Invaluable for the Verne Collector
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-15
This book includes index of titles & addenda; the books; collected works; works about Verne; notes; source editions and is an expansion and emendation of the work originally published in 1988. The Myers' work was the first organized attempt to describe Verne first editions and first printings in English from a collector's perspective, written by collectors for collectors. To make it, Edward and Judith Myers drew on the experiences of other collectors, of the Library of Congress, and of the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana. Throughout the bibliography are notes which touch on issues important to collectors, such as what makes a book truly rare, and what makes it beautiful and desirable? What even constitutes a Verne "first edition" and how can it be identified? When is a later edition a more valuable acquisition? The bibliography is an in-depth examination, as it were, of a smaller cross section of the Verne oeuvre.

A Jussi Bjorling Phonography (Musik I Sverige, 6.)

Essential reference
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-31
This is the one basic and essential reference on the studio andperformances recordings of Jussi Bjorling. Henrysson documents all thestudio sessions and live performances and X-references each selection to the vinyl, tape or CD on which it appears.

Despite the enormous number of CD's currently available ( Amazon has about 150 items, for example) the number of things recorded is relatively small, so this book is really the only way to keep from being covered up with duplicates.

It is possible to locate a particular session or go the other way, and find out what's on a record. Items recorded in the studio are numbered in sequence; live recordings have a year prefix, followed by numbers in sequence for that year.

This is as close as it gets to a critical biography of Bjorling and certainly makes listening to all the wonderful things currently available much more fun.

Northern Virginia History
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-21
Copies of the original edition of this book, published in 1924, and the first reprint, published in 1964, have now disappeared from view, carefully guarded in public and private libraries. The difficulty in obtaining this invaluable reference has long frustrated the many readers who want to learn more about Old Prince William County. This edition was sponsored by the county's Historical Commission in 1987.

Author Fairfax Harrison was born in New York City in 1869, but he was a Virginian by ancestry of many generations. (His father was secretary to Jefferson Davis during the Civil War; his mother was a descendant of the Fairfax family.) A lawyer and railroad executive, he found time to research family and Northern Neck history, and publish more than sixty books on those subjects. He retired to Fauquier County, where he lived on the family estate "Belvoir," named after the original Fairfax seat and located in what was once part of Prince William County.
Old Prince William County comprised what is now all or part of the Virginia counties of Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier and Arlington; and the city of Alexandria.

724 pages, with index. The back pocket part holds a fold-out map of the county.

Having a somewhat extensive Latin music collection that includes,45's, 78's, lp's(yes, I can and do still play them), some tapes, both cassette and reel to reel and into the modern digital era formats, I was more than curious to see what was considered "essential." The author, Sue Steward, who also wrote "Salsa, Musical Heartbeat of America," gives a bit of a disclaimer in the acknowledgement by stating the difficulty in selecting 100 essential discs among the thousnds of choices covering so many decades and so many countries aand varied genres. The result is a book that draws heavily on salsa( remember the title of her book) but the contributing specialists reviews of other styles of Latin music gives the book a pretty good balance. The terrific thing is the convenience of this handy mini- pocket book that can fit into the pocket of a mans shirt pocket! You can take this book anywhere and read it anytime to get information on your "unknown discovery" or to read about one of your favorite discs. Each disc is very professionally and competently reviewed. Each review is about two pages and besides the actual music information there are complete biographical backgrounds on the artists, the development of the musical style, including influences and assorted interesting side notes. Since the book is limited to 100 cd's at the end of the review there are a few suggestions for further exploration of either the artist or similar artists within the genre. There is lots to discover in this mini-book. This is a good book for the person looking for some of the best Latin muisc ever, whether the shopping is virtual or real this book will inform and help you make a better decision on your next selection. I have enjoyed reading this book and keep it handy when it comes time to add a new disc to the collection. Curiously I did find a few personal "gems" missing but why complain if what you get in return is learning about what you haven't heard. The musical years covered spans many decades and the styles range from bossa nova to cumbias, salsa to boleros, rocnEspanol to merengue, Latin jazz to Cuban, Tango to folkloric and just about everything else considered Latin. This is a great little book for a great little price. The price is absolutely right and you'll have change from that new colorful twenty to buy your new "discovery" cd in Latin music. There is a small section on websites suggested to buy the discs, which includes Amazon with as Sue Steward says, "seemingly bottomless well of stock."

Researched and written by retired educator Frances Ann Day, this one-of-a-kind book has many special features and an amazing amount of important information. Day believes that reading authors as well as books allows us to dwell for a while in the inner life of the writer. She researched and wrote this book easy-to-use book to provide recognition of the lives and works of Latina and Latino authors who write for children and young adults. The result is an indispensable guide to the vibrant body of literature created by authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Gary Soto, Pat Mora, and Rudolfo Anaya. This passionate tribute to both established and emerging authors features biographies, photographs, book lists, related works, and intellently written, in-depth book reviews and much more. Highly recommended.
