My 2 year old daughter loves this book. I had no idea she would love it this much, she has been reading this book almost daily since Christmas. I love how she can literally bring the characters to life as she is reading the story (the pieces can be taken out of the box and she can play along as we read the story). I will definitely be buying more of these, you cannot go wrong with this book.

My daughter is very energetic and often too antsy to sit still while I read her a story book. She'll start flipping the pages, or pointing at the illustrations, or will simply wander off. She never really pays attention to what I'm reading to her.

This book was the perfect solution for her restlessness. Behind the book is a small drawer that holds little play pieces (like the characters and other objects from the story) that go along with the book. When we read the story, she uses the pieces to play along. Then afterwards, she keeps retelling the story with the pieces. Hearing her retell the story over and over again lets me know that she is really paying attention when we read...finally!

The Good People: New Fairylore Essays

Review Date: 2007-03-12
Peter Narvez has written a book for those of us who are Celtic and for those of us who wish to see the Other, be it fairy or alien, in a different, perhaps more complete, way. The book is comprehensive to the date of its publication. It offers a number of points for consideration or additonal study. While some essays are stronger than others, and some are clearer than others, in the main, "The Good People" is a wonderful treatment of the Otherworld as it is known in the non-UFO community. Along with folkloric treatments of the Other, Vallee's "Passport to Magonia" and Thompson's "Angels and Aliens," it should be mandatory reading for all of us who are concerned that the debate on extraordinary experiences and alien encounters is too narrow, too full of heat with little light, and too parochial.

Little serious work on the fairy faith has been done in recent times, but this collection of scholarly essays makes up for the lack. As is often the case in this fascinating area of folklore, a few of the essays make you marvel at the enduring and oddly consistent character of the accounts. It gives me a wee chill to read recordings of interviews with Scottish schoolchildren done in the 1970s, and realize that they repeat notions noted among Welshmen by Sir John Rhys fully three-quarters of a century before. An excellent, entertaining and scholarly book that should be in the collection of any folklorist interested in the fairy faith.

Fairylore Lives!

Most books on fairylore are collections first published in the nineteenth century or draw primarily from the author's imagination. Those wishing to know more must fall back on scholarly journals that may not be readily available to most readers. This book makes such studies available in an affordable form that you will reread many times. The studies in this book reflect beliefs and attitudes among people of the late twentieth century in communities of maritime Canada as well as Celtic countries. What is most illuminating is the consistency between recent attitudes and those collected earlier.

My daughter, Lena, 3 years old, loves this book. The title first caught her interest but she also enjoys the story. Gardens are intriguing to her and this story centered around a garden brings so many other positive lessons to light including cooperation, sharing, community spirit, family. I highly recommend this book to be included in any children's collection at home or teacher's collection at school.

Grandma Lena's Big Ol' Turnip is a soul-food picturebook adaptation of an old Russian folktale which is wonderfully illustrated by the fetching artwork of Jackie Urbanovic. A grand tall tail about woman who takes good care of her garden; the biggest turnip in it is so humongous that Grandma Lena, Uncle Isadore, Aunt Netty, and the dog can't make it budge! Who will make the difference? Exuberant color pictures add a whimsical touch to this cheerful tale with a positive message: "Anything worth doing is worth doing right".

What a Stunning Book. Profound and original. Powerful and moving. Truly spiritual. In only thirty two pages, in sensitive langauge and glorious illustrations we are privy to the intimate relationship between grandmother and grandaughter and the fears of the child and the comforting presence of the grandmother guiding her granchild into adult hood. The child grows into a strong woman and learns to take care of her grandmother in turn. Love endures after the death of the Grandmother as does Grandmother's spirit. And the death of the grandmother, so sensitively illustrated and the granddaughters sorrow so acutely described make it a perfect book for children and adults who are grieving the loss of a loved one. I use the book in my practice as a grief counselor both with children and adults.. My granchildren love it and I hope I can leave a similiar legacy to my grandchildren as grandmother does in the book. The book is a jewel.

Grandmother's Song is a story for children of all ages and is not limited to older children. I was moved to tears, joyous tears, by the sensitive relationship between grandmother and grandchild. Grandmother through her grounded presence listens into the bone's of her granddaughter's fears and holds and strokes her in her strong arms and generous lap. The bonding is very deep and grandmother soothes her beloved charge day after day year after year and strokes into her qualities she inherited from her grandmother and great grandmother to be able to meet life as a full and integrated woman. Trust, courage, healing, dignity. Granddaughter matures and inturn cares for her grandmother in her last days with the help of her own children. then there is a dream and the death of grandmother and granddaughter comes face to face with the loss and greif of her beloved friend. And then in the height of her grief grandmother's spirit holds and rocks her granddaughter and the granddaughter understand the continuity of life which she passes down to her own children and grandchildren. i and my children welcomed a lusher language than is usually found in picture books. We also welcomed the unusualness of the story. The illusrtations so perfectly match in sensitivity and emotional articulateness the story. The gentle water colours, the authentic settings, the true to life people all deepened the story. And the afterwards by the author intelligently deepens the insights of the story itself. This is a book for Granddmother's and Grandchildren, for children who must deal with loss of a loved one and who may benefit from a sense of resolve. My children ask for it repeatedly and ask me to hold them as the grandmother holds her grandchild. this is truly a classic and I am gratified it is written by another Vermonter. It will endure over the years.

A wonderful collection of creative and pleasing stories

Young Snowflower lives with her grandmother, Dame Frostyface, in a little cottage at the edge of a forest. The two are very poor, and own only a cat, two hens, a bed of dried grass, and one good piece of furniture: "a great armchair with wheels on its feet, a black velvet cushion, and many curious carvings of flowers and fawns on its dark oaken back."

One day, Dame Frostyface leaves to visit her aunt, and asks Snowflower to remain behind. She tells the girl that the fancy armchair was made by a cunning fairy, and that it is enchanted. If Snowflower should feel lonely, she should lay her head gently on the cushion of the armchair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, tell me a story. Should Snowflower have the occasion to travel, she should sit in the chair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, take me such a way."

After an interval of solitude, Snowflower's food stores are nearly depleted, so she decides to travel in the armchair along the same path her grandmother took. While journeying, she hears that King Winwealth plans to give a seven day feast to celebrate the birth of his only daughter, Princess Greedalind. Snowflower, who is quite hungry, wishes to share in the feast, and travels to the palace in the enchanted armchair.

Since the disappearance of his brother, Prince Wisewit, King Winwealth has been an unhappy ruler, especially since his marriage to the covetous and disagreeable Queen Wantall and the birth of their unpleasant child. The King's low spirits prompt his favorite page to suggest that Snowflower's chair might provide some diversion, so she and the chair are summoned to the banquet each evening to entertain the king.

Each evening, the chair tells a different story until a total of seven stories are told: "The Christmas Cuckoo", "The Lords of the White and Grey Castles", "The Greedy Shepard", "The Story of Fairyfoot", "The Story of Childe Charity", "Sour and Civil", and "The Story of Merrymind". As each consecutive evening passes, the king's depression lifts and Snowflower's situation improves, until all of the stories end happily together.

This wonderful collection of creative and pleasing stories will entertain fairytale enthusiasts of all ages.

A Collection of Tales Loved By Frances Hodgson Burnett

Review Date: 2001-12-13
Frances Browne, the author of this enchanting and original collection of fairy tales lived between 1816 and 1879. She was blinded by smallpox when she was a baby and so all of the vivid descriptions in this charming book are from her own memory of the tales that she heard as a child and from her colorful imagination. In 1904 Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote an introduction for a new edition of the book because as a little child she had won a copy of it as a prize for good behavior in school. It became her favorite book but was lost to her over the years. She searched high and low for it and it eventually surfaced in Boston and again in a second hand shop in London. This edition contains the introduction by Burnett that is certainly an added treat. It is brilliantly illustrated by Switzerland's Gisele Rime with her characteristic bright colors and whimsical decorative borders. Unlike other collections of fairy tales these are completely original and bring us new characters and plots with gentle moral lessons. The fame of Frances Browne may not approach the Grimms or Andersen but the beauty and cleverness of her tales will enchant and delight you just the same. Curl up in Granny's wonderful chair, snuggle close and follow the stories of Fairyfoot and Childe Charity, Prince Wisewit and Merry Mind. Meet the Lords of the White and Grey Castles. This is a grand experience not just a good book.

Do you remember visiting Grandma as a child? Perhaps snuggling into her favorite chair when you were too tired to possibly do anything else? Do you recall the comfort, the smell, the feel, the total release of 'Grandma's' chair? This was one my of favorite 'escape' books as a child. I would curl up in 'Granny's Wonderful Chair' and be transported to many a wonderous place. I have searched for many years for this title, and was so excited to see it unearthed for republishing! We will be reading it aloud as a family now. Granny's Wonderful Chair is a great addition not only to your library, but to you and your children's memory's as well!

Funny and devastating look into the culture of linguistics

You do not need to be a linguist to enjoy this funny, barbed, and acerbic look at the practice and culture of linquistics. If you are interested in studying linguistics, this is not a bad place to start. If you are a linguist, you will alternately wince and cheer at Pullum's observations.

And if you want to know whether one of the Eskimo languages has more words for snow than, say, English, here's the definitive and surprising answer.

I had this professor for my introduction to UNIX course at UC Santa Cruz. After the class, I noticed this book in the bookstore, and immediately purchased a copy.

I loved the Chomsky vs. the Vulcan thing :)

The linguistic concepts were a bit beyond me, but i loved the article about how linguistic journals correct (incorrectly) the grammar *of linguists*. And the English First article really shows the idiocity and lack of lingustic understanding among the general public. I'm starting to wonder if every academic discipline is misunderstood by the faceless "general public" ... and if so how I can reconcile this with my professed belief in the "inherent worth and dignity of every person."

Anyways, other interested pieces included a fictious piece where each division on campus is vying for the linguistics department to be moved under their jurisdiction, the eskimo vocabulary hoax piece of course, and just the overall tone and stuff. I highly recommend this if you like linguistics, or even if you don't like linguistics but like academic books with a sense of humor ;)

Amusing essays on language

Review Date: 2000-05-29
The author wrote a column for _Natural Language and Linguistic Theory_ for six years; this book collects them, with new prefaces to each essay. The tone is light, often frivolous, sometimes bitchy, occasionally educational, and always entertaining. The title essay demolishes the idea that Eskimos have many words for snow (there are two), and traces the myth's origin. Others contain a dialogue between Noam Chomsky (the linguist) and Spock (the Vulcan); a discussion of perverse punctuation (which many newsgroup writers would do well to read); a searing but hilarious attack on the English First people ("Here Come the Linguistic Fascists"); and "Some Lists of Things About Books" (my favorite: "Four Extraordinarily Ignorant Claims About Language in Books by Linguists"; all four come from the same book). Some of the humor is too linguistics-insider to be easily deciphered, but for the most part this is a highly amusing bunch of little articles from somebody who clearly loves language, and is fortunately willing to share his love with us.

The Denniston text is an extremely useful resource that any classicist should have in front of them when working with primary source materials from ancient Greece. The organization of the book facilitates ease of use, and the entries are filled with examples taken from antiquity. Comparing the entries on particles in Denniston with those in Smyth greatly add another level of understanding to the project of translation.

I have now had this book for several years and it is completely used and worn out. I have had intense moments with some of the meditations and light moments with others. The same meditation rarely goes the same way twice, but I feel safe in my explorations each time. They have done everything from helping me to let go of my days events, useless baggage and emotions to memory recall and sleep. My favorites are the sleep and healing meditations. You can make them as light or as intense as you like them to be. I highly recommend this book if you are newly-interested in or have been long-time practicing meditations!

I have used this book extensively in my personal and professional life. I find the meditations soothing and extremely helpful in focusing my energy and my thoughts. I also use the meditations in this book in professional counseling practice and my clients find these mediations very beneficial to their growth and healing. What I especially like about this book and the 2 other meditation books, Meditations for Healing and Meditations for Awareness is that they include a variety of authors. This inclusion of many authors I believe helps to expand the consciousness of the reader and increase the flow of energy during the mediation. I would highly recommed these books. I have purchased many copies of these books as gifts of healing, awakening and transformation for family and friends. PJ8115@AOL.com

This book is wonderfully relaxing to read. I began reading this book only out of curiosity. I didn't know what people meant by "visualizations". Once I got into the book, I realized that visualization is like playing "pretend" when we were children. I realized that the visulations could be related to things going on in my life. I also realized that the stories are so descriptive and soothing that after reading them, my mind was relaxed and calm. I taped myself reading some of the stories out loud and played them at bedtime and found that I slept like a baby! We read to children at bedtime, how about reading to each other? Well, I began using the visulations as bedtime stories for my 7 year old granddaughter. She listens and does the pretend excercises and falls into a relaxed sleep. The next day we talk about the visualizations. She actually looks forward to bedtime now. These are wonderful visulations and stories to read but they also serve as read aloud stories for children and adults. Do yourself a favor and get if not this Larry Moen book, then one of the others he has written!

This is the best introduction to ethology I have found: Desmond Morris is a good introduction for someone with no scientific background and "Foundations" by Konrad Lorenz uses words that may confuse the newcomer. If you are intrested in this amazing field this is a must. It has a good theoretical introduction and follows with a well organized guide into conducting a clean research. I am an Electronics graduate and found the book very accessible yet powerfully presented.
