Excellent overview of every pueblo's potteryReview Date: 2005-08-10
This is very well written in an easy going, non-snobish style, instantly increasing your depth of knowledge in southwestern pottery. The photographs are excellent and plentiful, giving many diverse examples from each pueblo/region/era.
Highly recommended for those new to collecting. I gave a copy to my parents in New Mexico, and even though they had been doing a bit of collecting for years, they have a much better understanding of the history of some of the pottery sitting on their shelves. They love this book.

William Faulkner, Move OverReview Date: 2005-03-08
Collecting Candace isn't for everyone, but if you ever want to stray over the line and see the dark undercurrents of what an insincere heart can do, then read this book. It's brief and bare outlines of how Candace attracts these men is one step below a madam collecting her own personal escorts for going out on the town. Nothing sticks to her. She is remote and like teflon, everything rolls off and away from her. Her problems, her difficulties are fostered on the poor man who takes up her cause. Instead of a white knight, the man becomes blackened and stained with Candace's own disregard for truth, justice, and the bond of love and marriage. I rate Collecting Candace five stars.
It's not for one sit-me-down reading, but a book that requires space so you, the reader, can come up for air and wipe the sweat from your brow.

Brooks shows a fascinating understanding of human psychology and a penchant towards gritty horror. The book is a great read -- summer, winter, anytime. I hope they make a movie out of this. After reading the book I went to the website and saw the video made about the book. Definitely worth a look.

The book trailer at it's website is something that everyone should go see, whether you've read "Collecting Candace" or not. It's a thirty seconds that will leave you wanting to read it right then and there. I loved, loved, loved this book - a completely original, dark, frightening and powerful story.

I find the layout too busy and hard to look out. The black type on green background for the price guide adds to the busy look.
Yes, there are a lot of photos and info but in my opinion, the book really needs to be more well organized for me to call it a good book.

Warman's Costume Jewelry Figurals: Identification and Price Guide (Warman's) (Paperback)Review Date: 2008-09-04
I have dealt with Kathy for quite some time and have found her to be extremely knowledgeable about anything regarding pins. She and I converse quite frequently about Christmas tree pins and I have found her to be a true authority on all things "pin". This book is an example of her knowledge and expertise. I highly recommend it to anyone from novice to avid collector. The photography adds to its appeal. Take my word for it this is a great book. Carol Stolworthy

The strengths are: clear listing of all watch specs, often interesting blurb about each company, pronunciation list, company contact info, additional resource list (forums, dealers, etc.). Annual does not change that much yearly, might try buying last years annual and saving about 50% for very similar content.
Enjoy this wonderfully rich subject.

Representing the top of the watchmakers art.Review Date: 2006-03-23
The book is organized by manufacturer and gives the highlights of their current product line. It is profusely illustrated with color photographs on virtually every page. Of course not every watch of every manufacturer could be included on a book of any size. But then again, that's what the web is for.

An Indispensable Resource for Any Serious Book CollectorReview Date: 2003-09-09
However, if you are serious about book collecting, "Among the Gently Mad" is a tremendous resource. Reading between the lines of other book collectors' stories, you will find out which web sites, bookstores, dealers, book fairs, organizations and other sources can help you fill out your collection. By the way, this is not just a book for those who collect rare books. An antiquarian book is simply described as any book that is worth more now than when first published. Basbanes's first rule of collecting books is to focus on subjects that hold your interest and, in fact, your collection should contain books you actually want to read. If you are gently mad, that is "taking delight in the pleasant touching of books long coveted," this book is an indispensable tool to fulfilling your own madness.

"A shelf of books bespeaks the soul whose hands have put it there."Review Date: 2005-10-23
It seems I never get enough of these books about books and this is one of the best. Here we are given a look in on the wonderful life the author has in the world of the High End Collectors. Those like me,and that means all but a very miniscule number, who can only dream of attending and partaking in those auctions, where single rare books sell for tens of thousands, and lots or even complete personal libraries sell for sums equalling the national treasury of small countries. That doesn't mean reading about that sort of thing isn't very interesting;and the author has the ability to make one feel they are part of that activity. What one gets from this book is that anyone can have the same desires, same enjoyment, and all the rest of what comes along with having a passsion for reading, collecting, owning, sharing, arranging, their personal collection whether it is a small number of favorite volumes or some huge ammassment--it's their collecion and is what they have the ability, desire and resources to call their own.I suppose many who work with books like booksellers or library staff can even imagine the books around them are their own.I remember once reading somewhere, something to the effect that nobody ever really owns a book, but only has the privilege of being its caretaker for a while until it eventually passes on as its "owner" is sure to do--it's only a matter of time. This idea comes through very clearly as the author shows how collectors spend lifetimes searching for books that eventually end up in university, library and other collections.
The author describes the personalities he encounters and we can identify with all of them as we pursue our passion with books.
In a nutshell you'll get from this book that the only real difference between your collection and the world he writes about is a matter of scale
A great read and highly recommended to anyone who loves books and reading.

The perfect launching pad for a jump into Audubon printsReview Date: 2003-09-23
This well-illustrated book is the first to read if you have an interest (old or new) in Audubon prints. The book covers the original prints, the valuable full-sized facsimiles, and the not-so-valuable undersized reproductions. Steiner discusses all the major categories (and editions) of original prints including octavo (small) and folio (large), the birds and animals, the copper-plate etchings and the stone lithographs. He also provides a helpful overview of the vast number of facsimile and reproduction editions in circulation. While not complete, it is remarkably comprehensive and will help answer many an Audubon newcomer's questions.
Novice collectors will find everything they need to begin either a serious or casual exploration of Audubon's art--biography, glossary of terms, authentication guidelines (much easier than you may think!), sample prices, information on dealers and guidance on how to buy or sell prints. Seasoned collectors will find previously unpublished information that disproves or amends rules-of thumb that have been gospel for years; they will also find many new sources for prints, books, and educational pursuits.
Steiner has strong opinions and personal interests with regard to Audubon, and they are reflected in the text, but he is diligent about labeling them as such, and putting the more esoteric of his interests where they belong--in one of the book's many appendices. Overall, he has done an excellent job pulling together information from disparate sources, making available to collectors for the first time much "dealer lore"--information previously known only by Audubon specialists. This is a quick-reading book, and one that both dealers and collectors will refer to for years to come.
