Several friends of mine, in the battered women's movement, recommended this book years ago. I regret not having read it earlier! This book is not limited to the exploration of homophobia,it explores all forms of hate and how these oppressions: violence against women, sexism, racism, classism, and homophobia, are linked. If you're even slightly interested in one of these issues --BUY THIS BOOK !

The ultimate Stephen King bibliography
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-08
Horror Plum'd: An International Stephen King Bibliography and Guide (the title of which is derived from a passage in John Milton's Paradise Lost) is an amazing reference work best suited for those with a scholarly interest in the writings of the modern master of the macabre; it is also a work that the most fanatical of Stephen King fans will want to add to their collection. This book is not for casual fans because it is almost exclusively a bibliographic resource. After a short introductory essay, Collings gets right to work detailing the massive inventory of Stephen King items released all over the world in the years between 1960 and 2000. The bibliography is broken up into five sections, the first and largest of which is a rundown of all the books. Section A references novels, short story collections, nonfiction works, and multimedia adaptations of King's works (audiotapes, audio CDs, computer games, films, stage plays, teleplays and miniseries, and movies). It almost boggles the mind to see page after page detailing the publication history of Stephen King novels in countries throughout the world. Collings provides very short summaries and offers brief comments about the major works as he proceeds in a chronological fashion, and a limited number of images from different versions of King's books are included in these pages. Section B is devoted to short fiction including published excerpts from longer works and screenplays published in anthologies, and Collings provides short comments on many of the more interesting items found here. Section C is devoted to King's short nonfiction writings. I find this section to be particularly useful because it includes references to all the books by other authors and editors which feature introductions and forewords penned by Stephen King. Section D references the locations of King's limited poems, and Section E sweeps up what is left: audio and visual adaptations of original King materials not appearing in book form. This is followed by a title index of King's works.

Horror Plum'd is the culmination of over fifteen years of hard work on the part of Collings. Between 1985 and 1996, he published three less comprehensive Stephen King bibliographies (The Many Facets of Stephen King, The Annotated Guide to Stephen King: A Primary and Secondary Bibliography of the Works of America's Premier Horror Writer, and The Work of Stephen King: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide), but Horror Plum'd is the final, comprehensive edition of his work on this subject. Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind about this book is the fact that it includes only a select few references to articles and reviews of King's work. This 547 page text is by and large devoted only to the work of Stephen King himself and not the cottage industry of King pundits. Collings is working on a companion book to Horror Plum'd that will be exclusively devoted to scholarship, criticism, and reviews. One can hardly imagine just how large such a volume will turn out to be.

As a former Submariner and as an avid reader, I am impressed with the scope of this reissued work. The Bibliography proper will assist any researcher who delves into information regarding Submarines, US Navy Submarines and their development and use. The video listing is the most exhaustive I have ever seen.

The addition of various appendixes greatly expands the usefulness and depth of the work. Mr. Martini has provided historical sources and references that will save the researcher much time in his hunt for information. The listing of the Submarine Museums is especially important for those who read Submarine books and want to visit an historical vessel; however it is also important to those who will come along and write submarine books who have no idea of the difference of WWII Submarines and modern Nuclear submarines. The addition of information on deck logs and how and where that information may be obtained is of critical importance to one who wishes to obtain the most detailed information available of what happened in the past.

This book is a must have for any serious Submarine reader, researcher or dillitante just beginning his appreciation of Submarines.

Record Companies Are Run By Dorks

Hot Wacks is an essential guide for bootleg recordings. Collectors want alternate takes, live recordings, rare singles, vinyl record versions, and out-of-print albums by their favorite artists. Bootlegs are prohibited by law in stores, and downloading or sharing music is illegal on the internet. Record companies rarely release this material because they are more interested in exploiting new artists to make more money. Collectors have no choice but to break outdated laws enforced by the RIAA, much like bootleggers did against prohibition. All the record companies have to do is open an official website and let people download this material for a reasonable fee. I am available as a consultant if they are interested.

A Must-Have for Every Piano Teacher
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-19
If you can only own one pedagogy text, this is the one to buy. Dr. Bastien gives one of the best explanations of the four basic approaches to piano teaching (middle C, landmark/interval, gradual multikey, intensive multikey) I've seen. He then reviews a number of piano courses using the criteria he develops in the text. Most of the courses are older, and a few are even out of print. That is an advantage if this is used as the basal text for a pedagogy course, as the instructor can have the students write reviews of the courses in current use.

Dr. Bastien's bias towards the gradual multikey approach is evident throughout the book, and the multikey approach forms the basis for the year-by-year descriptions in the center chapters of the text. I personally believe in an approach that blends the landmark/interval approach with the multikey approach, and hence found the year-by-year material to be of tremendous value. If every teacher in America taught piano the way Bastien recommends, we would greatly improve the quality of teaching of the average teacher.

The lists of recomeended supplemental materials alone justify the purchase of this book. There is also a wonderful chapter explaining which editions of classical masterworks are the best to purchase. That chapter has become my personal shopping list.

The only weakness of this book (and also a weakness in the Bastien courses) is the fact that the author doesn't offer a useful strategy for learning the notes or for decoding an unknown note. Bastien simply states that drill is often needed into the second and even third year of lessons. In my experience, if an effective strategy (such as landmarks) is used, the extensive drill is not needed.

If a teacher wants to develop a library of pedagogy texts, this is the one I would recommend buying and reading first.

The book's great strength is its organization, making it extremely accessible to students. Libraries are indispensable resources for students of all ages, and not everyone knows how to use them to their best advantage. This book tells you how. I can't think of a better gift for a student- it will pay dividends throughout their life.

As someone who works privately with students, helping them with term papers, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with a term paper, I recommend that they buy this book to use as a guide and a reference book. As the title states, this is a "how to" book, and it addresses the concerns that students have about term papers. It is a practical and easy to use guide.

Humphrey Goes to the Ball
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-01
This is the last book in the quartet about Humphrey the Hippo and his friend Bird. The other books in this series are (in order); Humphrey the Hippo, Humphrey's New Trousers, and Humphrey of the Rovers.

In this one, Humphrey is overjoyed to be invited to the Mayor's Fancy Dress Ball. As it is a Fancy Dress Ball, Humphrey and Bird (Humphrey's faithful sidekick) must find something to dress up as. They decide to dress Humphrey up as a pirate, and Bird gets to be his parrot.

At the ball, Humphrey has a wonderful time dancing, especially when another hippo shows up. Humphrey gets exited, and dances wildly with the hippo. When the dance ends, Humphrey throws the hippo up in the air, and accidentally drops it! The hippo's head comes off, revealing the Mayor sitting in the rest of his costume.

Humphrey apologizes for dropping him on the floor, and the mayor responds " `No harm done, but I want you to do something for me.' `What's that' asked Humphrey. `Take some dancing lessons before next year's Ball!' "

This book is absolutely wonderful. Its style is straightforward and endearing. The pictures are bold, colorful and funny. This one is not my favorite in the series, but it is still wonderful. It is a big shame that this series is out of print.
