Being a bit of a nostalgia freak, I have more than a few books highlighting 50s and 60s pop culture. This is my second favorite, with only Populuxe rating higher. It's a memory-invoking rush of nostalgic nosh, with plenty for your mind to delightfully delight in. You'll treasure this book. Ton of full color pictures and lively appreciative writing makes you want to read this book again and again. Holy Nostalgia, Batman!

After hearing about this both the book and the CD, both by Hal Lifson, I just had to get these. I could not put this book down. I called my mother about it and thanked her for letting me born in such a cool year! I have always been a fanatic for that type of pop culture in the '60's. My sister once told me that I was born twenty years too late! After reading this book, I couldn't agree with her more! If you know someone who was born in 1966, and looking for a birthday gift for them, look no further than this book. This book rocks, and so does Hal Lifson!

What a groovy book, baby! I was only three years old in 1966 but I remember just about everything in this delightful scrapbook that's a time capsule for everything from that hip decade.

Hal Lifson has collected photos, ads, album covers, toys, etc. that brings back a very cool, swingin' period in American culture. The Beatles, Batman, James Bond, Playboy, Nancy Sinatra--they're all here!

Definitely a book for anyone alive at the time. Or anyone interested in what that was like.

Unbelievable!

Hal Lifson took me on a journey that was so exciting, I couldn't stand it! From Batman to The Monkees to the Beach Boys song "Wouldn't It Be Nice", I feel like I've relived my childhood all over again. Now if I only had my Batman utility belt again....

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take that journey, even if you weren't born yet!

The Ultimate Time Machine

Review Date: 2003-06-13
"Hal Lifson's 1966" is, indeed, the ultimate time machine. It works on two distinct levels. First, having lived in the San Fernando Valley during that period, I found the book to be the most delightful, teary-eyed journey back to the old stomping grounds...who says you can't go back home?! To see a picture of the old Encino Bowl...the last time I even thought about it was when I was sneaking a smoke in the parking lot on the way back from ELEMENTARY school! Second, and more important (yes, important), "Hal Lifson's 1966" captures the innocence of the period...perhaps the last innocence the country enjoyed before it was forced to grow up during the Watergate hearings. Indeed, the lack of any political references keeps the journey a magical mystery tour. Honey West, Catwoman, NANCY SINATRA...many a 13-year-old boy lost his innocence "appreciating" these classically sexy women. Thanks, Hal.

I adore Goosebumps because I like scary books. The best parts are the funny parts. I get frightened and put the book down and stare at the wall, thinking why am I scared. That's why I give this book 5 stars.

I loved it! It was very interesting, I could'nt put it down! I'm over thirteen years old but i still love it. What i like about the goosebumps series is that every age group usually loves it! This book strayed a little away from what I have known R.L. Stine to write, but it was still good. The title is deceptive though. It says "The Haunted School", but this book wasn't really about ghosts. I think a better title would be "The secret of grayworld"

One of the BEST Goosebumps....

This is my favorite Goosebumps book of all time!

I loved the plot and thought that it was amazing. The story is basically about kids from the school from earlier years to when the book takes place who are trapped inside the wall! How original?

This is the best in the series, and everyone who love(s) this series will love this one.

I found this book to be both practical and inspiring. The journal in the back of the book gave me additional references to look up and a space to record my thoughts. This is a book that can be read by an individual or enjoyed in a group. It offers the reader something to reflect on and grow from each time you pick it up.

Stormie Omartain has long been one of my favorite authors. She shares her personal experiences with her readers. She reminds us that when God called Abram, He did not hand him a detailed map. He called Abram (Abraham) to follow. God still calls us to follow. We are to follow Him through faith. We are to live for Him day by day. He gives us strength and grace for each day and faith to face tomorrow. "Regardless of what your situation is at this moment, God has an abundance of blessings for you."
We want to see what tomorrow will bring, but that is not God's way. Stormie Omartain's style is simple and easy-to-understand. She shares her story and faith in a manner that keeps the reader reading. Each chapter contains supporting scripture and prayer. There is a Prayer and Study Guide included. Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On would make a very good group study. Ms. Omartian and I share beliefs.. As my faith has matured, I have learned to depend on God. He has never let me down. Storms of life strike all of us; if we would only turn to Him in prayer before, during, and after the storm, we would have the assurance that He is with us. Ms. Omartian is a prolific author. She sheds light on how to experience the joy of living a life walking with God. I strongly recommend Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On to all.

I was in a very dark, depressed in my life when I picked up this book. Immediately, the dark began lifting and hope settled in. Since then, I have bought and given this book to over 30 people who were struggling with life's hurts, disappointments and tragedies. They too, were able to gain a greater hope from God who desires to be our strength and comfort through every aspect of life. I am right now purchasing another for a dear friend struggling through illness. When life seems crumbling and there is no hope, God wants you to know He is there giving you "just enough light for the step you are on." Hope is a person, Jesus Christ, who imparts peace no matter your struggle.

This book was a lifesaver for me. It put light into my dark, dim world. When I found this book, I was in a severe depression, going through a most difficult time in my life. I credit it with saving me. And I give glory to God for putting it in my hands.

No matter where you are in your life, this book will benefit you. You don't have to be as low as I was for this book to bless you. It is a must read for everyone!!

It is worth every dime that it cost and then some. Once you read it, you will want to put it next to your bible and keep it forever.

It means so much to me that I purchase it for everyone that I cross paths with, who seems to be in need of faith, love, comfort, and/or support. I use it as a way to minister to those in need.

You will LOVE it!

The book is well written and entertaining. The story was nicely presented around the letters of Mary Pringle. All the similar names of the characters make it a little confusing. A nice reference chart showing the relationship of the characters should be included at the beginning of the book. Did the author hide some things to make the family look better? I wonder. It's hard for a Northerner to muster up a lot of sympathy for this family of slave owners. Perhaps Julius, who likely became a Unionist, was the real hero of the family. It's ironic that the South nearly destroyed our country in the 1860's, but is saving it today.

Mary's World helped me to understand life in the Antebellum South and the culture that thrived on slavery. But it also showed the North's response to winning the Civil War, which was anything but forgiving. It was a thrill to see the Miles Brewton House and the St. Michael's Cemetary on my recent visit to Charleston, and to feel the connection with the Mottes, Alstons, and Pringles.

In Mary's World Richard N. Cote has succeeded admirably where so many others have tried and yet missed the mark. With his succinct style and exceptional organizational skills he has laid bare the thoughts, emotions and lives of Mary Pringle, her family and their slaves, and done so in a way that has given us a book
that is informative as well as enjoyable. By putting their lives
into context with the times Mr Cote has given the reader not only the opportunity to learn what they thought and felt but the ability to understand why they thought and felt the way they
did. This book will appeal to historians and the average reader
alike.
It took me only 2 days to read Mary's World and I found myself
so absorbed that when interrupted I was momentarily confused to find I wasn't in 19th century Charleston.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN ANTEBELLUM CULTURE AND THE CIVIL WAR, THIS IS A MUST READ. EVEN FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T A STUDENT OF THE ERA, "MARY'S WORLD" IS STILL A FASCINATING GLIMPSE OF THE LIFE OF AN ELITE SOUTHERN PLANTER FAMILY. TAKEN FROM FAMILY PAPERS, THE STORY OF THE PRINGLES IS A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT OF THEIR INNERMOST THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS.

THE READER GETS TO WATCH WILLIAM BULL AND MARY ALSTON PRINGLE'S CHILDREN GROW UP. BY THE END OF THE BOOK YOU FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE KNOWN THEM ALL. I DREADED FINISHING THE BOOK BECAUSE I FELT AS IF I WAS LEAVING OLD FRIENDS.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND MAKE TIME FOR THIS BOOK. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE AN "ANTEBELLUM-OPHILE" LIKE ME OR NOT, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK.

I haven't been a DBA for very long and although this book has everything in it explained very well, I'm not sure that I would recommend it for beginners. Beginners need more detail, which understandbly you can't fit into any one book. But this is definetely excellent as reference material to start you off in the right direction. I wouldn't dare do standby without it!

Overwhelming amount of information & essential for 24x7

While this comprehensive book is a definitive and complete reference for Oracle DBAs who need to support mission-critical databases, it is also a key reference for developing a comprehensive high-availability posture in Oracle-centric enterprises.

This book focuses on making Oracle highly available and resilient, but also touches on related aspects, such as hardware, operating systems and networks. What I particularly liked is the way the book begins, with an exceptionally well-written chapter on identifying your uptime requirements. All of the material here applies to availability and reliability of enterprise-wide systems, not just Oracle. In fact, Parts I and II of this book should be read by anyone who is responsible for implementing and managing a 24x7 enterprise regardless of whether they are a DBA because the information in the first two parts of this eight-part book will have the whole team (SAs, DBAs, network analysts and service delivery/support staff) using a common framework.

The remaining six parts span chapters 7 through 20 and are specific to Oracle. There is an overwhelming amount of information here. What makes getting through these chapters so hard is the fact that nearly every page has some important tip, fact or technique. The sheer number of these, all of which are important, will consume two or three highlighters before you get to the end of the book

Overall, this book is essential for Oracle DBAs, and deserves a place in the library of every architect and operations manager in large 24x7 enterprises that use Oracle .

This is the only book I've read that refers to multiplexing and mirring the control file in words you can actually understand! I now understand the impact of both techniques, and I can make a quick decision on how best to use the features. You'll want this book after being exposed to all the other material on Oracle, because then you can appreciate the subject matter. There tends to be a "confusion zone" surrounding Oracle learning because the Oracle database tends to be so over-engineered in some areas. I'm sure the information in this book will apply to version 9i as well. Good job on what I've read so far.

I've read several Sweet Dreams series book, but this is the only one whose title I remember. It's a tear-jerker, and even though at 9 years old I was too young to know about boyfriends and girlfriends and those types of relationships, I could still empathize with Mariah's pain.

I wish I had a copy of this book. It's very memorable.

When I was in 9th grade a friend of mine gave me this book, I didn't even ask for it she just said here read this and let me know what you think. So I read it and I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters. I live in Orange County Calif. and I could imagine everything they were talking about even Palm Springs. Im 27 now, I must have read that book at least 20 times. Im here on amazon to purchase another because I gave it to another friend years ago and she gave it to anohter and so on. That book takes me to another place and I will always remember how special this book means to me.

A Poignant Book for Teens

Review Date: 2004-03-18
I first read P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin 11 or 12 years ago when I happened to come across it at a second-hand book sale. Even as an eleven-year-old, I thought the title was corny. Nevertheless, I was drawn to purchasing the book because of the cover photo - a beautiful girl with the straightest brown hair ever and sad soulful eyes.

At the time, I had had no experience of ever falling in love. The most I'd experienced was a few shy crushes, but once I started reading the book, I absolutely fell in love with it. Barbara Conklin did an amazing job of writing from the perspective of a sixteen-year-old, and it is no wonder that this book was a sure hit with its target audience: teenagers.

Teenagers will be able to identify with all that Mariah (the main character) feels. You can relate to the bliss of falling in love, and even though I myself was inexperienced in love, it described first love in the way I imagined it to be - and also turned out to be. Also, when you read about Mariah's insecurities and what Paul Strobe (the heartthrob) will think of her if he finds out she's never had a boyfriend, it will remind you of your own experiences. Perhaps now as an adult, these matters seem trivial, but as a teen, you could totally understand why she panicked and felt the need to "impress" Paul...

I must have read P.S. I Love You more than a dozen times that first summer I had the fortune of finding it. Each time, I never failed to have tears in my eyes. In fact, it doesn't matter how many times you've read it because the ending will always bring you to tears. But don't misunderstand me: this isn't a book filled with misery and by no means is it a tragedy. The realistic side of portraying what it is like to lose love is surely an important life lesson for all teens, and the humorous parts will also bring you much laughter.

After each reading, I always wish that Barbara Conklin could have written a happier ending. After all, we all have a part of us that wishes for the fairy-tale ending of Mariah and Paul living happily ever after! Admittedly, there is a small part in all of us that wishes first love could last forever...

But Barbara Conklin has ended the book as she has for a good reason: she shows us how it is possible to go on even when love has been lost. You will admire Mariah's strength and courage in overcoming her loss and also the poignancy in how she keeps Paul alive in her memories.

P.S. I Love You was the first teen romance I read, and the one that paved the path to reading more. More than a decade after reading teen romances, P.S. I Love You remains the only story I remember. I recommend this book to all teens who are interested in teen romances. One word of advice: don't throw this book away! I did and regretted it terribly! I've just purchased a used copy online again and am infinitely happy to possess it again. When I read the story now as an adult, it seems a little too simple and innocent, but it is definitely a book I would like to pass on to my own daughter in the future, when she herself becomes a teenager.

For a very long time, this book was "Unavailable" or "Out of Print". Naturally, I found that intriguing. When this book became available to order, I wasted no time. I feel my wait was certainly rewarded.

Michael's prose is magnetic. It's as if I'm drawn to read faster and faster. These types of reads are rare, to me. Character development was effective, and the storyline is wonderful, even if controversial.

To anyone who likes Cold War books, this is a must-read. For those who want a good story to read, pick this up. I know your money will be well spent!

Everything you would like to know about Route 66. This book and it's author served as the main source of infromation & inspiration for the Disney/Pixar classic animated movie "Cars". A must have for the motoring history buff.

As we get older we appreciate memories from our youth more and more. I can remember riding in my parents car on trips along Route 66. This book is full of memories and interesting information about this historic road. We plan to take the Lincoln Highway from California to New York and come home on Route 66. We bought this book as our travel guide home and plan to visit many of the places listed in its pages. We also bought The Lincoln Highway: Coast to Coast for our guide book east. Both books are a must for the adventure we are planning; a cross country trip in our 1941 Oldsmobile street rod.

By looking at five different aspects of our personalities, we can see how our uniqueness in each of the areas combines to create an incredible potpourri of advantages and opportunities. Through an examination of spiritual gifts, passion, abilities, personality and life experiences, the author takes us on a journey to understanding our original divine design. With copious quotes, lists, and reflection questions, the author forces the reader into a very personal examination of the way that they are hard-wired. The The appendices are not superfluous but take the user on a journey that is exciting and filled with potential. It would be difficult to read this book and not emerge more confident and self-assured.

This book helped confirm the strengths I felt I had. The assessment really opened my eyes to the specific ways my spiritual strengths can be used to help others. I also appreciated the part of the book about having a board of advisors and a training partner. We can learn a lot from the people God has put in our life.

Finally a book that informs me that I can be me....

This book was a great follow up to the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. While Warren's book helped me understand that God created me for a purpose, SHAPE helped me discover how I am made to achieve this purpose and the practical steps to put this purpose into action!
Since reading both these books, God has revealed my purpose and shape to me and I am dedicating my life to becoming a marriage and family therapist. I am currently working in the field and going to school to get licensed as a therapist!

St. Therese has a lot to say to this day and age. Her "Little Way" is so simple and based on love. I have personally found Story of a Soul very useful in my spiritual life. Even though she is a saint, she is very easy to relate to where ever you are in life's journey. It is a book that I certainly will be reading again as it has made such an impact on my life. Saint Therese may be called The Little Flower but after reading this you realise that she is a stirdy little flower made of steel! A lot of people can be put off her by how she is portrayed, as was I before I read about her life in her words. So get to know her!

A devotional classic is excellent introduction to this Saint

This book is a great place to start learning about Therese. Includes the full text of the autobiography, and some supplementary material incl. a introduction to the autobiography and life of Therese and some of her letters and prayers. You can get much of this stuff online, but the book is a delight, with many pictures.

Therese is a very special person, and I recommend a familiarity with her beautiful soul.

An obsolete translation, from an inauthentic manuscript, of a great book

Rev. Thomas Taylor's early 20th century translation of the memoir of St. Therese of Lisieux was made from the only manuscript then available outside her monastery, one substantially rewritten by Therese's sister Pauline, who made five thousand changes. Scholars interested in the documents which gave rise to the cult of St. Therese may wish to consult it. I urge those who want to read what Therese wrote to read the third edition of "Story of a Soul" translated by Fr. John Clarke, OCD, and published by ICS Publications in 1976. The Clarke translation, made from the unretouched manuscript written by Therese (which was published in French only in 1956), is recognized as the standard throughout the English-speaking world. No other translation compares to it. Whether you have not read "Story of a Soul" or have read only earlier English translations (Taylor, Knox, Beevers), the Clarke translation will open the world of Therese to you. Don't miss it. You'll find it at Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux, Third Edition

It is a well written, inspirational text. I really liked the historical aspects as well as the religious excerpts. Great book for anyone experiencing an ongoing illness. It helps to put the disease in perspective. :)
