My Rock Record book which was purchased in the 80's is worn, torn, kept in a ziplock bag and still used on a regular basis.
Time for a new, old copy.

Great book, thanks Terry.

Two of the most prestigious awards that a children's book author can receive - The Newbery and Caldecott awards. "The Newbery and Caldecott Awards 2008 Edition: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books" is a comprehensive guide to the annual awards for children's book, stretching back nearly a century to 1922 and the conception of the Newbery award - and it covers both the winners and the honorable mentions for each of those years. A must have for anyone who wants to seek out the very best in children's literature through the years, "The Newbery and Caldecott Awards 2008 Edition: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books" is highly recommended for community library literature collections.

The Newbery and Caldecott Awards: A Guide to the Medal and Honor Books is the updated 2007 edition to award-winning children's picturebooks and literature. Each entry lists the book's title, author, illustrator, publisher, and a short summary of the book's contents. Books are listed chronologically, from the 2007 award-winning titles to the award-winning titles of 1922 (Newbery) or 1938 (Caldecott). The Newbery and Caldecott lists are separate; an additional section describes media used in Caldecott picture books. An introduction explaining the criteria and basics of the awards, as well as an index for quick reference, round out this excellent guide for librarians seeking quality titles to add to their children's book collections.

I already knew that there were some movies that were based on short stories rather than books, but until I saw this volume, I didn't know how many popular and famous movies were actually based on stories. This book contains introductory articles as well as stories (and which movies were made with the story as basis). Its good reading for movie fans as well as people who enjoy short stories.

We hear or read in the credits about the short story from which particular movie was made. But for the most part, we don't get to see these originals. Now here's an opportunity: Between the two covers of No, But I Saw The Movie.

There are 18 of these stories here, including the bases for All About Eve, High Noon, Jazz Singer, Rear Window, It Happened One Night. We can see how these tales got fleshed out for the screen versions. You can make your own judgment about the relative merits of the originals and the expansions.

I accidently came across this at a second-hand booksale. It is out of print right now, but definitely deserves to be available again.

Lays an important foundation

The term "African American" doesn't usually invoke images north of the 49th parallel, but it should. Not only because Canada was the longed for "Canaan Land" of so many spirituals and therefore, the ultimate home of many escaped slaves, nor because Nova Scotia and New France also had slaves, but because black communities have been a part of what we now call "Canada" since the beginning. George Elliott Clarke , an award winning poet, playwright, critic and scholar , is very much part of the literary map of Canada; this book gathers together a representative selection of his essays and reviews published over a decade and demonstrates that African-Canadian literature is not a recent phenomenon. His map covers vast and diverse territory , including the status of African-American culture as a "model for blackness," black and white racial metaphors in Quebecois literature, black women's search for history and more. This is a great introduction for newcomers, and a foundation for students in the field.

This book is a well-written, well-organized book which is great for all parents of babies and toddlers, as well as anyone else (grandparents, etc.) who would like to be well-informed about all aspects of the toys they buy their children.

I include this book with every new-baby gift I give -- it barely costs more than a card and I get endless thank-yous for it. Parents use it as constant reference for the first few years. In addition to recommendations for the best toys, books, and videos, it includes safety tips and classic games to play with the new person in the house. It's easy to carry along and refer to. And succinct and easy to read during those years when you're too tired to get through more than a paragraph of anything. Really stands out in the sea of baby books: something practical that gets used again and again. What more could you ask for...

Solid multi-ethnic reference with abundant resource
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-25
This resource includes annotated citations for a wide variety of resources focused on international ethnic and national groups. These ethnic groups in the United States are covered: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans. Also includes other areas and nations of the world, such as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Central and South America, as well as Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Approximately 1038 resources are listed. Resources are grouped first by ethnic group, then by grades: preschool through grade 3, grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. Full citation information is included.

Annotated citations are detailed and provide substantial information about the resource. Content scope, organization and format are described. When the resource is fiction, the story and characters are summarized, yet provide enough detail so I could glean an understanding of the style and relevance of the resource.

This work also contains background and explanatory material that is useful for understanding the use and evaluation of multi-ethnic resources. For example, the Introduction section describes criteria for evaluation and the major concerns of evaluation (specifically, general accuracy, stereotypes, language, author's perspective, currency of facts and interpretation, audience, integration of cultural information, balance and multidimensionality, and illustrations). This material serves as a solid introduction to the need for and issues related to multi-ethnic bibliography.

Additional context and background is provided for the ethnic or national group covered in this work. For example, the opening piece to the chapter on United States Native Americans describes the history, type and availability of resources for children and teenagers.

I would include this resource in my collection. Its scope allows flexible use to answer questions about both ethnic groups located in the United States and other countries. The list of contributors indicates a solid diversity of individuals and professional backgrounds. However, I cannot directly ascertain the ethnicity or ethnic experiences of the contributors.

The overall quality, completeness, breadth and depth of the citations is impressive. Given that Bowker is the publisher, I view the contents with hopes of more accuracy and correctness than resources from other publishers. However, I would still care to "spot check" several citations by a careful read of the original works.

All the colors, flavors and and visions of our world

This resource contains annotated bibliographies for books of fiction, oral tradition and poetry for these major groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-Americans.

As stated in the preface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 for individuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on the American experience, and do not include content or stories that occur in other locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title.

Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisors are clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher of various ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type (fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources are indexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject.

Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail on the resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation of subject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading of the citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easily determine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for a lesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling or other uses.

At first glance, I would include this item in my collection of multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensive list of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotated citations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. For example, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources about their European ethnic background.

Before making a final decision to buy this book, I would select and read a representative sampling of several listed resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my own independent read.

A real gem
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-26
In a mere 48 pages, author Michelle Brown, currator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library, has put together a wonderful expose of the Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the beautiful illuminated productions to come out of the Irish monastic/scholarly traditions of the so-called Dark Ages. One can wonder how an age that could produce such exquisite books as the Lindisfarne Gospel could ever be called 'dark'.

The Lindisfarne Gospel is a piece of art, and a piece of history. It is a significant milestone in the history of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon development. Brown's book has illuminations of a more modern sort on every page, pictures and graphics, illustrating the beauty, grandeur, and history of this great work. The Lindisfarne Gospels helped to define Christianity for the local culture, connecting it with the larger world of Christendom.

The Lindisfarne Gospels' artistry lies not only in the beautiful pages, but in great attention to detail throughout. The colours and pages, the hinges and covers, the stitching and construction all testify to an unparalleled care for craftsmanship. The influences of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon imagery is clearly seen in the illuminations and construction, which in turn influenced the further development of those traditions. The calligraphy was influenced by Roman, Greek and Germanic lettering, blending things together in an astonishingly complementary way.

This book would be a gem for the pictures alone; with the brief, insightful text by Michelle Brown, the book becomes a real gift to the reader.

A truly remarkable, beautiful volume. The Frick has always been one of my favorite 4 museums in the world and now having moved to pennsylvania miss it dearly. I used to go atleast once a month. Now this volume lets me relive some of the greatest times w/ such beautiful, powerful art. I own over 500 art volumes and this is in the top 5.

The Frick collection is one of the most wonderful private collections in the US. This wonderful "villa" on the corner of 5th ave. and 70th st. on Central Park East in Manhattan, once belonged to the steel and railroad tycoon Henry Clay Frick, is house to his amazing art collection. The paintings at the Frick collections are invariably of the highest quality, including masterpieces by Duccio di Buoninsegna (panel from the "Maesta`"), Giovanni Bellini (the unforgettable "St Francis in the desert", detail is also on the cover), Holbein, Tiziano, Rembrandt, complete rooms by Boucher and Fragonard, and many many more (Whistler, Watteau, one feels almost guilty by not mentioning them and others...). A museum book should provide luminous access to the museum exhibits, both for those who haven't visited the museum and want a first acquaintance with it, or those who visited it and want a wonderful reminder. This book delivers the goods in the shape of wonderful and vividly colourful reproductions, accompanied by succinct descriptions. It's always a pleasure to go back to this book.

Fitzherbert has done all serious palmists and students of the history of palmistry a real service with this work. While Christopher Jones may not agree with his treatment of the history of the Chierology Society or his assessment of the value of Terrance Dukes' Wu Hsing methods, this is a very useful work in its history, and reviews of the palmistry literature, especially in the last century or two. I used it extensively as a resource for my own history in the Encyclopedia of Palmistry. Might no suggest some rewrites ib both books on the history of scientific hand analysis with some credits or more credits for the works of Evangelista Purkinje, Sir Francis Galton, Harris Hawthorne Wilder, Ines Whipple and Kristine Bonnevie prior to the work of Harold Cummins and Charles Midlo. This is not a how to read palms book. Ed Campbell

This work is a detailed review of the major developments in the history of handreading from the foremost expert in this particular field. The book contains reviews of hundreds of books on handreading together with a collection of short historical essays on Indian, Chinese, Arabic, Victorian and other traditions of palmistry. The essays on many of the colourful characters that have walked the handreading stage over the centuries, such as Cheiro, Heron-Allen and Katherine St Hill are excellent. He is absolutely right about the fraudulency of the so-called 'modern chinese' traditions of handreading which have nothing to do with the Chirological Society of St Hill, for example. Contains many rare photographs and some priceless comments on some very rare and obscure books and manuscripts on handreading. A very thorough piece of work that is an essential part of any serious handreader's collection. You won't learn how to read hands with this book, but you will learn a great deal about handreading.

"Rational Metric Notation" was written toward the end of Paul Creston's life. It is an eccentric book with distracting deliberate misspellings and not really representative of Paul Creston's thought--something of an embarrassment actually. On the other hand, "Principles of Rhythm" is a vital book no musician should overlook. Read Paul Creston's "Principles of Rhythm"; listen to his music whenever you get the chance; and forgive him "Rational Metric Notation."

Paul Creston deserves at least this

This is a published master's degree (I think) thesis. Its prose is rather plodding, I'm sorry to say, but its subject is certainly worth treating. It's a very sad thing that the two Paul Creston books referred to above, "Principles of Rhythm" and "Rational Metric Notation" are now unavailable. I've never had a chance to look at "Rational Metric Notation", but in my opinion "Principles of Rhythm" is one the most important books about music ever published and the only logical exposition of rhythm ever published. (By the bye, I'm also rather fond of "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz-Rock Keyboardist" by Jeff Burns, very much still available.) To sum up, I give "Paul Creston" five stars just for existing.
