Fascinating and fast read

I have to say that this was a wonderful read for me. By citing only the titles, authors, and in a few cases, an extract of the referenced publications, I was able to read through the equivalent of 400 books on Philippine history in a matter of hours.

Obviuosly, for the time-pressed scholar, there is much to be gained in condensing all this down to bare minimum. Also, this makes a great bibliography, whether you cite 1, 2 or all 400 works! What a tremendous time saver.

'A List of Books' really enhanced my knowledge of Philippine Island.

I love this book. I am homeschooling and find this to be one of my very favorite resource books. It is organized by historical period and then by grade level. I have found that using literature to teach history really brings it alive for my daughter.

Literature of Delight: a Critical Guide to Humorous Books for Children gives a comprehensive (for its time)overview of books for children. It is useful as a retrospective tool for collection development in libraries as well as an aid to guide parents. This book is an important contribution to humour, a field that lightens our day, our spirits and even has health benefits. For current books, it would still pay to follow up what the authors are writing today.

Locked Room Murders and Other Impossible Crimes: A Comprehensive Bibliography

Astonishing scope

Review Date: 1998-05-10
Robert Adey has compiled a remarkable volume for any fan of the locked-room or "impossible" crime in mysteries. This volume lists over 2,000 separate stories (from the short story to the novel) and includes information about the puzzle presented (e.g., the victim was stabbed in an empty room while the only entrance was under constant guard), the sources where one might find the story (e.g., a particular magazine or publisher), and the solution. It is fortunate that Mr. Adey had the good sense to include the solutions in a separate section so that the reader of the volume is not likely to happen upon this information by accident.

For those who are not familiar with the locked-room crime, it is a sub-genre of mystery or crime fiction, and the "howdunnit" aspect often takes center stage. Locked-room puzzles are not without their problems, and Mr. Adey deals with them in the essays that introduce the book, but when done well, a locked-room mystery is a thing of beauty. For those who agree with this assessment, Mr. Adey's hefty tome is an invaluable resource. (It should be noted, however, that not all of the crimes in "Locked Room Murders" are in fact murders. Some are thefts, and some are other crimes.) Perhaps the only substantial criticism is that the book could benefit from the addition of indeces. As it is, the mysteries are listed alphabetically by author.

Great Collection Covers Major Themes
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-08
This book has a great collection of stories and profound themes. One way to use this book is to pair up the stories. For example, one can look at "The Misfit's Misguided Quest for Love" by studying "Bartleby" by Melville and "The Overcoat" by Gogol.

Another good pairing is to study "Lost Love and Alcohol" by looking at "Babylon Revisted" by Fitzgerald and "The Swimmer" by John Cheever. In both stories the characters lose free will as their self-destructiveness reaches a point of no return.

The power of empathy to remove blindness can be found by looking at Raymond Carver's "A Small, Good Thing" and "Cathedral." Another great story about the power of empathy is Richard Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues."

Also take a look at "Gimpel the Fool" by Singer and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" to study the love and widsom of fools.

The dangers of intellectual pride are dramatized in Flanner O'Conner's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown."

Yet another fine pairing can be found by studying the conflict between romantic, personal love and public responsibility in Chekhov's "The Lady with the Dog" and John Updike's "Separating."

One of my favorite pairings is to study "The Love of the Tribe over the Love of Humanity" by studying "Those Who Walked Away from Omelas" and "The Lottery."

There are even far more stories than the ones I've mentioned. But these pairings give you an idea of how many themes you can study in a collection as rich as this one.
