Excellent and beautiful representation of natural birth at the end of the the book. Just as entertaining and stimulating as the rest of her books. Bought it a year ago and still read it over every month or two.

One of my favorite DTWOF books

I loved reading this book while I was going through my first pregnancy, even though mine was achieved in a more orthodox manner than Toni's :-) I hope my next time goes as smoothly as Rafael's birth. I think this book had a very accurate and suspenseful portrayal of pregnancy, and Clarice's stress was not stereotyped as the classic "nervous father"

When it was first published, Spawn was a very much needed kick in the butt to the whole superheroes comic book genre (which might be the only genre in the States...!). The Spawn it's a human being, not an aerobics teacher wearing tighs, like your typical DC-Marvel formula hero profile. It is somebod who feels, who loves sometimes and hates most of the time.

Don't get the wrong idea, the Spawn is not an antihero yet. We might need to wait some other 50 years for a real antihero coming out in the United States comics, but it's a step further (no brainer: villain and anti-hero are totally different things)...

This is one of the fine artr work of Todd Mcarlene when he was fresh from the MArvel Comics before he head out to Image. The Chracter spawn in this comics is a lost soul who is a member of a secret service agent who needs to be silence after a specific duty. Spawn return to earth in search for the memory he have bargain with the devil whom he can't remember what is the bargain about. Overall the artwork in the comics is Great when it was launch back in 92 and to compare the art at that time and now is two different things. The comics back then have not much of a computer aided effect so all the art are originally drawn and then printed art. For a great fan of Spawn it would be great to keep the original first printing of this issue.

this book stands out among the glut of horror fiction published in the eighties because of its hodgepodge of genres, and this blend works well, because its so unpredictable.......it wouldnt be right to give away the plot here, and the cover blurbs reveal little of whats inside......but,just read the first chapter, and you'll finish it very fast......

Spawn Urban Jungle. This is, in other words, Book nine from the Spawn's Book series. It has some of the greatest histories in the Spawn original saga (Issues 39 to 42). The first history is one of the sweetest ones ever, it describes a little boy's view of Christmas, makes you remember when you where a little boy and the "grown-ups" problems where of no concern to you. While Spawn is fighting some thieves on the little boy's roof, he thinks that all of the noises are just Santa and some of Santa's helpers. The end of this Christmas story called "Noel" is just a big surprise. The next three issues of this book start with a great history the first time that Spawn gets almost killed. He gets caught by some of The Curse's helpers, and the he's taken to a castle somewhere else. The Curse starts cutting Spawn's flesh into pieces just to send them to earth's greatest minds and... well, you have to read it to see what happens. The greatest part of these issues is how Spawn manages to escape from The Curse's hands, and how he terminates with The Curse's life. On the meantime, there are two background histories going on. When Cy-Gor starts looking for his prey (Spawn) and heads to New York, leaving a bloody path, also seeing Cy-Gor's human side as he saves a little boy from being killed. You can also see the two great detectives (Sam and Twich) as they look for some more clues and connections between Al Simmons (Spawn), Chief Banks, Senator Jennings' daughter and Billy Kincaid. You can also check out Twich's Beautiful Wife. And the conclusion of the great Three-issues-saga is when Spawn meets a funny little nerd that wants to be a hero when he grows up, and (with his great knowledge of comic books) he starts telling Spawn some things he doesn't know about his costume's design. One of the greatest things this book has is the Cover Art! Is Just REALLY Cool! As you can see, this book has it all. A must have for REAL Spawn fans. It starts with some sweet stuff, then it gets really violent, and ends on a big friendship between a Hell Spawn and a Nerd. I really recommend this great Book.

Everyone knows that "Spawn" is awesome. He's a guy who was tricked by the devil and wears a sweet costume. That being said, I kinda wish that this was in it's entirety. this TPB leaves out issues 9 and 10. Luckely, I went down to my Comic shop and got the original issues, but I think they should have been in here. issue 9 is the first appearence of Cogliastro, Angela, and Medivil Spawn, there were just some legal disputes and that's the reason it wasn't included. issue 10 is a satire on the comic industry and all of the various comic creators who have sold out. I reccamend that you buy those 2 issues, you can get them for like 2 bucks each. The last chapter in this is a two parter, but only the first chapter is presented, soooo you finish the book with an unfinished story. but for the most part, this book is filled with awesome writing and art.

Great read!!!

Al Simmons/Spawn is one of the more interesting comic book characters I've read who I'd recommend to anybody. He's no tight spandex mr. perfect who wants to save the world so he can get a pat on the back, no he is a flawed man struggling with his inner demons while caught in the middle of an ongoing war between heaven and hell. If your looking for something engaging to read than this is it, especially if you like anti-heroes.

Good start

This was a good book to pick up if you are just getting into the Spawn universe. It does omit issue 9-10 because of writer issues that happened in the 90's, but it is still worth checking out!

A nice story about psychic aborted foetuses that come back to life and feed on blood. Morbid subject matter, handled skillfully and entertainingly.

Unfortunately, the character development is rather light and the twist at the end was extremely predictable. A little more work on that side of things, and it could have been a classic. Apart from that, its worth reading if you're looking for something gruesome.

The most insanely twisted novel ever written...

The most amazing piece of sleazy shock horror I ever read was the novel SPAWN by Shaun Hutson, about a retarded janitor at a hospital... his job was to shovel the aborted fetuses into an oven. But he feels sorry for them, see? So he saves three and buries them under an electrical pylon during a thunderstorm. Just like Frankenstein, lightning bolts bring the bodies back to life as telepathic mutant zombies! They command the retard to bring them victims so they can drink their blood! WTF? Hysterical. Also in the same vein by Hutson were SLUGS (made into a movie!), SLUGS 2: BREEDING GROUND and EREBUS.

I read this book when I was 14 at school - roughly 14 years ago now.
The teacher came down to the bottom of the class where I was hunched over this book - I hadn't noticed the room had gone quiet or that he was looming over me until his hand slapped down on the page.
He took it to the front and flicked through a couple of pages and then with a voice of disgust advised that this was not the sort of thing nice people read.
When I got home with my book that night I promised myself I would finish it now just to spite him.
It was utterly terrifying. Aborted featuses, loss of life.
I only read it the once but have always remembered being afraid and I associate this book with my independance, the first time I exercised my will against teacher bullies!

This is one of those books that I assumed was self-published. Realy. While I didn't find any spelling errors I did fine enough logical and continuity errors to fail a freshman Lit student! The book was GREAT however!!!

Read it, know it, be it!

I wasn't aware that, when an abortion is performed in Britain, the fetus is sent to the basement in a basket where a depressed caretaker throws it in the incinerator!!! Well; USED too - now he does different things with those fetuses....
I'll leave Shaun to tell you about what.

Anyway - loved it, didn't much manage to respect it - but LOVED it!!!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: READER BEWARE: This volume requires you to read outside mini-series.
- Violator, Angela, Spawn: Blood Feud, and Youngblood issues 7 & 8

OK, Let me just start by saying that I've been on the Spawn-wagon since day 1.
I have the entire series in comic format.
All the mini-series & spin-off's.
Basically every comic he's ever appeared in.
So trust me when I say, that this volume as it is, is incomplete.
It collects issues 13 through 33, but doesn't include any crossovers that are necessary to fill various plot holes you'll encounter.

REQUIREMENTS:

- THE VIOLATOR (Mini-Series) - Occurs during issues 21 through 23.
(As far as I can tell, there is no trade-paper-back that collects these.)

- ANGELA (Mini-Series) - Occurs between Issues 28 & 29
(This one is 100% necessary, And yes there is a TPB, but it's rare, not as rare as the comics though.)

- SPAWN: BLOOD FEUD (Mini-Series) - Occurs between issues 32 & 33
(The prelude of which can only be found in comic format, as a 6-page addition to issue #32. And once again no TPB that collects this
mini-series, which is crucial to the Spawn storyline, as many future issues refer back to this mini-series.)

- YOUNGBLLOD #7 - occurs after issue #23 - (not necessary to the plot) -You only need this issue if you want to see where Overtkill winds up after Twitch fires a bullet into his ear.

- YOUNGBLOOD #8 - occurs before issue #27
(Unfortunately this one is also necessary reading, as it contains the death of 2 major Spawn characters. I'm not gonna ruin it for you, by telling you which ones.)

In conclusion, I'd like to say,
I would've given this collection 5 stars, but it's incomplete.
Aside from which, issues 19 & 20 are retarded.
(The arc concerning Houdini as a dimensional-traveling hyper-mage,
a flying car,
and a Spawn suit that can produce anything with just a thought.)
Like I said, retarded. A stain on Spawn's reputation.
Other than that, the writing is superb, and the art is amazing.
Action-packed horror/fantasy for any comic-book junkie. Old or new.

After being introduced to this comic by a friend of mine I was instantly hooked!! This comic is thought provoking and deep, fans of batman will love Capullo's art style and will also love Spawn's self loathing lines! Though this book is Great, I believe no one under 13 should read it, there is gore and brief scenes of nudity but don't let that stop you from picking this one up now, YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!!!

Review Date: 2007-08-28
WARNING THIS VOLUME IS MISSING AN ENTIRE PAGE OF DIALOGUE.
(Or at least the version I have does)
(The edition I purchased has a different cover than the one shown on Amazon.
The cover-art to the version I own, is the cover from issue #43)

I'd like to start by saying, I love Spawn!!!!!
I can't stress that enough. (I own everything with his name on it)
It's because of this love, that I am so critical of this collection.
which has been less than stellar thus far.
If you've gotten this far into the series,
you definitely don't need me to tell you what this tale is all about.

In this volume:
- Spawn discovers he has even more powers than before
(which at this point, is par for the course),

- After a particularly gruesome encounter with 'The Curse'
his symbiotic costume goes full-tilt-boogie.

- Cygor the cybernetic gorilla goes on a rampage.

- & Spawn goes to hell.

- There are some heart warming stories in this collection as well.
(The christmas one springs to mind)

- And some tales that deal with real issues like racism & child abuse.

But there are 2 problems you'll find with this particular collection:
1. Two issues are listed as #38.
Be rest assured though that the Christmas issue is indeed #39
2. Page 9 on Issue #48 is missing all of it's dialogue. (Bravo editors)
Which will make page 10 really confusing.

Because I'm a fan and really want other people to enjoy this series.
Here's the dialogue that should accompany page 9 of issue #48.
1st Panel:
- Cog - "SPAWN! AL! Why are you doing this to yourself?"
"Contiuing to play into the devils hands."
"Or maybe it's not you."
"Maybe the costume has finally taken total control."
- Spawn - "The costume has nothing to do with this."
- Cog - "Oh really?"
2nd Panel:
- Spawn - "Yes!"
3rd Panel:
- Cog - "So you're purposely building this prison on your own."
4th Panel:
- Cog - "Trying to isolate yourself from others."
"Hide from life's realities."
- Spawn - "Yeah that's it."
"But now you know where I'm at."
"So I guess I've failed"
- Cog - "You don't know the half of it."

As a result of these mistakes,
I didn't give this collection the 5 stars it deserved.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
All the greatest hero's have tortured hearts.

I still read comics, and Spawn was the new big thing, peaking in 1997 with a Hollywood movie. However, I lost most of my comic humor with Spawn out of fear of being labeled racist, with the lead character being of African American ancestry, there were a number of racist currents and still are as the Spawn book continues today. His costume is cool- that's the thing- if Spawn were nota black guy much as is the case with DC's Steel character, it would just scream white supremacist all over it. I am not judging the Spawn comics by his skin color, in fact the exact opposite- I will warn you this contains a number of highly racist themes much like The Sandman. Collects Spawn like issues 21 to 26 or something. :)

I've never read a Spawn book before, but after reading Spawn 5 I'm going to read them all!

I enjoyed the level of depth that that the writers used and how they left me hanging at the end because the odd man-who-was-changed-into-a-demon is helped by Spawn.

I really like the level of artistry that the Spawn books have. Many of Marvel's books are black and white and I HATE THAT! We got rid of black and white tv LONG AGO and black and white comics before that, WHY would we go back to black and white comics? Sorry, yes I think you should buy Spawn 5, and I recommend it for it's level of character and story depth and high standard of artistry.

In the shole scheme of things, this is where Spawn is starting to lose its edge. The begining was cool and new and Marvel-less, but how many more issues can we stand where the whining thing that was once Al Simmons and is now Spawn bitches how he got shafted by Malebolgia and boo-hoo he misses the life and wife he used to have. C'mon. Play another song. Will someone change the channel. Now...in the comic book scheme of things, rehashing the original story tidbids has been widely accepted for a long, long time. (Ever read X-Men issues after Giant-Size # 1? Could they mention that Wolverine's claws are made of adamantium just one more time???) So it has been the norm in the genre....but it grows ponderous. The story (aside from all the gaps from the spin-off chronicles of the Violator, Angela, Youngbloods, etc...)begins to wane. New characters (mostly villians that seem designed straight for the McFarlane Toy line) come in for an issue or two and go just as quick. Ho-hum. Will someone call me a taxi and get me a copy of Wetworks to go? I need to leave this mess.
