Mr. VanGundy has written a book which is very helpful if you are looking for a book which is brief, precise and before you start to use any of the systems it is very accessable to look for the right kind of system in any given situation. I simply love the "professor" approach, as the creativeness is at the end all up to you!

Teams who have to create on-demand inevitably find themselves in need of new techniques for getting their mental juices flowing. As the pressure builds, efforts to be "creative" often result in long, unprofitable sessions of mutual angst and long lists of second-rate, derivative ideas. Brain Boosters for Business Advantage: Ticklers, Grab Bags, Blue Skies, and Other Bionic Ideas is creativity guru Arthur VanGundy's playful collection of genuinely fun exercises for massaging the mind. Each of the 101 activities is clearly described and illustrated, with a facilitator's insight into group creative process, and a scholar's devotion to accrediting original sources. Exercises are for both individual and group mindbending, but most are extremely suitable for team brainstorming. VanGundy isn't afraid to let us know which activities are his favorites. Among his favorites, one of mine is called "Balloon, Balloon, Balloon." It has just the right amount of zaniness and physical activity to loosen up mind and body. First, people are asked to write "silly, nonsensical phrases" on slips of paper. Some examples: "worm lips on parade, "rhubarb ink javelins," "rotating cat lemons," and "vibrating elephants in your ear." Next, the slips of paper are rolled up and put into balloons of different colors. Participants tap the balloons around the room for a few minutes, collect one balloon of each color, pop the balloons and use the combined nonsense to create new ideas. For example: "Pen holders built into a chair's arms (from "arms" and "rhubarb ink javelins.") and "A built-in stereo radio in the top of the seat back (from "back" and "vibrating elephants in your ear")." VanGundy is careful to guide the reader through the collection, recommending his favorites, indicating which of his Boosters would be best for which purpose: strategic problems, product and process problems, advertising/marketing problems, and people/human resource problems. He introduces the collection with some hard-earned wisdom about the nature of creativity and group under pressure. His chapter on Creativity Principles is comprehensive, succinct, and worth committing to memory. His one basic rule: "defer all judgment when generating ideas."

I'm the author of "Thinkertoys (A Handbook of Business Creativity)," ThinkPak (A Brainstorming Card Deck," and "Cracking Creativity (The Secrets of Creative Genius)," and, as such, I, generally read most everything that hits the market. Without hestitation, Andy Van Gundy's book ranks as one of the best. It's an excellent collection of techniques. Perhaps, one of the best on the market.

This is destined to become one of the classic management texts. I found the authors treatement of the subject matter to be insightful and well thought out. This is a must for any person of color who is wondering why it's taking them so long to move into the executive level. As a trainer I will be using this as one of my texts, and I plan on sending a number of copies to my friends.

Few books have the ability to relate the importance of the information contained within to both professional and layman alike. That is, however, exactly what this book accomplishes. It shows you the how the achievements of minorities trying to attain status at the corporate level are linked to career decisions and mentoring relationships. This is accomplished by examining the characteristics of several minority executives at different companies who have managed to break through the glass ceiling. It also teaches several approaches for acheiving racial diversity throughout a company. It examines three large corporations who have accomplished this feat, by tracing their diversity efforts throughout the past few decades. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the processes by which businesses accomplish diversification throughout all levels of the company.

I just finished reading Breaking Through and learned quite a bit. Recommend it to you. I wish the subject of leadership, and how to properly use it to get results on the job, was addressed more. I recommend you also get a copy of another book that addresses this issue and is very applicable to the subject of minorities as leaders: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills." It's at Amazon too.

Breaking Through is a multifaceted book that speaks to a spectrum of audiences: the business leader committed to creating a diverse workplace; the human resource professional charged with designing and implementing diversity initiatives; the minority professional aspiring to break through.

This book sheds light on the complex career dynamics presented to minority professionals in corporate America. As an aspiring minority professional, I took away valuable strategies, as well as pitfalls, for achieving my career goals.

The book is a balance of compelling empirical evidence and real-life examples. The depth of analysis makes for an engaging and enlightening reading experience.

Breaking Through will serve as a personal professional reference guide and I am sure that it will become an invaluable resource throughout my career.

A well-orchestrated women's ministry is like a beautiful dance, bringing grace and creativity to the Body of Christ. In Building an Effective Women's Ministry, gifted author Sharon Jaynes not only teaches the basic dance steps, but all the intricate footwork that prepares women to have Scripturally "beautiful feet" in order to share Christ's Gospel of peace. In chapters like "Defining Your Purpose," "Servant Leadership," "Utilizing God-Given Abilities," "Encouraging the Team," "Lifestyle Evangelism," and "Dividing and Multiplying," Jaynes encourages women to glide across the dance floor of life, following their partner Jesus' lead. And with her trademark practical, powerful, and persuasive writing, Sharon Jaynes continues to lead the way in helping women to draw strength from Christ and, in turn, strengthen others in Him. I highly recommend this thoroughly comprehensive guide to women's ministries. Your women, your church, and your community need the potent principles outlined in this wonderful book. It will masterfully lead them in Christ's dance of joy!

Although Building an Effective Women's Ministry is 363 pages long, I devoured it, cover-to-cover, in one sitting. The writing style was as comfortable as the content was practical. As I read, my highlighter pen flew along, tracing the many "a-ha" moments inspired along the way. The acronyms, ministry models, suggested timelines and sections on ministry personalities were especially insightful. The quotes, stories and analogies made this weighty subject both intriguing and fun. A terrific resource!

I purchased this book a couple months after becoming part of a team of women who are developing a women's ministry at our church. The first few chapters alone would have saved us a ton of work, had I read this book earlier. Not to despair, however, this book is packed full of practical advice and encouragement, touching on every conceivable aspect of developing a women's ministry from the ground up. The author's style is friendly and easy to read, yet the book is organized in such a manner that it can be easily accessed as an reference. We purchased books for every member of our women's ministry team and all have found it to be excellent. Highly recommend.

Growing With Life Changing Experiences!

Review Date: 2006-10-11
This book describes the many facets of supervisory bullying behavior in the workplace. Mueller cautions often disbelieving employee victims that bullying bosses consciously calculate, select, and plan attacks on them. When attacks occur, targeted employees are shocked, confused, humiliated, and naturally seek to respond emotionally (e.g., fight or flight). Mueller asks that potential victions stop, step back and self-consciously maintain their emotions sufficiently to pursue more rational ends by using indirect tactics and activities that can generate coworker allies, support, resources, witnesses, and documentation advantageous to them. Employees are urged to stay focused on politically acceptable and legal objectives when interacting with and around workplace bullies.

The author offers an ideal model of employee survival and a guide for becoming a proactive, competent, resilient, life-changing Workplace Warrior. Mueller uses case examples to support the assertion that regular use of the guide can strengthen employees psychologically, strengthen their anti-bullying behavior, and limit the net demoralizing effects of scape-goating behavior and victimization in the workplace. The author will suggest key roles for coworkers, managers, therapists, counselors, and, of course, lawyers in the process of helping employee recovery, self-transformation, behavioral decision-making, and, ultimately, life changes.

I highly recommend this book to any one suffering from bullying behavior and to any responsible person who seeks to help empower workers in the attainment of safer, healthier, and more creative workplace settings.

A "user-friendly" guide in dealing with the difficulties involved in poor employee-to-boss relationships

Review Date: 2006-06-09
Bullying Bosses: A Survivor's Guide (How To Transcend The Illusion Of The Interpersonal) by Robert Mueller is a remarkable introduction to the complex world of counter-balancing the relationship between oppressed employees and their oppressive bosses. Logically analyzing the psychology of the belligerent and hostile superiors, Bullying Bosses offers readers a means for analyzing and responding to an employer's bullying behavior. Robert Mueller covers such issues as who challenges employees, support in the workplace, building a case against the boss that management can respect, collecting potent data, identifying patterns, crafting a simple strategic plan, grow beyond workplace turmoil into a clarity, strength and grace. Bullying Bosses is very strongly recommended for all readers searching for a "user-friendly" guide in dealing with the difficulties involved in poor employee-to-boss relationships.

Stare-down the Bully

Review Date: 2006-04-11
It is rare that a book of reference and self-help should read like an edge-of-the-seat John Grisham thriller. But this significant contribution to the study of bullying in the workplace often does. Robert Mueller, in his own words, is a "former attorney who represented a couple thousand employees suffering adverse employer actions, many involving bullying." He sure introduces the drama of the courtroom and the rudiments of the adversarial system into the 300 pages of his survivor's guide.

The author calls on managers to become aware of the dynamics that turn many workplaces into simmering stealth infernos. Employees should protect employers from bullies. Mueller leverages court cases and case histories into a cogent and methodological analysis of bullying tactics and strategies. Parallelly, he weaves a tapestry of legal, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions as he analyses the victim's mentality and reactions. Strewn among the pages of this rich presentation are highlighted tips and quotes.

Mueller's message is simple: targets of bullying have to face down their tormentors. They have to become "workplace warriors" with "shields and swords". Easier said than done - but, still, can be done, argues the author. The target has to discover and groom potential supporters, build a case against the bullying boss, collect potent data and identify patterns of misbehavior, craft a plan, and implement it. It's all about empowerment by regaining control over situations that frequently and falsely look hopeless. The author takes the victim by the hand and convincingly shows him or her how to do it.

I recommend the book to anyone who has ever been involved in on-the-job harassment, stalking, and bullying because it is both deep and practical, accurate but never arcane, eye opening and thought provoking and challenging - but never loses its empathy and compassion for the victims of this widespread and under-reported phenomenon. A gem. Sam Vaknin, author of 'Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited'

A Must Read for Targets

Review Date: 2006-08-03
This book is a must read for anyone who has ever worked, has a job now or is thinking of entering the workplace. Knowledge is power and this book provides just that. `Bullying Bosses, A Survivor's Guide' is actually two books in one: Part I, provides an overview of Workplace Bullying and its components. Part II is a manual to aid Targets to become Workplace Warriors.

Part I provides an excellent summary of international knowledge on Workplace Bullying and additional information gleaned from Robert's practice working with Targets and organisations. He cleverly uses a descriptor, the `Ring of Fire', to describe how isolated Targets can become. He brings to life the specific false and unfounded criticism directed at a Target and skilfully cultivated by a Workplace Bully. It is easy to see why team members withdraw and leave the Target to eventual isolation. Robert explains the nuances of each act well and introduces specific descriptors about bullying bosses and their colleagues, who through doing nothing, collude with the Workplace Bully. Robert's depiction, of how the diverse facets of organisations work together to attack a high performer and bring him/her down, is very real.

Part II is a life line for Targets. It describes how to beat the Workplace Bully at his or her own game and become a Workplace Warrior. Robert describes the knowledge, skills and abilities a Target needs in order to take on a Workplace Bully. This is particularly pertinent in small cities and towns and highly specialised environments where jobs are not always plentiful and available and people cannot typically walk away and get another job. People do not speak out because they are afraid of being black listed; rather they stay quiet and tolerate the Workplace Bullying. `Bullying Bosses' describes ways of managing these situations from a position of strength. The book gives action plans for reaction and planning and outcomes to strive for.

This book is a necessary read for senior managers and human resources professionals who truly wish to prevent Workplace Bullying. They will learn what constitutes Workplace Bullying and how it works to break individuals emotionally and therefore impacts self esteem and consequently productivity.

The book is an excellent reference book for Targets who want to fight the silent epidemic and expose Workplace Bullies for the chaos and desolation they cause and the lives they ruin.

Lot's of stuff stuffed into the pages on this one. There are some entries that I do not agree with on a personal level. Efficient Market Theory taken as a pure 'concept' is a bit biased, as well as EBITDA being a bit 'over-used' I just make a little note on the page if the author didn't explain it's use by all groups. This book will allow any person to obtain vast knowledge if they have the patience to actually read the entire treatise. What a goal that would be!?! Great reference for the cheap price.

Apart from articles it contains a Business dictionary, a world almanac and is supported by a web site that updates some of the content and contains summaries of the latest business books.

It's like a deeply discounted subscription to the Harvard Business Review.

I think one of the best things about this book is that it is very encouraging to the patient. The author also discusses the impact of the patient's emotional life on getting & healing cancer.

In my opinion, a combo approach is the best bet at increasing your survival if you have been diagnosed with cancer. The information given here gives you a number of ways you can go about getting that combination therapy. When family members were researching alternative treatments for my grandmother's cancer, we explored this book along with a number of others. This one gave some good information that wasn't presented in other books. We also found a site, iHerb, that offered a variety of cancer fighting supplements along with additional documentation of their abilities. iHerb is a good source if you are seeking the alternatives Bognar mentions in this book.

David Bogner (and Walter Cronkite in the accompanying 4 hr. PBS videotape special) present a balanced introduction that allows someone recently diagnosed with cancer to get an overview of their treatment options. Without favoring a single approach, Bogner covers conventioal treatments, alternative treatments, psychoimmunity and spiritual approaches. Each of these sections presents a wealth of references where additional information can be obtained. Bogner points out that cancer and its course is a very individual matter and that those who do best are often those most informed about their options. Rather than advocating a particular approach, Bogner suggests that different approaches work best together. The book contains all the information presented in the video tape and then some, but the video tapes done by Walter Cronkite are very warm and reassuring. When Bogner's wife got cancer it took him some time to learn about the options. He wrote this book and produced the PBS special so that others faced with cancer could obtain this information more quickly and easily. He has succeeded in providing an excellent generic overview of treatment options. I can't think of a better, non-partisan basic source of information on cancer treatment than this very inexpensive book. It will not give you all the details about your type of cancer, but it will show you in broad outline the various approaches that are available and where to get more information on them.

It was hard to choose how many stars this library worths. It includes 3 completly different books. The Caslow book is absolutly perfect. It's a very good tutorial, probably the best I know. I passed real written test and even I couldn't find answers to some questions from the test in this book, if you want to read just one book and get the maximum information - that's it! You might be not able to answer all questions, but I believe it gives you enough information to pass.

But two other books are completly different. First of all, they are not about cisco. It's just a general theory, a lot of packet structure diagrams and protocol description. Language sometimes is very dull and dry. Many topics, especially in the ATM book are beyond the scope of CCIE exam. Routing book contains a lot of interesting information about routing history, current problems and possible ways of future improvements. Probably, these books are interested to some readers, but it's not the best choice for CCIE preparation.

I put 4 stars just because Caslow book is so good that it makes whole library useful too. But I'd strongly recommend to buy this one book only and spend the rest of money to some other tutorials.

The 2001 edition is a nice addtion to my technical library.

Prentice Hall is fast becoming a name in the IT publishing world for producing material and books that will help everyone obtain just about any certification and the CCIE Resource Library 2001 edition is one set of books that should make passing the exam easier.

The three-book set is comprised of material starting with Book 1 - Routing in the Internet. Over 370 pages covering topics like the Internet and the architecture of the Internet. Also IP v4 and v6 are discussed and compared and then you begin to delve into the routing protocols, both interior and exterior.

The book finishes up with new ideas such as multicasting and overall seems to layout the Internet in fairly easy language. Book 2 - Voice over IP is new to the set and is written by Uyless Black. Black starts this excellent book off with an overview of telephony and the Internet.

Also covered is DSPs, Voice coders, DSL, modems, PPP, the role of the ISP, performance issues, VoIP Protocols, Voice alternatives and ISDN. Black is very good at breaking down the subject matter and making sure the reader can understand the concepts.

Finally comes book 3 - Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIEs 2nd Edition, written by 2 well-respected CCIEs and authors. Over 900 pages broken down into six parts, part one is the configuration of the hardware.

Part 2 is breakdown of IP and the configurations of the routing protocols like RIP, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and BGP. Part 3 deals with non-ip routing, part 4 is bridging and part 5 is for management. Overall the entire collection is some of the best technical material I have seen so far.

One of the toughest, if not the toughest certification to get is CCIE. That's why it's very important to make sure that the books you use are the best out there. Prentice Hall has put together the only CCIE Library I have seen.

In book 1 of the 3 - ATM Volume III - the entire world of ATM is taken apart and dissected for you. Encapsulation, frame relay, DXI and FNNI, LNNI and ARP, multiprotocols over ATM are but a few of the topics discussed in great detail. In the second book - Routing in the Internet 2nd Edition - the book is broken down into 4 parts. Part1 discusses IP and associated protocols including IP V.6. Part 2 takes a look at the interior routing protocols like RIP and OSPF, it does breakdown both RRIP1 and RIP2.

Part 3 is the exterior protocols like BGP and CIDR. Finally in part 4 you have explanations of new developments in multicasting and mobile hosting. The book is well written and well documented and the author really gives a complete look at the internet and how routing is used.

The final book - Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE is written by Andrew Bruce Caslow a CCIE himself. Caslow has written several other book on the CCNA certification and as with the other books this is an excellent reference manual.

The advanced routing techniques like ISDN and DDR as well as excellent coverage of the Catalyst 5000 switch are some the topics Caslow goes over is this book. Caslow also sheds light on ATM and extensive detail on IP Addressing and routing.

Protocols like RIP, IGRP, EIRGP and OSPF as with non-IP routing protocols AppleTalk, DECNET and IPX are broken down for you. Caslow's knowledge of bridging, which includes source route, transparent and translation is nothing short of tremendous.

Caslow's book has sample scenarios, about the only thing it doesn't do it take the test for you. Prentice Hall has a great number of book on computers and networking and you should checkout their website today. Overall this book can be used as a handy reference manual and a study guide for Cisco tests. The price is small in comparison to what you get.

If you prepare for CCIE written test, buy Ccie Resource Library. This 3 volume set will gain your knowledge and experience about internetworking skills. Full of some very usefull case studies, network design, etc. No matter where you are in your progress towards the exam, this book is a worthwhile addition to your Cisco library.

The entire book contains output from numerous working configurations. These examples confirm that the authors did not just throw together another theory book, but have taken the time and effort to create scenarios that can be recreated by the reader. A CD accompanies the book, and contains complete configurations so that the reader can copy and paste them into home lab hardware.

In short, this book is one of the most interesting books concerning certification topics. After you read these 3 set books, I guarantee you pass the CCIE written test. Buy it, and plan to stay up late the night of your purchase. You won't be disappointed.

This book is great for those of us who spend our days caring for others-young and old alike. People who are always focused on caring for the needs of others need to be reminded of how important their own physical needs are and how important it is to develop a routine to take care of themselves so they will be able to care for others. If our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, then we have been charged with the upkeep of those same temples. This book does a good job of reminding us of that! Great reading and definitely one I will recommend to all my friends-especially mothers with kids at home!

I was a divorced mother with two pre-schoolers, overweight and unhappy with my job. Then I got breast cancer. I'm okay now that the treatment is over. I figure it's time for an extreme makeover. So, I heard about Changing Habits from the People's Pharmacy Radio Show and I love it. I read it over and over again to remind me how much control I really have. Debbie's words are so inspiring and real. I don't feel like a victim or act like one anymore. My children are happier, I lost a dress size and my job isn't so bad - at least I have one. Changing Habits really did change my life.

Changing Habits is the ideal book for people who don't have enough hours in the day. We superwomen often forget to add ourselves to the To Do list. This book offers a sensible plan to take care of yourself first so that you have the energy and stamina to take care of everyone and everything else in your busy life.

This book is a MUST for all parents, children, siblings, teachers, friends and spouses. Debbie talks right to you, as if she know what you're thinking.
She stresses how important it is to take care of ourselves, and enjoy ourselves in the processs. I loved the section on how to make housecleaning spiritual (and fun).
I will buy this book as a gift for a friend who just had her first child.

Subtle shifts of focus.

I found Dr. Iorg's approach to be refreshing. He addresses key components of successful leadership by examining the need to develop our internal core values, without ignoring the need of external training. I found his use of subtle shifts in focus extremely practical, soundly biblical, and sometimes humbling. A personal favorite was Dr. Iorg's discussion of facing unpleasant circumstances; being able to shift the focus from ourselves, that despairing and unfruitful "Why me?" approach, to the more teachable "Why this?' approach. One subtle little shift that will broaden our perspective from 'our' world to see our Father's Kingdom and His desire to grow us to be like Christ. A simple and practical way to not just persevere in tough times, but even anticipate relational and character development as we allow our Father's purpose in those unpleasant circumstances to take root in our lives. This teaching is a very good read and is a valuable addition to any leader's library.

What a Book! Simple Yet Profound!

I must have said to myself a dozen times in reading The Character of Leadership this is so simple yet profound. About the second chapter I quit thinking about how this applied to others and how it applied to me as a Christian leader. There were many places I was convicted and challenged in my own personal Christian walk, BUT NEVER felt defeated. Dr. Iorg motivated me to strive to be a better Christian leader as I continuously examined my life and continue to examine my life. I read the book two times and will pick it up often as I strive to implement the nine qualities Dr. Iorg refers to in the book. A must read.

Not Your Typical "Leadership" Book

So many "leadership" books basically say the same thing, just with a little "twist" for flavor. This is not one of them. Iorg speaks about the character that forms our values that shapes our leadership style. It doesn't matter how many leadership books you read, or how many leadership principles you attempt to practice, if your character is bent on selfish, self-centered intents, your leadership is destined to fail. If you want to see your leadership traits "reshaped" based on the true essentials of godly character, this is a book you must read!

Every Christian leader...

Every Christian leader needs this book! Wow!
I read it in one sitting--just couldn't put it down. Although Dr. Iorg is definitely an academian, this is much more than just an intellectual thesis. It's power-packed with ministry-enhancing challenges for anyone in Christian leadership. I particularly enjoyed Dr. Iorg's personal illustrations and very practical suggestions for character-building. Buy this one for every Christian leader you love.
