McIver's bibliography is exceptionally comprehensive with thoughtful annotations. This book is a useful entrance to the anti-evolution literature. (Number's (1992) book "The Creationists" tells the fascinating story.) The bulk of the references are from the late 20th century (to 1986-87), reflecting the fact that this is an especially recent phenomenon, but it is also quite comprehensive for the earlier literature. Some literature that is relevant but not anti-evolution or religious is included. The bibliography by James L. Hayward (1998) "The Creation/Evolution Controversy" is also excellent, treating the literature since 1981, including both theistic and non-theistic authors.

It is great that evolution is being proved wrong by science nowadays, as it will lead more people seeing the real world as it is. This book not only reviews some of the facts, but gives some of the details on Creationism and what Creationism really means, that the earth is 6000 years old and that evolution can be proved wrong by anatomy, astronomy, biology, geology, etc.

Excellent resource for teaching and research

Great stuff. McIver neatly reviews anti-evolution (in the broadest sense) before and after Darwin. Thought provoking in that is shows the mental tricks critics will turn to avoid contradicting the Genesis account and agreeing with Darwin.

It's a shame the revised edition wasn't updated. Still, highly useful.

As an aside, it's highly unlikely that the comment above attributed to McIver is true. McIver comes across as one who _always_ belived in evolution (see, for example, his articles in "Creation/Evolution" and "Skeptic") ... methinks I smell a hoax.

This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
NOLO Press is noted for making legal information accessible to ordinary people. This topic is something that every supervisor and employer needs to be briefed on.

I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.

Every business with employees that does not have a sexual harassment policy in place needs to buy this book now.

Actions the authors say employers need to implement regarding sexual harassment include: Do whatever it takes to understand the law, the issues, and keep current; put in place a zero tolerance sexual harassment prevention policy that prohibits specific behaviors of verbal harassment, non-verbal tactics, and physical harassment; take action to stop sexual harassment that does occur and prevent reoccurrence and reprisals.

Just The Facts, Man

A fabulous Beatles "timeline diary" of their professional activities. It reads alot better than that description though. Helps one to focus on the myriad of events that the Beatles experienced and endured. You will read it and wonder how they had the energy to do what they did. An exhausting lifestyle. A great starting point to understand the internal Beatles experience. Presented in "day by day" diary format.

Not novelized. Not embellished. Just facts. A working documentary rather than a sensational expose'. Extremely useful to the serious collector.

Harrowing.

weiner divides his book into easy to decipher and read chronologies and for this he deserves a medal. though all of the information he gathers is available elsewhere having it in one volume is particularly useful . his concise chapter on various versions and mixes of the songs is a godsend.

Easily the single most valuable Beatles reference in print.

A dream-come-true for any Beatles fan or collector, this is the only up-to-date, complete, accurate Beatles record reference published to date. The only books in the Beatles literature that can compare with the quality and value of this volume are those written by Mark Lewisohn, particularly his "COMPLETE BEATLES CHRONICLE." Wiener's book, unlike Lewisohn's, includes every recording the Beatles ever made, both as a group and later as individual solo artists. It also includes all of their unreleased recordings, of which there are hundreds ranging from studio outtakes to crude home demos, rehearsals, concerts, radio and television appearances, and even recorded interviews. Of even greater value is the listing of dozens or bootleg records and CDs on which these rarities and curiosities can be heard. With the exception of the recent "ANTHOLOGY" releases, the book is a complete, accurate guide to all known Beatles recordings, and at an incredibly low price. The book is divided into several well-organized sections, including a recording chronology of their released material, U.S. and British discographies, a chronology of unreleased recordings and bootleg releases of them, a list of alternate versions (there are an amazing number of these), rare special releases, plus appendixes listing guest appearances by the Beatles on other artists' recordings, and video releases. There are a number of other Beatles references that claim expertise for their authors and accuracy and completeness of information, but these must be viewed as "pretenders" when stacked up against Wiener or Lewisohn; they are the class in their league. I am so pleased with this book -it helps me to plan lessons with my speech-language kids by using the children's books that they already know! I get so much help from this source, I don't what I would do without it! I use it with my own child, too. The activities are so fun and creative, there is never a dull moment. Hats off to J. Gebers for giving both teachers and parents such a great reference tool!

A comprehensive resource for using children's picture books.

Review Date: 1999-10-17
This resource catalogs hundreds of low-text children's picture books that are ideal for promoting interaction and conversation with children while reading aloud. A brief synopsis, suggested interest levels and methods for use coordinate for each book listed. Suggestions are given on how to use a particular children's book to enhance language development and other oral communication skills.

Originally written for speech-language pathologists, this revised edition is suitable for regular and special education teachers (from preschool on up) as well for parents who want to maximize their read-aloud times with their children in order to stimulate good language development. Many listed books are classic, familiar favorites, and most are currently available in school and public libraries, at bookstores, and on-line.

Do you want to encourage a particular language skill? Just look up what you want to enhance (whether it's vocabulary building, grammatical structures, critical thinking and more) in the easy-to-use Skills Index (p. 317) and find the book in 1, 2 or all 3 catalog sections. (One catalog for preschool through kindergarten, one catalog for children grades 1-5, and another catalog for children grades 6-12.)

Parents will find suggestions for selecting picture books that build good oral language skills as well as suggestions for how to read aloud to stimulate interaction and good communication skills in their children.

Teachers will find this a timesaving resource that includes reproducible handouts for parents (ideal for suggestions at parent conferences), books organized by thematic units (see Topic Exploration Index on p. 303) as well as loads of classroom activities for each book listed in the catalogs.

This is an all-around, time saving resource that gives a reader the extensive background needed for tapping the bounty of children's literature. It has been a popular best seller in its publisher's line of educational materials for many years.

The price of this book is high. As an educator, I found it well worth the cost. I can link all language goals with literacy. Ideas for articulation, pragrmatics, social skills, etc. are included. Gebers provides an excellent resource for language rich books. I have used her lessons with Eleanor and Ameilia go For a Ride, The Wolf's Side of the Story, The Cremation of Sam Magee and many more. I have worked on the topics of seeing other's perspectives, making inferences, articulation, pragmatics etc.. Content rich book. Highly Recommended!!!

This book is so very helpful in planning speech and language therapy. The books suggested have been well researched, the plans explicit and easy to implement. I loved this book so much I used it as the "bible" of a group study another speech therapist and I did last year. She had never used literature as extensively as I have. As we delved into the wonderful children's books and how to use them, she found it to be an approach that is fun for both therapist and child, motivating and effective in bringing about significant change in children's speech and language.

My enthusiasm was so effervescent about this book that my daughter, now a grad student in speech and language is using this book to help her plan for activities with her clinical literacy group.

I bought this book quite a few years ago and am assuming that it remains essentially the same. If you know who Carl Barks is, and if you appreciate/enjoy his definitive comic book Duck stories, especially "Uncle Scrooge" (whom he created) and the Donald Duck feature in the old "Walt Disney's Comics & Stories", then you absolutely must have this book, despite its kingly price in hardcover. My first edition copy has no interior color and the b&w pics are not the best reproduction quality but, still, it is something that any self-respecting Barks fan must have in their library.

THE "GOOD DUCK ARTIST" DID MORE THAN DUCKS

Back when I was just a tater, I spent a lot of time waiting anxiously with the other kids for the next Donald Duck comic to hit the stands at the drugstore. Even at this undiscriminating stage, we all knew that one artist drew and wrote better Donald Duck stories than anyone else. He used exciting words that expanded our vocabularies, and his pictures were full of wonderful, imaginative details for us to pore over. We called him the "Good Duck Artist." The GDA, of course, was Carl Barks. His stories were filled with wry humor which made it possible for our folks to appreciate his comics as much as we did. If you haven't been introduced to Barks and his work, you've missed out -- and this book belongs in your library. It gives the comic aficianado a look at Barks' life, career, and artistic vision, beyond just "the ducks." From his early, sometimes rather racy work for "Coo Coo" and other "spicy" magazines to his current jewel-like oil paintings (of ducks and other subjects), this book provides a comprehensive review of a unique body of work by a surprisingly complex man. Whether you're an aspiring comic artist, or a Barks fan who wants to know more about Barks, or if you're just looking for a good book with lots of fun comic art, you should find something of interest here.

"Carl Barks and the Art of the Comic Book is the very long-awaited biography/bibliography/critique fo the Good Artist's work by Michael Barrier. It is published in a handsome, sturdy, well-designed hardcover edition by M. Lilien of New York, with a lovely dust jacket featuring a self-caricature of Barks on the front and a color photo of the Duck Man on the back. Inside you will find a detailed account of Barks' life and career, with each story discussed and highlighted. There are many photos of Barks as a young man, sketches and cartoons he did for the Calgary Eye-Opener and as inter-office gags at the Disney Studios... If you are a fan of Carl Barks, you simply, absolutely, positively and unquestionably must have this book and right now. If you are a comic-book student, you must have this book to see how thoroughly and well comics can and should be studied..." -- Don & Maggie Thompson, The Buyer's Guide For Comic Fandom (R)

"...Barrier covers not only the life of Barks but his particular thematic preoccupations (the "rescue theme" in which the parent/child roles are reversed is documented with considerable wisdom, for instance). The photos of Barks, his house, and other people he worked with are precious glimpses on an important period in comic book history, and the many drawings by Barks and others constitute a real treasure trove for both fans and scholars..." -- Cat Yronwode, The Buyer's Guide For Comic Fandom (R)

Great unknown American history

I've always been fond of books that dealt with hidden and little-known history. This is a good example of such.

Essentailly, you have documents from American history going all the way back the 1600s that involve people who went against the status quo.

In one book, you have antislavery Quakers and abolitionists, early feminists, American Indians speaking out against their oppression, American Loyalists during the American Revoution and Union loyalists from the South during the civil war, populists, Black Panthers, socilaists, racists, archconservatives, anarchists, and anti war activists from just about every war including the current one. All speak in their own voice.

Of course no one will agree with everything said here, but it's good to bring these people's words to light to put the struggles of our own time in their proper context.

This excellent, exhaustive anthology includes the great essays and documents written by dissenters from before the founding of the colonies to the present time. The author has done a fine job of providing a narrative history of the United States through the ideas and ideals of famous and little known Americans who exercised their cherished right to express themselves about the state of the country. Included are all the important themes--abolition, civil rights, women's rights, anti-war, taxation, etc.--that define America. A good feature is that it includes dissent from the Right and the left.
This hefty collection is ideal for discussion groups and college courses or for keeping on a nightstand to be read at leisure. At a time when our rights as citizens are being questioned and tested, this is an inspiring and comforting work, which emphasizes that dissent is older than the United States and a privilege and obligation of its citizens.

Dissent In America

Review Date: 2006-12-06
Professor Ralph Young's book Dissent in America is a remarkable journey through American History using dissent as the theme, which, as the author points out, "has played a central role in the American experience". The book is much more than a compendium of writings on dissent. The author's clear and concise introduction to each reading creates the thread that ties that reading to what was happening in the country. There is a wealth of information in this volume. One can read Abigail Adams' letters to her husband, off writing the Constitution, asking that women be remembered in the document (he condescendingly brushes her off). Every major dissenter from Roger Williams to Cindy Sheehan is represented in this book Of course, for this writer the best part of Dissent in America is the 1960s (mostly because he lived through them). Be sure to read all of "Mobilization: Vietnam and the Counterculture, 1964-1975". This is an excellent resume of the protests and songs and manifestos that were so much a part of that period. Not so surprisingly a lot of what is included in that section remains contemporary (you might want to look up Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" on YouTube).

Don't assume that this book deals only with leftist and liberal dissent and critiques of American Society. Dr. Young also presents articles from the Michigan Militia, Theodore Kaczynski, and Father Coughlin (who happens to be included in the book, just before Emma Goldman and Woody Guthrie). Dissent in America is a complete discourse which should appeal to anyone interested in American History. It is not only invaluable for students of the history of the United States, but also the general public who might want to understand all the forces which made America a great country.

This children's books reference is so prized because the biography of the creators inspired me to look at how I can enrich my children now - in ways these creators personal experiences have developted from their own childhood. The creators' biographies and interviews have opened my mind to the possibilities for today's children to follow and try these creators' paths to becoming authors and illustrators. Also, I loved learning which colleges some of the creators have attended, which is a good resource to finding the possible colleges for the artistically inclined children.

It includes 475 biographical/critical entries on current and classic writers and illustrators as well as essays on topics such as chapter books, poetry, fantasy, and book design. A special "Voices of the Creators" feature presents thirty personal essays from writers such as Katherine Paterson, Kevin Henkes, and Lois Lowry. There's also a useful graded booklist. Highly recommended for parents, writers, readers, and school and public librarians.

I'm a children's book editor, and run a web site called "The Purple Crayon," where I review this book in detail. Here are some excerpts from that review:

The Essential Guide to Children's Books and Their Creators is a handy one-volume reference for anyone working in the field, and also both fun and informative to browse....

Set up like an encyclopedia, the Guide includes more than 475 entries and an index in 500 pages. It opens with a great "Basic Reading List" and then goes to the A-Z listing, which mostly consists of entries about specific authors and illustrators of children's books. Most are American, most are 20th century, but there are people from the 19th century and other countries (for example, George MacDonald, Carlo Collodi, Astrid Lindgren, Margaret Mahy). Some entries on living writers and illustrators are followed by a first-person statement, "Voices of the Creators."

I count 31 feature articles on other subjects, mostly types or genres of books. Examples: "African-American Children's Books," "Alphabet Books," "Series Books," "Middle Grade Fiction," and "Information Books."

I think few readers will quibble with the selections: the authors and illustrators who appear here belong here. Of course, I did find some personal favorites missing, as may just about anyone who has read many children's books....

On the whole, though, this is an excellent and compact reference. You'll find well-written and informative essays on the artists and writers you look up, and random browsing is amply rewarded. If you aren't familiar with American children's literature, this is a good place to start to learn. If you already know the field, you'll still find things you don't know.

(This book is derived from the longer and more expensive Children's Books and Their Creators (1995), which Anita Silvey edited while she was still editor-in-chief of the Horn Book magazine. This edition includes a selection of entries from that book, plus 100 new entries to bring it up to date.)
