This is a "must have" book for muzzle loading gunsmiths.

The Kindig book is a classic for those people who are interested in firearms of the muzzle loading period. The book is has well detailed photographs. These are very important for those people researching muzzle loading firearms with an eye towards building their own. They give the builder a reference from which to base appointments that are appropriate to the school and age period of the firearm. If you are starting a "builders" library this is one of the books to have.

The seminal photographic tribute to the American longrifle.

Joe Kindig's _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_ is a major work, cataloguing as it does the exhaustive Kindig longrifle collection. Even now, thirty seven years after its initial publication, no other work in the field (with the possible exception of George Shumway's _Rifles of Colonial America_, in two volumes,) comes close to its breadth of analysis, or to the sheer number of splendid arms shown in fine B&W illustrations. Each of the several 18th century Pennsylvania gunmaking schools is anlayzed individually, with several rifles from that school presented and discussed.

The text is far from dry and analytical, however. It is alive with humor and anecdotes, and apart from being top-notch research (or very educated opinion where the facts are unknown as yet), is a joy to read in its own right.

Most likely the book will be bought for its illustrations, though, for as interesting as the text is, the book is splitting at the seams with hundreds of crisp black and white photogtraphs from the late Mr. Kindig's landmark rifle collection which he assembled over his long life. Virtually every phase of metamorphosis in the fascinating development of the American longrifle is shown in close detail, with textual analysis of each rifle answering questions and asking new ones as well.

It is difficult to imagine delving into this field of study and not owning _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_. It is a vivid portrait of one of the great American artforms, and of a collection that may never again be altogether in the same place under the same owner, especially one as affectionate toward its subject as Joe Kindig.

I bought this book in the 1990s. I still browse through it today, and this book does hold up.

The chapters are easily categorized by styles. The photos are wonderful!

If you're familiar with COUNTRY HOME MAGAZINE or Mary Emmerling's style, then you'll like the format of this book.

Not just for the coffee table!

Mary Emmerling has always been one of my favorite authors. She has a dramatic, signature look that stands out in all of her books, and NEW COUNTRY COLLECTING continues to portray Country decorating at its' finest. After you look at all of the wonderful photographs and read about the collectors, you will race out the door to shop for new additions to your collections. I own all of her books, and eagerly look forward to new publications for my country bookshelf.

Of all of the reference guides I own, I use two. This is one of those two. This book is an invaluable resource for identifying Matchbox models. It has several indexes to use--chronological, by name and by issue number. I would recommend that any Matchbox collector add this book to their reference library.

I consider this to be the McDonald's collector's premier guide. Full-color photos show you exactly what you're looking for. Variations are also listed, and usually shown, so you'll know to look for that horse with a green base and without! Translites, buttons, and all the other items associated with a promo are listed with values. Although this book only goes through early 1995, you can order supplements by writing to the author (address included in the book). If you're serious about collecting (or selling) McD's Happy Meal toys, you must have this book

Fascinating!

For anyone with an interest in the history of medicine, this book is a fascinating introduction. It's richly illustrated with museum-quality examples of period equipment, from original Laennec stethescopes to bloodletting instruments. The text is well-written, and shows the author's broad expertise with medical and scientific history. There are many quotes directly from centuries-old source material which help the reader understand the context and mindset of physicians who practiced their art so long before any understanding of anatomy and physiology. The final chapter on medical quackery is a wonderful review of the often humorous (and sometimes sad!) ways that charlatans have learned to take advantage of even well-educated people-- and gives great insight into how these same tricks are still being played.

I would particularly recommend this book for any student entering medical school or thinking of pursuing a medically-related career in nursing, dentistry, or pharmacy. It's beautifully bound and put-together, and would make a great gift.

A wonderful treatise on medicine and medical instruments

This is a really fascinating review of medical history and medical instruments. Very seldom does this sort of volume become more than an unread coffee table book, but this book is really fascinating and well written. There is a host of pithy background to flesh out the outlines that you already know, and this is what makes it so enjoyable. I originally purchased it for the information on antique medical instruments. While this is a good part of what is covered, it is less of a primary focus.

As a lifelong collector of mid-century plastic jewelry, I have found the literature on the subject to be amaturish and rather incomplete. No More! This excellent work by Ms Klein certainly will become the "bible" in this field and I feel will overshadow other works in print. The histories, methods of deteriming material, and care and repair as well as the splendid photography make this book a "must" for every collector and dealer.

Great Book, Wonderful Research

This is a great new book on plastic jewelry. I especially enjoyed Chapters 1 and 2 because of the interesting background information on the production of costume jewelry and the tips on how to distinguish one type of plastic from another. Organized by color, the examples of plastic jewelry are beautifully photographed.

A real must

Review Date: 2000-03-03
A mind-boggling array of beautiful and outlandish objects from the 1950s explained, illustrated and priced, with a real sense of perspective and a light-hearted approach. Every page has something to make the collector gasp, and it's not all just the usual 50s Americana -- there's a strong emphasis on stuff from the UK and Europe, including some glorious textiles and enough emphemera to thrill the most jaded collector. A much-needed guide to a still under-explored era of collectables. A real must for anyone with even the remotest interest in understanding both the era and the origins of the objects that help make it seem so glamorous today.

This is an **excellent** resource book! It's not only chock full o' cool color pictures, it has lots of really informative text--a rare combination. Covers furniture (Herman Miller/Saarenen etc), spacey fabric designs, silly kitsch, dishware, lamps, 50s clothing and much, much more. Most books of this sort are either text-heavy, or merely picture books. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in collecting vintage stuff of this period!
