scholarly, but a must for all Jane Austen book collectors

This book is a marvelous tool for collectors of Jane Austen's books. Gilson has obviously performed a thorough investigation and produced a polished piece which comes fairly close to being complete. As a collector, I have only rarely come across editions of jane austen's work which Gilson has not detailed in his book. The occassional pictures included within the text were a welcome treat. I had hoped to see more but detailed descriptions painted quite vivid and accurate pictures within my mind.
This book was not intended for light reading. It is scholarly and reference oriented. It is the kind of a book a collector would need at his side constantly, not one to be read from cover to cover and then placed on the shelf.
The only criticism I have of Gilson's work is that he neglects to include any trace of the emotion that one would expect from someone who liked, respected, even loved an author enough to spend so much time on her work.
For myself, I thrill at finding old editions of Jane Austen's books. Thumbing through the leaves of these books is like entering a time machine. It's both an intriguing and surreal experience which has kept me interested for many years.

Arthuriana resource

Arthuriana, of which subject there is an evergrowing pool of new material, is surprising in the breadth of its subjects. Already knowing a great deal about the history of the period, the break-up of the Roman aegis in Britain and the contingent histories from the Continent, the early literary works, and the more recent fictional works, I wanted to know more.

This compendium covers not only the written word, but the audio-visual forays into this discipline. Many of the titles included in all genres this book puts forward are further surprises. I own many of them but had no real clue that they were bits of Arthuriana.

This is a valuable resource for this subject. I can only wait for a supplement that I hope is in the works, which will cover the most recent output of Arthuriana. Contemplating such a supplement makes it very apparent that any supplements to this resource will be sizable as is the original volume. I only hope that a supplement is in the works, since the greater part of the work has already been accomplished.

What a fantastic time capsule and yet relevent today in light of war in Irag. The author provides a road map for military leader to address the incredibly important issue of troop morale. Wonderful to be able to gaze back in time when thoughtful and intelligent authors like Benjamin Chubak treated war as a challenge to manage
psychologically as well as militarily. Our present leaders would be wise to consult this timely volume. I rate it a 10!!!

THIS MARSHA'S BIBLIOGRAPHY HAS BEEN VERY USEFUL, IN FINDING SOME SPECIAL KINDS OF MINERALIZATIONS, WHICH ARE QUITE INDICATIVE OF SOME INTERESTING PHENOMENA, IN TECTONICS AND ITS CORRELATION TO HYDROGEOLOGY AND GROUND WATER FLOW, AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS, OF SOME CHEMICAL ELEMENTS, TO HUMAN HEALTH AND ITS NEAR FUTURE ENVIRNMENTAL IMPACT IN THE HABITAT OF ALL LIVING CREATURES, IN A SO FRAGILE SETTING, AS IS NOW IN THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO. THIS OPINION IS RELATED TO MY CLOSE RELATIONS WITH THE RESEARCH OF THE GEOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, OF NEW MEXICO TECH.

I'D LIKE THAT MARSHA OR HENRY KOEHN, SEND ME AN E-MAIL ¡¡¡.

Printed Battle Plans of the American Revolution
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-05
This bibliography provides the first complete list and description of the battle plans of the American War of Independence that were printed between 1775 and 1795. Kenneth Nebenzahl begins his compilation with De Costa's map of the Boston aiae that depicts the initial military confrontation at Lexington and Concord. He describes each of the more than two hundred printed maps that followed, culminating with the plans of Charles Stedman, author of the most important eighteeth-century study of the war.

The author has selected only those maps containing military information. Such maps, he observes, are distinguished by the inclusion of symbols to indicate troop deployment and lines of march. In addition, such maps are usually large scale plans of small areas. The particular map entries in this volume are arranged by theater of action (for example, New England; the Carolinas; Georgia; and others) and then chronologically within each theater. In cases where several engagements occurred in the same area, the maps are ordered chronologically.

In describing the maps, Mr. Nebenzahl has followed the principles outlined in the Anglo American Cataloging Rules. This includes the following information: 1( title, authority statement, imprint; 2) size; 3) analytcal note, that is, an indication of whether the map being described is part of any other work; 4) scale; 5)note on source of title, authority statement, or imprint; 6) physical description; 7) cartographc information; 8) additional names; 9) contents; 10) sources and bibliographic history; 11) references; 12) variants; 13) location of copy desribed; and, 14) military information. This work includes not only maps of the battle plans for the thirteen colonies, but also the relavant maps for Canadian, West Indian, and European engagements.

With hundreds of original woodcuts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-13
The original three volumes comprising E.C. Bigmore and C.W.H. Wyman's monumental classic, A Bibliography Of Printing were published from 1880 to 1886 by the British bookman and publisher, Bernard Quaritch and continue down to the present day as being recognized as a treasure house of information on books dealing with publishing and the printing arts. It was a truly ground-breaking catalogue that quickly established itself as the premier bibliography in this specialized field. The text is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of original woodcuts depicting portraits, printers' marks, topographical scenes, and foliated initials. Bigmore and Wyman's analytical descriptions provided a unique and clarion voice to their well-researched reference book. The one draw back to the 19th century originals was the absence of a comprehensive index. This omission has been corrected with this impressive and outstanding Oak Knoll Press edition with the inclusion of indexes of titles, subjects, and authors. A treasured addition to any dedicated bibliophile collection, A Bibliography Of Printing is an essential, core volume for academic "History Of Publishing" library reference collections as well.

in my career teaching slavic mythology to ukranian orphans, i have never come across a book so expansive in breadth. kulikowski deftly displays his vast bibliographical knowledge. page after page is filled with amazing resources, detailed annotations, and funny illustrations. it is a source of great amazement how one human could even have the time to find all of these books, much less be so well versed in them. i distributed this reader to my children at the ukranian ymca last week, and they have been clamoring for more ever since. i sincerely hope that another volume is soon on the horizon. bravo, mr. kulikowski, and encore! encore! encore!

FOR THE TRUE COLLECTOR
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-18
Black Sparrow Press, as most people know it, is famous for publishing the works of Charles Bukowski. But anyone who loves to read the advanced guard of American Literature, knows that BSP is actually the leading independent publisher in the world. Looking through this scholarly resource book might seem dry (it basically describes the title page, size, layout, printing history, etc. but NOT reviews, or summaries of the books) to the uninititated, but for anyone serious about 20th Century American Literature this book is a necessity. The authors, besides Bukowski, that Black Sparrow has published in its 35 year history regularly fill anthologies of "America's Best." Just to name a few, you'll find books by: Gertrude Stein, Cid Corman, Sam Shepard, Fielding Dawson, Micheal McClure, Joyce Carol Oates, Diane Wakoski, Wanda Coleman, Gerard Malanga, Tom Clark, Wyndham Lewis, D.H. Lawrence, Sherril Jaffe, David Bromige, Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, Ed Dorn, Paul Blackburn, etc., etc. New voices such as, Eileen Myles, Lucia Berlin, Andrei Codrescu, Lyn Lifshin, and Michael Lally come later in the press' history, and therefore their work is not compiled here. This is one of the two problems with this book; it's seriously outdated (representing only the first 12 years of BSP's existence), and the photos of the beautiful book covers and title pages are in black and white. Hopefully, they plan to do a new version for the coming millenium! Still, this volume is a valuable source material for scholars, collectors, and fans of the best of the best. Get this along with the bibliography of Bukowski's work by Aaron Krumhansl and start collecting!
