I have found this book helpful for reworking my eating plans and just improving health. It is fairly comprehensive and I think it is probably the kind of material you would get if you went to a nutritionist. If you want to lose weight sensibly I would recommend it.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I had tried everything. I was fairly successful on the Body for Life program, but it took too much time. All I did on that program was eat and workout. I have a life. I need time for my family, work, continuing education and other activities. When I saw my life suffering at the expense of my body, I had to compromise the Body for Life program. I then ballooned back up to being obese. My doctor tried to talk me into a gastric bypass because my weight was getting so bad. This book from the Mayo Clinic gave me a diet that was very easy and had a lot of great food. I haven't even been tempted to wander from this program at all. The variety of food has filled my food addiction while also taking the weight off of me. I have been continually losing weight and my doctor is not worried about me at all now. She even just filled out a physical report stating that I am in very good health.

If you want good food, good health and time for a real life, this is the only book for you.

I've fought my weight my whole life. I've always been afraid of "fad" diets or diets that exclude one particular food. I think they are not a healthy way to lose weight. Everyone kept telling me to "eat a balanced diet" but no one explained what that meant. People talk about saturated fats, trans fats, etc and I felt like they were speaking a foreign language. My friends would count calories or carbs and would become frustrated. I didn't want to do any of that.

I bought the "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody" when we moved and I had plenty of time for a "project". It is a 12 week program designed to get you into the habit of eating healthy. The first three weeks were a lot of work and took a lot of dedication. I had to weigh and measure everything. After the first three weeks, my eyes adjusted and were able to do the measurments without the scale and cups. Some of the recipes are a lot of prep and there is a lot of cutting of vegi's and fruits. My husband and my 2 teenage kids didn't mind the changes (except brown rice) so after the first 3 weeks "learning curve", it all worked out well. I lost 25 lbs in 12 weeks and I never even got into the exercise part. After the 12 weeks, I stopped tracking my number of servings for 3 months. I still ate the same foods and made sure I didn't eat "A LOT" or high calorie foods. I stopped losing weight but I didn't gain it all back either. I have started tracking my servings again and have started working on the exercise. I have set my goal to lose another 25 lbs in the next 12 weeks.

I agree with everyone else here that the information is presented in a way that is easy to understand and explains it all. The book gets indepth but it is presented in a way that if you don't care what "trans fat" is, you can skip that part. I've even gien this book as presents to friends and family. I bought the cookbook too but I don't like that one.

Whether or not you need to lose weight, this book is an excellent guide to healthy eating for life. The recipes are so easy that we're able to incorporate them into our everyday menus easily. We're all getting out 5-a-day, and then some! For weight maintenance, all you need to do is add a few more portions of some food groups. Even without reading the book, you can open up to the menu pages and start right away. You can also follow this plan on a tight budget since there aren't any hard to find or expensive ingredients. Between the eating plan and very helpful exercise goals, this has got to be the easiest way to get or stay healthy I've ever seen.

I accidentaly stumbled across this book while searching through endless pages of books, here on Amazon. I am so glad that I did. I've always been fascinated by mermaids and have been building my own collection of mermaid books. This is the best mermaid novel that I've read. I'm sure that this will become one of my all time favorite books.
The story is centered on one mermaid's struggles to uncover the truth of her lost heritage and to claim her rightful place in the sea. It is a beautiful and well written story. I highly recommend it as a must read for mermaid enthusiasts. Other books that I recommend:
Sleeping with the Fishes (Fred the Mermaid, Book 1)
Swimming without a Net (Fred the Mermaid, Book 2)
The Last Mermaid
Goddess of the Sea (Goddess Summoning, Book 1) (Berkley Sensation)
The Mermaid's Song
The Changeling Sea (Firebird)
The Mermaid Summer

In all my years of reading, absorbing and devouring books. I have never found another like this one. Alida Van Gores should be found and prasied. The brilliant world of the Merra brought to life with such cleaverness. She's created what's reffered to by fans as the "Holy Grail" of mermaid fiction. Alida if you ever read this, I want you to know, my daughter falls asleep each night to the songs and legends of the Merra.
"Start a ripple, change the sea and all that was will ever be."

For all of us who have been searching for another book - any other book - by the author who wrote Mermaid's Song, I found this on the web today. It's dated July 5, 1998.

"Author and screenwriter Alida Adrianna Van Gores died of breast cancer June 3 at her home in Laguna Beach. She was 47.

Van Gores began her career as an artist, but soon moved on to writing. Her first novel, "Mermaid Song," was published in 1989, and she was working on her second novel when she died. Also, Van Gores wrote the teleplay for the 1984 CBS telepic "He's Not Your Son," and her screenplay "Marooned" was recently optioned by Itaska Films."

She wrote the perfect mermaid book, but there will only be one.

Inspiring and uplifting words are what you will find in this book! The title 'Metaphysical Meditations'doesn't seem to do justice to the beauty of this book, and yet, I don't know what words would. Also, another reason to not be put off by the title is that this book, in my opinion, crosses over and into all religions. You do not need be a follower of Paramahansa Yogananda or Self-Realization to reap the rich benefits of reading these meditations. An open mind and heart and love of God is enough.

The book is small, pocket sized, which makes it perfect for carrying with you. -And once you begin reading this, you'll want to have it with you to glance at whenever you feel the need, have a need, or for an inspirational pick up, or whenever you happen to have a few moments to spare. I like to flip this open in the mornings, and anytime throughout the day and read whatever page I come to.

The book begins with a 'Prayer for a United World.' Then, there's a forward that goes over meditation briefly. Which begins with this: "Most persons would want to meditate if they understood how to do so. The purpose of meditation is to know God, to connect the little joy of the soul with the vast joy of the spirit."

The meditations are short, 3-5 lines per paragraph on a page, and easy to read. No complicated long winded stuff in here. Some of my favourite titles/meditations from this book are:
'Never Lose Hope'
'Spreading Divine Joy'
'Creative Activity'
'Overcoming Fear and Worry'
'Divine Prosperity'
There's also a "Christmas Meditations" section in the back.

There is so much love in this book.
This is a great gift to give as well.

This little book is so full of spiritual wisdom that I place it just short of scriptures such as the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita (both of which influenced the thought portrayed here). I have several copies of this book (car, work, home). Its perspective is a yogic one, but its truths are universally applicable. Paramahansa Yogananda is unique among so-called gurus in being one that truly walked his talk. There is advice for all areas of life and everything said is filled with love and moderation. You will find no book outside of scripture that has more spiritual bang for your buck, in my opinion.

This little book can be kept in pocket or purse. For decades I have known about its power to change the reader from darkness to light, from despair to hope, and from "give me" to "I give." Far ahead of its time, "Metaphysical Meditations" by the famous teacher Paramahansa Yogananda (Self-Realization Fellowship) will not disappoint. First published in 1932 by a teacher who sees positive similarities in many of the world's religions, this book urges the reader to actively pursue spiritual growth, self-love, love for others, kindness and positive thoughts for all our concerns. I love ya Yogananda, wherever your spirit is residing! Bless you!

Do you cringe when you hear about yet another Bible study? Do you fear the shame of a strict school teacher reprimanding you from its pages? Sandra Glahn's Coffee Cup Bible studies are nothing like that. Her writing is like a teacher who walks from behind the desk and sits down in the back row with the rowdiest bunch. No condemnation. No gaggy preaching or lecturing. Just a shared need to learn what our heavenly Teacher is saying. But she is not without enough sense of humor to appreciate the value of a well-flung spitball toward our fellow students. So raise a mug of java to this Bible study series, which manages to keep us awake, learning, and focused on the real Author of Truth.

A rich blend of personal insight and theological training combine to make the Coffee Cup Bible series full of possibility for spiritual growth. Whether two or twenty people meet to interact with the weekly lesson and share their own answers to probing questions, everyone will appreciate the lovely format and original style.

A practical, friendly tone leads to personal application of biblical truth. From Mocha on the Mount, for example, "What are some ways people demonstrate that they're enslaved to money?" Then, "List evidences that you've been affected by materialism?" Sandra Glahn reveals vulnerability as she raises questions contemporary women confront.

Six lessons in each compact book contain the scripture, commentary and discussion questions (Espresso with Esther has five weeks of lessons). Planning a women's Bible study to correspond with the school year, this series lends itself to complete two studies before Christmas, then after the break, offer two more. If you do one study, you will want to complete them all.

As a former BSF Teaching Leader, it's great to be able to recommend a study I know God can bless.

I'm 23 years old now and thinking about this book just makes me smile. It was my favorite book growing up along with The House That Jack Built. I could read these books OVER AND OVER again every day of my life and be content. It's a great book to not only learn to read, but a good lesson in accepting differences among each other. And that's a great lesson to learn at that age!! If you're looking for great book for your youngster, THIS IS IT!! (along with the whole series!!) :)

I use this book every year to introduce ACCELERATED READER to my students. I introduce it as a "read-aloud" and we discuss the text and pictures as I read. Students "act out" the various things that Morris does and students even sit ON their desks when Morris does. There is always a lot of laughing and giggling as Morris learns many things on his first day of school. Morris Goes to School is a great book to show your children how involved they can become when reading.

THEN....... they get to go take a short 5-question AR test on the computer. It's a great book and a great introduction to AR.

Not as Funny as Other Morris Books - a review of "Morris Goes to School"
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-15
I picked up this book to read with my son, and I have to say that we didn't find it particularly funny. Certainly not as funny as the other Morris books. We had about two chuckles in 64 pages. Which is not to say that the story is bad. It hangs together well and provides some very good kid-friendly examples which show why it's good to attend school. Morris, for example, is shown fumbling around town, not knowing which store is the candy store because he can't read. And Morris is also stumped when it comes to figuring out how many gumdrops he can buy, because he can't count.

The publisher suggests this book as a practice reader for those in first grade or younger. My experience convinces me that this book is a little too hard for most children in this age range. For one thing, there are 64 pages of text, which is quite a bit for newbies to sit down and read at one time. And the vocabulary is fairly advanced with words like: wrong, sting, meant, interrupt, couldn't, sandwiches, cream-cheese, piece, fruit, hamburgers, arithmetic, antler, count, make-believe, and forest. And in fact, the Accelerated Reading designation for this book is 2.0 -- which means that those experts feel that the book is suited for entering 2nd Graders.

[The AR designation is a general "guide" that rates books on a relative scale of difficulty. Children can certainly read at levels above or below their group range, so that this number should only be used as a aid to help choose books that are appropriate and not frustrating.]

Three Stars. This is an okay book which shows why learning is necessary. In my and my son's opinion it wasn't as funny as the other Morris books. The Publisher suggests this reader for ages Pre5 to Grade 1. The 'official' Accelerated Reading (AR) designation, however, is 2.0.

Mark Nanos leads the reader through the historical context in which Romans written with substance undergirding his thesis. His historical and pastoral exegesis does not detract from the spiritual guidance Paul was communicating to the Romans, but amplifies it. He skillfully addresses dissimiliar scholarly orthodoxy with reason and facts. This is a thoughtful and flowing work that holds the reader's interest to the end. For those interested in additional information that seems to support Nanos' conclusions read The Christians and the Roman Empire by Marta Sordi, and The Rise of Christianity by Rodney Stark.

Nanos pulls from the history, the culture, the Greek language, and even the archaeology to bring a "fresh" interpretation of a mysterious book to our time. In doing so, he comes closer to putting us into the minds of Jewish Christians living in the 40s, 50s than most commentators.

Nanos' thesis is that Paul is rebuking Gentile Christians for being arrogant about their grace-oriented lifestyle, and that the weak and the strong in Romans aren't Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians (as interpreted for, goodness, 1900+ years?), rather non-Christian Jews and Jewish/Gentile Christians. The Christians are the "strong" because they rely on God's grace, the Jews "weak" because they rely on the law. However, the term "weak" is not necessarily prejorative. In fact, Nanos states that the weak are stumbling *because* of the arrogance of the strong regarding violating the Law. The Christians are chastized in the letter, not exalted, and the Christians are asked to be more "Jewish", or at least, Noachidic.

The Jews are still considered brethren, the calling of God is irrevocable, the seed of Abraham is the branch which sustains the Church, and "all Israel will be saved" (pas Israel sothesetai). Nanos backs all this up. This is a challenge to 'Replacement Theologians,' as Replacementers rely on this letter for much of their arguments.

I also found Nanos' comments on the Shema and its role in the Gospel enlightening.

Excellent but difficult read

Nanos is unequalled in his ability to write and back up his thoughts with proof. He has a twist in this book, from a Jewish perspective, he attempts to show how Paul is writing to Jews and Romans to consider one another as brothers, to emphasize toleration.

Nanos' thesis is that Paul was writing a correction to both, neither should think more of themselves than what they should. It was not the Jews who thought too much of themselves, it was he Romans who were thinking they were more than just simple Christians. His reference to Romans 9 is very insightful.

It is a difficult read, written mostly to a more educated audience, however, it is a good tool for anyone who has a desire to understand the depth of scripture from a Jewish perspective.

If only all christians would remember that the early church was originally all Jewish until the conversion of the Samaritans. The core of Paul's work was done in synagogues and Jews were among the converts throughout Europe and Asia Minor.

Nanos goes a long way to reveal a much needed dialog between Christian and Jew. Christian roots, Jewish ideas, a need for understanding.

The most stimulating book on Romans I have read
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-06
This was the most stimulating book on Paul's epistle to the Romans that I have ever read. It challenged my thinking and shifted my paradigm.

Essentially, Nanos argues that the 'weak' in Romans are not Christian Jews, but rather Jews who have not yet believed in Christ. With this in mind, Nanos interprets the entire epistle as a sustained plea to gentile Christians not to cause offense to Jews, but rather to live in such a way as to cause them no stumbling block to believing in Jesus as the Christ.

There were some elements on Nanos' theory which I found unconvinving. For example, his critique of Luther's view is somewhat overstated, though some criticisms are warranted. Also, Nanos' treatment of the governing officials from Rom 13 being synagogue officials seems a little too narrow. His treatment of the Claudius Edict is also unconvincing. In my opinion, Paul is writing to the gentiles for them to take not a 'hands-off' approach towards Jews, but rather a 'hands-on' evangelistic approach.

One feature of the presentation I thoroughly disliked was the amount of argumentation which appeared in the footnotes. I could not see why most of Nanos' arguments in the footnotes could not have been put into the body of the work. Footnotes should, in my opinion, be reserved for referencing and short peripheral statements. On occasion, Nanos' footnotes take over in arguing his case.

Nevertheless, Nanos' work is highly thought-provoking and well-worth a read. You will not be disappointed by reading this book closely. I did and it altered my outlook on Romans (for the better, I believe).

Over 33 poems compile THE NAKED TRUTH, and two chapters from his upcoming novel Chapters of Ecstasy. The poetry contained within the pages touch on the needs of women, her sexual awareness, the pain she endures at the hands of a man, why men cheat, what matters to men and how men and women can satisfy each other. The poems are erotic in nature and contain an unnerving sense of understanding by a man who knows what we as women crave in relationships whether physical or emotional.

Javon64 states there are two types of people chronicled in this collection: those who are inhibited and those who are uninhibited. The eroticism displayed throughout THE NAKED TRUTH covers a myriad of sexual fantasies, fetishes and sexual freedom. The poetry includes tributes to the author's mother and grandmother, male/female friendships, one-night stands, foot fetishes and uninhibited sexual encounters. The poems are not offensive, but truly erotic in nature. I enjoyed the entire collection with my favorites including: "Can I Catch Your Tears," "One Night Stand," "How Sex Use To Be" and "Wanted: A Good Man."

THE NAKED TRUTH is really an intuitive bare-it-all compilation of poetry. Javon64 deals with topics women and men have contemplated and have lived in their lives; he just put them to rhyming prose. His style is unique but simple. Javon64's poetry is like an autobiography of his life as he states "...a person isn't completely reborn until they can stand naked in their own truth." This collection is filled with truthful insight into the sexual relationships of men and women and how the emotional portions affect them. Also, the little black satin cover is a very nice touch. If you like erotica and poetry, you will enjoy this little black book.

The Naked Truth by Javon64 is a collection of deliciously erotic and sexy poems. Javon64's use of seductive and descriptive words will satisfy the erotic reading audience. The poems run the gamut from two touching poems dedicated to his mother and grandmother, to a woman's plea for a good man.

Some standout poems from this collection include: "Dirty Talk," "Role-Play," "Joyride," and "Head Doctor." The Naked Truth by Javon64 is a tantalizing entry into the world of erotica.

The first in a series of seven, this book tells of a headstrong princess' rash action in the name of curiosity, and the consequences of that action. She no longer exists to her people, and must take on a new identity to begin her quest to right the great wrong that she has brought down onto the earth. She loses everyone and everything that she loves, and she must learn to face herself, as well as her fears.

This is a lovely book that is well-worth seeking out.

I found this at a used book store and picked it up because I thought it looked interesting. I asked the woman working at the counter if she anything about it. She told me it was a great book and that she had read the whole series; that it was a "women kick ...." book. It definetly is. This is one of the best books I have ever read. I read it in three days almost non-stop. You don't even have to be one those people who like the "women kick ...." fantasy books, or Xena, or anything like that. If you want a good read full battle, honor, and love, this is one of the best.

A book that changes over time.

I read this book for the first time when it was released in 1989. It became one of my favorites and I read my way through the rest of the series. At the time that the book came out I was still in college and I identified very much with the character of Anghara. I understood that she had brought her problems on herself, but I still really sympathized with her anger and her passion and her sense of unfairness.

I recently ran across the book again and decided to give it another read. I still enjoyed it, but it is interesting as an older reader how my perception of the book has changed. I now find Anghara exasperating rather than sympathetic. I am amazed that she seems to get off as easily as she does after bringing doom on her lover and her family. I kept reading, but I was looking for some real repentence on her part and getting frustrated because I did not find it.

Cooper is and was a talented writer. The Indigo series was her third fantasy series outing (the first two were Blood Summer and the more famous Time-Master books). Nemesis is set in a semi-Celtic landscape and draws heavily on a variety of myth-based sources for its plot. Cooper does a good job of synthesizing myth in an original way so that it does not feel stale or like a retread of old ideas.

More modern readers will probably be frustrated by the relatively short book length-- I know that I felt like several episodes could have safely been packed into one book, even at the time that I first read them. This series should be a big hit with teenage readers (particularly teenage girls) and are recommended for any reader who enjoys this particular flavor of fantasy.

Anghara Kalingsdaughter is the princess of the southern isles. She is headstrong and has a great deal of curiosity for things that have an 'aura' of mystery. Although she lives perfectly happy with her family and fiancee, she sometimes roams near the 'tower of regrets' and can't help asking herself what lies within, although there are ancient stories that say that the tower is doomed. Anghara acts recklessly and opens the box whithin the tower, releasing seven demons. But she must pay for her error, and seek and destroy every demon, the very demons that destroyed everything she loved. And until she destroys every demon she will became immortal and loose her name, for she is nothing more but a weapon. It's very interesting to see the development of the character Indigo, from this first book to the others. She really changes her view on life.

Daniel's Orchestral Music is an amazing resource. As a music librarian, I find it indespensible. It is huge time saver, with loads of information all in one convenient package. I particularly like the updated instrumentation format, which is easier to understand and gives more complete information.

This book is a necessity for any conductor, orchestra librarian, or artistic director as it is an invaluable resource. It is significantly more comprehensive than the previous edition but nonetheless is a work in progress, missing many great, but obscure composers. The inclusion of the various appendixes with catagorization by duration, composer nationality, etc. are extremely useful. All being said, it is an essential part of any serious musician's library and will serve you well.

Orchestral Music is a must!

The fourth edition of Daniels' handbook is a must for anyone involved in selecting repertoire for the symphony orchestra. The appendices are extremely helpful, the precise instrumentation for percussion and auxilary instruments is valuable, and the listing of nationality, birth/death dates and places for the composers is useful. This handbook is truly a time-saving and informative reference work.
