Especially good on the history of women

Review Date: 2008-05-20
This book describes many impacts of environment destruction in many countries like Egypt, India, China and Arabia. But the best thing is its explanation of how this has affected women. The parts on the ancient Middle East offer important insights for understanding what happened to the women's roles in history.

The history of a growing circle of desertification

Review Date: 2008-02-19
According to Griffith, we have been slowly denuding the land and turning it into desert for several thousand years. The places where civilization began in the Middle East were degraded first, and a circle of largely man-made desertification has spread outward ever since. As we've depleted nature, people in the affected areas often moved away in waves of migration toward greener areas. And where people degraded their environment, there have been big impacts on their culture and way of life. Griffith describes how environmental destruction has affected things like politics, religion, or economics. It's a very colorful, expansive book, and makes you realize how old a lot of our modern problems are. It also makes solving these problems seem quite possible, since many groups of people are having some good success. I found it a dense book that's packed with information on many countries in many periods of history. It took me a long time to read, but was well worth it.

More story than science, but a big, important story

This book tries to explore what happened in the past when people have turned their land into a desert. How has that affected society, politics, women, religion, etc? To answer, Griffith gives many stories from Africa, the Middle East, India, China, or Europe. One thing he looks at closely is the fate of women in areas where the land became unproductive. And in this he gives one of the most convincing explanations of of why inequality developed between men and women in certain parts of the world. To balance this Griffith tells inspiring stories of how local people have struggled to heal their environment and recover the benefits of a healthy countryside.

A very useful, positive and meaningful book

This book covers over 10,000 years of social, economic and environmental changes. It shows how our destruction of nature has changed society over time. The stories it tells are powerful and well written. I think it's a great book for anybody who really likes history and wants a peaceful and healthy environment in the future.

Fascinating combination of ecology, sociology and history

I admit that when I first came across this book I wasn't quite sure about the significance of the subject matter, or, indeed, if Id'be interested. It was my pleasure to discover, however, an entirely new approach to explain social and espcieally environmnetal degradation. The author interestingly shows how women are the first to suffer from environmental degradation. He uses the examples of lands facing - or that have faced - important desertification processes to show how a liberal society where men and women share more or less equal status can shift to favor the dominance of males. Students of ancient Egypt will be very interested to know there is a chapter on how desertification affected socio-cultural processes (and stagnation) in Egypt. There are chapters on China, North Africa and Europe some also touch on the effects that desertification has on racism and the strengthening of racial identities - namely aryan. It may all look imprpbable in thsi brief description that does little justice to the volume; however, it is surprising to find that there is a logical and sensical approach that allows for a very interesting, timely and satisfying read.

Cherri's book is well organized and provides all the basics needed to start researching your ancestors online. I spent a couple of hours with her book and my computer and was quite happy with the positive results I received in such a short amount of time. I was able to successfully research my great-grandmother's ancestors all the way back to the 1600's! It's a great book, easy to use and full of helpful tips.

Genealogy Basics Online: A Step-By-Step Guide To Searching And Finding Your Ancestors On The Internet is a superb introduction for the novice genealogist on using the Internet as a tool in their genealogical research. Cherri Flinn draws upon her considerable experience and expertise to review genealogical websites and offer practical, time-saving tips for searching them. There is even a virtual tour of courthouses and genealogy libraries around the country. Beginners are shown how they can even take genealogy lessons over the Internet! Genealogy Basics Online is an essential, core, "how to" reference title for personal and professional genealogy reference collections and training course reading lists.

I have always been interested in knowing where my ancestors came from. Before she died, my best source for family information was my grandmother. I bought Cherri Flinn's book and was able to trace my family back to 1589 in about 20 minutes! Her book has so many neat sources of information. I would highly recommend this as a reference book for anyone interested in genealogy research.

When I opened Cherri Flinn's book Genealogy Basics Online, I expected to find a well written, "how-to" book for the beginner or intermediate family historian. What I found instead, was a marvelous written book that should prove helpful to any family historian from beginner to seasoned veteran.

By her own admission, what sets this book apart is its simplicity. Genealogy Basics Online does gently guide the reader through the Internet and provides all the tools necessary for helping anyone succeed in finding family history information on the Internet.

I have been doing family history for twenty years and have used the Internet for the better part of the last ten years, yet I found something I could use the very first time I opened the book.

Cherri suggests "Keep this book by your computerand and refer to it often." How true. What she could have said was, "This may be the only "how-to" book you will ever need while working on Genealogy Online.

A wonderful book.

There's a lot of confusion about what bisexuality is. This book gives a great in-depth look about what people (bi and not) think about bisexuality. It's great for folks of any sexuality who want to learn more.

I found myself nodding vigorously in agreement with some, feeling like there were other people out there that feel as I do. I also disagreed with some folks. This book is an unbiased look at voices all over the world -- plenty of people, poor to rich, different cultures and ethnicities.

This book is more than "something for everyone". It's "a LOT for everyone."

This book has a huge variety of authors from around the world. I have never seen such an international anthology. It was really interesting to see what was going through the minds of people from such different places and cultures.

This is a must-read for people who are looking for multiple perspectives on what it means to be bi. The approach of using many voices is extremely powerful and shows that not everyone agrees and that there is a huge variety of self-expression.

Amazing anthology

Review Date: 2005-06-08
This book is amazing! It is certainly the most international "international anthology" I've ever read. Rather than interpreting other people's experiences, the editors created a well-designed and organized anthology of a wide range of people describing their lives and experiences in their own words. There are 184 essays, from 32 different countries, written by teenagers, grandparents and everyone in between. In essays and in poems, authors talk about coming out, tell their life stories, discuss bi community, relationships, politics, and desire. Each contribution is accompanied by a short author bio, and most have photos. This book literally puts a face on bisexual identity. I recommend it to people of all sexual orientations -- to those who identify as bisexual, and to those who don't. A rich and rewarding reading experience and a great resource.

Fantastic book!

Review Date: 2005-05-22
This astounding collection of essays, comments, information and more by and about bisexual people from around the world literally runs the gamut of A to Z -- Argentina to Zimbabwe -- with writings from countries you'd least expect, incredible insights from diverse walks of life, and thoughts so vast and varied that even the most casual reader will come away with a profoundly expanded and enriched appreciation of the vastness of the human spirit. The book is an eye-opener for both bi people and others in that it shows how bi people perceive life and the world around them from so many different points of view, even from each other, making for both a thrilling intellectual and visceral experience. The struggles, joys, angst and ecstasy expressed in the multitude of articles is riveting, and the comprehensiveness yet breadth of views from so many lands is simply mind-boggling and jaw-dropping. Bravo and congratulations to the editors and their contributors for this seminal book. [Full disclosure: I'm one of those pictured on the cover (to my utter surprise)and am quoted very briefly in one section of the book, but had nothing whatsoever to do with the astounding assemblage of voices collected nor the production of this remarkable landmark tome.]

Very good book! I think Bonnie did an excellent job with this one. I love it when the girls go to the Bar None because it's a completely different story each and every time. This is my favorite one that takes place at the Bar None. It's a little disapointing when Steve ruins Lisa and John's moment--but it made me laugh for about 5 minutes--I thought it was great!

I couldn't put Girlwood down. I am sharing it with my daughter who is almost thirteen. Because Girlwood touches on many issues that mothers and daughters face such as the push and pull of letting go and coming back together, mistakes, peer pressure, love, insecurity, accomlishment, finding oneself, coming of age..., it is the perfect book to read together to open the many conversations that begin during this volatile and beautiful time of our lives. It is real, and it is fanciful. It is empowering and it is beautiful!

I came across this endorsement of Girlwood by Jane Goodall. I've been an admirer of Goodall's environmental work for many years. After reading the quote below, I had to buy a copy of Girlwood. It's an enchanting and magical book that teaches reverence of our sacred earth, as well as empowerment of the individual. I'll be giving my copy to my 13-year-old niece, who I'm sure will love it.

"This is exactly the kind of book I would have loved as a teenager. It emphasizes the healing power of animals and nature which has helped so many young people cope with their problems all over the world. It will help young readers to understand that it is okay to be different. And that every individual can play a role in making this a better world."

One night, Polly is awakened from a sound sleep to find her older sister, Bree, kissing her. As Bree's blood red aura trails behind her like the tattered wings of a ruined fairy, she tells Polly that she's leaving for the woods, so that she can try to be alright again. Half asleep, and not sure if she's really seeing her emaciated, drugged out sister or an actual fairy, Polly lets her go, with no argument over how much Bree has destroyed since she started using drugs.

No one believes her when she tells them Bree has run to the woods, so it's up to Polly to provide everything her sister will need. Winter is almost there, and a developer is coming soon to trade out the trees for a housing development. Following the guidance of her grandmother, Baba, Polly knows that she could rely on herself to survive alone in the forest, and, with her help, so can Bree.

Luckily, Polly finds that she doesn't have to be alone. Others may not be able to see the colorful bands of light around each other that display exactly who they are inside, but they will believe her. Under the protection of the hidden grove that Baba has shown her, Polly and her friends will learn that, with a little magic and a little faith, anything is possible.

Beautifully written and with vibrant imagery, this book will strike a chord with anyone who has found magic and solace in their own secluded spot of wilderness. The explanations that head each chapter of the different wildflowers and their medicinal uses are also fascinating, as is the descriptions of various auras and what they mean. The back cover states that the author wrote this as a gift for her daughter, and she will be writing one for her son next. I'll be looking forward to reading that.

In Giving Notice: Why the Best and the Brightest Leave the Workplace and HOW YOU CAN HELP THEM STAY, Dr. Kapor Klein provides insights into organizational dynamics based on both years of experience and rigorous research in the field. While the stories told and examples discussed in the book take place within the corporate setting, many of issues are present in parallel forms in other professional sectors and organizational settings as well. The book is engaging and bold. The composite portraits are very real and enable the reader to connect with the impact of bias and discrimination in very personal ways. The book targets the many forms in which discriminatory behavior and hidden obstacles are often built into our everyday practices. I also appreciated the useful steps and well-crafted new framework for inclusionary workplaces. This book is not just for HR professionals or diversity consultants. I would recommend this book for anyone who manages workplaces and/or leads organizations with a commitment to level the playing field so all have the opportunity to realize their fullest capacities.

Much of the research comes from The Level Playing Field Institute which has been a great resource for information and solutions re diversity and inclusion issues (in the workplace and in education) for many years.

Review Date: 1999-09-22
This is truly a fascinating study about globalization. As told by Marquardt "two years ago, a large consulting firm that helps companies go global gave me a list of the ten most common questions its clients had about globalization :

1. How do you create a global culture?

2. What are the key components of globalization?

3. How do you create a global mind-set?

4. What kinds of skills should we look for in global managers?

5. Why do some people fail when going overseas?

6. How do we establish a global training program?

7. What experiences should we give our future leaders?

8. Should everyone in the organization become globalized?

9. Is there an order or process in which a company should go global?

10. Where can we go for help as we work toward globalization?

This list inspired me to write this book, for I realized that these questions had no easy answers and that only a handful of companies had resolved even of these issues."

In this context, after defining six components of his "GlobalSuccess" model, Marquardt explores and illustrates these six components, namely corporate culture, human resources, strategies, operations, structure and learning with best practices of more than forty successful global companies, such as : GE, Whirlpool, Colgate-Palmolive, Shell, Coca-Cola, Xerox, FedEx and HP.

I highly recommend this study. As proclaimed by Jack Welch " companies either globalize or they die."
