In Brother to Brother, Reverend Thomas Walker is encouraged to have radical surgery over and over again by urologists who practice bad medicine. The Reverend seems to know propoganda when he sees it and refuses to have his body destroyed for no benefit. He makes good decisions despite the urological establishment's pressure to do the wrong thing. A nice enjoyable read. Like the other physician who reviewed this book, I rate it very high.

Bravo to Dr. Walker for writing such a compelling book about prostrate cancer. This book is certainly a "must have" for all men, especially african-american men.

In the only randomized placebo-controlled study every done on the radical prostatectomy, radical surgery was no better than placebo. Reverend Walker seems to figure this out. Instead of being pushed into surgery by several urologists he undergoes the much less harmful treatment of radiation seed implants. Definitely read this book and note how much pressure was put on the reverend to undergo surgery, while other less harmful options were ignored. The reverend triumphs over his urologists.

This book chronicles more than one man's struggle with this dreadful disease. It provides spiritual hope for the masses of men who are having the same experience. It proves that I don't have to die SPIRITUALLY, SEXUALLY, EMOTIONALLY OR PHYSICALLY from prostate cancer! Thank you, Thomas L. Walker!!!!

As a physician recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I found the book entertaining and easy to read in 2-3 hours due to the large text. I applaud him for encouraging men to have their prostates checked starting in their 40's. Unfortunately, the book is directed to Blacks more than to all men. The reader is cautioned that the author delays treatment and eventually chooses one form of therapy at a specific institution. The treatment option that has the greatest chance for cure is downplayed. Use this book as only one resource among several. Also, I would have liked more encouragement to let the diagnosis change your life for the better. Best wishes.

I love biographies and this is one of the best.

Isobel Kuhn writes her story of her personal belief to Christianity with grace and honesty. She tells of her struggles to believe, and her climbing with God step by step as He leads her to greater heights. She tells how God called her to the mission field in China.

A great read for someone questioning their roots in Christianity and needing to find their own faith instead of simply accepting the way they were raised. It will strengthen your resolve to find God for yourself. This was Isobel's theme, and she tells how God gently and patiently led her into a grounded solid Christian faith of her very own...not just one "handed down" by her parents. An exceptional book.

You may also want to read "In the Arena" in which she briefly describes again her journey to faith, but mainly tells the story of she and her husband's miraculous mission to the people of China.

Isobel Kuhn's life and missionary work were nothing shy of miraculous due to her deep faith and continuous trust. What a beautiful book, what a beautiful life!

Isobel Miller Kuhn (1901-1957), a Canadian missionary to the Tibeto-Burmese Lisu people of southwest China, wrote a number of popular books about her missionary work. This one, published posthumously after her premature death from cancer, treats Kuhn's pre-missionary career from her teenage years until she sailed for China in 1928. Kuhn had a gift for storytelling, and By Searching is nicely written. Not only will sensitive Christian readers find the work spiritually uplifting, but they will also note the significant differences in the culture of Western conservative Protestantism between the 1920s and the present.

I read this superb book just about two weeks ago from today. It is the well written and inspiring story about a young college student in Vancouver, Canada---of how her professor has vowed that his students will leave his class atheists, and how he made her feel like she was stupid to believe in Creation "just because your parents do". Isobel Kuhn decided that she would not believe something -- "just because her parents did", and, although not an atheist, became an antagonist. In "By Searching", she tells of her life through college on "The Misty Flats", and how God brought her back to himself. She still was a very immature Christian, and this book also tells how she grew. . .how she trusted God to provide for her during her years at Moody, and then--as soon as the Boxer rebellion was over she went to China to serve Jesus among the Lisu of the South-west.

I'm really busy with my studies these days but when I got this book and started to read,I just couldn't drop it!I was extremely encouraged by Isobel's struggle and search for God,I realized a truth, that is whether you have or not believed in God already,as long as you want to know Him and search Him with your spirit and truth,He will prove Himself to you,just like the testimony which happened to Isobel.And for Christians,we should search God first in our daily lives,put Him in the first place,and get a deeper relationship with Him,be purer and holier,be more like Jesus our Savior.And I believe GOd has His own beautiful plans for us,only you can find it out with your sincerity and faith.
I'm also thankful for God,because I'm a Chinese,even nowadays,the place where Isobel went to is still very poor and remote,and even few people know that place and Lisu people(it's a minority of China).I really admire Isobel's sacrifice,if there is no God,how one is able to forsake his own and go to such a terrible place?!But God loves them although men even don't know them.
It's a must-read book,may it encourages each of you, me included,to find God,and as well as a lifestyle that leads us into the inner of truth of Christ.

I'll add my kudos to the list... this is a fantastic read, overflowing with strong arguments for classic Catholic doctrine. I am not Catholic, mind you - I bought this on a recommendation when I first started my investigation into the claims of the Catholic Church.

If the Catholic Church of today even remotely resembled the ideal put forth by St. Francis de Sales in this collection of letters, one would be hard-pressed to deny the validity of its claims. However, in a post-Vatican II, John Paul II "universal salvation" era, it is impossible to reconcile the two.

Too bad.

I recommend this book for Protestants and Catholics alike.

Illustrates what a man with the truth can accomplish. Every Catholic should read this book which proves the teaching of the Catholic church.

Up until the time of St. Francis de Sales, the printing press had been used as a battering ram for reformers of all stripes to destroy christendom.

However, with the start of St. Francis de Sales' mission to the French Calvinists that changed dramatically. When people refused to listen to him because of contempt or fear of reprisal, he printed tracts and slipped them under doors or put them up on public squares to bring the Calvinists back to the Faith.

The result: nearly 72,000 French whose parents abandoneded the Faith a generation ago were brought back to the Catholic Church.

If you read this book (a collection of the tracts St. Francis wrote), you'll see exactly how it happened. The arguments are cogent, simple, easy-to-follow and strike at the heart of whatever matter they address. The arguments against Protestantism in general and Calvinism in particular are relevant and still thorns in the side of the Reformed apologetic several hundred years later. If you're Catholic or Protestant you owe it to yourself to read this collection of tracts!

In addition to what is common in all other positive reviews of this compilation of writings by St. Francis, there yet remains at least one other strength of this book that is to be praised. That strength is his cohesion to the traditional Catholic Faith. There are other books that give overviews of the Catholic Faith, but often times their consistency with Scripture and Tradition should be questioned. That is something that one need not worry about with this work. Not only does St. Francis give sound arguments for the Catholic Faith, but he does so with plenty of Scripture, Church Father quotes, and reference to Church Councils. He also shows an understanding and love for Catholicism that is sopping wet with intellectual genius and passion for Christ! He will make a knowledgeable Reformed churchman (that was his intended audience, after all) take a few steps back and rethink his doctrine of the "visible/invisible church distinction" and how God has commanded the Gospel to be preached and succession of church leaders to continue. Not only does he understand Catholic doctrine, but he also understands his opponents, and often quotes from Calvin, Bucer, and other Reformers. Also, his treatment of the Papacy is probably one of the most concise anywhere. So I challenge you to read it, but I warn you, you may find yourself defending Catholic doctrine afterwards, even if you're Protestant when you first read this book!

The book is easy to read. It provides a detailed insight into most of the contentious issues that separate the Protestant churches from the Catholic Church. It is an excellent reference for anyone who wants a better understanding of the Christian faith. For the Catholic, the book is also an excellent resource for defense of the Faith.

This book was very helpful in my launch into the creative world of candle making. I'm a rookie and was intimidated by the shelves in my craft store. This book eased me into the craft and taught me how to use my own resourses!! I'll never look at garbage the same way~ it got my wheels turning to find new ways to make & create. Highly reccomended!!

This is very informative, step by step procedures to make practicle candles for for many age levels. Instructions are clear and precise, giving caution and tips when needed.

Everyone loves to get a homemade gift. I make candles. I found this book helpful in brushing up my skills and it gave me some new projects to try. I also recycle items and I think it is great that this book encourages that. A great book to add to your craft room at home.

The book is very helpful for the storytellers and teachers who feel that young people and students can become active storytellers as well and then they can enhance their lives and their society.

This book has a wealth of information and is a great value. The DVD is a treasure! I teach special education in an elementary school and I plan to use the stories from the DVD with my students. My students also love the authors' Noondlehead Stories and Scary Tales books which I have read aloud in class.

As an elementary teacher for almost ten years, I've recognized the importance of telling stories to children and have been telling stories for years. I was missing a piece of the literacy puzzle, the piece in which children tell stories themselves, but I didn't know how to approach it until I stumbled across Mitch and Martha at a storytelling conference and bought their book. It provides a practical, manageable approach to teaching children to tell stories. Our school has a high percentage of ESL students and the lessons and activities in this book are of particular relevance. Perhaps the most important part of the book is the companion DVD. It's truly an inspiring 20 minutes. I've shown it several times around our school and teachers who claimed they have no time for storytelling are now finding time.

This Bible is wonderful for those children just starting to read or for those whose parents read to them. Our church gives it to the second graders for their first communion gift.

I was looking for something that a seven year old would enjoy reading. A lot of bibles are either too young or too hard. This was perfect. She loves it.

We found these books for quite a lot less than anywhere, and we were apprehensive that the books may not be of top quality. But the books were in excellent condition (new). The kids love them, the illustrations and text are top notch.

The childs Mom had been searching locally and could not find what she was looking for. She and the baby both love this book! The baby enjoys the illustrations and loves hearing Mommy read to her. Jeanne

My kids love this Bible. The stories are short and accessible for kids of all ages. The pictures are good too, not at all scary. It is easy enough to find any Bible story that you are looking for.

During the 15 years that I've been coaching in Middle School, AAU, and Rec Leagues, I've read a lot of books on coaching basketball, some excellent (Dean Smith's "Multiple Offenses and Defenses," and John Wooden's "Practical Modern Basketball" come to mind), and some not so great. The book in my library that's the most dog-eared and smudged is Morgan Wootten's "Coaching Basketball Successfully." For the levels I've coached, I consider this book indispensable. The book is full not just of X's and O's and drills, although there are plenty of those, but also advice on how to organize a team, how to run tryouts, and how to relate to assistants, players, and parents. There are sections on everything from how to put together a game schedule for the season to when to call (and when not to call) timeouts. It's written clearly and concisely and at a perfect level for my needs. Part of my coaching routine every year is that the first week in August, I take "Coaching Basketball Successfully" down from the shelf and read it cover to cover, one more time.

This book was a gift for a new High School assistant basketball coach. He read it front to back and continued to comment on how it was written. Easy to read, with many useful ideas and drills.

No matter how many books I have on basketball I always come back to this one.When great coachs explain every insight they used to be successful it can only make you a better coach.

I spent one year as an assistant coach and one year as a head coach for boys high school basketball. After a four year hiatus I am returning to head coaching a freshman team and being an assistant for a varsity team. This book made me realize the little things I missed the first time around. From having a philosophy to in game situations. This is a comprehensive plan that I wish I had the first time around. Instead of going to coaching clinics to tell other coaches what Im doing, Im going with questions for the more experienced coaches on how they handle situations. All aspects of being involved in a program are covered: discipline, dealing with the media, dealing with parents, practice plans,etc.... This book does not miss a beat, a must have.

Morgan Wootten is probably THE most successful high school basketball coach, and his book is one that I believe coaches at all levels can benefit from. I have found that the principles, plays and strategies he has written to be very beneficial in my own development as a coach. Plays and diagrams are simple and complete, and his focus on developing his kids as both individuals and players is great reading. This book is one you will want to take your coaching and your team to "the next level."

The book is a little more advanced than what I needed right now coaching 8 & U coach pitch softball, but it does a great job of showing you the direction your coaching should be going as the kids get older. That in turn has influenced how I teach these young girls. Many of the fine drills in this book are too advancd for my age group, but I was able to simplify them a little to make them easier for 7-8 year olds. If your coaching 6-10 year old kids and can only buy one book, this may not be the one. But it is a great book to have in your coaching library. The best I have seen, my kids just are not quite ready for it yet.

I have coached for over ten years now and have found this book to be the most comprehensive, theoretically sound, user friendly coaching handbook on the market. Veroni has organized the information most effectively using charts and diagrams in addition to her commentary. This is THE book to purchase for both the beginning or experienced high school coach.

This book is comprehensive and is aimed at the coach of a team consisting of younger or much younger players. Kathy Veroni sounds like a tough, fair, and thorough coach. Imagine driving a group of late-arriving players 10 miles out of town and telling then to jog back to practice. No wonder West Illinois U has a great softball team.
However, as a captain of a mens' fastpitch softball team, with players who play once a week, this book did not help me much. The drills were just too involved and required a much higher commitment and lower physical strength than I have from the guys on my team. It's like using a college-level calculus text when all you want to learn is high school algebra.
Having said that, the big plus of this book is the VERY EXTENSIVE list of both defensive and offensive drills. This section of the book makes the purchase price worthwhile.

This is a very well laid out book and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this book for coaching high school or college age girls. Might be a little deep for younger athetes but could be adapted. Many drills are included in this book, and I found the philosophies especially interesting. Brought out a lot of simple points I had never thought of before.

Susan Neider's Guide to the Colorado Plateau gets it exactly right. Read this book - or even just look at it - and you are itching to get on the road! The stunning pictures tell you where you'd love to go and the logical and readable maps and the clever photo icons show you just how to do it. After you make your travel reservations, go back and really read the book. The pictures will reward much careful looking and the literate, informative text is filled with useful and unusual details on the history and geology of the region. This book informs without clutter or preachy wordiness. And when you are finished with your trip, you'll have an unbeatable souvenir - though it is likely to be worn out! No matter, you will likely, like me, log on and buy another! The price is right, too, it won't break the bank. This book is an excellent value. Great job, Ms. Neider, thanks!

The best book of its kind and it delivers a remarkable balance of informative text, readable maps, and wonderful photos. This is much more than your normal guide book - it is a portfolio of why I love this place. There is a great deal of information that I haven't found anywhere else - or at least not from the same reference. I now have a copy to carry with me, and a copy to keep displayed in the house.

I took Susan Neider's wonderful Color Country on our family's recent trip out west. We had never been there before, and traveling with Ms. Neider's book was like having our own personal tour guide. She tells you where all the "not to be missed" spots are in each park, and even the best time to see them. Then she provides great maps that make it foolproof to get there. We were never lost even once. We particularly appreciated the scenic route she recommends for approaching Monument Valley, and the detour to Goosenecks State Park, a wonderful spot our other guidebooks didn't even mention. And there was just the right amount of information about the geology of each area to keep us informed, and so well explained that we were still interested. She gives each site a Child Rating for its interest to children, and we found these to be spot-on. For example, she rates Mesa Verde a "5" (the highest child rating), and we all loved it. And now that we're home, Color Country has become our favorite souvenir. The photos are just plain amazing. This book is worth the price just for the portfolio of photographs alone.

[...] Color Country provides travelers to the Colorado Plateau of Utah with essential information to get the lay of the land, a concise explanation of the geology of each park, a list of highlights, and gorgeous, honest photographs of the places covered. Dirt and gravel roads are not the focus of this touring guide; those who want more detail about backcountry travel would be advised to read an expert such as Michael Kelsey. However, even remote places like Kolob and Needles are, in fact, mentioned in the copy I bought. For the traveler looking for a superb overview, this book cuts to the quick and captures the essence of each park with finely-conceived text and images. Rating this book with one star is like buying a Brooks Brothers suit and then complaining because it didn't hold up when you went rock climbing in it.

The photography is art and I am looking forward to our trip. I feel as if I've already been there.

This is the best book on C++ ever written, even better than Eckel's "Thinking in C++".

It is a very clear book, easy to read, with colors, well organized and with exercises. Solutions are provided for the exercises.

I think the most important thing about this book is it's written with ISO C++ 1998 and STL in mind. Most other books teach you C++ 1989 (or even older!) and have an appendix about ISO C++ 1998 and another appendix on STL, and believe me, that's not good for you.

This is certainly the best C++ book I have read for auto-didactic purposes. C++ is a horrible programming language (coming from a functional programming POV, as well as a ton of ANSI-C systems and Fortran numerics coding in my past), which has unfortunately become a standard in many fields. Should it be a necessary evil to you, this is probably the book to read. Better yet: find a different line of work. All right thinking people should avoid making C++ a part of their profession. It has erased more hours of talent than MS minesweeper or solitaire.

After having purchased and read many different C++ books over the last few years in an ongoing quest for C++ knowledge... I can whole
heartedly endorse this volume... You will learn C++ from this book , buy it, study it , move ahead with your C++ journey...

The book is great!

If you like to learn from examples and illustrations, and do not have too much time to waste with long explanations, this book is for you. All the major topics of C++ are covered in a nicely structured series of 33 chapters. To name a few:

-Abstract Classes
-Exception Handling
-Templates
-Containers

Every topic in a given chapter is typically introduced in two pages, the first with an illustration and/or a sample code, followed by a clear and concise discussion of the topic, including its motivation and caveats. The discussion on pointers is particularly illuminating, as well as the discussion on Classes and Object Oriented Programming, which is after all the heart of C++.

I would not recommend this book for someone who does not have any previous exposure to a structured computer language, but it is definetely a great guide and reference on C++ for those already familiar with C, Pascal, etc.
