Early Hawaii surfing by Charles MemmingerReview Date: 2004-05-21
"In one place we came upon a large company of naked natives, of both sexes and all ages,
amusing themselves with the national pastime of surf-bathing."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO begins Mark Twain's not-so-politically correct description of surfing, published in a 1872 memoir. He continues: "Each heathen would then paddle three or four hundred yards out to sea, taking a short board with him, then face the shore and wait for a particularly prodigious billow to come along; at the right moment he would fling his board upon its foamy crest and himself upon the board, and here he would come whizzing by like a bombshell! It did not seem that a lightening express train could shoot along at a more hair-raising speed. I tried surf-bathing once, subsequently, but made a failure of it. I struck the bottom with a couple of barrels of water in me."
Twain's clunky attempt to describe surfing is actually one of the better literary accounts attempted by the first westerners to view surfing in Hawaii. From Capt. James Cook to the earliest missionaries, the haole just couldn't quite comprehend what they were seeing, and had even more trouble putting it in writing.
AN INCREDIBLY COOL little book with the incredibly stuffy title of "200 Years of Surfing Literature -- An Annotated Bibliography," has just been published by Kauai surfing historian Timothy T. DeLa Vega. It is the most comprehensive list of published surfing writing I've ever seen, but the dazzle is in the details. Serious researchers will be able to find names, dates, publications and chapter references of just about any historical surfing writing. But the casual reader will get a kick out of snippets of early descriptions of surfing. The journalists knew they were seeing something amazing, they just couldn't quite describe it.
Adolphe Barrot, visiting on a French sloop of war in 1836 put it this way: "T'words noon, the entire female population of Kealakekua assembled to bathe ... then they plunged thence entirely naked into the waves which were breaking upon the shore; a plank, six or eight feet in length, and pointed at one end, enabled them to sustain themselves on the crest of the waves. It was indeed a singular picture."
When the haole tried to surf, the picture was not so pretty. Adventurer Edward Perkins noted in his 1854 journal: "The art of surf-riding is not so simple as it would seem ... a roller caught me as it broke and ... whirled me along in every conceivable attitude (until) I was compelled to abandon my aquatic sports for the remainder of the day."
Even more bizarre are the early drawings of surfing. The artists managed to put the surfers riding behind waves, beside waves and where there were no waves at all, everywhere but actually on the face of a wave.
Luckily, photography finally game along to clear up what these early writers were trying to describe.
This book is a must for anyone whose ever attempted -- as a writer put it in 1873 -- to stand "in the midst of foam seething like champagne, on the crest of a rushing sea-avalanche."

IndispensableReview Date: 2004-04-10
Research among one's peers, within a defined realm is what makes great teachers, especially if they build their philosophical foundation without relying on the pre-set theories of big name postformalists.
Sadly, scholars, PhD and Masters candidates won't be taken seriously in their field if they don't religiously consult the MLA bibliography in its 5 volume entirety.
Dropping all ideological pretentions and defending the 5 tiered print bibliography, it's ultimately good --and necessary-- to branch out. Since the arrangement and weighting of topics from year to year in the printed subject index gets lost in the electronic versions, it's helpful to have (access to) copies of the 4 or 5 most recent print versions to properly scale your work within the visible arrangement of critical trends. Yes, to sell out and, at least temporarily &/or secretly join the ranks of the publish and perish set, taking care to avoid the addiction to theory that accelerates the latter effect.
Though costly and bulky, I can't recommend having the print tomes --or ready access to them-- enough. The brilliance of the anonymous compilers of this amazing and essential research tool is mind boggling. If you want to accelerate your research or push to the forefront of your specialty --recognized as such or not, you need access to these gems of literary metaresearch. In a perfect world, it would be sufficient to rely on one's education, intellectual curiosity and imagination to produce scholarship worthy of the classics, but in this reality, there is no better tool with which to reserve a shoulder ride on the giant of the moment. You need this.

Great for teaching READING and GEOGRAHPYReview Date: 2002-06-28
Refreshing ideas to teach READING and GEOGRAPHY
What a great resource! I will take a 'focus' title from the resource and summarize the layout. Will Hobb's is a favorite author of mine, thus BEARSTONE: --begins with brief summary --background is brief with helpful teaching strategies to hook students --bookpairing section is attractive and formatted nicely to grab attention, also encourages reading more titles by same author, a feature I like! --expansion activities: Learn about author and themes in book. Websites are listed with detail about sites and suggestions for learning activities using these websites --hands-on activities give six brief but concise activities to do in classroom : graphic organizer, mapping, create character conversations, archaeologist journaling, cook, writing activity--covers the scope of the curriculum nicely here. --ready to go graphic organizer (student activity page) is included. Consistently, through the hands-on activities, additional books are brought into picture as well as more websites. This is packing so many useful resources into the 112-page resource! Books with audio recording are noted. Many cultures are touched on. There are 15 books recommended per seven U.S. regions covered in the resource. The table of contents will direct you to the 'beginning of each region' page. This page has a nice regional map that features 5 of the 15 books as 'focus' books. The other ten title recommendations are noted at the bottom of that page. All books refer to the states that are set in the stories. The authors will keep an updated list of websites to support this resource at their official websites. That's going 'above and beyond' and is greatly appreciated. The hands-on activities listed per 'focus' book are creative, innovative, exciting, and encourage students to think critically. Students will not just be 'cutting and pasting' information into the form of a book report. They will be living, feeling, and remembering the story for a lifetime! Permission is granted to copy and use the student activity page in the classroom. Excellent resource! Hope they do another just like this one--different titles or maybe with picture text books!!!!

"The new edition contains three significant additions. First, four additional years are included. Second, the four categories and citation indexes for each article are given in Part I as well as Part II. Third, all indexed articles are listed in the Part II sections, yet readers who scorn the uncited will not be inconvenienced, since unreferenced articles reside at the bottom of each list.
"In summary, this is a significantly improved edition. This unique book shows which works in various areas have most strongly influenced recent academic accounting research. The book should continue to be especially valuable in preparing reading lists for accounting doctoral programs and seminars."
----Accounting Review
"The authors have added citations for research published during the last 3 years to the 22 years of citations contained in the first edition. There is an alphabetical listing of all articles cited, followed by a breakdown according to mode of reasoning, research methodology, school of thought and topical content. Accounting faculty and graduate students will find this to be a useful aid in locating information for their research projects."
