The introduction is by Orhan Pamuk. Faulkner said an artist is a creature driven by demons. Graham Greene did not believe that any books he had read as an adult influenced him as a writer. James Thurber got his habits of memory, (nearly perfect recollection), from his mother. Thurber believed that Harold Ross had had a bloodhound instinct as an editor.
American writers felt their creativity and inventiveness would end in their fifties. Faulkner felt a writer's responsibility was to do his art. The writer should be ruthless. A writer always has to compromise when writing for the movies Faulkner believed.
Robert Lowell felt that teaching meant a lot to him as a human being. A person can't write poetry all the time. Writing comes from a deep impulse, deep inspiration. It isn't a craft. While he was writing LIFE STUDIES Lowell figured out it was a regular beat that he disliked. Lowell thought of Frost and Eliot as New England poets. In both Chekhov and Frost the art was found in the well-chosen plots.
To Eudora Welty, Jane Austen was a kindred spirit. She felt even closer to Chekhov for reason of his appreciation of the individual. She lost sleep over reading TO THE LIGHTHOUSE. Katherine Anne Porter was wonderfully generous to her in the beginning.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez believes that journalism and fiction writing are matters of cross-fertilization. He never gets involved with a book unless someone recommends it. Philip Larkin refused almost all invitations to be a bigwig. He claimed that in writing a poem he constructed a verbal device. Larkin said he dealt with the passage of time by making every day the same. When young he exchanged unpublished poems with Kingsley Amis.
James Baldwin did not so much choose France as carry out the need to leave America. The painter Beauford Delaney taught Baldwin how to see. Baldwin believed that he had to go through a time of isolation. He wrote four novels before he published one.
William Gaddis had a reputation as a recluse. He thought he learned economy from Evelyn Waugh and that this is apparent in his novel, JR. Alice Munro lives in Clinton, Ontario. Her family lived in a collapsing enterprise, a fox and mink farm. Alice Munro and her second husband stayed in Ontario to be near older family members. When they passed on, Munro and her husband remained.
Information about the contributors appears at the end of this excellent book.

The Paris Review Interviews, book II is excellent.
The Harold Bloom interview alone is worth having this book.
Faulkner, Thurber, Welty, Lowell, García Márquez are all interesting reads, however, Bloom entertains.
[fwiw - Blooms comments on humour, in the PR Humor issue:

Book II is easily as good as, if not better than Book I.

I found this to be the best organized and most clearly written of the case based reviews for the oral boards. The cases discussed in this book were very similar to vignettes presented in the oral examination and this review covered almost all of the questions I was asked. I'm glad that I went through this book twice before boards and recommend it highly.

This is an excellent case-based review of pediatric neurology. Dr. Rosser presents a wide variety of cases. These are followed by an elegant and consistent approach to the analysis of each case. The analysis of the cases includes; localization, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and appropriate work-up.
This book could be even better if it included a DVD with videos and illustrations of the various conditions described.

I am a repeat customer of Peoples Choice Guide Cancun and the new 2008 edition is fantastic. There are many helpful improvments, such as you can now search by Food Category and the Proximity Guide where you can quickly locate Restaurants and Clubs close to your Hotel. The locations for the hotels, restaurants and clubs are pinpointed to 1/10 of a km, which makes it far easier than saying "between km 9 and km 10. When you are driving, riding or whatever in a foreign land you don't want to be in busy traffic looking for a km to find a place.
I live in Cancun and even as a resident this book is most helpful. Locals have to eat out too. When I travel I always try to find a Travel Guide before I plan my trip. It would be great if this guide was available for other travel hotspots.
I imagine it is hard to keep any travel guide current, with name changes, business closings, new places, etc. but the author states that he makes frequent trips to Cancun to allow for the most up to date information at the time the guide goes to print. This travel guide is a good as it gets for Cancun.

Well, I've just read the new and improved People's Choice Guide and I have to say that it is a must have for travelers or tourists to Cancun. The guide covers almost everything Cancun from hidden gems to the glitz of the club set.
Unlike other prominent guides, the PCG covers almost every hotel, most restaurants and other points of interests. When I first started going to Cancun some twenty plus years ago, nothing would tick me off more than buying one of the so called major guides and not seeing a resort I was thinking about booking, in it. With the PCG that's not likely to happen and best of all many of the reviews are based on people whom have actually stayed at the Hotels or eaten at the Restaurants, and of course, the author who has managed to track down and keep regular tabs on the Cancun scene. The book is loaded with travel tips, recommendations, and up to date, concise addresses and phone numbers of everything the typical visitor to Cancun may need.
In my opinion, this is the most worthwhile guide to Cancun published and is more extensive than any other guide on the market.

This is definitely the most accurate book out there, as the others don't like Frommers and Fodors don't list every restaurant or hotel. This fantastic book doesn't only list restaurants and hotels, but also clubs, bars, great information about transportation, and many other great things. It is definitely worth a lot more than the price you're getting it for. It's a must have book! I highly recommend this book for both any first timers and even the experienced Cancun traveler.

Physical Diagnosis Secrets is an excellent book that really complements many Internal Medicine textbooks. Many of those books do not really cover diagnosis in a user friendly way but Dr. Mangione's book offers an amazing amount of information concisely. He even offers the historical background for many of the eponymous terms like Korotkoff sounds.

One of the best examples of how wonderful is the secret series for medical studend and for the experienced physician.
I especially appreciated how the book tries to eliminate traditional but useless examination maneuvers and tries to clarify sensitivity and specificity of the usefull ones.
You will indeed discover dozens of usefull examination hints and secrets you absolutely don't know (unless you are Mangione).
It is also written in a pleasant and amusing way.
I will never sell mine.

I used these notes in PLACE of taking physical geology. I needed a final science class to graduate, and the only one available was Historical Geology, which had the prerequisite of physical geology. These Cliff's Notes are so thorough and easy to understand that I felt well prepared for the class, despite the fact that I had no experience in Geology whatsoever. I am not very good in science of any kind, and these notes were easy for even me to use:) I felt comfortable enough with the material presented in the notes to apply it in an entirely different class. I'm sure these would fantastic review notes for students in physical geology!

Anyone studying physiology has gone through the frustration of learning some complex pathway, but never understanding its significance. Physiology Secrets steps up that understanding by posing questions about many of the big points that are often missed. The question and answer format is wonderful for sparking thought on each subject, and the concise yet detailed answers give students what they need to assess their level of understanding. It's too dense a book to read all at once, but is excellent to use while studying a particular organ system or mechanism.

With the help of this book, I went from failing physiology to "honoring" every physiology test since. I can't stress enough how much Physiology Secrets helped out. It's like having your own personal tutor asking you key questions and then explaining the answers completely and clearly. If I were a professor of Physiology, I would make this required reading. Too bad, this book is now out of print. Try to get your copy while you can.

I would recomend this book to any medical students that want to master physiological medicine without wasting time or missing the relevance of the material to clinical practice.
Excelent, as quick as a review book, but as detailed as a textbook.

Printed in June, 1976, Pigeons From Hell is in excellent condition. I intend to continue to preserve it. Actually, the story Pigeons From Hell is but one story amidst a set of Robert E. Howard short stories. My interest was in tracking down the original novel which inspired what most critics seem to maintain as the greatest installment among the 67 Thriller TV show (1960-62) episodes. The purchase was economical, of the highest quality and punctual.

I've been hunting for this book sine it was released in 1988, and I was recently lucky enough to acquire a signed edition of the hardcover. All I can say is that it was worth both the wait and the search.
Pigeons From Hell is adapted from the classic Robert E. Howard short story by artist Scott Hampton. The story is a pretty straightforward southern-gothic ghost tale, with a little gore thrown in for good measure. Howard's prose is some of his best, and Hampton's art is breathtaking. His dark, moody paintings evoke a sense of isolation and terror that had me totally drawn into the story. I couldn't stop reading. The book also contains a foreward by noted horror author Ramsey Campbell. Highly recommended for horror fans!

What I enjoyed most about this book is the realness and the concern I had for the characters after I finished reading the book. The events are true and could happen, it's real life, with real situtaions. Rozelle puts his words and thoughts together as if they are hooked by links of a chain.

The main character of this book is Sam, a man who for years has taken the easy way out, who always goes the path of least resistance. He is a chemical engineer who lives in Ohio and works at the plant where his father was an hourly worker for 40 years. His home is neat and tidy, just like his life, and he makes sure he doesn't clutter it up with too many emotional attachments or responsibilities. Suddenly his well-ordered world is turned upside down when his job his threatened, his father exhibits strange symptoms, and his son descends on him with a whole horde of problems. Sam learns a lot about himself and his relationships with his family as he bemusedly watches his world fall apart, bit by bit. Rozelle carefully crafts his characters and describes them in a way which bring them vividly to life. He infuses his book with a gentle humor which keeps everything in perspective. This is a little gem of a book which I heartily recommend.

This covers a set of plans from birth to construction and even gives advice to prevent costly construction changes.

This is a perfect book for new hires and out of college engineers. It explains the relationship between contract documents and how to use them. It is a perfect tool for training new hires in highway engineering. It is about time someone put their experience to use. Must have few copies in your company file room.
