I was born in Avalon MANY years ago, and raised there for many years; and I have always loved the lore of the island. I have also become a collector of pottery and turned my attention to the wonderful items that came from my hometown. Super book! L.P.

This is the best guide (there have been few)that has been released to date. The best thing about it are the accurate time frames and the pricing for the individual pieces. Plus the glaze and clay content history are very helpful!!! Get this while you can, because knowing Schiffer books, it will go out of print soon!!

The Final Word on Coke Calendars

Second book in Petretti's/Beyer's comprehensive look at specific areas of Coca-Cola collecting. This book provides a great deal of history behind the calendars as well as some beautiful color pictures of nearly every calendar that Coke ever released, including some very rare pre-1900 calendars. There is a guide to storing and preserving calendars in the back, as well as the most up-to-date price guide available on the subject. Those who bought Classic Coca-Cola Trays know what to expect and others should be pleasantly surprised. Recommend this book to collectors (a must!) and to anybody that is interested in the history of advertising.

Working in fashion, I found this book gave a very informative overview of not only the clothes but also the accessories. The original photos as well as the sketches were beautiful and extremely detailed. The overall book design layout is well constructed.

I just received this book for Christmas along with many other fashion guides. I buy a lot of reference material on period fashions because I own an antique and vintage clothing shop. This book has wonderful pictures that are large and clear. There are a lot of photos as well as textual information that will guide anyone through the decade's different styles. The layout of the book is very nice, also.
There is quite a bit of information dedicated to menswear and children's fashions also. I do wish the book had more pictures than text, sometimes I'd rather look at the pictures than read about why the style was popular, because the pictures are all I really need to date a piece. Unlike some of the other reference books I have, this book is a little hard to thumb through. Still, If you are looking for a book that covers mens, womens and childrens fashions of the 30s look no further!

Exquisite photography combined with delectable prose

Collectible Glass Rose Bowls is an excellent history of the glassmaking artistry of rose bowls. The book starts with a detailed explanation of rose bowls and then studies examples created in the different eras leading up today. Johanna also gives great details on the method of manufacture of the rose bowls that are pictured and a bit of history on the companies that produced each item. She explains and defines many glass terms that are useful in the study of other glass forms.

The photography is terrific. The fine workmanship in the rose bowls nearly jumps off the page. If you think rose bowls are simple and boring, you will change your mind in very short order.

Collectible Glass Rose Bowls is an excellent tutorial on the hobby of glass collecting. Even if you don't collect rose bowls, you will learn much from reading this very enjoyable book. This book is highly recommended for all glass collectors.

Collecting Toy Soldiers. (1996) Third Edition
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-10
Second of two large soft cover books by Richard O'Brien, specifically aimed at the identification and fair value of American Made Toy Soldiers. Includes brief history of each manufacturer pre and post WWII styles of soldiers. Top quality materials, mine has traveled thousands of miles in suitcases, back packs and the backseat. Opened and closed hundreds of times, it is still in great shape. Crisp and clear photos of most of the listed items have helped avoid confusion and misidentification.

With on-line auctions setting the pace in the toy soldier collecting world. An identification guide of this quality is a must in establishing a BEGINNING bid, while desirability sets how high the actual cost will go. Hopefully, an update of this book is in work as in my opinion the on-line auctions have driven the price of many of the toys to often double their listed price.

A great history, identification, and price guide.

I've been collecting American toy soldiers all of my life, and this is by far the best guide that I've ever found. It works as a good overall history of the subject, as well as, a specific historical guide to the companies and individuals involved. It is also superb as an identification guide and for approximate pricing.
Whether you are into cast metal figures like Maniol, Barclay, or Grey Iron, or the classic Marx, Ideal, MPC, or Lido plastics, this is one great guide. It even covers comic book flats, paper soldiers, cerial premiums, and the original G.I. Joe. You can spend hours just flipping though this hefty book and reminiscing, even if you don't currently collect.

This subject is limitless, and in fact there are an endless number of books on the subject. This book is a brief but beautiful approach to give an overview. To a modest collector it does a good job of covering what can ce collected, why collections are made and the things to consider when deciding how and where to diplay them.
It is of very large, high quality (10" X 13") book with many excellent color photographs and makes a fine coffee table book. The photos are almost all of high end to museum type collections. That, however; does not suggest that the same principles cannot be used in displaying personal collections of moderate objects. The one thing you won't find in the book is anything about how to go about assembling a collection.
You will find some very imaginative ideas in displaying collections of a small number,a large number and even mixing very different objects.
Probably the strongest part of the book is in how it shows how importrant the lighting of the collection really is.It has pictures showing the same objects displayed with different lighting; and the differences are startling. At the back of the book, you will find an extensive list of sources and suppliers;conservation organizations, conservation references, consrvators and restorers, suppliers of display units, materials, installers, framers and security. There is also a list of books the authors used as references in writing the book.
A delightful book by anyone who has a collection or just enjoys looking a one.

It also tells when you shouldn't collect plants. I highly recommend this book. A good book to go with it is "Building Your Own Nature Museum" by Vinson Brown...

As a collector of all stickpins, I gained much knowledge from this book. It covers many catagories and types of stickpins and scarfpins from all eras prior to the 1940s. It was also fun to just see the quality pictures of this lady's collection. To a collector or dealer, this book will be well worth the price. I refer to it again and again.
