For all purposes, this book can be considered the companion
volume to the _Motif-Index_of_Folk-Literature_, Thompson's
encyclopedic classification of all known myths and
folk-tales. _Types_of_the_Folktale_ expounds the presence
of syncretic motifs and themes cross-culturally, and then
explains the basis of Aarne and Thompson's study, which
resulted in the Motif-Index. Most books doing a study of
mythography will simply presume you have read this first.

When hunting for Hubbard collectibles, I found this book to be very valuable. I've dug up books I never knew existed thanks to this volume. Barnes & Noble's used book site is excellent to find these out of print items listed in The Fiction of L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard's fiction, especially his early 1930s-1940s work was top of the line at the time, with his pals Asimov and Heinlein at the helm.
I found that Ace Publishing and DAW books had anthologies that I had never heard of that had a Hubbard story in it. Quite a valuable reference work if you're hunting down valuable collectibles. Some of these, such as Andre Norton's "Space Police" has a Hubbard story in this anthology that's worth several hundred dollars, so the search can be a fun one. Then use Amazon or Barnes & Noble to find them.
This is basically a giant bibliography, organized by date and publisher and gives a few tidbits of what's what in the fiction world at that time.
I was also amazed how cheap this book is on Amazon! If you're looking for collectibles such as vintage pulps and paperbacks from the Golden Age of Science Fiction, pick up this book!

This and its predecessors are books for all seasons about a man for all seasons. We all owe our lives to him. It is a book for the hard working and the pampered, for nations that cut funds for their Veterans Administrations like the United States has almost continually done, and for parents who wonder how much more to pamper their little darlings so that they will be loved as fathers and mothers. Montgomery beat the best that Hitler could send against him and us, and he did the same wherever he was sent. His expertise was strategy, not politics, not taking advantage of interns or skipping out on his wife. We need a few more like him.

This essay is Chapter 13 of Hollywood as Historian (UP of Kentucky, 1998, 2nd ed; Ed, Peter C. Rollins), but a more recent guide to this topic is THE COLUMBIA COMPANION TO AMERICAN HISTORY ON FILM (2004), a massive guide to the subject.
The author is editor of Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television Studies and much on this topic is covered each year by the journal. See the web site: www.filmandhistory.org for copious details.
We cannot overdo the study of the relationship between visual media and our understanding of current politics and past history!

This book is a bibliography of the literature of film and television. It has a listing of some 1244 books on the film and television industry. The entries are broken down into categories such as journals, country, genres, formats, studios, ethnic groups, gender and sexual orientation, making films, fans, and more.

What a wealth of information! If you love lists, you'll love this book, as it comprehensively details the composers (and orchestrators) who wrote the background scores, often anonymously, in the golden age of American motion pictures. It ends at 1970, which may seem arbitrary, but you can't complain about the author's resourcefulness in researching the extant archives of the major Hollywood studios. Invaluable for libraries and fact-collectors who want to know "who really wrote that score".

This book is a one-volume look at mystery fiction in almost all of its forms. It is a compilation of interviews, essays, articles, and lists as presented by writers, editors, critics, and booksellers. There are ample photos, many taken from movies which were made from mystery stories. Remember the lurid and exotic book covers from the 50's? Well, there's photos of some of the more popular covers. Each chapter is begun with reproductions of archaic depictions of mayhem. There are articles about apparently well-known and well-regarded authors that I have never heard of, and I consider myself, not an authority, but at least well-read and as such, familiar with many of the less popular ones. I know I was very pleased to learn of several new authors that I plan to add to my ever-growing list. This is a fact-filled book and is a welcome addition to any mystery reader's library. It can provide hours of satisfying browsing. The articles and essays are excellent and informative, well written, and offer opinions on various aspects of mystery stories, writers, and the genre in general. For instance, the well-known mystery writer, Lawrence Block, offers a superlative dissertation on the definition of hard-boiled and cozy mystery stories. The introduction by Jon Breen is a veritable history of mystery stories. As you probably know, the origins of the modern detective story is usually traced back to Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1840's). Did you also know that the detective in that story, C. Auguste Dupin, appeared in another two tales by Poe? The school of romantic suspense owes its beginnings to gothic novelists like Ann Radcliffe with her "The Mysteries of Udolpho" (1794), Horace Walpole with "The Castle of Otranto" (1765), and Matthew Gregory Lewis with "The Monk" (1796). The chapter headings include American Mysteries which has Mysteries of New York, Mysteries of Los Angeles, Mysteries of Chicago, .......Small Towns, New England. Chapter 2 is entitled Traditional Mysteries and includes cozies, cat and dog stories, and an excellent essay on John Dickson Carr and the locked room mystery. Chapter 3 is about the Black detective, and Chapter 4 covers Religious Mysteries. In Chapter 5 the Private Eye Mysteries are discussed and Chapter 6 is about Gay Mysteries. Chapter 7 talks about British Mysteries and offers up the information that Jonathan Gash (Lovejoy series) and Mike Ripley (Angel series) just happen to live in the same small village in England. Chapter 8 is about Dark Suspense and Chapter 9 discusses Women's Suspense stories. Chapter 10 describes Police Procedurals while Chapter 11 outlines the Hard-Boiled Mysteries. Chapter 12 discusses Thrillers and other chapters cover Young Adult Mysteries, True Crime, Television Mysteries, Comic Books, Nostalgia, Organizations, and Mystery Bookstores Throughout the book are "Best of" lists compiled by various writers, editors, critics. I have visited a couple of these bookstores and if both are indicative of the others then any are worth a visit. I found comfortable, stuffed armchairs strategically located in small nooks, with a small table and lamp nearby, inviting the browser to sit awhile and skim a few lines. The pervading atmosphere was one of hominess and a warm hearth. Definitely inviting. So "The Fine Art of Murder" is heartily recommended as an addition to the reader's library, whether a mystery fan or not. It is entertaining as well as informative.

The First Folio of 1623, our most important single source for Shakespeare's plays, is now available in this attractive volume at a price that individuals can afford. Doug Moston has written a fine and informative introduction to this reprint, mainly from the vantage point of the needs of today's actors. But scholars and Shakespeare lovers will want to have this book, too, since the First Folio is of major importance for the establishment of Shakespeare's texts, and for checking the conjectures of generations of editors who have tried to "fix" readings in the text that they thought were misprints. This is an essential reference and a fun book to browse, too

(Note: This is a review of the full FIVE volume set, the four volume set is not nearly as good.)
The FPAA as it is known in the book world is an outstanding reference for modern literature collectors and dealers. It suffers from the same problem as all printed bibliographies - aging, but really is perfect for what it is. The volumes are arranged alphabetically and voulmes 4 and 5 have cumulative indexes. The author's works are then arranged chronologically with a guide to what the copyright page says for a true first. In addition, there is often a handy reproduction of what the title page looks like.
This was originally a four volume set and a few years later, Gale publishing added a fifth volume and redid the index. This fifth volume has some important authors (William S. Burroughs, Zane Grey, Nabokov, Upton Sinclair) so I strongly encourage those considering purchase to obtain a full set. I have more than made my money back on this set as a bookdealer due to improved knowledge (hint: there is no Scribner "A" of firsts before 1928).
