could possibly be.

It will be of interest to anyone interested in TV history and/or Arizona history. I think it should be required reading for all the masses of people moving here. And if you're a Wallace and Ladmo fan, how can you live without it?

Damn, I miss these guys. Even Gerald. They make me proud to be an Arizona native. Here's to you, Ladmo!

If you loved the show, buy the book!

When I was a young child in Arizona, I used to watch Wallace and Ladmo every morning before I went to school up until I was 7 and moved to California. I didn't move back to Arizona until I was in my 20's and by then the show had gone off the air. But just because it is no longer on the air does not mean it has to fade away. This book was the greatest gift I could have ever received. Not only could I reminisce about the show I loved as a child but I also learned about how the show started and what happened in the years after I had moved away. And this book is filled with hundreds of photos that bring back so many memories. Even though I only watched the Wallace and Ladmo Show for a few years, it will always have a big place in my heart and I will always be able to relive those happy memories with this great book.

To Be a Politician reads as well today as it did when Stim
Bullitt wrote it (and I first read it, 36 years ago). Provocative, insightful, sometimes even amusing, its message
is as timely now as then. Bullitt lost the election campaign
he so well describes, but this book remains a winner.

To Be A Politician is simply one of the finest books on politics I have ever read. It is such a deeply insightful and enjoyable read, and so difficult to put down, that I devoured it entirely in several mesmerized sittings. Mr. Bullitt is as erudite as he is modest, compassionate and amusing, with an urbane style and polished wit reminiscent of the late Bertrand Russell. I cannot recommend his book highly enough to the student, the teacher, the amateur politician or the political historian - to anyone with an interest in the enterprize of public service.

I have a little daughter and she lost her Mom last year. I had been wondering what the loss meant to my daughter. Now through this book, I know how much she missed her Mom every day.

absolutely delightful African story

I am an elementary art teacher, and I read this book to my first graders when we were talking about African art. They absolutely loved the story! By the end of the book, they were reciting the repeating phrases with me. Then they wanted me to read the whole story all over again. I seldom get such an ethusiastic response from my students when I read to them. The artwork in the book is very reminiscent of African art and goes along very well with an art project we make when talking about Africa. This book is a wonderful addition to a unit on Africa.

Authentic story, beautiful pictures

The artwork is rich, detailed, amusing, and simultaneously illustrates different lines of the story--that is, in the background, are shown the line about the characters running up hill and down, while in the foreground the next phase and character of the story is depicted. Also each of the talking items floats in the background space, so you have lots of things to point out and talk about with the little ones--or just go for the story, it's fun. The colors and the dress of the people match what we see in W. Africa. My child enjoyed an animated reading from the age of 18 months. The story is a traditional one as well, which lends to the overall richness. I have a number of children's books depicting W. Africa, and this and Trina Schart Hyman's Fortune Teller are my favorites for their beauty, detail, and their faithfulness to the scene here. To the Sweet Shores of Africa, is another beauty as well---this one is poems with beautiful pictures.

Let's Talk About it!

Talking yams are only the beginning of this simple and hysterically hyperdramatic retelling of an old Ashanti tale. When a farmer encounters a talking yam and runs and tells a fisherman, the fish talks, assuring him such a thing can't happen. Panic and hilarity ensues in the brief text and stylized pictures.

This is one of those folktales that can be introduced to children of any age, and lends itself especially well to read-aloud for groups of children. Read-aloud works especially well with plenty of movement on the part of the reader, and encourages participation. Each talking creature or object invites the children to respond with a heartfelt "Aiyeee!" as the growing number of people run on, until they reach the king, for the inevitable conclusion. The story isn't meant to be a serious one, and the method of telling and illustrations support this humorous, almost comic strip kind of storyline. The large text on each page is short and to the point, making it accessible to even very young children.

The art is lovely to look at--and you can see the African styling of it. Stefano Vitale has crafted a very vivid collection of images for this story. However, there does seem to be some mixture of African styles, according to some professional reviews, and this may be less well received by those familiar with regional African art styles. In my case, however, the stylized art and various elements of African imagery allow for children to get some exposure to this sort of art and style.

As to the story itself, it appears to be an old folktale from Ghana, and an amusing one at that. I've seen another version of this story in "Anansi and The Talking Melon" by Eric Kimmel--one of the trickster tales where the cunning spider causes havoc by making a melon seem to talk. I'm not quite certain if these stories have the same origin, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Folktales are an important part of a balanced book diet, and it's often hard to find extremely simple ones for the youngest readers and listeners. This book is ideal on both counts. If you enjoy this, I reccomend checking out other Trickster tales such as Raven: Trickster Tales from the Pacific Northwest by Gerald McDermott and The Monkey and the Crocodile: I Jataka Tale from India by Paul Galdone.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

This is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary author. It is literate beyond the probably intended audience of chidren but not elusive in any sense. A single reading doesn't begin to reveal the depth of both the story and the art work. The many shifts between dreams and reality are compelling and delightful and unlike most "children's literature". I read this book to my children, boys and girls both and they read it to me. It was exciting for all of us on every read. It is, as one of them said, "a travesty" that it is out of print and as another said, "a tragedy" that I did not buy hundreds of copies to hoard just for the appreciated value. Perhaps, but the real appreciated value is that we all shared McPhail's vision repeatedly over the years. It is a great read, buy it at any cost and keep it in the family forever.

The only sad thing about this book is that it is out of print, and if this review can, in some small way, contribute to bringing the book back, I'll be very happy. David McPhail has a wonderful way of blending the worlds of reality and fantasy, awakeness and dream. In this book, Matthew goes to bed after his baby brother breaks his beloved model train. He apparently tries and fails to fall asleep, then climbs out of his bunk bed to see a full-size steam locomotive parked in his bedroom! He enjoys several adventures on the train, and gets to help the engineer drive the train. Then, as he becomes sleepy again, the engineer cradles him in his arms, and carries him to his own sleeper car--which bears a remarkable resemblance to his bunk bed. This is a tender, magical story, and every child who loves trains will love it.

I have had a paperback copy of this book since I was a child, and it is now pretty dog-eared from being read so many times with much laughter. It was originally called, 'Life With Mother Superior,' and is a true story of Jane Trahey(1923-2000)and her High School years at 'St. Marks'(actually Providence Academy in IL). Rollicking, hysterically funny, and so, so nostalgic for we pre-Vatican 2 Catholic types. It was such a good book that a movie was made in 1966 with Hayley Mills and Ros Russell, called 'The Trouble With Angels,' and a sequel, 'Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows.' Trahey, after her graduation from Providence Academy and Mundelein College, was a famous advertising executive in New York, withb her own agency. She died of cancer in 2000. This book is special, and its humour is ageless.

I read this story when it was first published in the sixties...and read and reread it in hysterics. The two girl heroines meet and instantly falll together over a hatred for conformity and a love of mischief. But as time goes on, they go their separate ways. It also gives an unsentimental view of the pre-Vatican II Catholic church, for good and for bad. As advised above, it is the basis for the Rosalind Russell/Hayley Mills movie, "The Trouble with Angels" -- but as usual the book is far better than the movie.

As I recall, the author Jane Trahey grew up to be a prominent advertising executive. You can tell that it was the relationship detailed in this book that helped stoke her creativity. Why is this book no longer in print? It's a classic.

The book that started it all...

This fabulous novel came to life on film with Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior and Haley Mills playing Mary Clancy. If you find a copy of this wonderful book, hang on to it!

If you enjoyed the movie, see the film! It was delightful!

The basic plot:
Two young girls meet on a bus to a Catholic School; St. Francis. Mischeif and mayhem follow after the two girls become friends.
