This small book does a good job covering many relevant topics about Pekes. I was pleased with the contents and would recommend the book to individuals who are considering on buying a Pekingese. The pictures alone will charm you into making the purchase.

I am buying a pekingese and this book is so helpful! I feel more knowledgeable and will be able to purchase with more confidence. I will also be able to get the grooming aids, etc. prior to the puppy coming home.

This does what it says and is a good guide for pet owners who have not had a peke before. You could do worse than sell it with each puppy, if you are a responsible breeder.

This is an excellent book for a first time Pekingese owner!! For someone who knows the breed(and I truly mean knows- I've had my boy for a year and a half and I still learned things), it might not be as helpful. It's easy to read and at times shows a little humor. It covers everything a responsible pet owner should know. It even included first aid techniques in case of emergencys, some basic training steps, grooming, etc. Definately an A+ book written by someone who knows what they're talking about.

Nothing sticks out

Yes, this is a pleasant, short, brief book about the Pekingese. However, it's not any different than any other book about the Pekingese breed. The information is very generic, and if you search around personal sites online or just visit breeder's pages, you'll find the same info. At points, I felt like the book became a generic dog care book, giving advice for any breed of dog. It isn't peke-specific enough. For example, they should've had a chart that listed how many calories of food or vitamins pekes need at different life stages and weather. Pekes may be small dogs, but they are heavier and require different nutrition than other breeds. One would expect a book titled "Pekingese" to be tailored to a Peke's needs but the info that is provided for feeding can also be found in a book for any other dog. Do you think a peke needs the same nutrition as a Dalmation? No. It's a good book for those that have never had a dog before, or don't have the slightest clue about the Pekingese. However, if you are already a peke-companion and were looking for helpful peke-specific info, this book doesn't provide info that you don't already know.

I have been working as a model for 6 years. My life is extremely pressured, I am always trying to perfect my work, my body and my children seem to never accomplish the way I would. When I saw Dr. Ciaramicoli on Good Morning America, I could not believe the story told by one of his clients. She could be my sister. I got the book last night and read it through till 2am. This book is my savior, a guide to change relentless demands I place on myself and those close to me. I never realized why I have such difficulty parenting and loving. The Chapters on Image Love and Performance Addiction and Parenting make so much sense. I wish I had read this book earlier but hopefully it is not too late for me to change the course of my life. I know I drive people close to me crazy, now at least a have a map to help me to relate better and work with less intensity.

Hope and insight for many who are driven to perform

Dr Ciaramicoli speaks with clarity and compassion and makes the 'syndrome' very understandable. Using the subjects in his practice as examples, I could easily identify with aspects of their driven nature. He makes a strong statement about why we feel compelled to maintain this compulsive lifestyle. Still, it was written not to sound like some dreaded character flaw but a general trend in our society that is creeping into the fabric of our cultural belief system. He offers us hope and insight into how we can better slow down and enjoy our lives and ourselves.

For a long time now I have been looking for a way to balance my life. With the constant demands I place on myself to have more, be more and to be perfct I thought I would burst. I have felt this way pretty much all my life, but have never been able to pinpoint the reason. I saw Dr. Ciaramicoli on Good Morning America and everything became clear. I ordered the book and really felt it put my life in perspective. I sincerely thank Dr. Ciaramicoli for helping me to finally live my life with balance.

Thias book speaks to people who rely on achievements to make them feel good and explains why they experience anxiety. It comes down to a poor sense of "self." I have read a lot of this information in other books, but I believe the author makes his points clearly and adds value on this topic.

This book is very helpful, and many chapters are exceptional, particularly Image Love and Relationships, Exceptional Mediocrity, Meaning and Joy, and Balancing Work and Life. The way each chapter is introduced, the use of specific human examples, the questions provided to enable the reader to explore the depth of his or her own problem, and the suggestions offered for conquering performance addiction are superb. The realistic tools provided at the end of the book to enable the reader to assess progress in conquering this addiction are most useful.

Excellent book! Well-written, very easy to understand. This book covers basic neurology, anatomy, and physiology, thus provides an excellent review! It also explains very well in details how drugs act on the body. Highly recommed to physical therapy students, medicine students, and the other medical discipline students.

I am currently using this textbook for a pharmacology course for a tDPT pharmacology course. This book provides a lot of in depth detail about every drug category and tries to give some insight into how it affect therapy assessments and plan of care. It works best as a reference versus a full book read in my opinion. Ciccone does a good job of really explaining the drug classes mechanism of action on the body. It gives a more in depth explanation of than just a drug reference book or what can be found online and it is tailored to things therapists care about(postural hypotension, exercise tolerance, alertness, etc). This book certainly makes a good buy for any therapists reference section but with the constant change in drugs and new findings it will be outdated easily even with the 2007 edition. I recommend some type of online update drug program in conjunction (such as Epocreates).

Is this book worth it?

I would assume that the majority of people who would buy this book are taking a class in pharmacology. I have had alot of recommended text books that were not worth even taking out of the wrapper, but this book is not one of them. The author's actually spent the time to organize and gather relatively current information and then put a hard cover on it. It's getting harder and harder to get that combination. I gave this a 5 star rating because it really will be a book you will keep and reference after the class is over.

Bravo, this is an excellent book. Very practical, simple and brilliant, with clear images. I also enjoyed reading it, but unfortunately when I started the chapter about relationship and manipulation I accidentally left the book in the waiting room of my clinic. Next day it was gone. One of the waiting patients liked this book too. I will buy another copy and definitely will recommend it to my patients.

An epiphany about listening to your spouse's "wants"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-21
Dr. Simon's book has material that is directly useful in day-to-day life, both personal as well as professional. Funnily enough, it has even helped my racquetball game! I've been working on various aspects of my game, and over time have forgotten about the fundamental value of owning the center court space! Obviously that has not prompted my review, but rather to share that this book has had a much greater impact on how I handle my relationship with my wife.

In one of the early chapters, Dr. Simon addresses the need to keep and manage our "want list", in order to better understand who we are as people. There was one segment discussing the difference between listening to each other's "wants" as a courting couple vs. as a married couple. As we date we share our hopes, dreams and aspirations, most of which can be categorized as wants. However, far too often, after couples get married and "LIFE" starts kicking in (job stress, houses, bills, children, etc.) we start having different dialogues. Rather than listenting to your partner's "wants" and hearing what's your spouse is saying, these wants can be viewed as "what I have been unable to deliver to or fulfill for my spouse." This then creates tension, and you start thinking (and saying) things like "if that's what you wanted, then you married the wrong man because I can't afford that/do that/etc." Wow, that was almost a direct quote from several conversations I've had with my wife!

I wasn't listening to her thoughts, wants and whims beyond my concrete ability to deliver them in the near term, as well as assuming that she wanted these things she was telling me MORE than what she had in her life at the moment. That night, after reading the chapter on wants, I had a warm wonderful conversation with my wife, and opened the door to hearing more about what's in her head and heart.

Dr. Simon, thank you for a new insight, a warm, sweet taste of reality, and the seed for a nice conversation with the lovely woman whom I love.

Review Date: 2003-06-02
The novel opens with a lesbian S&M scene through which the author reveals a family history informed by tragedy and adversity so bizarre that the family believes they are cursed. The family history is told by Po, the youngest of three children born to the Childs'. The children grow up believing that deceased relatives make regular visits to the family to foretell the onset of happy or sad times. Uncle Ray is determined to kill himself and the family endures multiple failed attempts on his part to achieve his goal. Having grown up in an environment where ghosts abound and insanity flourishes, the children develop coping mechanisms that allow them to survive the family but lose themselves. From drug addiction to self-mutilation to family abandonment, the Childs' children attempt to cover up, or perhaps unleash, the pain of generations of trauma.

"Po Man's Child" accomplishes many things on many levels. The novel is steeped in supernatural beliefs and familial experiences that shape the lives of the characters in self-destructive ways. The story demonstrates how one's inability to challenge and resist beliefs that do not enrich their lives will only lead to destroying it. Blackman has written a highly symbolic, multi-layered narrative that informs and entertains. The writing is superb. The story is intense and expertly imagined. This is a fabulous debut novel by an extremely skilled and daring writer. I look forward to more of her work. Highly Recommended.

In 'Po Man's Child', Blackman skillfully interweaves three crucial days in the life of the protagonist Po, with a depiction of her earlier years and the family whose 'curse' she shares. This remarkable first novel, full of memorable characters, conveys both the despair of mean lives and the hope of human empowerment.

G. D. Baum is a terrific writer. The book opens with a scene in which the main character is making love to his partner who has cancer. The emotion is intense and is hightened as each new character is introduced. One is suicidal. Another is a grandfatherly man who has seen his share of crime.

Baum does a great job of weaving facts about martial arts into the story and this is the part I didn't expect. This made it a great read for both genders. I would not have chosen a book about martial arts, but I love a book from which I can learn. This one certainly fit the bill.

First the disclaimer, I'm a 4th degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo, the same system the author (and the main character) studies.

For the martial arts scenes, they were crisp, well written and provided an interesting insight into the internal arts. They also reminded me to practice my Tai Chi more. :-)

This book isn't a murder mystery, lots of people get killed, and it is very clear who done what to who. It is a book about relationships, not nice ones either. It is more about one man's struggle to improve himself and those around him while playing with the cards life dealt him.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it for those who like an engaging read. The good guys aren't paragons of absolute virtue, but that is often how it is.

I read it in one sitting!! I think that the interweaving of East and West sets this book apart from others. The plot is complicated enough to hold one's interest and although the Grandfather is my favorite character the author manages to make all the other players believeable. It is clear that a sequel is in the wings and I will be eagerly awaiting its appearance.

PI Henry Cho needs assistance from PI Lock Tourmaline. Cho needs someone he can trust to watch his back. Cho is Susan Heung's bodyguard and friend of Lock. Susan is the daughter of "old man Heung." Heung is beginning to turn the family business over to his children. Susan runs the legitimate part of the business. Her brother Jason is taking over the illegal part, drugs. Cousin Bodacious is upset and wants a summit meeting. He insists that he and the "Old Man" meet and insists that Susan and Jason be included. Cho suspects that Susan is planning to assassinate Cousin Bodacious. Susan and Jason's presence was significant.

When Cho tells Lock "No one will have a gun." Lock decides to bring Grandfather with him. Grandfather "is the embodiment of the paradoxical truth that the greatest martial artists were so often gentle, humble men."

Lock was beat up and picked on as a child. His father insisted he learn martial arts. Grandfather taught Tae Kwon Do. "Your ignorance breeds the fear." "You'll never be afraid again of anyone, even your father. You'll respect him, but you won't fear him."

Susan has been grooming Cho to run for congress. She knew it would be beneficial to have connections in the Federal Government.

Lock's lover, Janice has terminal cancer. He loves her very much and is attempting to cope with her illness and imminent death. Her daughter looks up to Lock as a daughter looks to her father. His ex-wife's love beats her. The summit goes bad and "Old Man Heung" is murdered. Can life get any more complicated for Lock?

G.D Baum offers readers a winner in "Point and Shoot." The title refers to cops doing what cops are not supposed to do, taking care of problems in an illegal way. The plot of this book is fascinating. Baum takes readers on a roller coaster ride with twists and turns along the way. From the first page I was hooked. I didn't lay "Point and Shoot" down until the last page. When Lock describes making love to a woman with terminal cancer I found myself in tears. The tenderness with which Lock deals with his lover made me think that Baum may have suffered through such a battle. Janice is a stronger character bringing to life the plight of breast cancer patients. For me, the mystery took a back seat to this couple's relationship. The martial arts scenes were enthralling. Lock is deadly without a gun. Well-done G.D. Baum! I highly recommend "Point and Shoot" to mystery and fiction enthusiasts.

This book is about the relationship between the United States and the Sioux Nation from the signing of the 1851 Ft. Laramie treaty up to the present. The book centers around the efforts of the Wounded Knee Survivors Assoc. and their attorney Mario Gonzalez to obtain a formal apology from the U.S. government for the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre and the establishment of a National Tribal park at the massacre site. This book includes:

*Gonzalez' diary entries from 1989-1992--an excellent window to see firsthand how contemporary tribal governments work and how Native Americans on reservations interact with each other on a daily basis.

*Commentary (called chronicles)by Elizabeth Cooke-Lynn explaining events described in the diary entries including Gonzalez' efforts in stopping the payment of $100 million claims commission for the Black Hills in 1980, and his efforst in Europe from 1981 to 1984 to get the World Court to issue an advisory opinion on the illegal confiscation of the Black Hills.

*Appendices that include a complete chronology of Sioux land claims from the signing of the 1851 treaty up to the present--a must for anyone interested in Indian land claims.

*Excellent footnotes with valuable information found no where else including information about Chief Crazy Horse's family members contained in the probate records of Chief Crazy Horse's father.

This book is FASCINATING and should appeal to everyone! IT SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING IN EVERY NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES CLASS!

Review Date: 1999-12-01
What first strikes this reader is the very frank and engrossing personal narrative, as well as the description of the on-going political struggle of the Sioux in their battle for the return of the Black Hills in South Dakota. The diary entries of lawyer Mario Gonzales and the commentaries of Elizabeth Cook-Lynn gave me an opportunity to re-think important events in Sioux and American history over the past century (including Custer and the Little Big Horn, the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, and others). The authors also show very clearly how these linked histories continue to influence the actions of individuals (white or Indian) and governments today. Cook-Lynn is especially deft at evaluating the political, economic, and racial motivations of the various stakeholders, from the factions within different Sioux tribes, the governors and congressmen, federal agencies, to the white landowners. The centerpiece of the book is the fight by the Sioux for the return of the Black Hills (preserved for the tribes by treaty in 1868), as well as the related fight for a monument to the Sioux massacred by government troups at Wounded Knee. But as the story unfolds, it became a means for me to understand the treaty rights and sovereign rights of not just the Sioux but other Indian nations in this country. Gonzales relates details of the legal battles and community struggles, and shows an amazing persistence and courage in his pursuit of justice for the Sioux. I hope that other readers come away from this book with as strong a sense as I did: of our need to resolve these ethical and legal dilemmas by recognition of Indian treaty rights and sovereignty. I'm grateful to the authors for their frank discussions of the real difficulties inherent in this task, and for outlining the rewards to all of us if they succeed.

The Not So Secret Secret is Communication

A few years back I was looking for a book I could use to help guide the couples I worked with in marriage counseling. A friend and fellow counselor recommended The Power of Two. After reading it for myself I was grateful. There are always complicated issues to deal with any real relationship. How we navigate those troubled waters has everything to do with how we communicate. Susan Heitler, a seasoned couples therapist, has put together a how-to-communicate guide in a user friendly format. It starts out with the basics, Talking and Listening, emphasizing the priceless value of good everyday communication. She outlines the communication pitfalls people often trip over, how to improve and then provides scripts, what not to do and then the better way. Some people find these scripts corny and contrived. I can see that, but they are also useful for couples who really don't have a clue how to receive criticism without getting defensive, give criticism without being negative or how to ask for what they need from a reluctant spouse without whining. She also gets into the more difficult challenges of communication when emotions run hot.

The content is useful, it teaches and validates; the format accessible, easy language artfully spaced on the pages. I recommend this book for all couples, not just spouses; bothers, sisters, mothers, daughters, sons and fathers have also told me this book has enhanced their relationships.

I was excited to find a book that has everything you need to know about marital communications. Very thorough and well compiled. Kudos to the author for such an in-depth approach to being married.

I was dismayed to see reference that tough childhoods cause a neurological change in people. I felt it implied that such an upbringing would be to blame for anyone who suffers from a neurological illess. Could make for a tough sell to such an audience.

However, thanks for such a thorough read.

Thanks to Dr. Heitler

Dear Dr. Heitler: I live in New York. The purpose of this e-mail is to say thank you for all of your help during a difficult time in my life. I have spent the last two years trying to figure out what I am looking for and how to have a healthy relationship. I went through a long healing process and think I am ready to get back in to dating. I am going to re-read your book because I think it is the best book I have read in how to have a successful relationship. Thank you again for all of your help. Regards, Bruce

I married the next person I dated after I read this book!

I don't really think I got married BECAUSE of the book. But after I read the book, I finally could see that it was possible to be married, remain an individual, and still have a deep and meaningful relationship. If you think marriage takes away your independence, read this book--it empowers you.

The book is incredibly detailed yet breaks out a lot of fundamental as well as advanced biological info at the college level in an a very readable and accessible way. Obviously a solid textbook but I recommend it for Florida residents and natives for the wealth of info in this book on the incredibly biologically diverse State of Florida.

I am adopting this book for the third time as the main text for my Ecosystems of Florida class and I am very happy with it. It is amazingly cheap for the quality of the text and figures, and it is very accessible for students at all levels.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Florida. Not only it is a great text for a non-major's course, it also makes a great coffee table book!
