Excellent Guide to Percussion Revolver Accessories
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-25
This book is aimed at the advanced collector of original Colt Percussion Revolvers, and it covers the subject of revolver accessories concisely and superbly.

However, this book will also be useful to Living Historians, and to those of us who shoot replica percussion revolvers, by helping us to outfit the replicas in the manner of the originals. Those bitten by the history bug, understand how important it is to "accurately walk in the footsteps" in order to have an authentic history experience, or to put together an accurate historical display. This book is a great guide to the accessories that came with the percussion revolvers of the 1840's 50's and 60's.

On top of hundreds of fantastic photos the book has game discriptions and prices. Many that are not pictured are still in the price list and described there. The dates of manufacture as well as the maker and the origin. Includes a fantastic history of trade stimulator as a whole, and offers contacts for restoration and evaluation. I need another copy, I have worn mine out!

Halloween Costumes, A must-have for collectors
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-14
This is a beautifully done book showing hundreds of Halloween costumes from 1920 to 1970. It also discusses the TV shows, movies, comics, and history of the characters shown on the costumes. A veritable history of television shows. Did you know that Kitty, the friendly saloon girl on the show Gunsmoke is honored with a Halloween costume. You will find yourself going back to this book over and over again.

Lots and Lots of Beautiful Hat Pictures
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-25
This book is in essence a catalog. But what a catalog it is! There are 148 pages of hat photos, divided into chapters mainly by material (straw, felt, horsehair, feathers, etc.) Each page contains approximately three close-up hat photos, with a notation of each hat's year of vintage and a short description. There is little other text, except for a one-page essay at the begining of each chapter.

These are current photos of real hats from collections: a few from the 19th century, most from the early through mid 20th. There is also a chapter on contemporary millinery, which includes a few pages of text and accompanying photos on today's millinery industry. At the end of the book is a price reference for each style depicted.

With photos that are large, close up, and technically excellent, this book is a visual treat for anyone interested in hats or the history of fashion.

I learned a great deal about heirlooms from this book.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

If you never knew what an "heirloom" was in terms of gardening, you will after this read. I came away from this book with a whole new perspective, admiration, and appreciation for maintaining the integrity of each individual plant, not matter what it was.

This provides insight on all the aspects of heirlooms from the government, scientists, seed companies, and home gardeners. What started out as an article for the New York Times culminated into this book which is highly informative from someone who knew nothing in the beginning and learned more than most of us ever will about the subject.

A thorough look at fantasy miniatures
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-01
First off, I have to say that THIS book is the one that started me into miniature collecting and painting. Even before lead miniatures were available in my city, this book comes chock full of designs and ideas that will help you to sculpt your own figurines.

This book contains a section regarding the nature of games (boardgames, wargames and roleplay) wich is insightful and inspiring. The middle chapters deal with the creative process of figure production, from concept-art sketches to the actual sculpting of a full range of minis.

Last, but not least, comes the chapters devoted to assembly, painting and displaying your collection. Especially, I found the painting section to be the most useful, with useful color-charts and diagrams.

There are lots of photographs, mostly from the Citadel range of miniatures circa 1985 as well as color illustrations from masters like John Blanche. Be sure to check out the last page, for it contains color designs for banners an standards.
