Great Book for the General Reader
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-11
This is a wonderful book. But don't look for a lot of spectacular images of Pharaohs. You'll only find one , a monumental statue of Tutankamun with much of the color still intact. What you will find is a confectioner, singers, dancers, a brewer, harpists, potters, priests, a manicurist, hairdresser, royal herald, seal bearer, baker, butcher, tax assessor, scribes, an astrologer, and doorkeeper , as well as gods and godesses and objects from every day life including two games and a razor. The photos are beautiful, most of them in color.

This book is subtitled " Treasures from the Collection of the Oriental Institute , University of Chicago".And that's what it is , serving up interesting objects , well illustrated and clearly explained from 3000 BC to 800 AD. Most of the objects have either never been published or never published in a book for the general reader, so , unless you are an Egyptologist you probably have never seen most of them.

My only complaint is that there are too few pieces from the early history of Egypt. No predynastic pieces and only one from the Archaic period (Dynasties 1&2). But the pieces that are in the book are uniformly interesting, well illustrated and understandably explained.

If you are interested in Ancient Egypt , buy this book.

This book provides researchers with invaluable access to the correspondence of the Anglican Prelates.

The compilers have assiduously examined the Lambeth Palace files to make these available to those requiring information regarding the formation of the Anglican Communion in the Pacific.

A great achievement.

Animals' Rights: Considered in Relation to Social Progress

A witty and thoroughly entertaining book
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.

So much nonsense is written about animal rights, especially in the media, but hopefully this enlightening book will help redress the balance.

What do animal rights campaigners believe? Why is fox-hunting and vivisection wrong? And why should people abandon flesh eating? Salt answers all these questions with his typical good humour and intelligence. Never getting bogged down by philosophical arguments or sentimentality, he refutes every argument advanced against animal rights.

Essential reading for anyone involved in campaigning for animal rights or just curious to know what animal rights is really about.

Also highly recommended is "The Savour of Salt: A Henry Salt Anthology" edited by George and Willene Hendrick.

extensive, state-of-the-art reference on Chinese film
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-26
Since the majority of the 2500 listings are Chinese publications, they are recorded in Chinese characters in the nine named sections, plus a tenth headed "Others" which includes miscellaneous material on film ads, copyrights, posters, and songs, among several other topic areas. Nonetheless, Cheng makes the voluminous bibliography as useful as possible for English readers while remaining faithful to the original Chinese names for the entries. Besides the Chinese characters, the Chinese titles are romanized, i. e., written as they would be spoken in Chinese by Westerners. Also, a closing "note" with nearly every one of the Chinese entries denotes the general contents of the publication. English, European, and other Asian publications make up a small percentage of the listings. The nine main sections are Reference Materials, Film History, Specific Film Genres, Film Reviews, Film Theory and Technique, Interdisciplinary Studies, Screenplays and Scripts, Film Technology, and lastly Film Directors, Producers, Actors, Actresses, Cinematographers, Critics, and Screenplay Writers. With each entry in these all-encompassing categories are "entry number, author, title, publication, ISBN, series title note, and language code." The three indexes of subject, author, and title are also helpful to English-speaking students of Chinese film. This first volume of Cheng's ambitious, timely reference "covers materials--including monographs, conference proceedings, and theses--that relate to film studies in and about mainland China published between 1920-2003." A forthcoming second volume will record materials relating to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Like Indian films, Chinese films are attracting considerable critical and audience interest in the U. S. This reference is an incomparable guide to the history and breadth of Chinese film studies, Chinese film production, and Chinese actors and filmmakers.

Superb Annotated Bibliography

If you are a highly committed fan of Timothy Leary (like me), or if you are a researcher following his every literary footstep, or if you are a librarian considering adding a reference work on this important figure of the 1960s counterculture, you definitely will want this wonderful volume. However, if you're just a casual reader, I'm afraid this book will be much too heavy on bibliographic detail for your purposes and tastes. An interesting aside is that the volume is edited by the parents of the well-known actor Winona Ryder (whose given name is Horowitz).
