Don't Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment is a poignant story on several different levels. It's such a compelling memoir, you have to keep reminding yourself that it isn't fiction. The raw emotions and the bare truth of the story pull you into a drama that no child should experience. It's a testimonial to Linda Joy's strength of character that she could survive such an experience let alone re-live it again to tell her story.

Her prose is so poetic, at times you think you're reading poetry. In addition to being a fine author, Linda Joy is a therapist illuminating the spiritual growth that comes from compassion, forgiveness, perseverance, and the courage that can be born of such a tragic childhood.

The driving force behind the book is the hope that the chain of abandonment cycling through the generations can finally be broken. Don't Call Me Mother should be read by anyone who has experienced abandonment, divorce, or living with mental illness; however, the book stands on its own as an unforgettable story.

I had the privilige of hearing Ms Myers speak recently and was touched by her incredible empathy and understanding for people who have suffered abandonment and abuse in their childhood. Though the memoir genre is overpopulated by stories of Hollywood stars and the like, regaling us with their secrets, Ms Myers' account of three generations of mother-daughter abandonment and her quest to heal the rupture in her family reads more like a lyrical and sensitive novel than a true-life story. Poetic and evocative in its depiction of Ms Myers' incarnations as a child struggling to withstand the tempestous damage of mental illness; a young woman seeking the truth buried amidst family secrets; and of a strong-willed mother and grandmother fighting to reshape the future out of the past, this is a book that touches all of us, whether or not we have suffered the same. Healing and powerful in its message while never being self-indulgent, "Don't Call Me Mother" is a testament to the resiliency and courage of those who seek to make peace with themselves and discover truth through their losses.

As a women's memoir writing teacher and coach, I read memoirs to find exemplars for my classes. I recently read the excellent Don't Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment by Linda Joy Myers. Her compelling life story is written as a series of vignettes that reveal a multi-generational pattern of abandonment and eventual healing. Myers, a marriage and family therapist, writes in the voice of the first person speaking in the present tense. If you are writing, or interested in writing, your memoir, consult this book to understand the dramatic impact on the reader of this voice and tense combination. From the author's perspective, Myers says the choice "forced me to integrate the self that I was with the witness I have become." You'll also notice the importance of trains in her life, representing separations and reunions, new ventures and returning home. If you are working on your memoir, consider if there has been a thread running through your life that could be woven into your memoir. Myers, also an artist, creates vitality and vividness in the people and places she shares with us through the use of color descriptors. What passions do you have - gardening, sports, cooking, art, music - that might enhance the telling of your story?

I strongly recommend this book as a "good read" if you struggle with the mother-daughter relationship in your life. I also highly recommend this book for the insights it offers into writing your memoir.

This was not quite what I thought it was but it was enjoyable, if that is the appropriate term for a book that causes one to cry or reflect on familial relationships. I have been surprised to learn how many women end up in circumstances in which they have effectively, if not actually, been abandoned by their mothers. I gave a copy to my daughter and loaned mine to a friend who I learned had been placed for adoption because her mother didn't want more children.

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed. Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.

A common myth about Dr. Atkins that could stand some clearing up is that he advocates a strict homeopathic system of medical care and an unbalanced meat-only diet. These misconceptions can be corrected by reading the first few chapters. Atkins actually gives well-reasoned explanations of his philosophy of Complementary medicine, an approach that stresses prevention via good dietary habits, vitamin supplements and exercise, then homeopathic and vitamin remedies when there is a problem, and finally traditional medicine when all else fails (Yeah, he's a quack all right!). Without going into the details and logistics here, I was impressed with how logical and simple to apply this system is.

Where Atkins' detractors have hung up on most is the section on diet and how our last 150 years or so of history have affected it. From our pre-industrial food options though the Twentieth Century's sudden proliferation of processed flour and sugar, we can trace the steady rise of heart disease, obesity, tooth decay and Type 2 diabetes. Worse, the industries that stood to profit from the "deadly duo" (and other starchy carb-based foods that were taking the place of meats, eggs, butter and cheese as the bulk of our diets) greatly influenced the medical profession's research and findings. The resulting decline of our national health is a bitter legacy to take responsibility for, and that is just what too many of our processed food makers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and health experts would have to do once they conceded that Atkins may indeed have been right. For that reason, such an admission may be decades in coming.

Whether or not you find yourself agreeing with that area of Atkins' theory, the book presents sound arguments and encourages a lifestyle that has improved untold lives over the past 30 years. There are changes you can make that will lower your blood pressure, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, eliminate systemic yeast infections, reverse diabetes and re-energize you - all without the use of drugs. In fact, you will probably end up being able to ditch the drugs you are on now.

I believe that someday Dr. Atkins vitamin and diet principles will be the standard recommendations from the health industry. It is hard to argue with the steadily growing segment of our population that simply gets lasting results by using them, and expands slowly via word of mouth. Meanwhile, those happy few of us will continue to benefit from the work done by this incredible man and his steadfast campaigning on our behalf before a tragic head wound took his life a few months ago.
Rest in peace, Doctor.

I started reading the Thoene's books several years ago and enjoy them with my heart and mind. They bring history to life. I started out with the Zion Legacy & went on to A.D. Chronicles. I couldn't get enough so I began the Zion Covenant and only need to read the last two of the Zion Chronicles. I have a total of 22 of their books. I just can't get enough of their writing. Their books bring out so many emotions - they are all about God and His son, Jesus, and how they intervene in our lives. Their books are about hope - don't we need that in these days, too?

I love Bodie Thoene's books...all of them and have read most everything she has written and recommended them to others. Brock does the research and it is super! The insight into the Scriptures is beautiful and very informative. This book gives you a lot to think about and has gotten me to not only think about what she has written, but has had me check out the Scriptures again. I have shared her books with friends and now they too are fans. I never start a series of her books until she has quite a few of them out as I hate to wait for the next one. 8th Shepherd doesn't disappoint and the C.D. Chronicles will be rated as among her best.

Garry Jenning's "The Journeyer" has become one of my favorites. It has everything! True romance, adventure, perill and heroes. Not to mention it is an extremely erotic novel. I was given this book by a friend.....two years later...I still have it!! Mr Jennings has the ability to transport you back in time to experience first hand the travels of the Polo's. By the time you are done with this book you feel as if you "know" the characters. You hate to put it down. I read all 1000+ pages in less than a week.....the first time. Each time I go back to it , it feels as if I'm seeing an old friend.

A must for the armchair traveler.

The Journeyer is an incredible book. It ranks up there with The Good Earth, Shogun, and Tai Pan. If you're into old China, epoch adventure, sex, romance, and suspense, and an if you like the notion of following several story threads each embodying a clever cast of characters this is the book for you. I lost count of how many times I've read the book and how many times I have recounted the doings of the Fondler.

Over 300 strips from 1999: some dated, most timeless

"Three steps to completing your initiation as an Evil Genius:
1. Adopt ominous accent."
"Checkski."
"2. Never, ever smile."
"Checkski."
"3. Bring a wealthy, monopolistic multinational corporation that sells crappy operating systems to its knees."
"Am thinkink there is no way of doink number 2 and 3 at same time."
- Pitr, reading EVIL GENIUSES FOR DUMMIES

The comic strip USER FRIENDLY maintains a continuous storyline, so EVIL GENIUSES IN A NUTSHELL picks up where the first collection, USER FRIENDLY, left off. The main characters - the staff of Columbia Internet - were introduced in the first book.

Written and set during 1999, the year that THE MATRIX and STAR WARS I: THE PHANTOM MENACE were released, there are lots of then-topical references (such as the completely empty offices of Columbia Internet on May 19 and the ultimate possible evil release date for Quake III).

For instance, during one of Stef the marketing guy's dust-ups with Erwin the AI, Erwin is temporarily loaded into a Furby's toy body. (Gentle readers might remember the talking stuffed toys after a little thought.) After Stef destroys it and Erwin retaliates, Stef finds himself in big trouble with the NSA. :) At one point, Erwin ends up talking like Yoda after being stuffed into a reverse-Polish-notation calculator.

And there are plenty of fantasy elements (at least, if you're in management, you can tell yourself that's all they are). Crud the demonic entity, saying that Microsoft is passé, changes over to AOL. The techies have a holy war over which of the various flavours of Linux is The One (TM). Erwin tries to nuke a spammer, with Russia and China joining in. Pitr tries to solve some budget problems by seeking refunds for all the copies of 5 different versions of Windows Columbia Internet has acquired with their hardware. When Microsoft's anti-Linux team arrives, the coders do the logical thing: they sic the thugs onto Stef. Erwin messes with Stef's head when they get him back, almost turning him into a techie ("I'm thinking I should've taken the blue pill"), but Delilah from MS sales re-education changes him back. In between, the techs play with Half-Life, Alpha Centauri, and Rainbow Six. (When a Terminator-like engineer's brain is replaced by a Pentium III chip, our heroes only notice him because his shotgun is a cool Quake weapon.)

*No* real life techies would try to shop a colleague onto the graveyard tech support shift, would they? No sleazy marketing guy would order sleek new computer gear just to impress a good-looking female techie would he? Just fantasy elements.

Right.

Not many Y2K strips, although the techies do prepare, because while Columbia Internet is compliant they're betting that Windows isn't, and that their clients will blame them. (The next collection, THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, deals with the post-Y2K letdown.)

New characters:
- Artur the possessed engineer, who talks like Ahnold
- Matt the sea urchin, a new friend of Dust Puppy's rescued from a sushi bar

If you enjoyed User Friendly, you'll want this sequel. If you
haven't read User Friendly, then you'll want to look at that one
first, since this one follows it. Or go to userfriendly.org and
sample a few of the strips there -- but it's hard to take the
website to the bathroom with you or leave it on the coffee table
for family or friends to discover. Hence, the printed book.

This book picks up where User Friendly left off, and it's more
of the same. The quality of the strips has not dropped off; if
anything, these strips are better than the first ones. I quite
thoroughly enjoyed it. See also Root of all Evil.

Follow the guys from Columbia Internet as they work through the day to day tasks of tech support with really stupid customers, deciding which Linux distro to install, and tips on fragging the enemy. As you read you will find that there really is such a thing as a stupid question.

This book holds a little entertainment for anyone that is interested in computers. Admittedly, there is a certain level of Linux understanding to enjoy the Microsoft jokes. I would not buy this book for the technophobe in your life.

The book is dated now (who really remembers what happened on May 19th 1999?). But that is part of the fun, trying to figure out what the world events were at the time of writing.

There is something for all you computer geeks. A parody of Lord of the Rings and quite a few references to the Phantom Menace will keep you in stitches. There is even a romance that buds at the end of the book. I think it is all fake though, or at least cannot be long lived. Have you ever heard of geeks and romance going together?

I am a "haggadah hoarder"! I have bought them ALL and personally use many of them for pre-seder preparation from year to year. And yet, THIS version is the one I set my table with -- it is attractive and easy to read, the gorgeous, colorful photos and illustrations thru-out make each page a delight. The questions and BRIEF commentary generate discussion. Every section one needs for a "proper" seder is included, with transliteration of all key seder moments, but it is abridged for a contemporary, non-Orthodox group. Our seder includes folks of all Jewish backgrounds at our table, as well as non-Jewish friends, and the Gindi receives universal praise each year. The price is right, too! Use other haggadot for the occasional supplementary reading or insight during your seder, but bring Gindi to the table as your essential haggadah. (Even the price is affordable to purchase one for every guest, too!)Happy Passover!

We were very happy with this Haggadah. Everything is there (hebrew, songs, stories, the afikomen, the wine, etc.) yet it is not excessively long. We had observant Jews, non-practicing Jews and a few non-Jews at our Sedar and they all throughly enjoyed the service. The ages ranged from 9 years old to 53 years old and included 3 teenagers. Truly several generations represented.

The "Family Haggadah" appears to be illustrated and annotated for parents who want to keep their 7 - 12 year olds engaged during the seder. For that purpose, the Family Haggadah seems to be an excellent choice. Beautifully illustrated with lots of fun "side" facts. If you have teenagers or are a group of all adults, the Family Haggadah will likely come off as too childish. The content is good for various degrees of religious seders. If you are looking for a more cultural/humanistic/secular approach to celebrating Passover, this Haggadah will leave you wanting more. I take my hat (but not my kippa) off to the author for creating a kid friendly haggadah that parents could tolerate.

This Book Will Make You Think
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-01
This book has helped me to recognize bonds that I thought existed, but which really existed only in my imagination. It has also helped me to realize that I was the one who expected people to behave a certain way, based not on who they were, but on templates that I'd accepted as truth in my formative years: mothers were supposed to bake cookies and love you -- but mine didn't. Daddies were supposed to love you, and if you never saw them it was because something monumental was keeping them away -- except when they stayed away due to their own selfishness. And so on.

I could only read one chapter at a time, if that much. It caused a lot of disturbance in my heart, but ultimately it has been very helpful. It's sad to let go of those fantasies, but I wasn't able to even start healing from an abusive childhood until I could recognize the difference between what things "should have been" and what they were. It hurts, all right, but I'm better. And now I'm happier.

Be forewarned, this is a textbook, not some easy-reading self-help book. The book explains that we erect defenses in relationships because of our mother, self-hate, and fear of death. It also explains how those defenses manifest themselves and how they are damaging to meaningful living. The book also relates how duality (saying one thing when we mean another) is damaging, in both adult relationships and with our children. There is a lot of explanation and insight here, but not a lot of direction for solving the problem.

This excellent book has changed my life, helping me to become a happier person and putting me on the road to my first good relationship. As I was reading it, I would come to new chapters and say, "well this certainly doesn't apply to me" (e.g. "Idealization of the Family"), but I quickly learned that those chapters did indeed apply. I now refer to it as my Bible because I so often talk about it to my friends and encourage them to read it. The section on Theoretcial Issues is probably too academic for most readers, and I am skeptical about how much schizophrenics can really be helped by these techniques. But I think the general population would be greatly helped by the ideas in the book.

Extreme Common Sense

In this book, Dr. Weinzimmer points out many of the errors in normal business thinking by providing common sense alternative that will provide value to any company's customers. For example, he says to throw out SWOT analysis, but he provides an alternative that focuses on the customer instead of focusing on the firm. I had this professor for my undergrad capstone project and know that he truly believes in his ideas because he forces us to apply them in our senior consulting project (which uses actual companies as clients). This book allowed us to produce original ideas that will help our client grow their business. This book was even entertaining to read and, depending on the amount of analysis you want to put into it, can be a quick read.

Dr. Weinzimmer provides an excellent alternative to the common views on strategic management. I was a student in his strategic management course during my undergraduate study, and we used this book. Comparing it to other strategy classes, I can honestly say his view comes out on top. I would recommend this to any college student looking for an alternative to what is commonly included in books.

Although his examples and strategies tend to focus on large corporations, his approach to the issues and challenges of growth are applicaple to the smallest of entreprenaurs. Few books I found that don't have a lot of fluff, and give you usable ideas to implement. There are not many books I have read twice...but I am on my second time around with this one. So have I accomplished fast growth? Not yet but it feels like we're on the right track. Ric Hansen/ Radio Parties- Seattle

I'll admit, when I saw the 'PhD' after the author's name, I was afraid this would be a bone-dry and obscure piece of academic writing. But it is written with great clarity and is highly readable as well as informative. It's worth reading.

Fundamental Business Strategy

Unquestionably, fundamentals are the key to sustained business success. In today's dynamic and scattershot corporate environment, buzzwords and instant "must-do" paradigms abound. In "Fast Growth", Dr. Weinzimmer has blown through the confusing clouds of "must do's" spun by hypothetical consultants to deliver a product of strategy fundaments focused on additive value creation. Dr. Weinzimmer doesn't stop there, but continues on past strategic identification through all important steps of its implementation. A beautiful combination of the "WHAT" and the "HOW". Surely a gift for every businessperson - from college students through CEOs.

The book "Fine Line"is a well written and enlightening book that I recommend all teenagers and adults to read. The book, based on the relationship of Maggie Garrity and her offensive boyfriend Tom, gives readers an insight about the emotional strain an abusive relationship causes. Not only does it have a physical affect, but it also effects a persons mental state, grades, and relationships with other people. The book is VERY realistic and beleivable, and shows the nasty side of dating that most books do not cover. Its a huge change from all the mushy love novels that have no realistic bases; a change that you really enjoy! Its a book you cant put down until you are done.I read it in one night!

A Fine Line by Constance Casserly was one of the most intriguing books that I have ever read. It was one of those books that once you pick it up you cant put it down. The story is about a teenage girl named Maggie Garrity. Maggie's father died from a drunk driver when she was a junior in highschool. Maggie and her brother David had to deal with this tragedy with very little help from their mother whom they called "the ice queen". She has many things to worry about in her young adult life but her biggest problem is her abusive boyfriend Tom. Tom begins to hurt her physically and also follows her around everywhere. Every time he bruises her he tries to buy her forgiveness and her love. He gets angry if she does not spend each and every minute with him. She doesn't know what to do because she thinks she loves him, and she doesn't want to hurt him since he has had a hard life also. Maggie's grades dropped and she lost touch with alot of her friends. A boy named Tony who was like a brother to her helped her get through this struggle. Maggie never thought that Tom would go so far, but he did. This was also a very good lesson that every girl should learn from. The metaphors used in this book were remarkable and very well thought out.

A Fine Line by Constance Casserly is an outstanding book that appeals not solely to the youth, but adult readers as well. It portrays a relationship between teenagers that involves possessiveness and abusive behavior. Many people experience and go through an abusive relationship, and don't do anything about it. This book is a perfect example of how to cope with a situation like this. For example, the main character, Maggie accepts the behavior of her abusive boyfriend, but later realizes that he was exploiting her. Soon enough she gained confidence to stand up for herself. I really liked how this book covered a real life scenario that could happen to anyone. As I began reading the first page, it caught my attention right away till the end, with its touching dialogue about the lives of normal teenagers. Perhaps, what aroused my interest the most, was how everyone and everything connected at the end, by a fine line between two extremes, love and hate. Overall, A Fine Line is one of the best books I've ever read and is definitely worth reading!

For yourself...and others

Initially picked this one up for my personal use. Was looking for ways to detour myself away from the stressful, negative routines I seemed to be following more and more frequently these days. Then, I brought it into my tobacco cessation program- and it really grabbed the attention of the participants.(I would use one of the exercises as a 'meditation' to end each session). Members soon began to recommend it to friends and relatives. Next, I brought it into another program for patients who have chronic conditions and who are trying to cope with the stress of the diagnosis, and overcome that crippling inner, negative, sabotaging voice.
What a treat this entire series of books is!
I absolutely recommend these to anyone wanting to jumpstart their efforts to de-stress, make major changes in their lives...or even, just get that elusive good night's sleep.

I picked up this book thinking, "Ahhh, a small, fluffy, 'try this or try that' collection of tips in a book form. How.... splendid." I am always glad when I find out how wrong I was about a really valuable resource such as this one!

The book is broken into sections - an introduction which explains the premise of the book, the foundation - incredibly valuable section, and then four sections filled with exercises to try. The exercise sections include Leaving Work at Work, Enriching Your Home Life, Reconnecting with Yourself and Others, and Preparing for a Good Night's Rest.

The Foundation includes an explanation (and practice) of the basic Mindful breathing and Mindful listening techniques. This section alone is worth the investment of the book. You could read that over and over (and apply it, over and over) and change your life significantly.

The practices are icing on the cake, a wide menu of ideas to try out and see what works the best for you.

Highly recommended.

What a great resource to have on the bedside table - or keep it in your car and carve out 5 minutes before shifting from work to home.

This book has a thorough introduction for those new to the practice of mindfulness. It is full of brief meditations, visualizations and exercises to help you leave work at work, enrich your home life, reconnect with self and others and preparing for a good night's rest. As a performance coach, I work with many elite competitors and business people who have trouble winding down at night or getting a good night's sleep. There are some gems in this book to help work through these challenges.

I personally found that after using the book for a short while, just seeing the book was enough to create a mental shift back to being truly present at home in the evening and not letting my mind get pulled back to work when I wanted to be giving my family my full attention. I love my family and I love my work. One of the keys to balancing this equation is being fully present wherever I am at the moment.

Highly recommended for all. Special recommendation as tool for working mothers who are under such high demands to switch from super woman at work to super mom upon walking in the front door at night.

Give yourself the gift of this book and 5 minutes each evening to learn how to better unwind and create more for yourself so you can take better care of those you love. You really can create big changes in a short amount of time. Who does not have or is not worth this type of 5 minute daily investment? If you really don't think so and won't do it for yourself, then do it for your family.
