This was a really, really good book. I loved the first book in this series. It was called Blackjack. Frosty is the second book and it is really neat. I don't like horse books that talk more about the people and who likes who or who is going to be their new boyfriend. I want to read about horses! These books are all about horses. The people seem real and so do the horses. In Blackjack, the horse hated to canter on one lead, just like the horse that I ride in my lessons. And Frosty does a lot of stuff that my lesson horse Jess does too. You should read this book if you like horses.

a neat horse book-I loved it!

This is a really cool horse book. I read the other book in the series last year. It is called Blackjack. This one was even better!!! I didn't know how Blackjack would get cured or how Heather and Frosty would get out of the woods. I read it really fast too cause I didn't want to stop.

A neat new series! I love it!!!

The adventurous sequel to Ellen F. Feld's novel, "Blackjack", Frosty: The Adventures Of A Morgan Horse is a thoroughly delightful novel for young readers about a girl and her relationship with powerful and noble animals. Heather Richardson, owner of the horse Blackjack, is entrusted with a rare gray Morgan named Frosty. Heather learns to her disappointment that not all horses are meant for the show ring, yet she also discovers that Frosty's strength lies in trail riding as she and Frosty must learn to work together to survive the woods of Vermont. Frosty is a story to be cherished by horse lovers of all ages.

This book, by Guilbert and Park, is the "Bible" for any economic geologist on ore deposits. As a graduate student in geology, I am constantly using it as a reference and use it more frequently than any other book I have. We used another textbook for my economic geology course, but all of us referred to "The Geology of Ore Deposits" when some info was needed. It is also on several professers shelves as well. Well organized and easy to find specific info.

Review Date: 2008-01-23
This is a book on the geology of ore deposits. It is not a book on exploration techniques. Although most of the geology described in this book is on land, there is also discussion of submarine volcanics and oceanic manganese nodules.

Carbonatites are mentioned as bearers of various metals, notably the REEs (rare earths). The authors treat carbonatites as strictly igneous rocks, comparable to kimberlites. The REE-rich Mountain Pass carbonatite of California is mentioned, but not the larger one at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia.

Pegmatites are featured as important carriers of precious metals. These include common metals, as well as exotic ones such as niobium, tantalum, rare earths, and many more. REEs are often found concentrated in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of pegmatites (p. 198). Most pegmatites are late-stage magmatic products, enriched in volatiles as well as elements that don't "fit" the matrices of the common granitic minerals.

Many economic deposits are the result of concentration by alteration processes. Apropos to this, a helpful table of the relative mobility of ions is included (p. 780). Attention is also devoted to skarn deposits.

Details are given about such things as porphyry copper deposits, various hydrothermal deposits, massive sulphide deposits, BIFs (banded iron formations) Mississippi-Valley type deposits, uranium deposits, bauxite, and much more. The chapter on placer deposits includes sketches of important auriferous placers.

There are several schematic sketches in this book. These include such things as the zonal distribution of metal deposits in a lithologic sequence.

Classic textbook, comprehensive and entertaining

More than 20 years after its publication, this book is still (and deservedly) probably the most widely used text on the origin, description and classification of ore deposits. It is written in an entertaining style and provides enjoyment to the reader on a subject that could easily become dry. In 1986, when this book first appeared, many processes of ore formation were suspected but not scientifically proven. Most have since been proven, and Guilbert and Park have been proven correct in their assumptions. The book is in general very comprehensive, although it lacks any description of iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits, the first of which (Olympic Dam in South Australia) was discovered in 1976. For an up-to-date text, the reader can consult the "recent classic" by Robb Introduction to Ore-Forming Processes. The community of geologists has been extraordinarily industrious over the period between the publication of these two books.

I did not buy this at Amazon. I wasn't even looking for it necessarily, because I didn't know that it was even in existence. I stumbled upon it for $5, but this collection of devotions, based off of the historic lectionary is worth far more than $20. Dr. C.F.W. Walther had a way of making the Gospel fresh again. I recommend, no I urge you to buy this product if you haven't already.

I regret not having reviewed this work before. I thought I had and confess that I did contact the translator,Grabenhofer, shortly after its release by CPH, St. Louis to thank him for this great work of translation of a devotional that is centered on the historic lectionary and God granted exegetical insight of Walther. I consider this and "Luther's Family Devotions for Every Day of the Church Year" originally edited in the late 19th century (found in many German-American Lutheran homes)and translated by Joel Baseley as two "must have" tombs. We often fall short in our time in daily devotions, but both of these works are a blessing to help keep one centered in faith and hope based solely upon Scripture.

If you are tired of the insipid power point material that makes up most devotions (and sermons) today (and many appear to be nothing more than thoughtless rush jobs on a word processor by pastors and evangelists needing to pay some overdue bills), sink your teeth into the nearly 1,000 pages of selections from C.F.W. Walther's sermons that fill this book. Walther had a razor-sharp theological mind deeply grounded in classic Lutheran/scriptural teaching , an excellent pastoral sensibility, and superb expressive abilities. If you love Luther, you will love Walther. This man was the real McCoy and this book is an excellent devotional.

Exceptionally Good Daily Devotional

Review Date: 2006-09-11
This is truly an excellent daily devotional, for it is uplifting as only true and correct Scripture expositon can: rightly dividing Law and Gospel, and at such a wonderfully low price for buying as gifts, etc.

Here is an avid student of doing just that, C.F.W. Walther and a sermon exerpt of his for every day of the year arranged around the One Year Lectionary. The Sunday's sermon is exploding and explored for each day accompanied by a select hymn verse, which easily can provide the closing prayer that many like in a daily devotion format.

I've been through now around one third of this, and am truly impressed with the selection of Walther sermon exerpts and am refershed, inspired and daily motivated from this man's interpretation and application of God's Word. He is truly a master at interjecting human psychology and thinking into the equation, which makes perfect jumping off point into pool of Law and Gospel. As but one example, this from Sunday of 14th Week after Trinity: "Each person is surrounded and covered by God's blessings even more than he is by air. ... It is, therefore, impossible for a person to count the blessings God shows him during even one hour. ... If, however, the bodily blessings of God are for the most part unrecognized by most people, the spiritual blessings are even more ignored. ... They regard spiritual things as a yoke they must bear in this world and they would prefer it if there were no God they should serve, no Word of God they should hear and obey, and no eternity about which they should worry."

To God be all glory!

I was surprised at how relevant and lively Walther's writings are in this context. The book is organized around the historic lectionary, but one could use this quite profitably in any case. Many of these "devotions" seem to come from his sermons, and they are just as useful today as I'm sure they were when written. I didn't expect much from this book (bought it purely on the recommendation of a friend), and it has completely "overperformed." For this price, it's the best bargain you'll get all year.

The Law is good BUT it is powerless to change us into its demands
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-09
This is an outstanding book for understanding a theology of grace and its implications for how we treat other people.

Zahl's section on anthropology, setting up his soteriology, is insightful. His argument for the "unfree will" is compelling as he makes us look hard at the realities of addictions, anger, depression, losing weight, etc. To tell someone to have a positive attitude when they are struggling with depression is inhumane. The Gospel is not about us pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. It is about Someone loving us when we are stuck, powerless and without hope.

Summary: Grace is One Way Love. Law is Two Way Love. The Law is good because it reveals God's standard. BUT the law is powerless to change us into those demands. Only Grace can do this. Christ loved us while we were yet sinners. May we learn to treat others the same way.

Paul Zahl is a scholar and a dean of Trinity Episcopal school for Ministry: his GRACE IN PRACTICE: A THEOLOGY OF EVERYDAY LIFE is for any who would understand how the state of grace interacts with law, church and society. Zahl's expanded view of grace embraces interpersonal, social and political actions alike, and provides college-level readers and collections strong in spirituality with a scholarly survey perfect for classroom debates and in-depth understanding.

Breathing Fresh Air Again!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-14
On the messy world of contemporary American Evangelicalism, filled with moralistic would-be theologies and sermons about "5 ways to improve your life," "8 ways to be a man of integrity," "5 Pervasive Paths to Prayer"(all beginning with the letter 'P'), and "31 ways to be a Proverbs 31 woman," a light has dawned!

Paul Zahl's book, "Grace in Practice," breathes fresh air into the lungs of any burned-out (or soon to be burned out) Christian. Tossing out the tired, moralistic approaches to Christianity that are popular but which bury the true message of the faith (the Vox Ipsissimi Christianismi), Zahl goes back to the basics of the Christian Gospel--namely, Christ's unmeritted, one-way love to sinners (including Christian sinners).

Zahl stresses the early Reformational insights of distinguishing Law and Gospel, Low Anthropology and High Christology, Judgment and Love. His understanding (which is not his alone, but is a largely-forgotten treasure shared by Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and Cranmer) that Grace actually produces what the Law commands is life-changing.

Anyone, especially any clergy person who is in need of the refreshing truth of God's Grace, which trumps all other messages, needs to look no further than "Grace in Practice." This book, which concretizes God's grace in all aspects of life (and is chuck-full of great movie quotes!) will hopefully shake-up and shake-off the toxic and widespread moralism of current American Christianity.

When a book gets positive endorsements from both Ligon Duncan, conservative PCA pastor, and Peter Gomes, openly gay theologian at Harvard Divinity school, you know that you are holding an anomaly.

This book is about all about grace. How does grace relate to Law and to other fundamental Christian doctrines? Zahl argues for an expansive view of grace in all areas of life - family, society, and the church. He writes in a lively conversational tone, and sprinkles in a lot of references to popular culture. This book is not dull, and the author was not afraid to hit hard, challenging me on several fronts.

However, there are points of disagreement. For example, in speaking about "Grace in the pulpit", he says, "Sermons should be brief... a minimum of ten minutes and a maximum of twenty. This has everything to do with the humility and the grace-full deference of the preacher." Ligon Duncan, one of my favorite preachers, will speak for an hour on biblical doctrines (like grace) out of the conviction that the hearing of the Word of God preached is a fundamental mark of a biblical church. And when he does so, people leave wishing that he could have preached longer.

So, this book sits as an anomaly. I would suggest it to some who are up for the challenge, but for most people I would recommend other books if they are looking to go deep in their study of grace.

A Tour De Force on Living Gracefully

Paul Zahl writes triumphantly of the more-than conquering grace that flows from God in his unconditional "one-way" love. Zahl effectively defines grace and, more importantly, shows us how to experience and give grace in all areas of our lives. In effect, "Grace in Practice" is a life-changing book, as it will provide all that is needed to make all of your relationships "grace-full."

Zahl begins the book by writing extensively about the reality of grace and its conflict with law and judgment. This explanation of grace lays a firm foundation upon which Zahl builds the remaining two-thirds of the book. In Zahl's theology, there is a war between grace and law, and grace is man's only hope through which all blessings flow.

This is NOT a book only for theologians and "professional" Christians. As Zahl explains, the "focus is on everyday life..on how Christianity works...an attempt to bring the gospel of law and grace into direct encounter with the real and tangible stress of living a life within the swooning, human world."

Zahl reveals his uncanny gift of knowing the pulse of the church and the culture. In that gift, he stands alone among writers I have read as someone who relates the mysteries of Christ to matters of everyday life.

His chapter on "Grace in Families" has the insights to improve all of your relationships more than any "relationship" or "marriage" book I have yet read. "Grace in Church" shows the level of learning from experience that Zahl has garnered from over 30 years in ministry. These sections will open the eyes of ministers from all areas and ages.

"Grace in Society" and "Grace in Everything" round out the above sections. If there is any weakness in this profound exhortation to grace it is in the "Grace in Society" section, as I think Zahl leaves some important matters unaddressed in relation to dealing with criminals and terrorist states. In all others areas, his writings of grace are fully applicable and practical; however, in dealing with criminals and aggressive states, the practical application is lacking.

There are few writers or theologians who can effectively balance such writing with quotes from famed theologians along side quotes of vignettes from South Park, Hollywood or the like of The Beatles and Stephen King. Zahl pulls it off masterfully. All sorts of readers will be able to find answers to life's biggest questions and challenges in this book and will find it enjoyable and a pleasure to read.

I usually avoid reading self-help books because those are boring, serious, and most of all, makes you feel guilty. They try to tell you why you are wrong and why the author is right. I don't like the tone of such books. Although Ted calls this book a self-help book on having fun, I did not feel I was reading a self-help book. I was excited. It was like reading Jonathan Livingston Seagull fourteen years ago!

Gramma Knows the F-Word is the BEST BOOK YOU'LL READ EVER!!! This book is an easy feel-good read. You can hear Mr. Schredd willing you to have fun and have a more easy-going, stress-free life. The book is based on a letter the author's Gramma Schredd gave him at the beginning of his life-changing bike ride across North America in the early 90's. In this system of "Me, me, ME!" and "Whoever dies with the most toys, WINS!", it is refreshing to read a book the urges you to have fun, be silly, be kind, and don't be so concerned with what you have but rather, who you are. The book is filled with fun-loving cartoons made by the author and thought-provoking captions and quotes. Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.

Written in manner that any investor will be able to benefit from Michael's sound advice. While I believe that in general annuities are the most oversold product in financial circles (not becuse they are great product but because sellers earn huge commissions), Michael clearly demonstrates that annuities are appropriate in certain situations and tells you how to avoid the annuities that were designed to be sold not bought. He shows you what to type of product to look for when annuities are appropriate. Highly recommended.

Corrigan's descriptions make the characters so real that I could not put this book down....waiting to see what would happen next. Ladies, you'll fall in love with Archer and the guys will fall for GWEN. It's a great story....there was never a dull moment.I can't wait for the sequel.

Gwen is a woman ahead of her time. A strong woman dealing with a very harsh world. Anyone who roots for those who are oppressed will feel satisfaction when reading this tale.

A great read that pulls the reader to find out what will happen next. Gwen is a great heroine who is strong, assertive, caring, loving and also extremely feminine. Unforgetable characters like Galen and The Archer intertwine with a timeless story of good people trying to overcome evil, while love blossoms. The plot moves at breakneck speed, reminiscent of Mary Higgins Clark, even helped along by the occasional guardian angel. I can't wait for the sequel to return to the haunting and exciting world of Wellstitch Castle!!

Charles Edwin Price, along with other folklorists, such as Michael Paul Henson and William Lynwood Montell, is the perfect storyteller of supernatural legends in Appalacia. This is a wonderful compilation of such stories in that it is educational as well as entertaining, for he includes informative motifs with each legend he tells. A must-have for collectors of folklore, and those interested in a good read, whether or not they believe in the supernatural.

I was born and raised in Kingsport and I even met the author of this book when he came to my high school in 1996. The name is a little hokey but the book is extremely well written and the research is very good, it even includes some newspaper clippings. This book is well worth the price and the read!

I grew up around the area he is speaking of in this book. I remember many of these things happening myself. I was so glad to know I was not the only one to experience these strange things. I loved this book! I can't wait to buy more!

Well worth the time and money...

This is a fascinating book. The places are real (and some are rather creepy) and the stories are supposedly true. Every story will draw you in. The history and research the author did was extensive. This is a book you could very well (regretfully) finish in one sitting.

This was a very suspenseful book. It has many short stories in it and all are suppose to be true. Many are folklore that was passed down and most have some eyewitness testimony. My favorite was the one called "A Part Of The Dark Is Moving". Every story takes place at real place in East Tennessee. This is a must have for anyone who likes old fashion ghost stories or folklore.

This book is a must-read for inspiration in the Christian life. Happiness is what we all strive for-but unfortunately rarely find. This book is an inspiration in finding truths about Life that have always been there, but we routinely overlook them. God did not intend for us to be unhappy and miserable. This book leads you into a journey of self-discovery to find True happiness that can not be destroyed by events that take place in our lives.

The author (Gregory Bearstop) provides an easy to follow path towards lasting happiness. It is a book that will appeal to anyone, no matter their spiritual development. For those who are seeking truth, he reminds us what we already know on a certain level but have forgotton-that true happiness is found through God. For those that have already acknowledged God as the path to their salvation and happiness, he relates effective ways to deepen our relationship. He identifies ways of relating to God and focuses on listening techniques. He also shows that God is present within each of us and often manifests his love for us through other people. Sometimes the answers we are looking for come directly from God, but just as often they come in ways, shapes, and forms that often catch us by surprise.

This book has something for everyone, no matter where they are in their spiritual journey. The author's passion for helping others is evident through his writing style. His caring, compassionate prose helps the reader feel that he is speaking directly to them.

I would recommend this book to anyone. A truly inspirational book that is more important in this day and age than ever before. Mr. Bearstop shares his gift with us, and opens the door to lasting fulfillment. No matter who you are or where you are, this book will help you find the happiness so many of us long for.

This is a truly wonderful book. In these grim times it's easy to forget what it really means to be happy. Mr. Bearstop gently contrasts the world's view of happiness with that of the Christian. This is a book that the reader will return to for comfort again and again.

This book is truly inspirational. Happiness is sought by everyone, but we unfortunately rarely completely find it. This book leads you to a path of self-discovery to find the Unique worth of yourself. God did not intend for us to be unhappy, but all too often we are misled to believe that God wants us to suffer. The insights into Happiness are truths that have always been out there, but we mostly overlook them or pay little attention to them. I highly recommend this book.

If it's serenity, reassurance in an uncertain world, and inspiration (without pressure) you seek ... then this is the book for you! This book affects me like a dose of Prozac. Calming and confidence building without being pushy or pressuring. When I am having rough times and am up late worrying, I always open up 'Happiness that is Guaranteed' and end up sleeping like a baby. Don't miss this one. It will change your life and be a life long resource.
